[UPDATED - Racing Starts at 14:30 CEST] Schedule Change for the Andorra DH World Cup Due to Extreme Weather

Aug 25, 2023
by Ed Spratt
Severe storms locked themselves in and put a strangle hold on the venue late Wednesday afternoon. Thursday s track conditions were actually favourable considering how dry it has been.

The Andorra DH World Cup is currently postponed due to extreme weather conditions follow updates from the race below.

Origianl article:

It has been announced the schedule is set to change for tomorrow's elite racing as "extreme wind speeds" are expected.

We have just received word a revised race schedule is set to be agreed upon and announced at 6:15 am local time (CEST) tomorrow morning as current weather forecasting suggests unsafe winds. The decision has been made by the UCI WBD Sports and the local organiser to ensure the safety of everyone attending the event. If racing is able to go ahead tomorrow then the current suggest schedule is as follows:

7:30 - 8:30 CEST / 6:30 - 7:30 BST / 22:30 - 23:30 PDT - Training (Women and Men combined)

9:45 CEST / 8:45 BST / 0:45 PDT / 19:45 NZST - Elite Men's Finals (All 61 qualified riders)

The announcement also stated if "a further deterioration of the weather is predicted to coincide with this revised schedule the event will be postponed for the day and further updates will be communicated as appropriate."

Update: August 26 7:15 CEST

We can now confirm that the above schedule will be proceeding today if the weather conditions don't change.

What if Finals Can't be Held?:

With the news that racing is postponed we have taken a look through the UCI rules and if finals can not be held in Andorra then the last qualifying round or semi-finals will decide the winner from this round. As we have not had semi-finals this week then it would be yesterday's qualifying results deciding the winner. If no finals can take place then the results this weekend would be:

Elite Women

1st. Vali Höll: 3:11.924
2nd. Nina Hoffmann: 3:15.849
3rd. Mille Johnset: 3:20.657
4th. Monika Hrastnik: 3:20.896
5th. Marine Cabirou: 3:21.705

Elite Men

1st. Loic Bruni: 2:46.720
2nd. Loris Vergier: 2:47.107
3rd. Jackson Goldstone: 2:48.720
4th. Jordan Williams: 2:49.095
5th. Benoit Coulanges: 2:49.720

Here is the full UCI regulation wording:

bigquotesThe downhill competition must include at minimum one a qualifying round and a final.

The top 25 men juniors and top 10 women juniors from the qualifying round qualify for
the final.

The top 60 men elite and top 15 women elite from the qualifying round qualify for the
semi-final.

The top 30 men elite and top 10 women elite from the semi-finals qualify for the final.

If the final cannot take place due to unforeseen circumstances, the last qualifying
round to take place, including semi-final as the case may be, determines the final result.
UCI Rule 4.11.010

Update: August 26 11:40 CEST

An update is still expected shortly at 12:00 but we have heard word that wind speeds of over 90km/h are being recorded at the start hut.

If the weather improves the new race start times would be:

13:45 - 14:15 CEST / 12:45 - 13:15 BST / 4:45 - 5:15 PDT / 23:45 - 0:15 NZST - Training (Women and Men combined)
14:45 CEST / 13:45 BST / 5:45 PDT / 0:45 NZST - Elite Women's Finals (All 17 qualified riders)
15:30 CEST / 14:30 BST / 6:30 PDT / 1:30 NZST - Elite Men's Finals (All 61 qualified riders)

In this update, it was stated that if no improvement is seen at 12 then the race will be cancelled. We should have more news soon with the big update coming in around 20 minutes.

Video: Towed In with Dean Lucas & Ed Masters

While we wait for the big update check out Dean Lucas and Ed Masters' thoughts on the situation.

Update: August 26 12:28 CEST

The UCI MTB World Series have announced that the racing is back on as the weather has cleared on course. The new race start time is 14:30 CEST / 13:30 BST / 4:30 PDT / 23:30 NZST.

Riders will have a chance to train between 13:45 - 14:15 CEST before the Elite Women kick off at 14:45 CEST. The Elite Men will quickly follow.

Strangely the weather forecast is still predicting thunderstorms and strong winds for this time so the situation could still change.

We will keep this article updated with the latest on the race start time.

 Wow, strong words! Impressive...

May people like you should apply for a job at UCI and show the world how to do it better. I know that they are continous looking for referees or other jobs to organise safe races.

lead by example... not by complaining

@stax81: Hey, don't crucify the messenger.

But I'd add that if they want to pay me handsomely to not bugger up an entire sport when it didn't need fixing, then they know where to find me.
  • 1 0
@stax81: is that the job offer for literally being an social media-based UCI shill that was posted in the “jobs in the industry roundup” a while back?

I don't know what the last decision will be but I can tell you that the weather is... wet and electric here in the Pyreneas. This race is gonna be chaotic if it happens.

Clear at track. For the moment
  • 1 0
@bgoldstone: It's looking pretty rough right now. If they can race it could be a wild one.
  • 1 0
@edspratt: heard it’s postponed. Gcn start time is now 4 hours from now
  • 1 0
@bgoldstone: I'm seeing that too. I haven't seen anything official just yet, hopefully, I can give an update soon.

@edspratt: Where would we look for an official announcement?
  • 2 0
@jessemeyers: per Ucimtbseries instagram the race is postponed
  • 2 0
Yep, it looks like everything is off until a review in around three hours.
  • 1 0
@edspratt: In 4 hours it's going to be armageddon up there. They need to get this done tomorrow.

@BenPea: forecast looks like it’s going to come in really hard with a mountain storm at 10 then roll through. Bigger storm than during track walk. Weather might be better later but the track could be punched
  • 2 0
@bgoldstone: shit, you're right and it actually looks like it's going to calm down a bit this arvo. Love a bit of weather chat.
  • 2 4
@BenPea: Web Cams look fine, they should be racing. I bet BK is fuming right now, tape the jumps off and run the race.

  • 7 0
I like this spirt of working with the weather, instead of f*ck all
  • 3 0
Right? I don't like semi finals because I feel like it puts more pressure on the riders already riding top game. One fully committed finale is the best
  • 31 0
Can’t wait for the 43td place rider who normally wouldn’t have been in the semi to drop heater for the win before the weather comes in and nobody sees the winning run. And takes max UCI points
  • 67 0
And then can't race the next event, because UCI points won on rainy days only allow you to enter other rain affected races or some other random incomprehensible rule.
  • 22 0
Will riders finishing 31-61 get UCI points? Asking for a redhead.
  • 3 0
Mr Brayton, have you relocated to Keswick NC?
  • 1 0
Only up to 60th per the points chart in Annex 3 of the UCI mtb Rulebook.
  • 19 7
 I f*ing hate GCN!
Paying for this crap. And nothing works.
I have to go to pinkbike to get any idea of the starting time, which is not changed on GCN. No information from them whatsoever. So back to pinkbike to recognize it was postponed again …
Give me back my free RB coverage that worked a million times better!
  • 11 14
You know GCN don’t control the weather….
  • 19 1
@kev-jones: you know the GCN app has a home page right? And as a paid subscriber the latest is “Is your saddle angle slowing you down?”

Hardly seems worth the price. I can’t even see there’s a delay to the semis in the app. It’s a poor value proposition.
  • 5 0
@kev-jones: but they are still able to put an info on web
  • 27 1
@kev-jones: but they control the lack of info on their app …
I’m not complaining about the weather.
I’m complaining about the lack of info and why they don’t put a simple banner on the DH coverage button on their app that says „race postponed for 12:00“. Done.
Why do I, as a paying subscriber, have to go to pinkbike to get that info?
That’s unprofessional.
And that’s what I’m complaining about
  • 1 2
 This !
  • 13 2
Imagine some of you on here followed downhill ski-ing.......you'd all lose your minds the amount of times things are cancelled/postponed/ re-arranged.....
It's a mountain sport, and weather plays its part......

It's not on UCI/GCN/Discovery/WB.......
  • 2 0
Literally every (non UCI) race I've been in this year has had some alteration or modification due to weather. It happens...alot lately.
  • 11 1
Funny story. RedBull (on instagram) gave more info on the race delay than UCI and WB did Big Grin Big Grin again THANKS REDBULL
  • 5 0
I'm curious to see if they close the big gap jump if it's windy and they do race. It sounds from Jenna Hasting's quallie day vlog that they wanted to close it after Camile's crash and the long delay, but obviously couldn't as they'd already run a bunch of riders.
  • 1 0
Looks like there's no more practice though? So riders wouldn't have a chance to practice the b line
  • 1 0
@Mayzei: There's an hour of practice going on right now actually, 7:30-8:30 local time. Winds seemed calm at dawn, per everyone's Instagram. My worry is it really gets up half way through the men's event.
  • 3 0
@The-Foiling-Optimist: Bigger problems is because arround that point on the "hill" you have sudden wind gusts. I live in Andorra and riding bikepark every week. Yesturday I saw 3 riders taken by the wind from that jump...it's horrific
  • 3 0
If it looks like the wind is going to be wild the road gap is going to be closed. Obviously would have to forecast that before anyone dropped.
  • 4 0
@bgoldstone: I think I've said this before but I'll say it again Bailey, thanks so much for posting from the front lines for us! Best of luck to your guys.
  • 6 0
@The-Foiling-Optimist: thanks, but I’m her uncle.
  • 1 0
 @bgoldstone: Ha thanks anyway!
  • 1 0
@SasaAbazovic: Yeah it's at like 2000m isn't it? and exposed.
  • 2 0
@bgoldstone: posting front line knowledge from back home cheers bri
  • 3 0
@bgoldstone: Ahh I see, you've been a legend this season!
  • 4 0
Seriously the weather is bad, yes but it's a little a homemade problem too: the race was moved a couple hundred metres further uphill so the track is half above the last tree.... The old track only hat the middle part on an open surface, the rest was in the woods, so more covered from the wind...
I don't say, that it would be easier to ride in the wet as it was steep as f...k but the Wind wouldn't have such an impact
  • 1 0
It is blowing hard at the top. more rain is due any minute. there is significant risk of tree fall and therefore safety to riders and marshals.
  • 3 0
@gcrider: 30 knots? lol, they should run it and shut the jumps
  • 8 1
GCN decided not to bother? Too early for them? This is ridiculous.
  • 2 0
GCN showed the earlier start times at around 7am BST, then that disappeared and now it seems we wont see it at all.
  • 4 1
Top 15 women qualify then it's down to 10 from the semi but men's is 60 down to 30, surely the women could and should have 20 qualifiers at least, they really are killing the sport, as for the weather, it doesn't bode well for the rest of the season does it.
  • 1 0
Only half way through the season and it's nearly September.
  • 6 0
thanks weather ! should remove semis for every runs !
  • 4 0
does this mean there is a ripple in the space time continuum and I'm actually able to watch the race? If not I don't really care
  • 13 2
hopefully Warner exits the worm hole and falls into the broadcast seat and first thing he yells "LOOK AT THE TIME!!!"
  • 5 0
Will this be shown on Youtube, since the Semis were supposed to be?

(I'm guessing No and hoping I'm wrong.)
  • 16 0
I wouldn't be surprised if they manage to mess it up and not show it at all.
  • 5 0
awfully confused, whats happening? where can we find direct updates? the race time has changed suddenly???
  • 5 0
@edspratt can you redo the prediction poll with Adam Brayton added?

  • 3 0
Fantastic, don't have to stay up late tonight. Though I suspect this will fuck with the live stream scheduling like last time we have a major delay.
  • 1 0
are you sure about that? weather says hello
  • 5 0
I'm in Europe by my GCN app is still showing start time 1300...
  • 4 0
GCN showing 12:00 UK start time now? Anyone actually know what's happening?!
  • 4 2
Well that sounds like a wrap. Maybe more races in the Southern Hemi where the weather is more stable UCI? Or just run the race regardless of the weather as was always the case in the past?
  • 4 0
More stable? In SA maybe. I don't remember this ever happening in a World Cup so I'd say it's pretty good in Europe, just a bad storm and the worst resort to be at in a storm.
  • 3 0
In SA yes in the tropical areas closer to equator? Nope. I had a bikepark literally close not because of wind but because of f*ckton of rain
  • 8 7
Can someone confirm how many hours its been bought forward?
I know this was written quickly but surely as a front running media outfit this kinda information would be provided

Not everyone lives in andorra....
  • 6 0
I have added more time zones to the article now. All the racing will now happen in the morning (European time) rather than being spread through the day.

Sitting in La Massana now and it looks well moody up there. Windy down here let alone at the top. The course is very high up, probably can't appreciate that so much on footage
  • 1 0
The old track was below the bottom of new track, or close to it is it not?
  • 2 2
Lucky the UCI were not at Glencoe for the last nationals last weekend. It was hoorina windy, especially on Saturday, wasn't as warm and it rained all day.
But it wasn't a a DH track made for telly and had less jumps and drops (they could always roll them, talke them out and force the b line in so there is actual racing.
  • 1 0
Were there 90kmh winds there too?
  • 5 1
@CleanZine: Breezy day in Glencoe lol
  • 1 0
@linton-photo: just a wee bit of wind, if we didnt ride in the rain and wind we might as well sell out bikes lol.
  • 1 1
Can they roll to Sunday? Could be hidden in the event rulebook somewhere. Looks a little better but still potentially windy, so maybe without the road gap. I’m guessing Cami’s crash might be on the organiser’s minds.
Cracks me up everyone raging at the coverage provider, no one knows what’s going on and I don’t remember things being any different previously!

Fort bill has had changes to the schedule in the past due to high winds forcing the gondola to shut down. I think either 2018 or 2019 the quali's got moved forward to like 8am, so by the time most of the spectators made it there there was no racing for the day.

@bikes-arent-real: You said it. Highest, not average.

GCN+ app is such a joke. I registered, paid for the whole year and never could sign in. They didn’t even register my email.

I now basically rage quitted GCN+

Someone else having these issues?

 Local: European summer time

Pb should really start using UTC timezones (Andorra would be UTC+2) but CEST la vie I guess

So now that the time zone is added it looks like it was moved 3:45 earlier that it was?
