PRESS RELEASE: Commencal Bikes

It’s all go for the second season of the Commencal Enduro Project structure. Building on the efforts made in 2022, with a magnificent victory at the EWS in Loudenvielle, the team has been rewarded for their work. On one side, new partners have come onboard to support them, and on the other, the development of the Meta platform that is fast approaching the finish line.

From the efforts made during numerous prototype phases, this new bike benefits from the valuable lessons of our riders and a full season of racing at Enduro World Series events.

Close in terms of aesthetics to the rest of the series, this Meta Team model remains adaptable. The team intends to take full advantage of the coming races to test and confirm various setting options developed throughout the winter.

At the heart of the project are Arthur Quet and Alex Rudeau.

bigquotesFor this new platform we wanted to offer a bike that is as efficient as it is pleasant to ride, across as many situations as possible and in the hands of a majority of riders.
The racing environment and the diversity of scenarios and terrain that we encounter are the best tools for achieving this versatility and developing our future production bikes.

We worked hard to get here. To give you an idea of the work already done, we’ve created three different frame versions, tried out different linkages and suspension settings etc. We ride with the 28th evolution of our frame with a virtual pivot point kinematic and Fox suspension.
Arthur Quet, Commencal Technical Manager for Race Programs

bigquotesThe past year of development has allowed us to validate many points on the bike. We worked hard on the frame to achieve the best balance between comfort and dynamism. The new kinematics bring a lot in this sense. Alex Rudeau, Commencal Enduro Project rider

At the team sponsorship level, this new year sees a new official relationship between the Commencal Enduro Project and TRP. In addition to brakes, TRP will also take care of the drivetrain thanks to the brand new enduro dedicated groupset.

Other great news is the arrival of Bosch among the team's partners. The team will take advantage of the race support and know-how of the German brand to develop further.

Alex Rudeau, Louis Jeandel and Guillaume Labeyrou will be behind the handlebars of the Meta Team from the end of March for the two inaugural rounds of the Enduro World Cup in Tasmania. Mathieu Ruffray begins his season 20-21 May, in Monaco, for the opening round of the World E-Bike Series.

The Commencal Enduro Project is pleased to continue collaborating with Schwalbe, Fox, and Crankbrothers, who are brands that like us, put product development at the heart of their projects.

Whoever says through-stem routing is cleaner than this is just wrong.
  • 14 1
It's funny they didn't do it on this model, but on the recent TEMPO they did. They couldn't have listened to PB complaints now Big Grin !?https://m.pinkbike.com/news/first-look-2023-commencal-tempo-a-new-short-travel-trail-bike.html?pbref=p

@sorrymissjackson: funny you mention the TEMPO, because Kazimer is about to release a review of that bike

but the cables rub on the frame!!!! That said I adore exterior run brakes and seat posts
  • 9 0
@sorrymissjackson: I doubt they took the Pinkbike comments into serious consideration. The bike was likely in the final stages of production at that point. I am very glad they didn't do through-stem cables on this bike though!
  • 40 3
@ihsik: you have no idea how terrified the mtb industry is off the pinkbike comments section.
  • 12 0
@sorrymissjackson: my money would be on feedback from the teams' mechanics saying it would be a massive pain in their collective arses to maintain on the races ... While the Tempo isn't supposed to be raced by anything they sponsor (IE, they don't care about it)

On another note, what the heck dooes Bosch bring to them?! Commencal ebikes switching to Bosch motors?
  • 18 0
@sorrymissjackson: I just ordered a tempo frame. My plan is to drill holes in it and AXS. No big deal.
  • 4 0
Not to mention those through the headset routings would have me worrying that the housing was being worn down from rubbing on shit and not being able to see them id end up pulling the front end apart to check.
  • 1 4
Looks like an Intense Tracer to me...
  • 3 1
@OnTheRivet: the fork steerer is rubbed and worn down as well with headset routing
  • 1 0
@Ploutre: Came here to ask the same thing. What is bosch doing if it's not ebike?
  • 2 0
@Ploutre: hopefully not drill bits to create through-stem cable routing

@Ploutre: Bosh is a huge player in auto industry sensors and control units, I wonder if they provide suspension and brake telemetry?

Hmm, strange. I wonder if Vidal's bike is a proto or if they offer the frame undrilled for headset routing as well.

No headset cable routing! Hallelujah, Thank you Wink

Fantastic clean frame design and space to carry all you need on a ride. Defo I'm interested.

Thanks for the reminder. It's been more than 24 hours since I watched the Tempo relase vid. Must go rewatch!

 @mattb33r @seb-stott

Would you consider making a shorter, non reality based competition on trail building? You could make it a three to five episode series, give each contestant either a piece of land to work on or a trail to fix up, and judge them on how good they did, how much they changed, and how much the trail improved/kept its style/feel. The winner could get a bike trailer and a full set of those modular tools.
  • 19 4
*and judge them by their follower count
  • 15 0
@bashhard: That was funny, but I am being serious. Everyone bashes PBA for being corny and not about racing or "real mountain biking". This could be Pbs chance to redeem themselves and make something worth watching that builds trails and community. The tagline could be: A trail advocacy show worth watching. Smile
  • 7 0
 @SenditforJesus:

I'd love to watch something like this, but agree, the less like PBA the better. Could even just be a series following and helping new trail builders getting into it with real world trail builder mentors.

Pink Bike Racing's approach was worlds ahead of PB Academy.
  • 11 1
@SenditforJesus: The word "advocacy" has always been a thorn in my thumb as it proclaims some kind of righteousness to various non-profits or political-type organizations (e.g., IMBA). And it hands over our freedom to explore the woods and make trails to some other "group" that seems have special permissions, knowledge, or connections to do so. So much so that now people see trail-blazing as something that needs to be ultra-funded (e.g., Bentonville) or ultra-political (e-bike access). I just hope that people don't forget that trails didn't come about by some sandal-wearing nerds concerned about erosion patterns. It came about by people who went out into the woods and made paths and more paths. And often those paths are so much better than what the advocacy groups get together and talk about for 5 years.
  • 1 1
@foggnm: I totally hear you and much prefer riding trails made either before these advocacy groups existed or are unmapped and off the beaten path, BUT if we keep talking about growth and adding riders to the sport I don't know what solution is better than the current advocacy group approach. If the numbers that are currently riding trail centers move to the good shit the the good shit won't be good anymore. At the same time, gatekeeping doesn't seem appropriate either (beyond keeping secret trails to yourself).

Ride the good trails while they still exist, folks.
  • 2 0
@foggnm: I agree and I don't see a great or perfect way out. The closest, best thing would be way more of the serious community digging. (in my opinion)
  • 1 0
@foggnm: advocate, a person who publicly supports or recommends a particular cause or policy.
It doesn't proclaim any sense of righteousness and is the correct word to use. You can join an MTB organization so they can advocate (publicly support a specific cause) on your behalf as they have the time/resources/knowledge/relationships to do so better than you could on your own.
Whether this advocacy takes the right approach or has the desired outcome is a completely different question but the term is correct. I think you are reading something into it that isn't there, I'm guessing based on negative outcomes you have experienced

So for the TEMPO, I own the yellow Ohlins edition. Excellent bike all around.... for someone that pedals around a 160/170mm enduro rig around everywhere I was really impressed with how efficient the TEMPO is over longer travel bikes and the TEMPO brings what was once tame trails (from being over-biked) alive again.

Its in a cool spot of an aggresive XC or an even sportier trail bike, Seems similar to a Norco Optic but feels a bit more capable.

However, they shipped mine with a cross threaded bolt into the upper link and immediately pointed the finger at me BUT opted to send me a replacement upper link and bolt. It was quite difficult to install the new upper link and bolt (fairly seasoned self mechanic) and you really need two people to do it. The rear triangle had to be "stretched" to do it and none of the bolt holes lined up requiring us to aggressively flex components in that area of the frame to get everything line up. They even made a video for me to install it which I followed, finally got it back together but WOOF, it was rough.

Customer service through COMMENCAL was excellent but R&D has still not gotten back to me (after repeated attempts) if my experience is normal and if there's a warranty issue at stake.... I've never experienced linkage so difficult to take apart and put back together, seemed like alignment of the frame was off.

If anyone is interested I have pictures of the issue I had with my TEMPO
  • 7 1
I wouldn't mind seeing a pic. Was maybe gonna try and demo a tempo this season.
  • 8 9
typical Commencal, their DH bikes break all the time, you´ll see broken linkages at every bikepark visit
  • 4 0
How did you find out it was crossthreaded?
  • 6 0
@JohSch: I bought a 2021 supreme. First ride in the park, 4th lap my linkage broke. However, commencal customer service is amazing. I was in Whistler and stopped by the commencal store on my way home. They replaced the linkage on the spot. No receipt/proof of purchase needed and the manager was very apologetic and went above and beyond to make sure I was happy. I even got an email from someone at corporate asking me if everything was sorted out with my broken linkage. Haven't had any issues ever since.
  • 1 0
@shredthe915: Ahh great question, I should have made that evident. Play in the frame developed at the 4 mile mark on the first ride.
  • 1 0
@bkm303: Just let me know how I can send to you, i dont think PB allows pics in the comment section. Id actually like to make a TEMPO thread in the forum......
  • 2 0
@Ryanwarren47: yeah a forum post would be great, or just put them on your profile
  • 3 1
As an owner of a couple Commencals the last decade their quality control is a bit lacking. A simple bolt check on one right out of the box can often uncover something undertight, overtight, cross-threaded, or un-greased. They have great customer service and even better pricing that makes up for it in my opinion. They're about mid-pack reliable and replacement parts are always available fast, which is more than I could say for some far pricier brands.
  • 1 1
My Meta TR came with a dirty big scratch on the top tube, and a threaded bleed screw on the brake lever but i fished the little coil of thread out luckily with a pick. Otherwise its a great bike. I say they are rough as guts but mean to ride. Hence the price
  • 1 0
I'd be curious to see your struggle photos.
  • 1 0
@jokermtb: how can I upload those on PB?
  • 1 0
@bkm303: got it thanks! Ive created a forum thread under commencal

Is it just me or does the HT look odd? Steep-ish? Maybe just a small frame?

Otherwise, looks great! Commencal have been killing it for a while.
  • 1 0
I'm gonna make a guess that it's an adjustable angle headset. The steerer tube looks closer to the front of the headtube then the back. Plus the angle of the fork looks steeper the the headtube.
  • 5 0
@cfox109: very, very likely. it is a proto bike after all they're probably playing with that angle all the time.
  • 9 0
Steep is the new slack. You heard it here first!
  • 3 3
 It looks unrideably steep.
  • 1 0
you got me curious and I measured it in my drawing program, it sits at a conservative 65 degree angle in the picture. Interesting stuff!
  • 1 0
@hardtailpunter: wow, I thought it would have been steeper. 65 is steep for an enduro bike tho.
  • 3 0
@hardtailpunter: A lot of Commencal racers were really keen on the original 2018-2019 Meta AM 29, namely the winningest rider in EWS history, Cecile Ravanel. That iteration of the Meta was notably conservative geometry-wise, with a short reach and that exact 65-degree head angle. Racers and reviewers alike praised it at the time for its maneuverability for its category.

Makes perfect sense in an era where top-level enduro racers are usually downsizing frames for racing. Why not keep the longer reach of modern bike geo but have a more versatile head angle? After all enduro racing is a lot jankier than it looks, I'd much rather be able to get over my front wheel a bit on a sudden mid-stage uphill sprint.
  • 11 2
Looks rad. 28 iterations of the frame and assumedly is impressive and points to a polished product. Makes me want one even if I'm very pleased with my Spire. There is something so reassuring regarding durability when on an alloy frame.
  • 2 0
bought a spire just 3 hours ago. rip
  • 9 0
BOSCH as a partner? What do they provide that isn't e-bike related?
  • 2 0
I was literally scrolling through the comments hoping someone would answer.
  • 2 0
Power tools, no handjobs for Commencal´s mechanics anymore?
  • 1 0
Looks like the team includes an e-biker ("Mathieu Ruffray begins his season 20-21 May, in Monaco, for the opening round of the World E-Bike Series"), so I'm guessing Bosch sponsors the meat-engined part of the team with money.
  • 1 0
Bosch owns an aluminum smelter/caster in Lubbock Tx, but i highly doubt they provide the aluminum for Commencal, i guess they sponsor just to increase their presence in the sport or tax purposes or both. hahaha
  • 8 1
For some reason I have a knack for solid rear triangles. Sexy thing they built there.
  • 2 0
 Are you fo' real?
  • 1 0
You have a knack for building them, or breaking them?
  • 8 2
TRP is brilliant to color match Kashima. The brakes are stellar but now I'm curious how many more sales they capture from the "matchey-matchey" folks.
  • 5 0
What happened to the TEMPO by the way ?
Seemed like an interesting model when it was announced, but nothing but radio silence when it comes to reviews or any other media coverage since then
  • 34 0
There's a review coming soon - I've been riding one for a while.
  • 2 1
@mikekazimer: Give us a sneaky insight into your thoughts on the TEMPO. Its impossible to find a review on it and they're coming back into stock in a couple of weeks. Wanted to buy frame only but there is no way I'd think about buying one without a PB review to go off. Really trust what y'll say about bikes.
  • 11 0
@mikekazimer: Did the long term Madonna review ever come to fruition?
  • 2 0
 @mikekazimer: Cant freakin wait!
  • 2 0
It's available next month so the review can't be that far away.
  • 5 0
Looks sweet! I love Commencal's subtle frame design, it kinda seems almost raw
  • 6 0
I spy a new TRP drivetrain???
  • 5 0
Great looking bike but give us a raw alloy or polished frame option (in typical Commencal fashion) when released pls.
  • 6 0
Why is it running a 100mm dropper post?
  • 3 0
The forward linkage vp thing is clean - I know they are not the first, but I like where it's going. Make a blue one and take my money.
  • 1 0
Hard to be sure, but looks like its configured much like the Yeti switch (before but very similar to infinity) which delivers a more traditional anti-squat outcome. But hard to say for sure.
  • 1 0
On second look, appears to be tuned like Dave Earle’s Sine platform and less like Damon Madsen’s / Bhaack platforms.
  • 4 0
Asked the team in Golden, CO. Bike will be capable of headset routing or external routing.
  • 4 0
Please produce with some adjustability and option to run mullet or full 29..
  • 1 0
Interesting to read the number of iterations tested during development.
Just goes to show that the Atherton design process - which has many more iteration possible in much shorter time-spans - had a lot going for it in this respect.
Having ridden one (150), it seems to have worked too.

Nice bike ! Whats the best things to install in the triangle (under the top tube) with the bottle holder mounts ? My Trek Fuel has it too

Thanks Smile

The first shown prototype looked lot better, more gravity oriented. And coil shock compatible, too !
www.pinkbike.com/news/first-look-commencal-unveils-prototype-with-an-unusual-four-bar-suspension-design.html

This one looks more trail oriented, without any coil shock option, obviously :-(
  • 2 0
For someone who doesn't know better, are you basing this on eyeballing the frame shape? Not enough room for a coil, HTA looks a little steeper etc?
  • 2 0
Your opinion that it is not coil compatible is based on what? That there is no picture of it?
  • 1 1
@dlyndon: Yes, dryballing :-) On the prototype, the TT was shallower, it didn't fall that steeply like on this one. Commencal also tested many positions for upper shock eyelet using that detachable alu-triangle under TT.
On this one, TT has much deeper slope, falls steeply and upper shock mount is placed higher, closer to the TT.
  • 1 2
 WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED…!!!

My 4 month old 2022 Mondraker foxy RR frame decided to full to peace’s after a fairly miner crash, and would to sell the frame once replaced by warranty (when they decide to get back to me) and replace with this Absolute Rig!!
