Slack Randoms: World Cup Speeding Fines, Aaron Gwin's House Tour, Jet Pack Mountain Rescues & More

May 14, 2022
by Ed Spratt
We use Slack as our workplace communication tool at Pinkbike and we have a #randoms channel which we use to share an assortment of videos and stories from all corners of the cycling world and beyond... We thought a couple of the moments from the past week were too good not to share with a wider audience, so here are some of the highlights.

Nove Mesto Speeding Fines

photo

Ahead of this weekend's racing in Nove Mesto, the UCI sent a warning out to teams and media after a number of cars heading to the event had been caught speeding. It sounds like the racers are not the only ones going fast this week.

Specialized Pins New Cactus Carrying eBikes to Globe Brand

Specialized has hinted at a new range of electric bikes under the Globe brand. Previously Globe had been used to sell city bikes but now it appears Specialized has plans to make electric bikes carry a whole load of cacti, the perfect companion for bicycles.

bigquotesSpecialized’s purpose is to harness the power of the bicycle to pedal the planet forward. Globe will help us deliver on that promise in a new and more accessible way. Specialized

MTB Cribs Aaron Gwin Edition

bigquotesI decided to do a last minute video tour before moving out of our California house. We're going to miss this place a lot but looking forward to what's ahead. Hope you guys enjoy the tour. Dream Big! Aaron Gwin

Are Jet Packs the Future of Mountain Rescue?

bigquotesWe proved you can scale a Lake District Mountain (3100ft Helveylln) in 3mins 30 seconds, despite very poor visibility that would have grounded a HEMS Helicopter. The Mountain Rescue foot response is over 70 minutes typically. The route was 1.2 miles and 2200ft of height gain.

This is the latest in a series of Paramedic Response Exercises to prove capability in parallel with training up real Paramedics to provide first response Critical Care in hard to reach geographies. Cardiac, breathing or blood loss cases are time critical and require rapid stabilisation to buy time for evacuation. This system, akin to the rapid response of a Paramedic on a motorbike in an urban environment, will be the difference between life and death for many critical cases.

8 Savage Landings from Red Bull Flutag

bigquotesRed Bull Flugtag is a flying contest like no other, where amateur teams try to fly their homemade machines through the air and compete for glory. As well as trying to fly as far as possible, the teams also need to make a splash with the judges, and are assessed on their creativity, showmanship and flare for design But it's basically a rule of physics: what goes up, must also come down! We've put together 8 of the most savage landings from Red Bull Flugtag Red Bull

Juliano Neves is back with another wild mockup with this direct-drive specialized. The stem somehow manages to not look as weird as some of the setups we saw in Albstadt last week.

Someone correct me - all top American World Cup downhillers now live in either EAST TN or Western NC.

@Mavic101: I mean wouldnt you be fed up with wild fires. Mammoth Mtn is guaranteed to have a wild fire every year now a days. Lake Tahoe is also looking like that.

TN has windrock. and then Missouri also has a gnarly DH park. There is just more to offer in the East.

I grew up in Southern California. The State has amazing geography, history, culture, people, etc. There is a very good reason why so many people moved there.

The business climate is very tough unless you're a multi billion dollar tech/defense company, which is why I left. However, the lockdown/mask hypocrisy & craziness was the final straw for many of my friends and family. The latest data from Israel and the EU confirms what we knew (and apparently what the hypocritical politicians knew) all along: lockdowns and madates don't stop the spread of COVID19, but they were very effective at raising the cost of living, bankrupting small business, and enriching billionaires.

  • 5 2
@Mtn-Goat-13: Ivermectin was developed for Human use first, then when it was found to be incredibly efficacious, its use in livestock took off.

Ivermectin has had over a billion doses in humans, and the founder/inventor of it won the Nobel Prize. Its saved millions of lives across the globe, and saved tens of millions of Africans from river blindness. Its an extremely safe and effective anti-parasitic drug, and has clinically proven anti-viral properties. Ivermectins effectiveness for COVID19 treatment or prevention is not yet understood.

@hamncheez: A simple factual post that makes absolutely none of the controversial claims associated with ivermectin. Yet almost half the votes are downvotes.

Everything has to be totally black and white, and black and white is decided by who is saying it and whether the desired conclusion is supported. Whether it is the truth or not is irrelevant. Weird place we've come to.
  • 3 5
@Caligula1620: Ivermectin was invented as heartworm / parasite meds SPECIFICALLY for animals / livestock before being approved for human use for similar uses (including lice, etc). It is primarily used on horses today. I didn't say it shouldn't be used for lice, parasites etc - it simply has no basis for being used with covid, the med-community has found zero evidence that it works for that (it doesn't) and Dr. Oz saying you should guzzle it has zero meanting vs. actual science.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivermectin

And who said anything about me patting my own ass and being "bright" about it - clearly parasitism is the key word in your comments here: zero logic, sniping, bitching, zero facts and 1000% hyperbole.
  • 1 4
@hamncheez Ivermectin was invented 1st and SPECIFICALLY for animals / livestock - not humans - and was later approved for human use for similar uses (including lice, parasites, some skin infects. etc) - that's not the issue.

The issue is morons with zero med-science training or skill latching onto this (or any) med and claiming it should be used for covid when zero science / lit / study even existed about that in the med community that would suggest it works on respiratory virus and then various US russian state-news types blaring that its a "conspiracy" that drugs like this aren't being used to treat covid. That's the joke.

@Mtn-Goat-13: so wikipedia is a reputable source in your world? good to know, let me just go in and peer edit that link you posted real quick......

and again, my point is that you equating ivermectin to solely being used for horses is the same as saying other medicines that have dual applications shouldn't be used because of their original intended use. Just fyi, you brush your teeth with rat poison if you use tooth paste. SHOCKER!
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8817475
maybe you should review more reputable sources than just wikipedia lol.
It's not a guarantee that ivermectin will kill covid, but saying "people who take ivermectin are taking horse medicine" shows how little you understand the chemical composition of most pharmaceutical or even OTC drugs. maybe once CNN comes out and backtracks on their statements you'll change your mind. Maybe.
  • 4 2
@Mtn-Goat-13: just because you haven't seen the studies doesn't mean they don't exist lol. jesus is this the ignorance of youth? • 4 3
@Caligula1620 1) notice that I'm not personally attacking you so 2) your flip comments are not useful for having a conversation and 3) since I'm a science editor for 25 years I'm referring to actual studies and not strip-mined articles (which yours is) that aren't studies but just thinking out loud based on citing other articles (or studies). FYI - Ivermectin did not cure Zika (etc) as cited in your article.

IE - your ScienceDaily link is from *2018*, before the pandemic, doesn't mention covid and is not a study in any form or even close. It is simply a speculative article, having referred only to a Nat-Academy of Science article (which is also not a study but a summary of the proceedings of a meeting) about using Ivermecton on Zika, and other mosquito-borne illnes - and it was shown in 2017 & 2018 that it does not help with these diseases.

But people don't read NEJM - the Wiki piece summarizes it well (as it does many things). The 'horses' use is the majority so it is correct but here - so sure, I'll take a bath on that generalization. My point: I'm not saying this because I saw it on the news but because I review & edit studies & peer reviews before they are published so yeah: its kinda in the wheelhouse.

www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2115869 - this one is probably the best, illustrating how many people have been seriously ill & injured from taking Ivermectin for Covid. There are so many of these that its nutty.

Here's an article citing a composite of other artcles: www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2114907#article_citing_articles

BTW - what do you do that makes you an expert on medicine, science, and covid - or do you just like to berate people here like a teenager vs. having actual conversations?

I just don't get it. Ivermectin is safe, has been administered billions of times, and overdoses are unheard of. @Mtn-Goat-13 I read thru your link, forgive me if I missed it, but it doesn't mention any Ivermectin-induced illness or injury.

"There are few drugs that can seriously lay claim to the title of ‘Wonder drug’, penicillin and aspirin being two that have perhaps had greatest beneficial impact on the health and wellbeing of Mankind. But ivermectin can also be considered alongside those worthy contenders, based on its versatility, safety and the beneficial impact that it has had, and continues to have, worldwide—especially on hundreds of millions of the world’s poorest people."

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call Pinkbike.

@ullsen: Could be it's a giant house, but property taxes are actually pretty low in Cali at .74%

They do nail you to the wall once your income gets up above a million though by tacking on another percent to income tax.
  • 16 15
@DirkMcClerkin: well everything is way more expensive in ca. ...hence the mass exodus stage right.
And not really great place to raise kids anymore. It's quite sad and a failure.
  • 8 10
@DirkMcClerkin: a percent at a million?!? Try over 10% at ~300k, and over 12% at a million. Those aren’t what drive most folks out, it’s the 8-9% at 50-200k “average” salaries… And that .74 is rural areas, most cities it’s well over 1%
  • 4 4
@DirkMcClerkin:.74% is the average "effective property tax rate" right now, not the assessed property tax rate. Effective tax rate is the amount of current property tax divided by the current market property value. Effective tax rate is just a way to compare the property taxes nationwide based on current market home prices.

Per Proposition 13, the standard tax rate in the state is set at 1 percent. However, the county has some power to make adjustments to the rate. Assessed tax rates in California range from 1.1 to 1.6% depending on county. My county has property taxes at about 1.25%, but also there are a ton of "special assessments" that add on another .2%. So, the tax rate ends up to be around 1.45% of the assessed value after everything is calculated.

@ullsen: I’d gladly pay that in taxes if it came with health insurance and retirement and college tuition. I pay less in percent, but then save EVERY PENNY for the above expenses. I have no complaints about my situation. But tax % doesn’t say much about the value of what you get for your money.
Cheers.

@ullsen: Wide range of reasons to leave California. Basically, the same reasons people have migrated for thousands of years? People feel that the grass is greener somewhere else, so they are leaving. Hopefully for them, it is. Hopefully for me (I am currently staying), my grass is...eh...not green in California but at least good for me.
  • 9 3
@jrocksdh: Are you from CA or live here? It's true that everything is pretty expensive here! But I feel like everyone wants to create an ulterior narrative for why people are moving out of the state. Can't it just be for most people that it's too expensive? And your comment about raising kids here sounds like some sort of media talking point or something you saw on facebook. If you can afford to live here it's a fantastic place to raise kids. But that's true about most states in the US now, if you have enough money, most cities/states have great places to raise kids as long as you can afford the nice schools, activities, summer camps, etc.
  • 4 4
@OCSunDevil: saying “it’s too expensive” is shameful to entitled Americans. It’s embarrassing and signals defeat, so they try to say something insulting about the place they’re leaving. Its state that failed - not me. They blame everyone else for their problems, so I say good riddance!!!

Also it's somewhat daunting to invest your livelihood in an area prone to wildfires if the governor has committed to lettting the whole state burn to the ground every 4 years.

He just closed for $4.6M so even if he only paid interest on the loans he just walked away with $2M+ which will probably buy him a Travis Pastrana style compound somewhere in TN.  That company have been trying to hawk that set up to the military, pretty much chinned it off as it's fraught with 'what-ifs'. And quite glaring capability and implementation gaps.

You'd still need the casualty locating, that thing doesn't have the endurance to search nor the equipment of SAR aircraft.

If the casualty is located you'd need a good visual range else you could end up flying into a hillside.

What happens in the event of a failure of kit?

How much payload can the pack wearer carry to treat a casualty?

It's a solution for a problem that already has options; MRT/SAR/air ambulance have this area covered.
  • 6 5
I think it's a great idea to cut down on the wait time a patient needs to see a first responder. It can take time to get a SAR aircraft up in the air and under certain conditions, the SAR aircraft cannot safely operate. Mountain rescue teams also need to hike up to the patient which can also take a substantial amount of time. The jet pack responder only needs to be able to carry enough kit to stabilize a patient so that by the time SAR and MRT arrive the patient could be in a better shape for evacuation. The faster someone could be found and stabilized the better their potential outcome. Yes, there are limitations such as the jet pack responder needs to have a good idea of where the patient is, and helicopter and MRT responders need the same, and it's unclear what the max payload and endurance is of the suit. Their website is blank on technical specs.
