The Gamux Sego "Semi-Automatic" Gearbox DH Bike Is Available To Preorder

We've been following the development of Gamux's downhill bike for the last three seasons. The small Swiss team are doing several interesting things: combining a high-pivot, belt-driven gearbox drivetrain with a CNC-machined frame made with I-beams instead of tubes. Now, this radical bike is for sale. It can be pre-ordered now and should be available from March 2024.

While early versions had a four-bar suspension system, more recently Gamux settled on a high single pivot layout with a futuristic machined swingarm. The six-speed Pinion gearbox is still present, and a version with "semi-automatic" shifting is available thanks to Pinion's C 1.6 Smart Shift system. This uses a small battery to shift gears electronically in the gearbox. The shifting can either be controlled via an electronic shifter under the bar, or automatically, using a speed sensor mounted on the rear rotor to sense the speed and shift automatically so you're always in the right gear.

The Sego delivers 198 mm of rear suspension travel via a linkage-driven single pivot layout, said to be compatible with coil or air shocks. It can accept 29" or 27.5" rear wheels with different swingarms for each (there's no flip chip to accommodate either with a single frame). The 27.5" swingarm also reduces the rear-centre length from 460 mm to 445 mm. It's available in three sizes, and the ZS56-ZS56 headset makes it possible to fine-tune the fit with a reach-adjust headset. The frame weight is quoted as "low and central".

A frame kit including frame hardware, Pinion gearbox and Gates Carbon Drive is available for CHF. 6,250, or CHF. 6,700 with Pinion Smart Shift. The Manitou team build shown above with the Dorado Pro fork and Mara Pro shock costs CHF. 10,000 (CHF. 10,450 with Smart Shift). An Öhlins option with DH38.2 fork and TTX22 shock costs CHF. 11,000 - 11,450. The frame carries a 2-year warranty against damage "when used as intended".

 I like the idea of a gearbox and I think the bike looks great. However, whenever I see the words 'battery', 'eletronic', 'automatic' or anything of this sort, I just dismiss it.

 -look cool AF -My experience has been that single member swingarms experience a lot of rear wheel twisting under side load. Extremely small sample group of one, so YMMV. -slap a battery and the pinion motor on so we can self shuttle please

 Agreed on the single arm flex issues historically. Since pinkbike doesn’t like to quantify things like this with measurements, hopefully someone here will link to a German article in which flex is measured for comparison.

 Love the bike and the concept but I'd like to see some more detailed information on the bike for double the price of other brands. For example what's goign on with the carbon tubes?

 We use the carbon tubes to modulate frame compliance. We have invested countless hours in the past three years to figure out what works best for us. The Sego is very much focused arround having as much mechanical grip as possible available to the rider without is loosing out in the precision department.

 @GAMUXBIKES: Where in the frame are these bonded carbon tubes? Those dimly lit pictures of a black frame aren't making it easy to see details, I'd love to see some more detailed pics.

 @robw515: they are in the downtube and toptube. A total of 4 tubes are used and bonded to the 7075-T6 "spine of the frame. You can't realy see it in the picture here since its black on black. You can find better pictures on our webpage:

 @vhdh666: "mechanical grip" is acctualy coming from some car-racing friends of ours and referes to the ability of the frame (or chassis) to cope with the vibrations and loads that the tires and suspension would transfer into the chassis.
My english is by far not good enough to explain all the sientific details, but imagine the frame helping you to keep gripping in a rough offcamber section without bouncing of roots rocks and bumps. Maybee the best analogy is "frame-compliance" - correct me if im wrong Smile

 Has anyone done the number? The frame, drive, and gearbox is 7k USD.

I bought a Kavenz VHS Pinion frame for 3k, adding a gearbox with the same drive would add at most 2k.

Still a nice bike if you need a DH ride.

I think Zerode has a new DH Pinion sled in the works.

 It is a very cool bike, But $13,000.00 US dollars makes it crazy expensive when you consider the Frameworks DH Frame with a similar bike setup would be about $8,500.

 That reach, I'd love one but I struggle with anything over 400mm, I thought small DH bikes where getting back to about 425mm reach this year, well some are n some aren't..

 @sanchofula: not that small 5'7" but have short arms n legs that have me too bent over.. I like a 50mm stem for a 29 front to get weight over it as well, tried shorter but not as good grip. Bikes have got longer for taller people which was needed but for us short folk this small size is now longer than old XL frames. I'm quite comfortable on an old medium frame just under 400mm reach.

 @bat-fastard: hey now, my first XXL 29er was 430mm reach and rode well with a 120mm stem.

For real, shorter riders tend to do well with taller bars

 @GTscoob: Have a good high stack height on both my bikes, have a sweet spot at minute, had 50mm rise in past on 26 DH but when mini mulleted it dropped down to 25 to keep overall stack same. On my full mullet have 15mm rise as upped front travel to 180mm. Bars are also at 750mm wide but grips are cut down so holding at ends. Had wider but with short arms couldn't lift bike same on jumps, was better in corners but no good if not comfy in the air. Totally understand for tall riders, bikes where too small for them, but I know quite a few smaller ones like me struggling with reach and one who had to cut his seat tube down to get dropper post in. I've only a 75mm dropper on my craftworks but its enough and its a limit of frame that I knew before I got it.

 Complete bikes w/o pedals, depending on frame- and wheelsize start at 18.2 kg.

After the initial breake-in time of the gearbox, the added drag is virtually zero. Since you have a consistant "belt-line" throughout all the gears, it's acctually better than a 1x12 system in the upper or lower gears.

Pinion and Gates do quite good work in R&D to adress the whole drag-issue. We can just speak from our expereince on the DH bike - we only find benefits.

 @GAMUXBIKES: I ride a belt drive pinion bike and the belt for sure adds friction, as does the gearbox. In terms of durability and reliability, the gearbox makes sense, but the belt, probably not as much.

Do you sell the bike with a chain drive?

If you're racing, that's cool.
If you're smashing park laps at Whistler/Morzine then it's an expensive and unnecessary luxury.

I highly suspect most DH sales fall into the latter category.
Cool that this bike exists, but it feels like a niche within a niche.

 Been running single speed now in likes of Morzine for at least 7 years now, 32t front 12t rear on a 27.5, now running sb one tensioner as had a £20 ebay one first.
