Watch the first one, thought it was great. a show with a bit of charisma. the on screen analysis from Emily and Elliot is a good touch, it’s what I was expecting from the GCN coverage… but no. Glad Redbull know what the viewers want to see.

Gcn, gmbn are pathetic excuses for media. Their YouTube channel sucks ass
  • 12 1
Yeah, I thought we'd see some analysis from GMBN on the Racing News show......

this is so nice to Discover! Pun Intended
  • 54 4
Discovery/GCN really should be embarrassed at what they're putting out, even more so for the fact that they're charging people for it. Red Bull have shown them, and the viewers, what we should be getting!

@northernwig: This was my comment basically.

I just realised Rob, Elliot and Emily are prescription-strength antidepressants. I feel alive!!!!!
  • 1 0
Yeah, I agree. Brings back some depth and character that we've been missing since RedBull's exit.
  • 2 0
@northernwig: Agreed! The commentators on GCN are so dull (XCO). I use to not miss a race, watching women and men back to back. Now I find myself watching a race a week after the fact, sometimes only the women or men. The first 30 mins of the XCO coverage is absolute rubbish. Could GCN not figure out how to fast forward with a preview as you scroll?
  • 1 0
 @dmon: YESSSSSSS!! This!!
  • 1 0
@mrkkbb: "Could GCN not figure out how to fast forward with a preview as you scroll?" - This! Veeery annoying, indeed. I can't think of another player/streaming platform these days, that doesn't allow for real-time preview as you fast forward or rewind.
As for the quality of the commentary (and I'm mostly addressing XCO here, as that's what I watch), pre- and during races, as much as it leaves much to be desired - from Kate Mason's obvious lack of any cycling background and often awkward on-screen manner and how she treats the racers they had just interviewed, pretty much shooing them away when the interview is done (see Jenny Rissveds a couple races ago or even Nino last time), through Josh's mid-race "informative" interludes/segments that I guess are thought to add to the experience, but are a distraction and may cause the broadcast to miss something important instead, to the recent Euro Champs with just bad commentary (where one of the commentators suggested that since racers where forced to run up a steep, slick/muddy section every lap, maybe it would've been more beneficial for them to wear something other than stiff carbon shoes) - I think many here were prepared for far worse, when the change of guard from Red Bull was first announced. Everybody was predicting doom and gloom and pretty much the death of racing. At least we still have Bart's voice that we all got used to. And coverage itself is not that bad, either. While they still miss some stuff due to cameras not being there (so did Red Bull before), I think drones add a very cool, new perspective.

Does this mean i can mute GNC and have a live overlay of Rob and Eliot commenting the race?
  • 36 2
Oh man that's brilliant, just give me a radio feed w/Rob/Eliot/Tracey and I'll live happily ever after. It's been a shame seeing first time winners (Williams, Kolb, Jackson) and big comebacks (Rachel) without Rob's commentary, without the iconic "look at the time" or the emotion of having followed these racers his entire life.

Beyond what's is special about these calls in the moment is how special they are in replay. Replays of this year's winning runs lack the magic and energy that are so apparent in Finn's win at Mont St. Anne, Bruni's win in France, Camille exploding onto the scene a few years ago, same with Amaury.
  • 51 5
Joe Rogan does live podcasts during select ufc events in which he doesn't commentate. They are called fight companion. Rob, Elliot and Emily should do something similar.
We could all mute the live feed and get live commentary through the live podcast. Imagine that??
  • 3 1
Even though I wish it did, I don’t think that would work. Different ways of broadcasting, especially streaming, come with a significant time delay. Up to multiple seconds. Don‘t think a separate audio broadcast could ever be in sync enough to make it a reasonable replacement for a live comment.

Only difference is that Joe Rogan is a blowhard douchenozzle, and anyone who listens to him is also, and is in need of an immediate trephination with a rusty spoon.

 @nathanrob: when was that?
  • 24 4
Jesus, the amount of misconceptions founded entirely on rumours and hearsay in this thread is laughable. Ironically enough it's a perfect example of why people should actually listen to people with opinions that differ from theirs before forming conclusions about those people.

Just a couple of fyi's:
@adminofthegapers I tend to agree with most (but not all) of the things you have said here. I'm also left wing as f*ck. And I'm of the opinion that tribalism, partisan politics and culture wars are for people that need to be told what to think by their chosen team. You seem open minded enough to see past all that shit. So I'm dismayed by your comment about leftists. Aside from that though, I reckon we'd probably be able to have a beer together without getting all lairy about anything. (or dying of covid, funnily enough...)
@skywalkdontrun Your tendency to fall back on uninformed ad-hominems doesn't make you look smart. Quite the opposite infact. Go read a few books and stop just spouting the same tired old shit as all the mindless partisan f*cks on twitter.
@nathanrob I like your input, but I disagree with you wholesale. I grew up in the south of the USA and my secondary school was probably 30% mexican 30% african american and 40% caucasian. I'm not gonna say my best friend is black, but I am gonna say well over half my friends werent white while I was growing up. I used the n word all the time, and guess what, that doesn't magically make me a racist. Hating people you have never met based on preconcieved ideas about their background is what makes you racist. I try not to do that. I still do use the n-word occasionally. Not in public, cos I'm aware it offends some people, but I still use it. And guess what, I aint even the tiniest bit racist.
I like joe rogans podcast. I don't agree with all of the stuff I hear on it, but I also hear some really interesting things on it. I don't even agree with all the really interesting things, but I have this apparently magic and very dangerous power where I can still find an idea I disagree with interesting. More people should try it. You might find a few of your opinions being tested in ways you didnt think of before.
  • 16 6
@gabiusmaximus: lean left too, especially on war, social policies, etc…but the last few years have totally turned me off to the left, they’re like the Christian conservatives from the 2000’s, anti free speech and humor, plus they’re pushing for the war in Ukraine which isn’t go to end well for anyone
  • 7 2
@adminofthegapers: I can't argue with that to be fair. But I tend to see it as the "idea of being leftist" being used to push those social movements, rather than the actual majority of left wing people. Similarly I tended to see the "Idea of christian conservatives" being used to push all the weird right wing shit that was being pushed in that era. Most of the conservative religious people I have met are nice old ladies who sit in their garden growing vegetables and knitting. It's a few dumb extremists that give all these groups a bad name. But yeah, the left does seem to be producing more dumb extremists these days, sadly.

@nathanrob: I can tell you don't actually listen to Joe Rogan and you got your opinion about him from liberal media outlets who like to tell you how to think. Joe's absolutely not racist and platforms so many different people on both sides of the political spectrum, he platforms genuine scientists and also platforms nutcases who believe science is trying to withhold information. He platforms literally thousands of people and lets them have their say.

I've turned off a shit load of his podcasts where he's got some absolute moron on who's got no idea about what their talking about. I've turned off heaps of his political shit too, I'm not a fan. I've also listened to hundreds of really interesting podcasts with experts in interesting niche fields talking about things that interest me, and Joe asks very good questions to them which can get them explaining things to normal people who otherwise wouldn't understand what they're on about. He's a true artist at conversation like that.

Guess what, the media don't want you to think critically about anything at all so they do not want you to listen to Joe Rogan's podcast because it gives you an opportunity to think about a subject in depth instead of just what you're being told in soundbites that want to force something on you.

I think I have heard him say the N word in the past, but it isn't in a racist context or directed at anyone. It's in the context of expression. I don't care if someone uses the N word either, because I've not been brainwashed to think it's the absolute worst thing in the world and someone needs to be canceled for it.

@gooral: @skywalkdontrun: I should of directed this at you wombles but never mind. Keep drinking the Media coolaid, atleast it makes you feel better.
  • 4 1
@skywalkdontrun: Yet again you show you have nothing meaningful to add. It must be a difficult life injecting vapid nonsense into other peoples conversations and hoping to receive some validation from strangers you will never meet. I'd suggest thinking a little longer about your inputs and trying to make them more relevant and interesting, you might find you have better luck. The Youtube comments section style shit slinging is an effective way to draw an initial response, but you will find it doesn't have legs in terms of creating actual meaningful conversation. Keep practicing though my man, we're all getting better every day. Xx

@skywalkdontrun: @skywalkdontrun: I'm pretty sure he was alluding to the Covid vaccines, which if not fraudulent would likely still be available for use. However, they are not according to the CDCs website:

"As of April 18, 2023, the original Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are no longer authorized for use by the FDA in the United States."

I'll never understand how a group of people can't possibly fathom the idea of a person not wanting to put a non-approved, never before used (type of technology) vaccine into their bodies to protect against a virus with a 99% recovery rate for individuals 18-45 years of age.

  • 1 0
@Narro2: I hope not, I really like Checo. Part of me wants Ric to end up at Audi but I’m not yet convinced they are going to be a full on team.
  • 1 0
@somebody-else: I like Checo and Dani. I think it might be them playing games to put pressure on Checo, which seems like a bad way to get performance out of a driver.
I am not sure if de Vries had some personal issue with the Red bull guys or if he is a pawn for the main Redbull team, but it all feels odd since his performance wasn't so much worse than Tsunnoda...
  • 1 0
@TopherJones93: it is only gonna get worse for Checo, I live in Mexico and the expectation is for him to be champion, Grupo Carso (Checo's actual boss) are pushing him to be champion. Imo Checo was at his best for Redbull and for himself at Imola last year, when he was ok being second but also faster than Charles. Him trying to be champion is gonna get him nowhere.
  • 1 0
@TopherJones93: something behind the scenes had to be going on with de Vries, like you said he was mostly competitive with Tsunoda. Red Bull and Christian Horner especially, don’t have the faintest idea how to get the maximum performance out of a driver.
  • 2 0
@Narro2: champion seems like a far reach when you cant get to Q2. He has had some amazing drives, like Imola, but he is going up against an incredibly talented driver who has had the car designed around his preferences. It is a nearly impossible uphill battle to be champion...

@somebody-else: RedBull would rather let some other company do the nurturing growth and then they can pick the good drivers later and play head games to threaten their drivers to perform, like they did with Albon and Gasley. Very bad management, especially from Horner.
  • 1 0
@TopherJones93: Team principals are playing 3D chees behind the scenes, thats where the real competition is, i never understood why DeVries was picked for AT, he was a fish out of water since the beginning, puting my tinfoil hat on i could even bet that Redbull opted to hire a driver so highly regarded by Toto just to kick him out the back door after 10 races in order to discredit Toto.

It is all mental games, the last lap 1 pointer by Max in the last race that is very demoralizing for the other 19 drivers and their teams. If the rumor is true and RB bring a Zero Sidepod concept that works, it is the end for Mercedes AMG Petronas, they will rage quit probably.
  • 1 0
@Narro2: nah, Toto pumped him up to get Red Bull to make a stupid decision. It worked.

Of course they are wasting money on Mick…

They all make stupid emotional decisions at times.

  • 15 3
I almost cried. As I said above, we're missing more than just great commentary in the moment, we're missing it in the replays, too. Huge moments are not going to live on in the same way when the commentary cannot recognize the moment properly and place it in the greater context of the sport. Not to mention the lack of authentic energy. Great commentators in other sports are literally kept around until they become demented, they make the sport what it is in the public eye.

This is great to see and obviously Red Bull was paying attention to the comments on the new GCN stream. To the people defending the GCN stream, it isn't that it's awful, it's that we were promised improvement. I certainly haven't seen an improvement in production quality and when it comes to pre/post race, interviews and commentary we've seen the opposite. The frustrating part is now having to pay for something but getting nothing more for it and at times getting less. If it was still free, I'd be far more understanding.
  • 1 0
While I mostly agree (about lack of marked overall improvement given that it's a paid thing now), to be fair there are some positive changes/additions now - like a much longer post-race coverage, including actual podium ceremonies, which we never had before. And more interviews with racers before and podium's top three afterwards.

Cedric started out as a hybrid Rob/Claudio mix. He sounded like Claudio but acted like Rob...he even used a couple of Rob's tag lines..."will you look at the time" and "wow wow wow". Over the last two races he has calmed down to a point that the commentary is tough to listen to.

Finally got a chance to watch it last night. Great show, they really work well together. Emily seemed like she had been doing it for years and will even get better. Elliot and Rob picked up right where they left off. Seemed very relaxed and loosely structured, they had a plan of what they were going to talk about and transitioned pretty well between segments without it being too structured.

It's ESPN for dh...except Disney owns ESPN so forget my statement.
  • 5 2
How does he sit down with shows that big! DH commentary just not the same without Rob.

One step ahead of the “Can’t even afford an HD drone” even though it’s no longer free coverage WB/ Discovery.

you're joking right? Elliot giggling his way through again, Emily with a painful interview with Nino. Thankfully Rob held it together

All hail the egg, they are just at the opposite end of the spectrum compared to Ric & Ced. Just like friends hanging out on the sofa and know every detail, rather that looking at notes prepared for them as GCN do…

Miss the so much, won’t be the same without em.

like they haven't had weeks to prep this? You think this is off the cuff? You think that Rob didn't have weeks of prep when he was commentating? All commentators have reams of facts to pull out to fill the space - in every sport. Most of this is scripted and all the lead-ins Rob does will be auto-cue.

The skill in live commentary is to mix the facts with the live action - and that is where Ric and co are missing: too much facts, buzz phrases and not enough of the now.

@tanadog: yeah they've been planning this for a year or so, they only have enough content for one episode every few races. We might get another after Hardline and worlds then maybe another after Loudenvielle and then another after the WC final.

Did someone say Rob Warner and Elliot?
  • 1 0
I truly enjoyed this show and I'm keen for more! Rob Warner is to the mountainbike world what Morgan Freeman is to cinema.

Lots of people dine out on covering sports they don't broadcast. More is more in this case.
  • 2 1
 Yessssss!!!!! Finally something watchable......
  • 2 1
Great content but is Warner doing the studio camera angles himself?
  • 2 1
Pretty chezey indeed. I was surprised at first, all those glamor shots of Batty had me thinking I was on the wrong stream.
  • 2 4
@flaflow: She is only there for the glamor angle, thats why they sponsored her
