It's back! It’s almost time to dust off the old armchair for some virtual team management. After a short hiatus in 2023, we’re excited to announce that Pinkbike's DH Fantasy League is coming back for 2024, presented by the good people at Five Ten.

With a fictional budget of $1.5 million you will choose your ultimate team of 6 riders (4 men, 2 women) and go to battle in the Pinkbike's DH Fantasy League. Show off your skills in choosing the best riders for all 7 rounds of the 2024 UCI World Cup, plus the 2024 UCI World Championships, and your team will score points based on how your riders performed.

Dynamic Rider Pricing
A big change for this year is dynamic rider pricing. Riders’ salaries will start the season based on their historical results and some insider insights, but those salaries will get updated after each round. Riders who are having a good season will rise in price over time, and riders who are struggling will drop in price.

In previous years there’s been a gradual convergence of teams as the best value riders became obvious throughout the season. Now with dynamic rider pricing, fantasy team managers will have to be more savvy as the leading riders price themselves out of their teams. This will also help more divergent strategies emerge—will you field strong mid-pack riders, or will you go all-in on an expensive top rider?

When rider prices change, if your team's budget gets pushed beyond the salary cap, your most expensive rider will be replaced with the least expensive rider. If your team is still over the budget cap, your next most expensive rider will be swapped for the least expensive rider. You can then choose to go and reallocate budget and make changes as needed. Of course, players will still have time to update their teams to their preferences in the lead-up to each round of qualifiers—they’ll just need to stay under the $1.5 million dollar cost cap. We’re excited for people to dig deeper into the field of riders, assess historical performances at specific venues, and overall fall further down the rabbit hole of DH nerding.

Bragging rights are the most important part of Pinkbike's DH Fantasy League and you can join up to 2 mini-leagues and compete against your friends. Each race round will have feature prizing and then at the end of all 8 races, we crown the overall Fantasy Downhill Champion and present the Grand Prize! The League is open to everyone, but prizes are only available for contestants from the US, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK.

Prizes
The League is open to everyone, but prizes are only available for contestants from the US, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK. If the top contestant is not from one of these countries, prizes will go to the next eligible person.

Grand Prize / Season Overall

At the end of the season the overall Fantasy Downhill Champion will get a $5000 USD cash prize*. Yep, cold hard cash to spend on whatever you want. Should there be multiple teams with the same total cumulative points scores, the grand prize will be awarded to whoever scored the highest points in round race #1. See Official Rules for details.

In addition to the Grand Prize, $5000 USD will be donated by Five Ten in honour of the Grand Prize winner to their charity of choice of Grow Cycling Foundation, Trash Free Trails or the Athlete Recovery Fund. See Official Rules for details.

Round Prizes / Every World Cup + World Champs

If you have the top team of the week, you'll take home two fresh pairs of shoes and an athlete-signed jersey. Each race round will have a prize for the Top Fantasy Team of that round. Should there be multiple teams with the same total points for that race round, the prize for that round will be awarded to whoever scores highest points in the tie breaker round. IMPORTANT: To maximize your chances to win the Grand Prize, we recommend you have your team created by the time Qualifying starts for the first round on May 4, 2024 and then before Qualifying at each consecutive round. You will want to maximize your points score and have your team present for all races.

 You can still carry a pitchfork for the shark week / ancient aliens / bigfoot is real panderers that are UCI/Disc while caring for results - minus anything to do w/ semis. All the riders are still mind blowing shredders and you can still care about DH & riding w/o supporting a DH version of the OJ Trial that costs $140 for 7 races - which I can afford but refuse to get fleeced for - and on some wacky app tied to your existing cable service.

So yeah - despise the shills - always but always still love the riders & results, watch highlights on Sleeper Collective and modify ur FL list as needed. FL is gonna be more of a highlight this year anyway over anything Discovery can film. Except for....

 The dynamic pricing is a good idea but the rules around it exceeding salary cap doesn't make sense and needs a rethink.

If the rider value increases so the team is valued above 1.5m then surely that is just good planning to pick well priced riders? removing the highest value rider penalises tactical picks?

For example if a rider currently injured is cheap now, I may sacrifice round 1 points to have them in my team for future rounds

 F1 fantasy has a system where if a divers price goes up and you already had him, you get to keep him and the value of your team increases permanently even if you swap the driver out.

 Kind of depends whether the riders receive a bonus when they get good results and get a pay cut when they do poorly, get injured or damage their bike.

 I think there is still plenty of opportunity for tactical choices under our system. With the 1.5m team price cap for everyone and the dynamic pricing, you will need to change your team for every round and make picks that you think will do well for that specific race.

We have done modelling based on past season data and with the dynamic pricing, there can be some interesting results. One example of how it might work is if you picked a rider for $25000 who then went on to do very well in the opening rounds their price will go up significantly. This could make you have to choose whether you can afford a higher-cost rider in your team.

After our testing, we found there are always some hidden picks that people will need to do some research and follow results closely to get a good return on the rider cost.

 @danielomeara: Yea but in F1 you have limited trades, here you can swap out as much as you want with no penalty.

 @edspratt: I initially didn't like the salary cap with dynamic pricing, but the more I think about it, the more some salary cap makes sense. Given the initial prices are set on last years results, it would seem that the best strategy would be to just pick mostly top riders who were injured last year and watch them quickly shoot up well past the capped level. Without the cap, we then just have a bunch of teams who can't make any moves as they'd be lowering their value greatly. Makes for great initial strategizing, but not to great longterm play.

With the salary cap, people are going to have to at least choose who they think will do atypically well at each round and the winner won't be determined by who picked the returning or breakout stars before the beginning of the season.

I would consider letting there by some flexibility. Like you have 1.5 million of purchasing power, but you have a bit of wiggle room with the dynamic pricing. Like your team value could go up to 1.6 or 1.7 million in value as your own riders increase. It will be really annoying when a $25k rider takes a top 30 and gets bumped to 50k and it triggers an automatic sell off of your $750k rider if you don't notice in time. It would also reward people for investing in those good picks. If they wanted to change out people, though, they'd still be bound by the 1.5 million purchasing cap.

 @edspratt: I get what you're saying, but I still think it's not the right excecution.

For example early last season I'm sure the likes of Cabirou, Davis and Craik would have been cheap. If I got them in when they weren't popular picks but they do well and increase in value, I shouldn't be forced to remove them.

 @mark-88: Thing is that their value in the PB marketplace isn't based on how popular these riders are but just on how they ended their previous season. With the previous "static" pricing, people could always pick up a good rider for cheap regardless of whether it is early in the season or later on when they're already proven to be good. With the new dynamic pricing, you actually get to reap the rewards of early clever pick and will maintain that lead as others can't jump on the same train as easily after that first race. The other thing I like is that people can't just rest on a winning team as it will become too expensive. So people will continue to have to be creative.

Maybe just give it a year to see how it works out and whether the fantasy competition suffered one way or another.

 @vinay: You don't get to reap the reward as after one good result that previously cheap rider's value will increase and cause someone to be removed from your team.

The dynamic pricing is better than static pricing, I am in agreement there.

 I live in a relatively poor country compared to the select ones where one can actually get FL rewards.
Still can't stop wondering, are 5 to 10 bucks a month preventing you guys from watching your favorite sport?

It's okay to dislike the seeding system or semi / final run confusion, but a couple months' worth of sport TV coverage will cost you what... a pair of brake pads at best.

I would almost guaranteed have paid if they just turned what Redbull was doing into a subscription. But a worse product than what I was watching for free a couple years ago?  Hell yeah! I am a little bummed about the valuation system. It seems impossible to build a team with more than two true contenders. I remember fantasy enduro in the day made it possible to field a few good riders on your team.

 I hope people will enjoy the valuation system once it gets going. Nobody can run away with it through lucky choices early. Now you'll have to do what team managers actually do, making some hard choices and predictions and digging into some of the data. It was a lot of fun when we tested simulated seasons, but admittedly we are giant nerds.

 @brianpark: I think the system is cool. There is a bit less weight on the price tag PB put on these riders at the beginning and requires fantasy-competitors stay on their toes as a clever "winning team" can't be kept together either (as it would become too expensive). I don't care too much about the competition element (I am not too competitive plus there is nothing to win for me anyway) so I just assembled a team of riders I like regardless of whether they'd win.

 It's literally the same as any fantasy sports. You can never build a team of all the top players, that's what makes it difficult. If it was unlimited there would be very little variation in the teams. Nobody is going to pick somebody who has a low chance of doing well if they don't have to.

 Maybe they don't want contestants from countries hosting a WC round because of possible sabotage (and they expect a Scexit before May). Would still exclude quite a few countries indeed but judging by their rules page, it seems like quite a bitch to work through all the legal stuff so they just stopped when time ran out. Not worth the hassle especially as chances are an EU citizen might still reject the award if they'd win it because of all the customs that need to be paid.

 Discrimination I tell you, if by some miracle I won, my country doesn't qualify for the prize. In past years fantasy league has been a good way to jinx my favorite riders so if I play this year choose fast juniors mainly.

 Looking at rider pricing and flat out saying THAT needs a rethink: $750k for a top shelf rider--a full $200k increase!?!!! WTF?!?!! That makes it insanely difficult to get more than one of our 6 riders on the box. Picking 2 top shelf riders left me with $10k remaining. Add in dynamic pricing and its going to make picking a team an exercise in mediocrity.

 With 2 mil, everyone is gonna pick similar people, no? Pick two of Amaury/Loic/Finn/Jackson for every round and you're gonna do okay. People with more knowledge of ALL the athletes have a better chance at winning with a lower budget as you have to know what the riders are doing outside of the top 10. Also, EVERYONE is playing with 1.5 million so it's an even playing field that way... not like someone else is spending more than you.

 @juanargent: He got knee surgery. That injury ended up being worse than they thought it was. I'd be amazed if the kid raced. He's an amazing guy and he's young so he's going to heal fast... but still. He'd be showing up with zero saddle time.

 We talked about adding juniors. Depending on how racing shakes out for 2025 I'd love to see teams be made up of 2 men, 2 women, 2 juniors (1 male 1 female).

 @blacktea: I think it's the opposite. With the field it is right now it's essentially Holl and everyone else. Rachel at least opens the door to another winner. Only way Holl loses right now is if she crashes.

Tahnee is hurt and hasn't been the same for quite some time. Pom Pom same deal. Marine is working her way back into form but she hasn't been a legit threat for awhile. Camile depending on the technicality and the conditions but a dry fort is too fast. Holl runs like 3-5 mph higher traps. Nina can put one together.

But for the most part it's like.... watching Jett Lawrence.

 @onemanarmy: in any case, in my opinion, Valentina can do very well for several reasons. She's very motivated, she's a quiet girl and her mind helps her stay focused, the world of dh in Latin America is in turmoil and it means she's training well. Good luck with your team Smile
