In a move perhaps nobody saw coming this silly season is the news Thibaut Daprela has left the Commencal Muc Off team and will be racing as part of the Canyon CLLCTV.

The 22-year-old French racer has quickly risen through the ranks in recent years to become one of the fastest riders on the World Cup circuit picking up two elite victories after securing back-to-back overall titles while racing as a Junior. Thibaut is always one of the wildest riders to watch and going forward he will be joining the stacked Canyon CLLCTV team.

bigquotesI’m very proud to be part of the Canyon CLLCTV. It’s a big family with multiple champions and results. The energy and technology that Canyon brings into the race world are amazing, and it’s the spirit I’m looking for. I am stoked to start the season with my CLLCTV Factory DH teammates. Also, it’s a great opportunity to be working with Gabe Fox and Fabien Barel, who have huge experience on the World Cup scene. I’m excited for this new chapter and already feeling at home on the bike. Let the fun begin!Thibaut Daprela

bigquotesIt is a great opportunity for our factory team to welcome Thibault with his young age next to experienced riders like Troy and Luca. I have been following Thibault's progression for many years, and his passion to win and determination are unmatched. I believe we have an incredibly strong team for 2024, and I deeply look forward to the coming season.Fabien Barel, Canyon CLLCTV Team Mentor

For 2024 the Canyon CLLCTV DH team will be supported by SRAM, RockShox, Troy Lee Designs, DT Swiss, Maxxis, Crankbrothers, Ergon, Maurten, Dynamic Bike Care, E-13, Chris King, and Albek.

As an anglophone who sees French as mostly just silent vowels and consonants, this is a step in the right direction to simplify the language for me.

@Hayek: I think about French having no vowels every time I hear Myriam Nicole talk.

Looks like you tried to spell a fart sound
  • 2 4
@Hayek: you like simplified things in your aeras, except that it's not simplicity but simplism. Nuance.
  • 5 1
ugh we're still doing that joke?
  • 1 0
@mcleodpulaski: That's not what I think when I hear Myriam talk.
  • 1 0
 @JiminOz: What do you think?

Also, I should have phrased my comment differently, it came across as an insult and I didn't mean it to be. I can't speak French, English is at least a second language for her, I have no room to judge, that is just what it sounds like to me, it isn't necessarily a bad thing.

@mcleodpulaski: She makes me go all weak at the knees - very sexy accent. Gorgeous eyes and smile.

It will be interesting to see if he loses a bit of the Pierron "all or nothing" attitude and learns a bit of consistency and precision from Troy.

Cool news!
  • 53 3
the all or nothing is pretty good.
  • 6 1
Nah! He already knows how to end the season on the 2nd spot, and being as he is, everything is so much more entertaining!
  • 3 1
my exact thought, if he focuses in consistency he might get a better shot at the overall world cup, rather than winning races individually, winning the overall by placing 3rd or 4th in every and all races (i didnt do the math, maybe someone in the comments can do it).
  • 5 0
@Narro2: it depends how everyone else places.
  • 8 1
@nateb: look up the 2010 DH season as the embodiment of that statement. Minaar didnt place worse than a third all year and got second in the overall because Gee had a masterful season.
  • 5 0
@Breeconay: Matt Walker won the overall in 2020 without winning a race.

Annoyingly, when I went to double check the results on wiki, someone has put the wrong Matt Walker (Pivot Enduro Matt Walker) on British DHer Matt Walkers page, but I dont know how you edit Wiki.
  • 1 0
 @snotrag: there you go
  • 5 3
Sorry but Troy's "consistency" hasn't paid yet. Still waiting.
  • 3 0
@danstonQ: yeah, he lacks that Killer Instinct, the Eye of the Tiger, maybe Thibaut and Troy can help each other.
  • 1 1
@Narro2: hopefully ... Troy Brosnan is ultra talented and has always been called "Mr Consistency" but what I saw till now is a talented outsider who grabs respect but no significant victories. That's a bit frustating for us... and for him I guess.
  • 4 0
@danstonQ: 3 elite WC wins and too many to count podiums... Definitely don't agree with "outsider" label.
  • 1 3
@Mugen: the "pretender" label is probably more exact.
  • 2 0
Seen him riding a lot as a junior and even before on régional and national races: he has always been a monster of précision and consistency. Perhaps it is just difficult to win an elite race not riding « all or nothing ».
  • 63 0
Wow. Dude is a threat to win any race - as long as he doesn’t crash. That’s quite a team.
  • 7 0
Hope the bike fits him well, and he can go as fast as he did previous.
  • 9 0
He’s like the Colin McRae of DH.
  • 3 0
 @BikesBoatsNJeeps: And the Colin Farrell.

 Congrats THBT DPRL

Interested to see if Barel can get him to ride the optimum (vs maximum) to get results.
He's always fun to watch.
  • 17 3
No doubt that Barel is gonna be an excellent coach to tame the beast.
Good luck Fabien! Wink
  • 9 1
@danstonQ: I suspect Fabien might have been the driving force in this signing. What a combination.
  • 4 0
My thoughts exactly. Quite a task to tame this mustang.
  • 7 6

I would have thought Max Commencal would have wanted to retain such a fast young frenchman on his bikes.
  • 45 1
As far as Max is concerned, there's only Amaury on the team. According to Max, even when lying in hospital bed, Amaury is still his favorite for the win.
  • 14 0
@marincelo: Amaury is the chosen one.
  • 44 0
From his point of view, Thibaut is sandwiched between Amaury and the new generation (Keep watching and you'll understand, there may be two juniors getting announced)
He made the right move changing teams at this point in time.

I'll have to change my name to Maxcommencebien if my team prediction comes true.
  • 3 0
The interview of Max Commençal in the film about Amaury Pierron clearly shows that Max preferred Pierron in term of "real champion". Max probably lost his patience with him, Idk.
  • 4 0
Heard Max C. Saying it's cheaper to make them than to buy them, talking about talent. maybe it's now cheaper to make them than to keep them.
  • 4 0
 @Maxcommencemal: the Alran boys?
  • 2 0
@Maxcommencemal: from his point of view, he races while Amaury sits out hurt
  • 8 0
@Maxcommencemal: I can't believe you can be this helpfully insightful on developments in the French scene and also leave us with puns that are accessible to moderately bad French speakers such as myself. The Pinkbike comments section is barely worthy of such multilingual brilliance.
  • 6 3
@The-Foiling-Optimist: for those who missed the joke, it’s funny because “Thibaut” means “bottom part of sandwich” and “Amaury” means “top part of sandwich” in French.
  • 2 0
@blissindex: If true, not sure what @The-Foiling-Optimist is on about with that(those) pun(s) being "accessible to moderately bad French speakers".
  • 2 0
@weeksy59: that would be my guess
  • 3 0
@Maxcommencemal: We saw them at Fort William British National as they were obviously spending a lot of time in the Commencal areas and riding with the Commencal boys, funnily enough including Daprela. They were night and day quicker than most, apart from one notable Brit on a Saracen Big Grin
But yeah i can see they'll be fast when thrown in the big races for sure.
  • 24 2
Good to hear signings and pickups still happen lol. Congrats Thibaut!

  • 4 0
 Where is Dante?

Did he leave?
  • 5 1
@Roost66: @Roost66: He was/is on the Canyon-Pirelli team which is an associate Canyon team focussed on developing talent. Troy, Luca and now Thibaut are on the premier Canyon CLLCTV factory team. The Canyon/FMD team that Tahnee Seagrave rides with is a similar set up to the Canyon-Pirelli team in that they are their own entity under the CLLCTV banner
  • 4 0
@DH-BK: Dante moved from Canyon-Pirelli to the the factory team last year.

@jomacba: 2024, the year education became a bad thing (Trump ftw!)

 @BenPea: Ignorance is bliss!
  • 1 1
@BenPea: No, I think it's the year everybody is offended.
  • 1 0
@jomacba: Well, you certainly seemed to take offence at having a spelling mistake pointed out...
  • 1 0
@commental: On the contrary! How could that be offensive? A spelling mistake is factually incorrect, and therefore I have zero grounds to be offended. I was more retorting to a response that was objectively irrelevant, and I think calling somebody a twat is fairly light hearted. I would classify that as banter which is actually quite entertaining. To be completely fair, I would have done the exact same thing they did and would expect a very similar response as I gave.
  • 2 0
@jomacba: what are you on about you silly c*nt? (that's light hearted in NZ ;-) )
  • 2 0
@jomacba: Fair enough. I obviously didn't read it with the right tone, feel free to call me a twat.
  • 2 0
@BenPea: Huge fan of that word too. Carries a bit more weight here in Canada. I typically use it as an adjective with the wife,. This way I'm technically not calling her that, but simply describing her behavior. Lots of Aussi friends here, so it gets thrown around quite light hearted. Ironically if somebody calls you buddy, that's generally an insult.
  • 2 0
@commental: To be expected through text. Hard to catch a tone or read body language.

This wasn't the news on signings I was hoping to get in the new year. Top rider on the best team goes to the team where folks are getting dropped left and right. I guess you have to go for the $ while you can...

Give me some news on folks who didn't have a team 2 weeks ago, please.

Im seeing more and more Canyon bikes out on the trails. Company must be doing well, and their bikes are obviously hittting. Congratulations Thibault, Hope to see you have a great year in 2024 and there should certainly be nothing holding you back from reaching you absolute potential riding with this team. Fantastique..!
  • 4 1
It wasn't planned that he leave the team.
My finger ☝ told me the pilot had a very bad behaviour and so was kicked out of the team.
Barel is from the same region as Thibaut and so he took him in his team.
  • 4 0
Oh damn, that's gonna be interesting! This is kind of team moves i've been waiting for.
