bigquotesWe decided to expand the range in the XC direction... It was a big challenge to do it well and good looking. - Zoobab, Designer

French helmet maker Urge have been standing out from the crowds for five years now. They have made their name by making the most distinctive helmets in mountain biking. Part-owned by DH legend, Fabien Barel, and French enduro pioneer, Fred Glo, the company launched with helmets for those disciplines. As a small company they didn't make the mistake of trying to do everything at once, but instead added to their range incrementally, each year adding a little more and covering another style of riding. This new helmet, the Supacross, as designer, Zoobab explains, "We decided to expand the range in the XC direction because since the beginning we wanted to make helmets for all kinds of MTB riding style. XC is a big part of MTB and it was the last category without Urge specific model, it was a big challenge to do it well and make it good looking."

The phrase "design language" is not one we hear often within mountain biking, yet it is one of the most apt to use when talking about Urge. Their helmets have a definite, unique identity. While it differs from helmet to helmet and has evolved as the brand has evolved, there is no mistaking the Supacross for a helmet made by anybody else. You can trace the lineage of the swooping side fins and circular vents from the Down-O-Matic, their very first helmet, to here. Where the Supacross differs from its predecessors is in the fit - it is their first helmet not to include extended coverage of the back of the head. Gone also is the peak, in favour of a small, integrated visor for a more streamlined, racey look. Inside there is their very first retention system. In the past their helmets have relied on clever placement of the straps to hold them in place, where the the Supacross comes with a ring system to keep it still as you ride. One feature it keeps from the rest of the range is the Gangsta pad system. Having the front liner come down around a centimetre below the helmet may sound insignificant, but it is ingenious in both its effectiveness and simplicity - in our experience it is one of the best approaches to keeping the sweat from your eyes.

bigquotesMost of all, it's still a real Urge. - Zoobab, Designer

Urge pair their design philosophy with a broader philosophy, trying to reduce their enviromental impact as a company. The EPS shell at the heart of this helmet is made from 90% recycled material, something we think is unique to Urge. This does not come at the expense of safety, the helmet is certified to CE1078/CPSC Certification standards. Coming from a gravity racing background, they put protection before weight, in their own words, "[they] make no compromises to save a few grams." The helmet weighs in at 260g, which means it isn't the lightest helmet in its class, but helmets are one area where we aren't looking for the lightest kit available. Zoobab sums it up concisely, "Most of all, it's still a real Urge with unique design, comfort, recycled EPS shell and straps, and, as always, very good security because of extra shell in specific places to cover your head."

They actually managed to do it. They actually managed to make an uglier helmet!
  • 90 4
Please note that this was designed by a man named Zoobab.
  • 39 1
BUT- it comes with a free camera lens jammed into each side
  • 27 2
What are they thinking when they design their helmets?!
  • 27 2
cbrider14... implying that they are actually 'thinking' during the design of this is pretty generous
  • 14 3
Urge wanted to design another "good looking" helmet. Can someone tell them that all of their lids are ugly?
  • 27 2
I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
  • 14 3
The holes on the side aren't camera lenses, there beer holders.
  • 13 3
Go home Urge, you're drunk-er (than usual).
  • 10 4
those french drink too much wine
  • 15 7
C'mon guys! It's definetly different. And as any different stuff, there'll be lovers and haters! It's nice we can choose the stile we like, otherwise everybody would be in the same TLD's look... I ride a Down-o-matic for 2 years now and love it! Also it's good looking imo!
  • 6 0
 Kinda Fugly!
  • 4 0
We have a trail named "Robot Frog". This helmet might well become compulsory attire on that trail...
  • 8 0
You know what they say about French design. " The french copy no one, and no one copies the french !"
  • 1 2
What they're thinking when they design a helmet is that they want to design a comfortable, well ventilated helmet that isn't too heavy but also doesn't sacrifice protection
  • 3 1
But what happens when a root or rock stabs you in the head through one of those GIANT vents?
  • 67 5
 Ya ermmm... "good looking"

So many pinkbikers concerned with 'looks' in mountain biking, it's not a catwalk, you're gonna take it on the trail and get it covered in shit!! as long as it functions that's all that matters right?
  • 45 5
No, looks trump safety for me if I'm wearing it
  • 43 2
the -barn: I demand both, safety AND good looks.

Also I actually think it is quite good looking, the way its heading everyone is just gonna end up looking like storm troopers.
  • 8 4
Reminds me of that hidious smith optics helmet that looked backwards, a few months ago.
  • 28 1
i can't wait to see these out on the trails, everyone is so serious nowadays, we need a few more clowns.
  • 5 1
Serously, are there awards for ugly designs. There are helmets out there that offer safety and (more decent) good looks.
  • 11 2
@ the-barn, you cant win. These are ugly as F**K!
  • 5 1
'It was a big challenge to do it well and good looking.' Too big of a challenge apparently.
  • 3 1
 @ SoCalMX - lols at least i tried :/
  • 3 1
You're farkin spot on there Mr TheBarn..!
  • 39 1
Sorry got no ERGE to buy

 I like my Urge helmet - It's a personal thing I guess.
I'll share this though: My trail helmet is an Urge All-M which has big round vents similar to the Supacross. On one of my first rides I pass a gas station and drop in to buy a snack for the ride. The girl behind the counter comments on the helmet - It goes something like this

She: That's a smart helmet.
Me: Thanks, I like it too.
She: But how do you turn it on?
Me: Huh?
She: How do you turn the music on?
Me: Come again, please (I'm not getting it)
She: The music! Those round things are speakers right?
Me: (mumbling) No, they are vents...
She: Oh I see - but they look like speakers
...

I was giggling the whole ride :-)
  • 9 0
Turn some jams on your phone and I bet the muggles would never no the difference!
  • 14 0
If they were speakers I would totally buy it.........
  • 3 0
 Hopefully they read this^.
  • 6 0
 Who, the muggles?
  • 19 1
This will complete my Halloween costume next year. I'm gonna be a giant beetle.
  • 19 3
Somebody better call Urge and let them know that mountain bikers don't want to look like road bikers.
  • 3 0
Not aero enough for a roadie.
  • 12 0
Sweet, built in speakers! But where do I plug in my IPOD.
  • 13 1
KILL IT BEFORE IT LAYS EGGS!!!
  • 11 2
Not a bad looking lid....seems most of the style haters are North American so in a year or two they will catch on to the design I am sure Wink
  • 3 1
 That was funny! Also, true.
  • 2 0
Haha! That's exactly what I was thinking... bought an Urge Down-o-matic and it's awesome! Confortable and nice!
  • 8 0
Finally, a helmet a guy with horns can wear!

 Thats a funky lid
  • 9 2
I like it. It's different. I also like how the company is environmentally friendly.
  • 19 3
 So ugly.
  • 9 1
 'Good looking'.....

 KILL IT WITH FIRE
  • 5 0
@ Downhillolly - or a silver bullet haha
  • 6 2
A video with some terribe music, kinda looks out of focus on my tablet. Probably the tablet though, to advertise a helmet. Never got to the end of the video! Nothing about its fit, its vents, its pads, it retention system, how well it works in a crash, why we should buy it over the competition etc. In the video.
  • 3 3
Just spotted the second video! Wish it was the first one. Negative props to me.... lol.
  • 1 0
Thank you pinkbike for changing the orderof the videos, much better now imo.
  • 8 0
 Holes for itch scratching?
  • 1 0
Best feature ever ! Seriously. Hate it when it starts itching under my helmet.
  • 1 0
I was told by an URGE Salesman that the holes are for "energy bar" or "food storage"!!!
  • 9 2
Wow urge, get your shit together.
  • 17 11
That is a sweet lookin helmet... Dunno what everyone is ravin about. Good job urge
  • 11 6
Agree. Got 2 urge helmets a down-o-matic and enduro-o-matic absolutely love them both are so comfortable and light. Urge make quality products at a decent price. Just because it doesnt TLD down the side people instantly hate it.
  • 6 2
What are you's on about, its brutal. I have a down-o-matic and it is a style icon as far as design is concerned. Love it. But this, not nice. And heh, if we are gonna spend big bucks for something I want looks and function.
  • 8 1
 Should have called it supaugly.
  • 6 1
A helmet designed for xc riders who like to wear Lycra in public.... And people are moaning it's "not cool looking" hmmmmmmnnn see where I'm struggling here!
  • 3 0
I think it's pretty cool looking. But I like the design of other Urge helmets too. I remember for a while when POC was first introduced, it had a lot of haters. Now it's a cool brand. Alas, the pinkbike bandwagon dictates the comments and the props.
  • 3 1
Urge has a unique look. Some people will like how they look some won't. I bought a down-o- matic a couple years ago and that will be the last time urge gets my money.. It is without a doubt the most poorly constructed full face helmet I have ever owned. The "gangsta" pad system is garbage. The pads fell apart in less than a year. there are much better helmets out there for less money.
  • 2 1
That is so so ugly, I will stick to my Enduromatic thanks. Why would you begin to damage the one thing that made your brand popular, the fact that your helmets looked normal. Your now going into giant alien mushroom head design territory the same as nearly all other helmet brands.
  • 1 0
I think urge always find their fans, I like endur o matic and yet I have many others helmet - for classic riding 661 recon, for fr tld d2, atc, I also ride with some of my endur o matic 2011 models. But as you all say, nowadays I dont know what is the urges way.
  • 6 1
Thats a whole new level of hurt.
  • 3 0
I don't like the way it looks, I am not compromising safety I am just going to wear a helmet that both looks good and keeps my head safe.
  • 4 1
I like it. I think all of the negative prop-ers would have been perfectly happy with it if the bikes had 26inch wheels and the riders had goggles with tear offs.
  • 7 1
 That is like 1982 ugly
  • 1 0
I dunno, I was a senior in high school in 1982, and seem to recall a very different kind of ugly... you should see my hair and the collar on the shirt in my senior photo...
  • 1 0
it may not be the nicest helimet around but since when did it became more important to look good in thg trails than having a helmet that is really safe. I would also like to pick a helmet that has both things but i care more about my safety than what others are going to say about me.
  • 1 0
There's no reason to think that any of the objectionable features of this helmet make it any safer though. Just imagine taking a branch through the enormous holes I n the sides as a hypothetical.
  • 1 0
lol, i'm intrigued by whoever is negative propping some of the comments. . coz by general census, this helmet aint gonna catch on. nice R+D work by urge though, i dare say it will be getting a redesign, or someones getting a p45 (new job for those non-British)
  • 1 0
I bought the Troy Lee A-1 helmet because "it looked good'. The helmet sucks. It is hot as hell. I own an "ugly" Enduromatic and even though it is a full face I find it to be more comfortable than the aforementioned helmet. wear a lid because it protects your head and is comfortable not because it is stylish. I actually like the look of the new helmet. It is just different.
  • 1 0
Still looks better than that Smith Storm Trooper. This one I at least could put speakers (or flashing lights or horns or....) in the holes, but that Smith is kind of like the naked emperor: everyone at Smith agreed it was a marketable design but interiorly was wondering who actually would buy the thing.
  • 1 0
Urge actually make some of the comfiest helmets about! Sadly the looks are "different" but if you don't mind the looks give them a try! Thougn maybe not this one, it's just a bit too ugly!
  • 1 0
I love the Down-O-Matic...i bought one a month ago, but this is Fugly! those round holes look like intented for horns! Anyways, if it works better than it looks it's OK for me.
  • 4 0
 Looks so disgusting hahaha
  • 2 0
Im an urge fan and I have an enduromatic but this looks terrible!!! Wot a ugly helmet that is....and yes it is a fashion show on the trials....who has better kit and wot not.
  • 4 0
That's the grossest thing I've ever seen in my life!
  • 1 0
i'd keep a little goldfish in a little glass fishbowl in that big hole in the side. Maybe two - one on each side. I'd call them Fred and Ted, and they'd be my freeriding goldfish buddies.

the werd "GANGSTA" cleared the room. I see no price tag. Good idea.
  • 1 0
That is why I will only buy a tld, fox, or 661. Cause they don't look like they were made from a little school girl... Damn that is ugly
  • 1 0
I'm glad they actually went with a retention ring system this time. The pad sizing system of the enduro models just didn't work for a lot of people.

Only reason to buy it is because it is "enduro spcifik" so it probabebly makes you ride faster automatcly...
  • 3 2
XC-helmets are all ugly and this one isn't an exeption. I still prefer old school skate helmet for everything else than DH.
  • 2 2
I have their DH lid, and like how it "looks". Works good too.

But have to cast my vote in the ugly pool this time. Interesting, but not really a looker Wink

I'm sure there is a target audience for this 'interesting' helmet, but it's definitely not on Pinkbike!
  • 1 1
You either like it or hate it. There is no in-between. That's what Urge put it. Great!

This helmet would look good on people who ride 29ers!
