Day one was a long day walking the isles, but the Day one was a long day walking the isles, but the goods are dope!
Interbike: 1, Splatt:0. Thats the score for the first day at the circus that is billed as Interbike. I get aroused just as much as anyone over the latest seatpost bearing or newest crank nipple but at the end of the day today I've decided I hate bikes. Too many bikes, too many new cool things and way too much "hired help" in the booths. Or something. Actually, its kinda like I died and they actually let me into heaven, some sort of super bike-heaven. And because I have been bestowed with the inner knowledge, I feel its my duty to pass on the goods to you. So here it is, Interbike 2006, day one.

Fun For All Ages-Chilliwack BC gets a DJ park. Fun For All Ages-Chilliwack BC gets a DJ park.
Well it is official Chilliwack has its very own Dirt Jump & Skills Park. Over the last couple of weeks there has been a weekly (daily for some) insurgence of builders (Gary Harder, Byron "Batman" Kitt, Ryan Popma and many others) working in a small lot on Webb Ave. The resulting outcome of hours of shovel work and watering is an awsome dirt jump and skills park. It has five dirt jump lines from beginer tables to a massive four pack (yet to be dialed in). There is also a pump track tucked away in the back corner. Beside the pump track is a kiddy loop for the true beginners to begin honing their skills on too.

Slopestyle is a new way to ride in the world... Ev Slopestyle is a new way to ride in the world... Everywhere...
To prove it, a young French farmer, David "Lovv" Jouault, from Acigné in Brittany, decided, two years ago, to dig his own trails and dirt jumps in his garden which he called "Trail et vaches" ("Trail and cows" which sounds like "milk the cows" in French) and he mixes his over-absorbing job and his passion for "newschool MTB".

Last year, he organized the "Slopestyle à la Ferme" (Slopestyle in the Farm) for the first time and he received a great success.

NS Bikes Suburban Hard tail frame-abused NS Bikes Suburban Hard tail frame-abused
A street hardtail is something that needs to be simple and strong. With those two points in mind you would think that it wouldn't be that hard to pick some random frame and bolt some light but strong parts onto it and go kill it. Ask any good street rider and you'll quickly realize that that isn't the case.

While simple and strong are important, the more street riding skills progress and the more technichal things get, demands for a lighter bike with geometry that is more suited to the rider and what he is trying to do become the top features. One more thing to consider is the brand. So and so's generic bike frame might have the same angles and weight you want but I personally want to ride something that I won't see the neighbor kid learning to a 'pop a wheelie' on down the street on, no offense to the neighbor kid.

Hayes Debuts Lightweight EC Trail Brake Hayes Debuts Lightweight EC Trail Brake
The new El Camino Trail hydraulic brake by Hayes Disc Brakes has many enhancements that maximize the brake’s performance. El Camino (EC) Trail’s minimal weight and increased power are the driving forces behind its success. It’s 30 grams lighter than Hayes’ original El Camino, bringing the 6-inch system weight below 400 grams with rotors and hardware. With a one-of a-kind master cylinder and new reinforced caliper design, this brake is powerful and durable in high torque riding conditions. EC Trail’s clamp force is 35% higher than Hayes’ original El Camino, plus its upgraded hydraulic design reduces heat sensitivity to offer improved lever feel. Set-up is also easier than ever because this brake has a patented tool-free pad change and reach adjustment.

Slowly pictures started to come in and we could see the excitement amongst the riders. Just over a week ago, our friends at Straitline Components called us up to say they wanted to be part of our contest, and added some amazing prizes the lineup.

Tales from the Trails: 2006 World Mountain Bike Co Tales from the Trails: 2006 World Mountain Bike Conference
You wake up in the morning. Your legs are stiff from the day before. Nothing but the sound of the river woke you up. You have somewhere to be but you’ll get there when you get there and not a moment sooner. You open the tent and the light hits your eyes. You can taste the cup of coffee, greasy eggs and juicy bacon that soon awaits you in town. Early in the morning you gather your self, going through what seems like an effortless routine. Helmet, pads, tools, cooler, snacks, a shovel and your bike. Everything you need to have the best day ever. I try and start as many days a year as I can like this. Just thinking of everything I need to go out and enjoy a day on my bike sun-up to sun-down.

Steve Peat wins UCI DH series overall! Steve Peat wins UCI DH series overall!
Nathan Rennie 4th overall and 2nd at Schladming WC DH Finals.

Heading into the UCI World Cup Finals in the charming Austrian village of Schladming, Santa Cruz Syndicate’s Steve Peat lead the points race by 178 points over Greg Minnaar. Mathematically, Peat was assured of a top two finish, but by no means felt he had a lock on the series overall. Minnaar was bringing his best game to the table and was going to challenge Peat to the end.

Schladming World Cup 2006-Training Schladming World Cup 2006-Training
Welcome to Schladming World Cup 2006. I have been looking forward to being here all season. Austria has been a country I’ve wanted to visit for many years now. Being home to some seriously hug mountains, Arnold Schwarzenegger and not to mention some fantastic wiener schnitzel, who couldn’t like being in Austria. I’ve been touring around Austria and area since Saturday, acclimatizing, getting over jet leg and enjoying a few Schladminger ale’s. It has been fun hanging out but it’s time to get riding.

Devinci Wilson gets abused and put away wet-more t Devinci Wilson gets abused and put away wet-more than once!
The Wilson is Devinci's cream of the crop DH race bike and the spec proves that it's ready to take on what ever you have to throw at it. We decided to throw a lot of rain, jumps and skinnies at the Wilson and see what it could take. The Wilson got handed arounded like a town bicycle(well it is a bike after all) in the begining, but found its way into the hands of Kat Duffels for some good time lovin'.

Review: GoldToothMafia Bashguard Review: GoldToothMafia Bashguard
A bashguard? What specifically is a bashguard? Oh, well it’s the metal ring thingy that guards your front rings from being damaged when you hit something. The ‘hoody ding ding’.

Most riders don’t take too much notice of their bashguard. There is always mention of someone’s new King wheelset, X.0 drivetrain or even their waterbottle holder with a ‘HardCore’ sticker on it. But never have I been in a trailside discussion group involving bashguards. Unbelievably, he/she (whatever gender a bashguard is) is the little mighty worker by your smelly feet, dealing with your mistakes, cut up by your chain, and left unnoticed. A poor little thing.

What a summer! What a summer!
KBC had an incredible summer…We saw a 400% increase of traffic over last summer and have had great reviews of all our trails.

This great response has given us the sign we needed to go forward with phase #2. We will be expanding the jump/skills park. We’re also adding 2 more freeride trails and we are starting work on the 50 Kms of single track XC trails. We have a lot to get done by next season to say the least… We want to get going fairly soon. We’re taking a bit of a break then….PUNCH IT!

Veterans Brian Lope and Katrina Miller Out-Duel Young Champions to Capture Titles at Jeep® King of the Mountain in Beaver Creek, Colo.

Michal Prokop and Jill Kintner Crowned Jeep King of the Mountain 2006 World Professional Champions Based on Season-Long Point Totals.

Given the outcome of the first two legs of the Jeep® King of the Mountain (www.jeepsports.com) 2006 Mountain Biking World Professional Championships, where Michal Prokop and Jill Kintner, captured the men’s and women’s titles in convincing fashion, it would take a brilliant day of racing by the star-studded field of competitors at the grand finale in Beaver Creek, Colo., to prevent a season sweep by these phenoms in their mid 20’s.
