Matti Lehikoinen Injury Update Matti Lehikoinen Injury Update
It's been a season to forget for the Finnish Pinner, with his latest crash in training at the Canberra World Cup taking him out of the 2008 season.

Matti returns home to Finland tomorrow, Monday, after it was decided to have surgery in his home country and not in Australia. He has broken the radius in both hands with the right hand being worse than the left. There's still no 100% confirmation on the condition on his scaphoid bones in both hands at the moment, but the possibility of fractures does exist and these need to be explored with his doctors.

Red Bull Rampage: Event History Red Bull Rampage: Event History
Launched in 2001 and held annually through 2004, Red Bull Rampage brought the creative, unrestricted ethos of freeride mountain biking to the contest arena while staying true to the sport's core ideals. Poised on a sandstone ridge in the brutal landscape near Virgin, Utah, riders were free to choose whatever line they dared between an established start gate and the finish line 1,500 vertical feet below. Exactly what happened between those two points has become legendary.

Giro Remedy: A Full Face Brain Bucket Giro Remedy: A Full Face Brain Bucket
Putting on a 'Brain Bucket' is one of the smartest things your wife/girlfriend/parents can get you do to, it's actually the smartest thing you can do for yourself if you want to enjoy Freeride/DH'ing for a long time. Wearing your helmet and armor isn't 100% proof you're going to walk away from a crash. I've learned a hard lesson this summer racing a DH and I crashed so hard that if I didn't have the body 'armored' up I would be a pile a Jell-O and useless to my loved ones. Impacting the ground at a any rate of speed is nothing I signed up for. Riding within my ability is the key and preached by the top racers in the world who risk life and limb to beat the clock. Wearing the right helmet when you go down will improve your chances dramatically. WEAR YOUR HELMET (And Armor While Riding A Bike!)

Fluidride Cup #4 Port Angeles. Dry hill, sloppy wet!

After my double right side spanking a little while ago, I wasn't really sure how quickly my body was going to bounce back. It felt like one of those injuries that was going to be with me for a long time. Well with a lot of rest, great physio and loads of acupuncture I'm feeling like my a million bucks again. Once I was back on the pony (my kick ass Devinci Wilson), I was back to life...and couldn't sit still...as usual. So with that said, I hit the road in search of more good times. I looked and I found. I loaded my car to the tits, said goodbye to Nelson once again for another undetermined length of time and hit the road. I eventually made my way to Whistler for some pre-Crankworx riding/fun, but not without a stop in Revelstoke for a few days of incredible riding. Thanks for all the fun Revy crew!!

The straight goods on Kicking Horse Bike Park, straight from the trail crew's fingertips.

Summer isn’t over until the white stuff flies at Kicking Horse Bike Park. The best part of our season is just starting. In September the sun has stopped sucking the moisture out of your body, the incessant drone of bugs fades, the colors change, the light is sharper and richer, the RVs are mostly off the highways and the trails are buff. All season’s work has been for the sake of killer riding in September. Are you coming?

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the Truvativ HammerSchmidt launch in the beautiful town of Pemberton B.C. Great ascents that rewarded you with even better descending are in abundance there and the terrain is what HammerSchmidt was built to excel on.

For some time there has been some gossip on bike forums about whether Martin is riding for NS Bikes or not. Here is the story...

Martin chose to ride on NS frames and components some time ago. It was his personal decision and the company had nothing to do with it. However after spotting their Suburban frame and other parts on his bikes, NS contacted Martin and started talking about potential co-operation. In Martin's own words, "NS Bikes was the only brand that develops in a good direction, with light and strong parts".... It took the guys some time to work out everything with Martin and.... now the news is official - Martin will be riding for NS Bikes for the next two seasons!

This year the Kokanee Crankworx took notes from its Colorado counterpart and put a best trick comp into the mix of the week-long mountain bike festival. And it was more than just big tricks and bikes.

A handful of brave kids on bikes throwing down some of their best tricks out of their respective goody bags. At stake was $6,000. $3,000 for each different section of the boneyard they were riding. The first session took place in the middle of the boneyard on a big double next to the big Monster judges tower. The second session was on the last step down stunt. Every rider on the course was on point and every rider was busting out with not a single drop of fear in their eyes. To say the least, it was dope.

Transition Days part 2 Transition Days part 2
The crew at Transition Bikes love to ride what they build and it was evident that they ride a lot by the way they charged on all the rides we did. The bikes they build are built to get out there and ride hard on, because that's what they do on them. Both days were filled with lots of riding and information on the company.

Here's a look at some new models coming out soon:

Transition Days part 1 Transition Days part 1
A few days ago I had the pleasure of attending Transition Bike Days down in Ferndale Washington. Transition is having two showings for their dealers and invited media to go over the changes that will be coming up in their model runs. That and to show everyone that they ride the bikes they make and the local trails that they ride those bikes on.

Here is my first update from Transition Days:

Kevin Katinas wins SDG Dirt Comp event three in He Kevin Katinas wins SDG Dirt Comp event three in Heerenveen
Kevin Katinas wins the SDG Dirt Comp event during the opening of Bikepark Heerenveen. It was one of the best days for Dutch dirt jumping yet.

The circle was completed in the big village of Heerenveen, the scene that started with Kevin Katinas jumping of stuff with a XC bike, has grown into a DJ scene with a small hard core, but that has a huge bunch of kids that also want to ride somehow. And with the opening of Bikepark Heerenveen recently, after years of hard work , and with Katinas winning the third SDG Dirt Comp event at his home trails, it was another step in making this scene more productive and alive for years to come.

Transition Syren - Trail Tested Review Transition Syren - Trail Tested Review
Source: Ian Millar

Once again the folks in Ferndale Washington have broken the mold on bicycle design. Transition Bikes latest hit comes in the form of a female specific freeride frame titled the Syren. So how does Transition define a freeride female specific bike? Simply by building a bike with the help of 30 female rippers based on the current trends they are seeing in all-mountain fun. A bike designed for bike parks, local trail networks and of course epic singletrack.

Darcy Turenne - Interview Darcy Turenne - Interview
Darcy Turenne seems to have something figured out in the industry of ours as she is one of the few successful riders making it as a freerider and she's a woman in a sport heavily dominated by men. It's great to see the ladies side of the sport gaining recognition and support from with in and outside the industry.

While in Whistler a few weeks ago I was able to sit down with Darcy for a bit and talk to her about life and bikes. Here's what she had to say:

Kakah's Custom Big-Mountain Wheel Build Kakah's Custom Big-Mountain Wheel Build
The Pinkbike crew gets to roll on the latest and greatest all too often. You guys call it "testing", while I call it living the dream. But what do we choose when we have to slap down some of our own hard earned coin on parts for our ride?

I've recently invested in a set of brand spanking new custom wheels for my all-mountain bike. I only wanted a set of wheels that approach the weight of XC race hoops, and something wide enough as to work good with 2.5" width tires, and sturdy enough to stand up to the odd booter or big gap if I am feeling zesty enough. That's not too much to ask for is it?

Read on to find out what I chose....

Crankworx Colorado 2008 - Day 3 - Slope Style Fina Crankworx Colorado 2008 - Day 3 - Slope Style Finals
Today was the main event, the big money and what the majority of the spectators came up to watch… but to no one's surprise we awoke to grey gloomy skies and thunder shower warnings. It seems that for most of the bike events it will rain or be really windy on the main event day, and it wasn't going to change for Crankworx Colorado. The practice was very windy and cloudy but when the semi-finals started it all cleared up and was nice, hot and sunny. The Lacondeguy’s were the first riders to drop in since they missed qualifying and practice due to 3 days of canceled flights in Spain, but they definitely didn’t look rusty as their normal confidence and go big style came right out to line up with the top riders from the weekend.

In an impressive return to the winner's circle, Team Monster Energy Iron Horse's Sam Hill (AUS) took the win today at the Quebec ski resort of Bromont, just outside of Montreal, and in doing so, earned back the leader's jersey he'd lost last week to main rival Greg Minnaar (RSA). Not only did Sam win the final, but he won qualifying in the semi final which gave him the maximum 250 points against Minnaar's 182 points.

Crankworx Colorado 2008 - Day 2 Crankworx Colorado 2008 - Day 2
Unfortunately today didn’t start out so good for our good bud Joe Perrizo… the course opened and the riders started to practice for the best trick contest this afternoon and everything was great except for the wind. Joe ended up going for the last drop and got blown like a feather and landed very hard on his head and was out for about 3-5 minutes. After transporting him to the clinic/hospital up here in Winter Park, they wanted to get him down to Denver for a CT scan on his head to make sure nothing was messed up in there, and it seems pretty OK but he will have to stay for a couple days 'til they feel he is OK to go home.

Crankworx Colorado 2008 - Day 1 Crankworx Colorado 2008 - Day 1
Crankworx Colorado's debut last summer turned out to be a major hit in the mountain bike world, bringing the scene's top riders (pro and amateur) to compete in a world class slope-style event located in Winter Park Resort, about a two hour drive from Denver International Airport. The second annual Crankworx Colorado is being held this week from July 29 - August 3, where Pinkbike.com has sent Mike Reid and myself, Ryan Meyer, to Winter Park Resort for daily coverage of the festival. Nick Meyer and I flew into Denver International just before noon on Monday where we met up with Kelly 'the Kiwi' and hung out for a few hours to meet up with all the other guys coming in on flights around three in the afternoon. Joe Perrizo, Graham Agassiz, Brendan Howey and Kurt Sorge met us at the baggage claim and we slammed into a cargo van in return for a hefty fee shuttled us up to Winter Park.

Drug tested at the World Cup - Mont Sainte Anne re Drug tested at the World Cup - Mont Sainte Anne recap.
Mont Sainte Anne-The weather picked up where Nationals left off-

For those of you who read Simon's article on the National Championships, you may know what this means. For those of you who didn't, I'm referring to the copious amounts of rain and mud that arrived just in time for race day. Coming back to Quebec for the third time this season this is what I was greeted with, and if it wasn't for the warm temperatures and humidity I would almost have thought I was back in a Vancouver winter. But it takes a lot to keep mountain bikers off their bikes, and torrential rains and thick, deep mud are nothing more than a good reason to put on pants instead of shorts for a day of riding.
