Now Finished: Ask Me Anything with Brage Vestavik

May 19, 2022
by James Smurthwaite

Although he's been on the scene for nearly a decade, the past couple of years have seen Brage Vestavik rise to the levels of mountain bike superstar. As a World Cup racer, tall tales of his style and aggression were whispered around the pits but the results never seemed to follow. So, Brage took a step away from the circuit at the end of 2019 and found a much better path.

Since then, Brage has been building a fearsome reputation as a freerider. He started appearing at Fest Series, Hardline and making grimy, raucous edits. He started catching the attention of the right people and an invite to the inaugural X Games Real MTB competition followed in 2021. of all the athletes featured in the competition, Brage was probably the most surprising but he wasn't going to let that faze him. Working through the brutal Norwegian cold, he crafted a line that allowed him to mix old-skool wooden stunts with modern tricks and made going huge cool again. Although he didn't win the official prize, he took the People's Choice Award and won our Video of the Year Award for the 90 seconds of madness at the end of the year.

Since then, he's made his first trip to Utah for Rampage and has been signed as a Red Bull athlete. Now, the Viking is here to answer any and all questions you might have. Fire away!

How ‘Ask Us Anything' Works:

Starting at 7 AM PDT/ 3 PM GMT on 19 May, 2022 you can type your questions for Brage Vestavik into the comment box below this article and he'll have a crack at answering them from 9 AM PDT/ 5 PM GMT. Sometimes your answer will pop up in a few seconds; others may take a few minutes while Brage works his way through questions. Everyone who posts a question, large or small, will be taken seriously.

To make this go as smoothly as possible, try to follow these guidelines:

• Keep your questions relevant
• Stay focused and to keep your questions on one topic if possible. You can always ask about another item later
• Try to keep your questions to about 100 words
• Ask Us Anything is a service to PB readers who are seeking helpful information, not a forum to broadcast opinions or grievances. If you do have an issue that you want to ask about, no worries, just keep your complaints relevant and in the context of a question so that it can be addressed in a productive manner
• Use propping to acknowledge good (or not so good) questions and bump them up or down to where they belong

Other time zones:
•12 PM EST (New York)
• 5 PM GMT (London)
• 6 PM CET (Paris)
• 6 PM SAST (Cape Town)
• 2 AM AEST (Sydney, Australia)

How often do you break stuff on your bike?
  • 36 1
Not really often! I really learned over the years to find what lasts and what works best for me. I broke a lot over the years though, haha
  • 61 0
Yooooo whats upppp!!! Stoked to see so many good questions!
  • 1 0
Is Ride the Lightning your favorite NWD film or just your favorite rider introductions?
  • 4 5
You were robbed in the X Games. While all the other riders rode manicured lines during the best conditions, you rode rough unfinished lines in the worst with frozen dirt and snow. Watching that video excited me the same way watching Semenuk's first video. While he is smooth and calculated you are balls out aggressive while still being extremely technical. Not really a question but just letting you know that any time you shoot a video, it's the first I watch. I have never been disappointed and hope your body can last a long time.
  • 11 0
Im heading out digging a few hours and will come back answering more later! Cheers Smile
  • 50 5
Do you think you were robbed or do you think Semenuk deserved the win at the X-Games real mtb more?
  • 8 6
Oops sorry I didn’t mean to dislike… I wish they had a undo button. Brage def shoulda won tho
  • 106 0
For me it was a win just to be in the competition with legends I grew up watching and inspired me to where I am today, and be able to show what me and Blur Media are up to, on something so legendary like X-Games. Getting a silver medal and fan favorite was just a huge bonus.

How do you get any air on the bike? Must be really tough with them massive balls
  • 1 0
On the flip side, they actually stabilize him in the air
  • 37 1
Do you bathe in the blood of your enemies after you vanquish them or go straight for the pillaging?
  • 48 0
Its good to do a blood bath once in a while!
  • 22 0
How did your recovery for the injury you sustained at Rampage go? Are you still dealing with any effects from that and if so how are you coping with them? Also mentally can you describe what it's like pushing yourself again after coming back from an injury?
  • 22 0
I recovered pretty good! I think it helped to be out in the woods everyday hanging out watching the boys build. I was lucky to have a really good fysio that helped me alot, and as soon as I could start moving my shoulder, movement helped a lot. I'm trying to use every situation to something positive. An injury gives you a lot of time to think of new ideas and learn new things. I always think about riding and things I want to do, so when I'm finally back on the bike it doesn't feel like I have been away from it.

@bragevestavik: good to hear your recovery went well.

Fyi it’s spelt physio not fysio.
  • 27 0
 @louiefriesen: in norwegian its fysio
  • 14 1
@louiefriesen: FYI, spelt is a grain
  • 4 2
@louiefriesen: The whole world doesn't use the north american version of English, breh
  • 7 8
@mtb-jon: ok my bad then. At least in Canada and the US we spell it that way.
  • 23 0
Who's your biggest freeride role model?
  • 59 0
 Robbie Bourdon!
  • 9 0
 @bragevestavik: You’re a f*ckin legend just for saying that!!
  • 3 0
@bragevestavik: faakYeah! Master of the huge dumped 3.
  • 15 0
NÅ! DUDE! What do you want to see more of in the MTB community in the future?
  • 34 16
 Nakedness and buttplugs please
  • 6 0
Please make something similar to like zootspace but for mtb also watch all damn day and salute they are all skiing films but there is something in those films that I feel mt biking needs right now
  • 2 0
You know what I want to see? Out There 2! Smile
  • 25 0
NÅ! Whats uppp!! I would love to see people put a lot of time into creating something unique and new that pushes the sport forward! More edits in general! I want to see the mountain bike get pushed more, because it's a lot more capable than we think. Also people not take mountain biking too serious, it's about having a good time!
  • 1 0
@bragevestavik: thanks for the appreciation love ur guys content keep it coming strong
  • 1 0
@bragevestavik: sorry thought u were @BLURMEDIA but u should definately think about a project with them i would love to see content like 4bi9 or stept and zootspace type stuff for mtb
  • 14 1
Who / what influences the style of your edits? Reminds me of some of the more raw skateboard / BMX vids (but in the woods with rain / snow).
  • 17 0
I actually don't watch a lot of mountain biking. But the NWD Movies have inspired me from the beginning, and still do. Street skating, bmx, ski, music, art and snowboarding inspires me alot. One of the things that inspires me the most is being out in the woods with the crew: Blur Media and diggers.
  • 14 0
Mr. Vestavik: how do you build your freeride wheels? How long do they typically last you?

What’s your tire/insert setup?
  • 24 0
My wheels setup are DT Swiss FR1950 with Michelin DH 34 tires, Peaty's sealant and no inserts. They last for months!
  • 41 0
 @bragevestavik: months, lol Smile
  • 13 0
What do you think about the current state of DH Tandem racing? Do you think you'll ever get back to DH Tandem racing as it continues to grow?
  • 3 0
I need to know the answer to this.
  • 1 1
The what now? What rabbit hole are you? Where can I find more of this?
  • 1 0
@ChanceFuller: @bragevestavik will be along shortly to answer it.
  • 13 0
Is it true that when you crashed in Rampage, the crater you left behind was covered in molten glass?
  • 9 0
Is there a lot of crashing going on when you troubleshoot these lines? I am curious how much of your filming is on stuff you make first try vs. having to refine your approach, since so much of your riding is on high consequence, dramatic terrain. Cheers dude.
  • 12 0
Most of the sketchy lines are first try, if it's not too sketchy I will hit it a few times. Jibs tho can take a lot of tries and crashes. I really want it how I pictured in my head tho haha!
  • 2 0
@bragevestavik: Thank you. Best of luck dude! Your lines are creative and my son and I love to watch your edits.
  • 12 0
 Whats your go to chainsaw
  • 24 0
 Stihl!
  • 1 0
@bragevestavik: ha ha, come on over Brage!
  • 10 1
Where is you favorite place to ride? How great is it to have a family that is supportive and actively helps you achieve your goals, and dreams?
  • 20 0
My favorite place to ride is my hometown Mysen! I wouldn't be where I am today without the support of my mom and dad. They have never pushed me to anything, but always support my ways.
  • 1 0
@bragevestavik: er det verdt å dra til Mysen for å sykle sammenlignet med Nesbyen/Drammen osv, eller er du primært stoked for Mysen fordi det er din hjemby?
  • 7 0
What's your process to prepare for sending a gnarly feature for the first time? You've build some crazy sh!t, and the thought of 'just sending it' for the first time seems terrifying!
  • 19 0
For me I'm almost more afraid while building it or trying to sleep the days before, and when the day finally comes to hit it I'm actually really calm and it feels like I'm done with the scary part and ready to hit it.
  • 7 0
@bragevestavik, what is your advice to an up-and-coming freerider. I am 15 years old and want to persue a freeride mountain bike career. I am a huge fan of yours. Any words of wisdom? Cheers!!!
  • 2 1
Good luck bro! Probably just get out riding ever day Smile
  • 1 0
@ZanderShredsMtb: I try to. I am out at least 3 times a week. Hopefully more on freeride trails when I get my drivers license in January
  • 1 0
@noakeabean: sounds sick! I’m in like the exact same place as you, I’m 15 and free ride/ downhill mtb is my favorite thing to do. I’m also tryna get my drivers license to ride more trails more often
  • 2 0
@ZanderShredsMtb: So you know how it goes. Asking your parents to go all the time but it only rlly happens once or twice a month. I have a dirt jumper and some skateparks nearby which helps
  • 1 0
@noakeabean: yeah i do... I'm joining a mtb team so I can go out a lot more often and meet more people my age that are into the same types of riding
  • 1 0
@ZanderShredsMtb: Thats sick! The only team around here rides XC Frown
Don't rlly want to do that
  • 1 0
 @noakeabean: yeah I feel you.
  • 1 0
@noakeabean: also do you have an insta or something I can follow?
  • 1 0
@ZanderShredsMtb: Yep! @senditnoa. You have one?
  • 1 0
@noakeabean: I don’t really post much but yeah
  • 1 0
@noakeabean: I am in the same place as you are, except that I live in North Dakota where there are no freeride trails. I can only wait till I am old enough to move somewhere where there are bigger trails. also to both ZanderShredsMtb and noakeabean what bikes do you run, and with what components?
  • 1 1
@m40sniper: Check out my PB profile. 2017 DiamondBack Release. 2019 Pivot Phoenix. 2021 Transition PBJ. All pretty custom
  • 1 0
@m40sniper: ibis ripmo af with fox 36
  • 2 0
@ZanderShredsMtb: Joining a team brings you to a whole new level. They're super fun.
  • 1 0
@ZanderShredsMtb: What would be either of you guy's dream bikes?
  • 2 0
 @m40sniper: I really want a Santa Cruz 5010. Transition TR11. Commencal Absolute
  • 1 0
@noakeabean: I really like all of those bikes.
I would get a We are one Arrival or a Privateer 141. (with Intend suspension of course)
  • 1 0
@m40sniper: I would get one of those. I just want 27.5 bikes
  • 1 0
@noakeabean: I rly wanna try a mullet, because I love the agility of 27.5, but I love how 29 seems to roll faster and make going over obstacles easier
  • 2 0
@ZanderShredsMtb: I have a 27.5 kona right now and I really like how agile it is, but I want to get a 29er for the speed.
  • 1 0
@m40sniper: yeah they for sure feel faster
  • 19 1
Don't feel like you have to do what everyone else is doing, do what you really want to do, and what makes you stoked! Never forget that it is about having fun. Build some unique stuff that suits you and what you want to do! Can't wait to see what you get up to and maybe meet you on the trail one day!!! Shred on! Cheers! Smile
  • 2 0
@bragevestavik: Thank you so much!! I'm planning on a big urban freeride edit this summer. Thanks for the tips. You should come to proving grounds this fall. You can tow me in on some of the features
  • 1 0
@noakeabean: I’m looking forward to the edit!
  • 2 0
@ZanderShredsMtb: Keep an eye out! It'll probably come out early august. I'll post updates in instagram and on my youtube channel: Kanoakea MTB. Also, it'll be a mix of styles, mainly inspired by the Brage X-games edit. It will also have a mix of Dylan Starks "Real Heat" and Fabio Wibmers "Urban Freeride Lives."
  • 2 0
Yoooo! I'm there too! I'm 16 (but can't get my license for another few months thanks new york!) I work at a bike shop and mainly race enduro, I'm planning on racing a full rocky mountain enduro next season then at least a partial ews after that. It's cool to see others out there with the same ambitions! A bad day on a bike beats a good day in school!
  • 1 0
@noakeabean: XC teams arnt all that bad. As someone who rides enduro/trail I still joined a team this year as a freshman. Although like 75% of people were talking about watts and all that other stuff I found some other people who like to send and now we're trying to make an enduro team.
  • 1 0
@Lvanamson: I kinda agree. If you cant go ride what you want XC is at least fun as a group and it builds fitness.
  • 1 1
@LukeDeGriselles: Yeah a driver's license will rock your riding world. It's so nice to be able to just ride anywhere
  • 9 0
 Do you like pickled herring?
  • 2 0

  • 8 0

  • 11 0

  • 8 0
 Skating, Bmx, Snowboard and Ski!!
  • 7 0
How much do you weight and how that can influence your riding style and technic? Huge respect for you. Thank you
  • 10 0
I weight 95 kg and Im not really sure how it influence my riding style haha! Just shred how you are! Cheers!! Smile
  • 5 0
You've ridden some of the best courses in the world, as well as created some of the gnarliest and most natural tracks yourself... But what location have you dreamed of visiting?
  • 19 0
 Kamloops and New Zealand!
  • 3 0
@bragevestavik: hit me up if you ever make it to Kamloops and we’ll show you the goods!
  • 3 0
@bragevestavik: slab of beer with your name in it waiting here bro
  • 8 0
 Shuttle or climb?
  • 15 0
In Mysen its all about hiking up!
  • 4 1
So many people look up to your skill, and your free riding abilities. So I ask, how would you go about to make a name for yourself, to set yourself apart from others, and be the best you can. How does your advice differ from your path, if at applicable?
  • 5 0
What spring rate do you run? As a bigger guy absolutely sending it, do you need to get custom ones done?

Standard springs seem to max out at super low weight.
  • 5 0
Im currently on a air shock, stacked with volume tolkens and 350psi!
  • 1 0
 @bragevestavik: 350psi!!! Jessssus
  • 8 0
 Favourite metal band?

@bragevestavik: OH HELLS YES! I listen to the first 3 songs on Filosfem nearly every day.
  • 2 0
 @bragevestavik: Amazing! Thank you!
  • 4 1
Obviously you and the boys like your hip hop, given your edits, but do you listen to any metal? Being from Norway I can only imagine that you've been around plenty of Black Metal. Any favorite bands?
  • 6 0
I'd love to see an Immortal-style video edit with Brage and the crew running around in between trees in corpse paint brandishing trail-building implements
  • 2 0
 Check out satyricon lol
  • 3 0
Yesss! I listen to alot of Black Metal! Darkthrone, Burzum, Faidra, Mayhem!
  • 1 0
@DHsender4life: Yup Satyricon is dope! Love The Shadowthrone album!
  • 1 0
@bragevestavik: nice ill check those bands out for sure . black crow on a tombstone by satyricon is a classic . i saw them live years ago opening for cradle of filth. hhaha what a crazy crowd.
  • 1 0
@bragevestavik: hey man next time you're in whistler i invite you to ride a trail i built called diesel wolf. one of the steepest moss rock trails in BC. would be cool to see a video of you riding it. if you need directions send me message . peace .
  • 6 0
Is 27.5 dead? What about 26?
  • 2 0
When will we see you on one of Isak Leivsson's DIY freeride machines? They're basically Viking longships, but made of steel and probably don't float.
Isak has already proven his frames survive roof drops to flat....
  • 4 0
 Isak is the man!!
  • 3 0
I don't have a question, I just wanted to say that the commercial for the GT Force Carbon is a super sick edit and that I'm really stoked for "Out There 2". Cheers!
  • 2 0
Thank you!! Really appreciate it! Smile
  • 1 0
Hey B-rage, This is probably going to get buried, but I just wanted to say we both got the hookup at Red Bull around the same time. I took a job with them and then I saw you got sponsored! Hoping I can meet you at one the events some day
  • 4 0
 Do u run 800mm handlebars?
  • 1 0
 780mm on my downhill bike!
  • 3 0
Who's answering these questions for Brage? Moi Moi or the Viking? Are there Aussie Vikings out there?
  • 5 2
How did you go about gaining sponsors? How much did social media have an effect gaining exposure?
  • 3 1
What wheels do you use, and how long do they hold up for? Also, what’s the key to making a good freeride jump/drop/berm line?
  • 2 0
Im using DT Swiss FR1950 and they hold up for months!! I love finding natural terrain and different unique things like cool trees or rocks! Just be creative!
  • 3 0
When did you realize you wanted to pursue Freeride instead of DH and what finally pushed you to make the switch?
  • 6 0
NWD was what got me into biking, so Freeride and building has always been the sickest to me. The scene in Norway changed and I ended up racing for years, but I have always been into the building and filming. The level of racing is so high that you really need to put a lot of time into it, so I chose what I thought was most fun, and to be honest I couldn't afford racing anymore at the time. Me and Blur Media started working on our first project Out There when I was still racing, and that really put a spark to it. I have always been really creative and love the freedom to create what I want. But I'm still stoked on those racing years, they teached me alot and has a lot to say in my riding.

How do you sit down with such obvious scrotal elephantiasis?
  • 2 0
@bragevestavik how do you get the drive to ride? ive recently lost all jump confidence, and want some tips on how to conquer fear.
  • 2 0
What's good advice for Freeride Groms and Parents out there? Your Dad seems like an awesome/wild dude...wondering what he did right/wrong in your biking journey?
  • 3 0
what size is your Fury Smile ?? and wheel?
  • 3 0
My GT Fury is size L and wheels are currently 27.5. DT Swiss FR1950
  • 2 1
Are there a rough set of measurements (height & distance) that you use when building a drop and landing, and if so, what is your ideal?
  • 3 0
Nope, I think I have never measured something I have built. I love using natural terrain!
  • 3 0
 @bragevestavik What's your favorite beer?
  • 1 0
How important is it to own a dirt jump bike? Did it help your technique a lot? I have mainly ridden XC and enduro only but the more I go to parks the more I like it
  • 2 0
I cant wait to hear his approach on how raw and exposed the lines he rides are. Brage is an animal.
  • 2 2
Why the 58 and not a 40? I assume it's a sponsorship thing. Personally I love the newer Zocchis, had a lot of older ones too. Love the riding (& especially the great trail building) you've been showcasing!
  • 5 0
Fox switched to marzocchi for all of their freeriders and slopestyle riders and kept fox strictly for their riders that race.
  • 6 0
I have never been really focused on a lot of settings, and the Marzocchi is just super easy to work with! I can’t get lost in high speed or low speed haha! I have also been a fan of Marzocchi since I first watched the NWD movies so it's really cool to finally ride for them!
Thank you!! Smile
  • 2 1
Brage, with some of your very progressive minded stunts being thought up, built and ridden, would you consider being a trail designer for a major mountain or collaborative?
  • 3 0
Yes, I have thought about this for sure and it is something I'm keen to look into in the future maybe. I do some work at Trysil Bike Arena, and built a trail there called B-Rage in 2020.
  • 2 0
What's the riding like in Norway, especially in relation to the climate where you live?
  • 4 0
 steep tech or Big hits?
  • 3 0
 A mix of both!!
  • 1 1
 Your riding is exceptional.
Are you going to share any of your MEAD with the rest of us so we can join you on your conquest of new age Freeriding and flat out Savage features?
  • 3 0
How do you grow such a fine beard?
  • 2 1
I can’t imagine there’s much riding in Norway in the winter. What do you do with that time? A few trips away? Any other sports?
  • 2 1
Another question asked about breaking parts, and you said you don't break parts all that often. How do you not routinely break wheels with the kind of stuff that you do?
  • 1 0
Any thoughts on preparing yourself for progression in your riding, working up to sending larger and larger stunts, ie mental, physical?
  • 1 0
How do you mentally prepare for such massive sends? Do massive crashes ever scare you to send it again? Would you send the same rampage drop next year?!
  • 1 1
What's it going to take for you to make it out to Proving Grounds this year in Prineville/Bend, Oregon?! TMac/Kyle Jamison etc have an insanely fun event there in the month or so before Rampage.
  • 3 0
do the video drones bother you at rampage or anywhere else?
  • 3 1
Are you a spiritual or religious man? Does hucking off of 50 foot drops make you religious? @bragevestavik
  • 2 2
U talked to Larry on Friday that was 22 years ago from this coming Friday? When you last rode Squamish on the old video from them, Freddy had his hair cut like your cousin Tom, did you see the movie Batman yet?
  • 2 1
Concussions are a hot topic right now. Have you had any? How do you approach them? Is there less pressure in freeride to perform if a concussion is recognized?
  • 4 0
 Precision or Jazz?
  • 3 0
Is Brage a Bass player. I like him even more now. Precision
  • 1 0
What’s the scariest feature and or event you have ever attempted/competed in?

Have you ever built any feature you decided not to hit?
  • 1 0
Hey Brage, How do you prepare mentally to send huge jumps or drops? Is it a case of just sending it or do you take your time to carefully calculate your approach? Cheers!
  • 1 0
Brage, do you have a bmx background? Also, how did you get into riding bikes and where do you get your inspiration for your unique riding style? Thanks, Tim
  • 2 0
