Given the wind the pressure and the sheer gnar factor of The Boneyard this year the run Genon through down was nothing short of sick. I m going to strongly suspect we see a Redbull lid on this kid s head within a week.

Soderstrom midway down a richly deserved second place run.
Soderstrom midway down a richly deserved second place run.

Soderstrom should legally change his name to Whip-O-Matic .
Soderstrom should legally change his name to "Whip-O-Matic". Double whips, triple whips, he has them all, on his last run he crashed out attempting a 360 double whip on the cabin gap. If he'd stuck it he may have won the whole thing...

  McCaul is back

Cam McCaul has been coming off on an injury for about a month Cam crashed out of the Claymore Challenge back on July 19 and until the first day of practice he had not been on a bike in what must have felt like a thousand years--recovering from an injury takes time and Cam s not at full gas right now so taking third was a fantastic ride for the Trek Fox Rockstar rider.

Brett Rheeder put together a great first run, but then ran into a bit of trouble on his second two. Huge tailwhip over the hip...

  • 4 0
casey was going to be my next pick too. oh well. congrats to whomever won the $1500
  • 2 0
Man, I don't think any of them were on my list...
  • 34 0
Soderstorm had a winning run if he didn't crash the final run.
  • 8 1
chyu.pinkbike.com i agree but im so happy that cam made the podium !!!!1
  • 16 0
What I would like to see is a crash reel from all the crashes during practice, qualifying and finals. It's crazy to see what they get up and walk away from. So much respect Salute Beer
  • 6 0
I have a huge amount of respect for groves after hearing about his cousin. I remember seeing a video about it years ago about him being diagnosed. Very moving stuff in my personal opinion.
  • 3 0
@mnorris122: He crashed in practice on the trick jump mid course.
  • 3 0
Not the trick jump though, it was the 60 footer.
  • 6 1
A belgian guy on the top the box!!!! Finally!
  • 10 0
did anyone notice that in the picture of messere front flipping off the log, kelly is in the background letting his luscious hair blow in the breeze
  • 2 0
Good to see a few of the euros doing well at crankworx for once!
  • 2 0
"On the top OF the box" would be better...
  • 1 0
 where has pilgrim been?
  • 1 0
He was there, I think he crashed out though. He got hurt at Crankworx Les Deux Alps.
  • 85 7
Possibly the most disappointing Crankworks SS i've seen... only because of the record number of crashes and flats... Those who made it to the bottom did awesome..!

flag natalot (Aug 18, 2012 at 19:15) (Below Threshold)
I agree, but Whistler has always been a bigger course so that's bound to happen. Also, Rheeder made me a believer today, he got robbed. Love McCaul till the end, but Rheeder deserved third.
  • 9 5
coverage didnt really do it for me either. for such a big event i was disappointed they didnt step up their game
  • 24 0
yeh the wind sucked too :/
  • 25 1
Really? I thought it was the best contest of the year. Yeah, too many crashes where the course may be to blame, but at least the winner wasn't decided on run number one. Very entertaining. But my one wish was to see someone push Semenuk to throw down on a final run. Too bad Martin didn't land that last trick to force Genon to throw down.
  • 26 0
true, for me the big disappointment was not getting to see what Semenuk, Messere, Zink, or Pilgram had planned for the last drop...
  • 5 1
disappointing ? why? Grooves almost cries after an amazing, after that almost every pilot tried to step up his run.The Genon's runs were amazing . The wind was the same for everyone. This Joyride reminds me when Paul B snatched the win to all the big pros
  • 9 0
Like I said, everyone who made it to the bottom did awesome..! but it's what we didn't get to see that was the downside...
  • 1 1
Ur right. It was decided on run #2 haha
  • 1 3
What happened with Brandon Semenuk? How it is possible he didnt get the first place? Somebody please tell me! I couldnt see the webcast.
  • 2 0
There wasn't even really a competition, it was decided in the 2nd run and the winning score was a 90 last year it was high and mid 90's and people were stepping up and pushing it in their second runs.
  • 20 1
That course was terribly built compared to bearclaw invitational. Im very disappointed at whoever made it because those landings where not packed and thats what screwed everyone over. Im sorry if you disagree but thats my opinion, i give props to whoever rode it and made it to the bottom.
  • 6 0
didn't darren crash and injure some vertebrae because of an unpacked landing in practise? A course like this should be perfect IMO.
Congratulations to thomas genon, Martin, Cam! Cam always cracks me up xD
  • 5 0
Yes he did. I was talking to his mom about it and he said when he called her, he was really ticked off. Darren made his course absolutely perfect, and then to come here and see this course was really disappointing seeing how it's a diamond event
  • 53 1
25g's maybe thomas can buy a fullface. ahah cam mccaul getting it done! favorite rider out there and always will be !
  • 7 1
he had one at bearclaws lol
  • 17 1
stoked for mccaul! seeing him do the horn thing was awesome, its been a while since we seen that before droping in lol
  • 2 1
he had one with him, nobody would have ever geussed for that to be the top 5!
  • 39 1
So Happy for Mccaul he deserves it !
  • 3 0
agreed, that dude has tryed sooo hard and he's made it!

flag natalot (Aug 18, 2012 at 19:28) (Below Threshold)
McCaul is a beaute but Rheeder's run was better. Maybe he should have crashed into the side as well after his last trick..
  • 3 0
 Especially after last year.
  • 2 0
He seems to enjoy riding his bike so much! What an attitude!
  • 37 1
If only Soderstrom had the speed for the drop! Congrats to Genon though, he's gonna have to learn some English for the interviews!
  • 15 0
Genon killed it for sure! Watts had an awesome run too! Anyone else see that "Joyride this d!ck" sign? lol
  • 37 1
congrats to casey, he did amazing given the circumstances. my heart goes out to him!
  • 13 3
 Casey got robbed!!!
  • 7 5
Ya dude. Casey got robbed. It was only because he swore up at the top during his interview.
  • 35 2
 Am feeling sorry for Semenuk..
  • 8 1
Ya, it's definitely a bummer. Super cool to see things get mixed up in the standings, Genon had an incredible run, but it was almost gut-wrenching to watch Semenuk go down again on his second run. Flipping off the flat drop was absolutely bonkers, he looked like he was on (but truthfully, when doesn't he ride smooth). Was also super stoked to see Groves back up there. I feel like he got a little robbed for points, but that is likely just me wanting him to do well. So many awesome riders, and always such a wicked event.
  • 1 1
Groves had a solid run, but there weren't any super huge bangers. I feel the judging was fair. Still stoked for him though, and it's especially awesome given all that he had going on.
  • 2 0
Agree 100%, there was great judging. I was just really hoping to see groves pull up there after getting totally burned on his last season. He's such a great rider, but was getting counted out way too often. They're all great riders, and I'm always so stoked on all of the riding.
  • 1 0
Like Groves said I t that interview, last year was bullsh!t! Haha
  • 27 1
Thomas on red bull for next year i reckon
  • 5 3
I sure hope he resists the temptation... I love his care-free style, and it would suck for him to become part of such a huge conglomeration
  • 28 4
 poor semenuk
  • 10 2
shocked Semenuk wasn't able to put together a run.
  • 16 2
i feel sad becuase semenuks a cool guy, not that the otheres arent either though!
  • 21 0
 I just lost 1500
  • 9 0
Let me guess, you bet Semenuk was going to take the gold? LMAO, you stay away from those gambling sharks.
  • 9 0
i think alot of people did
  • 10 0
I was pretty sure he was going to podium, but that just goes to show how gnarly slopestyle comps are.
  • 19 1
So stoked that Cam McCaul took the bronze. Awecome comeback!
  • 3 0
The guy gives such a show and seems to have the time of his life!
  • 15 0
holy tits! i dont think anyone saw that coming! on another note, we're all f*cked for the clif fantasy team because 99.9% of us put semenuk on ours.
  • 3 0
I thought my 6 were solid... Semenuck, Messere, Sorge, Soderstrom, Pilgrim, and Berrecloth. I guess I know nothing about freeride.
  • 4 0
i think the conditions were a little to blame, all the landings were super dusty, if you didnt land perfect and hold on it slid you into the ground.
  • 16 1
Would of really liked to see more Semenuk and Messere... too bad
  • 15 0
 Soderstrom soo closee!!
  • 13 0
unlucky semenuk!, and Congrats to Thomas! But where was Mike Montgomery?? Smile

  • 9 1
@FreerideHero9, pretty sure what was fishy was the wind gusts...

i wish brandon hadn't crashed both runs and we could of really seen what he had up his sleeve for tricking the last few jumps, i bet he would of gapped over the whole kokanee cabin while throwing a flip whip or some shit Razz
  • 6 14
flag brett236 (Aug 18, 2012 at 19:13) (Below Threshold)
He wouldnt have won. If he somehow managed to top genon's run genon would have thrown it down even harder.
  • 3 1
if semenuk had held on, i think he might have won. look at the tricks he was throwing before he crashed, he might of fronty-ed the 60footer, and flipwhipped the cabin. although genon was the only person to trick the stepup to the cabin.
  • 2 1
there were acctually a handfull of guys that were tricking up.
  • 2 0
are you f*cking with me? He did a super corked backflip off the drop in
  • 2 1
semenuk would of won zink tooo flip nack off the 60 and probley frontty of the step down but that how it goes cant be perfect all the time
  • 2 1
from brandon i wanted to see dialed backflip off the drop, corked 7 on trick jump, flip whip off the balcony for the win! crushed at the results but everyone did great, soderstrom was rad too Smile

 Genon is new monster!
  • 7 0
i missed most of it, can anybody explain what happened to semenuk and zink??
  • 2 0
brandon crashed on runs 1 & 2 near the top both times, and Zink overshot a backflip over the 60 footer and didn't come back for run 2...
  • 3 0
Semenuk never made a complete run. He was among the vast majority that crashed hard when going big.
  • 3 0
I was traveling and tried to catch it on my phone, but my coverage dropped right before zink and semenuks runs. I'm wondering the same thing. Congrats to Genon though!
  • 5 0

When do we get to see Filipe Perestrelo (the supermarket bike ridin' winner of the Giant Glory)?

Thread hijack I know, but we ALL want to see him ride a real bike.

If something has been posted, could someone let me know?
  • 4 0
i cant decide wheter im dissapointed or just surprised wasnt expectingthis at all.dont hate on me but i personally think soderstrom should have won
  • 4 0
I'm feeling sorry for Brandon, but happy for McCaul, finaly he got on the podium ! His ride was absolutely stylish and clear, except that RedBull baloon at the bottom Big Grin
  • 2 0
To anyone dissapointed with the contest runs, the conditions todat were horrible for a slopestyle contest. give the riders some credit for even making it down to the bottom in one piece
  • 2 0
i love semenuk just as much as the next guy but i mean finally some one else gets the top spot and soderstorm with second those guys have been chompn at his tale the whole season... great job!
  • 5 0
Cant believe the winner didnt hit the 60 footer

Semenuk's just such a chill dude, I feel for him man. I had him on the top of my list and I'm sure most did. Losing is rough, but he'll be back for rampage and I can't wait! Smile congrats to all the Crankworx riders!

Psyco track!! Make your bones yard!!! Congrats to the top 3 but we all know Sem puts up 90 + score runs in his sleep. Guess he human afterall and has those bad days on the mtn like every other rider.
  • 3 1
Possibly the most disappointing Crankworks SS i've seen, genon deserved second, martin first, also too many crashes (wind) congrats if you made it down!
  • 1 0
Any new information on Mr. Zink? That landing looked like it hurt, slow getting up? The way he landed I would have put him on a spine board. Sending positive vibes in his direction.

  • 6 4
Was the course poorly designed or what? Way too many crashes. It really ruined the show.
  • 8 1
i think the wind was a main factor again in the crashes
  • 3 1
Yea most guys mentioned wind as a major facor.
  • 6 5
more like the shitty landings, they were way too loose and dusty
  • 1 0
Landings were dry. Really dry. Really really really dry. hasnt rained in like 2 weeks. and theres no sprinklers.
  • 1 0
would it be that hard to bring in some hose, or pour freaking water bottles on the landings one by one???? this is a FMB gold event sponsored by red bull for heavens sake!!!
  • 2 0
So stoked for Thomas!! I've been rooting for him and Soderstrom the whole season!! Congrats guys!!
  • 3 1
Anyone know if Zink is okay? His crash didn't look super bad, but he was slow getting up?
  • 8 2
Didn't look super bad? He landed on his ass from a 60 foot gap jump.
He is lucky if he did not break his back.
I did on a similar jump gone bad.
  • 1 0
 Was wondering the same thing..
  • 2 0
It still looked bad, just not catastrophically bad. Others crashed on the 60 footer. I'm just hoping he can still ride rampage.
  • 2 1
The other guys were not as high in the air and their angle of approach was mellower allowing them to slide out farther and walk away. Zink bounced on his ass then slid. I cringed watching it.
  • 1 0
Zink overshot and over rotated the 60 footer, landing way deep and directly on his tailbone. I hope he is ok. That type of crash could have paralyzed him by crushing vertebrae and severing the spinal cord. It wouldn't be surprising if he actually did fracture a couple vertebrae, despite being able to get up and walk away after a few minutes.
  • 1 1
broke my bake and tail bone with a similar type of crash mine was not flipping a 60 foot gap but i did land the same way on one of the jumps on dirt murchent
  • 2 0

  • 1 0
the way he walked off, he was sooo pissed
  • 3 0
I was standing next to the gate he walked out of. Some media guy was asking him for an interview he just looked down and walked away. My buddy said hell probably go home build 20 more features and train even harder for next year. Anyway hes still my favourite rider. Congratz to Thomas martin and cam though. They threw down some pretty intense runs and deserved it.
