Diablo Freeride Park, located only 47 miles from downtown New York City, announced today that preliminary details regarding the sixth annual U.S. Open of Mountain Biking are now available. Official online athlete and team registration will begin March 7th at 9am. Historically, the U.S. Open field is predominately pre-registered and all interested participants are urged to register in advance to secure their qualifying position.

Valparaiso is a port city that is embedded in the seaside hills in Chile. Built in between slopes and summits. A city with millions of stairs instead of walkways and lifts that climb up and down the hills were roads can't go. With my recent foray in to speaking, particularly with my Trials of Life school presentation, I am often referred to as a motivational speaker. The word motivate in this context has never really felt good to me; let me try to articulate the reasons why.

During the last week or two of December and first few weeks of January, we are hit with advertisements showing fit, sexy women working out, and dudes with eight packs and big smiles. The prime purpose of those images is to motivate you to get in shape as a new years resolution. Many people get off with great gusto, sign up to the gym for a year, and proceed to make an honest effort to get that body they have always dreamt of. The overindulgence that for some reason is now tied with Christmas certainly helps create the guilt necessary to fuel the fitness club membership. My wife who worked as a fitness instructor at one of these gyms can attest to this failsafe process.

As a new feature here at BROOKLYN, we're devoting a few Fridays every month for in depth, long term reviews of the products that get sent our way.
First up is the Kowa Suspension 160s Air single crown fork (not to be confused with Showa).

It's February. Normally at this time each year I am skiing or sitting in a cold, damp university classroom - but not this February. This February (thus far) has been full of sun, skateparks, bikes, and beaches.

Why you ask? Because I'm in California!

Since 1998, when we joined forces with Whistler Resort in British Columbia to create the first Kona Groove Approved Bike Park, we have been the leader in developing exciting, sustainable bike parks throughout the world. And we haven’t stopped.

This year we have added four new Groove Approved venues to our dirt-filled quiver.

New Santa Cruz Syndicate member, Greg Minnaar, had a chance to check out his new digs with a trip to Santa Cruz in February. Being welcomed to the Syndicate 'family', he was made to feel right at home (and informed that once you join the 'family', you never leave....).

Banshee Bikes has been a big name since the 'huckfest' we knew as the late 90's. There were more Morphines, and Screams in the average garage than McDonalds wrappers on the passenger seat. After the 'huckfest' died off, big bulky bikes were turned into Pop machines, and Parking Meters. As the Industry shifts, Banshee Bikes continues to be up there with the big boys, especially with the creation of there Downhill, and Slopestyle bikes. The Wildcard is Banshee's answer to the growing love for Slopestyle bikes in the industry, and it is definitely a head turner.

The Winter Splinter MTB Park competition is back on track and it's going down Sunday February 24, 2008 at the Factory Skatepark in Newnan, GA. The Winter Splinter is an indoor jump jam/bike battle type of competition for 24” and 26” wheel bikes. We are adding an additional class this year, which means there will be more winners and more opportunities to take home prizes. There will be an amateur, expert, and pro class, with amateur and expert winners taking home awesome prizes and the pro class will get cash prize payouts.

Bike-nerd heaven! I tried my best to see it all and talk with builders but it just can't be done in one day...so here's some of the high points of the show.

I have witnessed a few good cases of "pro's exploding onto the scene" in my riding career so far, but nothing beats Ben Boyko. After making the switch from BMX to Mountain bike, Ben was supported by a small North Shore based bike company labeled Cove Bikes. Shortly after gaining the first ever rider's segment for the Pist'N'Broke guys, and gaining segment of the year for that same segment in CKD, Ben was signed by Norco Bikes. In 2007 Ben was the crowned Crankworx 2007 Champion, and later signed a strong 3 year bond with Norco Bikes. This guy has been around the block, and knows his ups and downs.

Rayz MTB Park, based out of Cleveland Ohio, held a revolutionary event on the weekend. The First ever organized game of BIKE was held, and more than enough riders came out to rock the ramps, and have a generally good mid winter riding meeting. The time of season may not be idea for riding, but indoor riding will never get old. Check this out.

Dunbar Cycles is under new ownership as of the 1st of February 2008. The two joint owners are local rippers Rob Venables and Jerusha Millar, both dedicated riders and true regulars on the trails all over the lower mainland, Sunshine Coast, Victoria, The Island, and Whistler. Cup Oxford Contrapedal Valparaíso Down Hill 2008 - The biggest spectacle in Latin American based Mountain Biking

The European champion, the current number one pan-American and Canadian race, American and Latin American riders will challenge the hills, stairs and alleys of Valparaiso. It is the sixth version of this spectacular DH race that will take place Sunday the 17th of February, and has as special attraction - the riders cross the former Jail of Valparaiso.

In 2000 a small French company was started, brandishing the name Commencal. Since that time they have been producing high quality bicycles, that appeal to all audiences. The Max Max hardtail was created as an affordable bike, but with a high quality frame. Created with the idea in mind that riders would purchase the bike at a young level, and slowly build it up over time to a bike of a higher caliber. The Alberta Freeride Awards are back and at ‘er for another year and it's time to get your nominations in for the coveted awards! Chris Kovarik took the win and the money again at the 3rd Fontana winter series. The conditions were back to the usual dry and dusty terrain usually found at Fontana. Even with a bobble entering the rock garden and missing the fastest line through Chris was able to take the win mainly due to his cornering speed which was visibly much faster than the rest of the field as you watched them coming down a large percentage of the course.

Vancouver, B.C. Geoff Gulevich signs a two year contract with Rocky Mountain Bicycles. This recently inked deal will see the Rocky Mountain Bicycles Team begin a new era of freeride. Geoff Gulevich (N. Vancouver) along with Kyle MacDonald (Whistler) and Andrew Sherry (Vancouver Island) will follow the big footsteps put down by Wade Simmons the “godfather of freeride”.

For 2008 the Subaru-Gary Fisher team is returning the core of its team including Olympic hopefuls Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, Willow Koerber, and Heather Irmiger. However, the biggest resigning during the off-season was that of title sponsor, Subaru. Subaru is continuing its commitment to mountain biking with a three-year deal that will ensure the continuation of the most successful mountain bike team in America through 2010.

I Have A Dream.....And A Plan To Go With It. What that dream includes is within the lines of this story. The plan is there too, but you guys only care about the bike.

A great man once said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." My dream is not going to end up being as important in history as the great Martin Luther King Jr.'s was, but I assure you, one day, it will happen.

2003 World Champion Greg Minnaar has teamed up with Gamut USA for the 2008 season. After his successful shoulder surgery last October, the South African rider is well prepared to write the next chapter in his already illustrious career during this year's campaign. Gamut is very pleased to have added Greg to its select team of riders, and looks forward to watching Greg race all over the globe this coming year.

We are just under a month away from the first Island Cup Race of the season. The Nanaimo Super D will be held on March 9, with registration starting at 9:00am and the race starting at 12:00pm. Registration will take place in the same place as last year, just up the road from the Wastelands Motocross track in Nanaimo, but with a new and improved course and format. The map of the new course has been posted on our website. Any person wanting to race the Beginners category will be able to do so free of charge however they must purchase or be a member of a GRMBA affiliated club. The focus of the beginner category is on participation. There will be prizes for the winner’s of the Intermediate men’s and women’s races and one dollar from each men’s and women’s entry will be going to the winners of the Expert category.

While not the first or only people to fabricate a chain retention device, MRP is arguably the first to do it properly. When the System 1 was first produced in 1996 it set a precedent for chain guides. When a lot of other people were installing spring loaded derailleur tensioners or chain stay mounted rollers, MRP began to produce the simplest solution to what turned out to be a not so simple problem. As time passed, bike designs evolved, and so did the rider's skill. Their line of guides also expanded to include the System 2, the many options of the System 3, and the latest design, the MRP G2.

Enduro Fork Seals first stated making a name for themselves with their fork seals upgrades and cartridge bearing kits. For the past two years they started manufacturing gold – well not really gold, but some pretty nifty tools that are worth their weight in gold!

"Focus" is photography exhibit inspired by freeride mountain-biking, and when I say freeride I mean alternative/less often used ways of riding the bike.

This is the first exhibit of it's kind (as far as I know) in Serbia, where when you say MTB everybody thinks XC, so this is my contribution to expanding horizons about the sport we are all passionate about.

A story about our "snow ride" up on Vedder Mountain. One local overcomes his fears by hitting the well known "40" footer in the snow.

It was cold, that's pretty much the best way to describe Vedder Mountain on Sunday(January 27th). Justin and I headed up Vedder Mountain in Chilliwack to ride the trail "Dilemma" in the snow.

There are a key group of kids I ride with in Kelowna and it is hard not to have fun when you are around them. This summer has been the best time of my life, be it the goofy little fun sessions on some little stuff, or an unreal DJ session where everyone is pushing each other to learn new things, I couldn't ask for more. Federau is chasing a spot on the Canadian team for the Olympics in Beijing. In order to qualify for selection, Ricky needs a top 16 placing in World Cup competition in one of the first 5 World Cup events prior the end of May 2008. If he is able to secure a spot in the pool, he then needs to show the selectors that he is one of the 2 fastest Canadians in order to attend the Olympics. Already qualified are Geoff Kabush of Comox and Seamus Mc Grath of Victoria. “When I compare my results to the other guys, I know that I am as fast or faster then any of them on any given day. Seamus had that awesome result (16th) at Mount St. Anne last summer and Geoff is one of the best in North America. When I look at lap times from St Felicien where I was 21st and less then 2 minutes out of the top 16, I know that I am capable of a good result.”

In early January 2008, members of the International Mountain Bike Trade Teams, Technical Support and Race Organizers (IMTTO) crowned Kokanee Crankworx the highest rated freeride mountain bike event of the 2007 season and the 9th highest rated event in the world (Fort William was number one). On the event scene since 2004, Kokanee Crankworx has emerged as the must-see event of the summer event circuit.

Last Saturday, February 2nd, the third anniversary of the Nissan White Style presented by Kona showcased sizzling international mountain bike freeride action in Leogang, Austria. The riders ripped the perfectly shaped slopestyle course until the late evening. Trond Hansen from Norway won the contest by showing the crowd a trick loaded run with lots of style. But also the other competitors surprised the spectators with amazing riding performance.

Big Mountain Bike Adventures announces dates and the itinerary for Swiss Bliss, an exclusive, unique all-mountain women’s-only bike adventure in Zermatt, Switzerland.

After a hugely successful experiment in 2007, Big Mountain has scheduled the 2008 Swiss Bliss Women’s Only trip for August 22-29, 2008. The 8-day all-inclusive trip is designed for women of all ages and lifestyles – the only common denominator is that they have to be intermediate to expert riders.

Resurrect the Kelowna Bike Club-

The former Kelowna Mountain Bike Club is being re-launched this year after a period of inactivity. This club will be a key part of any long term strategy to keep mountain biking a viable activity in the region. As a link between the interests of the riders in the area and several levels of local, regional, and provincial government, this club will seek to promote, protect and preserve the world class trails and resources in the Central Okanagan region.
