Calling in Well and it's benefits! Calling in Well and it's benefits!
Friday was a day meant for travel as I hit the road for the next 10 days. After a great breakfast in Kamloops it was time to make my way east to the next BC Cup DH race in Invermere BC, along the way I decided I'd side track myself with a few hours at Silver Star in Vernon. Without any attempt to sway my best friend out of work and to join me, he looked up from his breakfast and stated "I'll be an hour behind, but I need to take a self improvement day and biking is the best reason I can think of!"

A hardworking trail crew has created a NEW COURSE for Horseshoe that will be like nothing else seen on the O-Cup circuit, steep chutes, off camber, high speed wide wood sections, multiple lines, drops, jumps and of course the Snake pit. Intermontane Challenge-World Class Kamloops Mounta Intermontane Challenge-World Class Kamloops Mountain Bike Race announces World Class Race Package
The Intermontane Challenge, one of the world’s most unique and lucrative mountain bike races, has announced Thompson Rivers University (TRU) will be the core of its food and accommodation program for the 2009 race. The race package will set a new standard in quality, comfort and value in mountain bike racing.

The inaugural 450-kilometre race takes place in Kamloops July 27-31, 2009 and is the only race of its size in the world to feature a single-track, clover leaf design. The distinctive design allows racers to tackle a different part of the course each day while establishing a home base in Kamloops every night. Because of this, TRU has made its apartment-style condo-like residences available for competitors. In addition, the university’s culinary department will be lending their expertise to provide food for racers.

We’ve been out practicing every day, and my lines have changed multiple times. Well summer is here and as the temperature starts to heat up so does the race season. The Arduum Challenge was held this past weekend and the challenge was to get down the course without damage to bike or body. On Saturday I heard the count on toasted wheels was up to twenty and there was more added to that list on Sunday. I know at least one frame got broken and I did see a couple of people in slings. The good part is that if you talk to any of those people I bet every one of them will tell you they had a great time on and off the race track and are already planning their returns for next season.

Source: Kathy Sessler

Santa Cruz Syndicate’s Josh Bryceland brings home the gold at the UCI World Championship Junior Downhill race today at Val Di Sole. Steve Peat is the bridesmaid once again placing second in the elite men’s downhill to Gee Atherton’s first place run. Gee was the man to beat all week and this race was his to lose, and he pulled through with a run as stellar as his practice had been all week. Sam Hill was on a winning time, over 6 seconds faster at the second split time and gaining speed on the last section when he slid out and crashed in the second to last corner throwing away the win. His time was still good enough for a bronze medal. Greg Minnaar followed them all in for a fourth place finish.

Source: Kathy Sessler

The downhill seeding race for the UCI World Championship Downhill took place today in Val Di Sole, Italy under blue skies, which is typical of this region, but it didn’t seem that way early in the week with light rain showers wetting the track. Racers played it easy and some played tactics in the seeding run as all riders are qualified and no points are given for the seeding run, so not much was on the line. Santa Cruz Syndicate’s Greg Minnaar placed second in the elite men’s category and said, “I battled to find a rhythm, but it’s still early now and we have training tomorrow and Saturday. I should be able to find my rhythm then and give it some stick in the final,” said Minnaar.

Mountain biking can be a tough sport for female riders to break into. We talk about progression, riding, coaching, and how things are changing for female riders.

Nicky is like many female riders - she got into mountain biking through her husband. However, in three seasons, she's gone from a timid noob who hadn't ridden a bike for twenty years to a confident intermediate rider. She knows what terrain she likes to ride, and now has that passion for mountain biking we can all relate to. Weekends are planned well in advance - who to ride with, and where. There's no time for long lazy days at the spa, a makeover, or shopping. It's all about riding the dirt, rock and gnar.

Yes it is true, our own Danice Uyesugi will be one of the Elite Women racers representing Canada in 2 weeks time at the World Championships in Italy. With a second and a first place finish at the first two rounds of the Canada Cup series it’s put her into the overall points lead and on a plane to Italy. This is Danice’s first year as a pro and only her second season racing, so we and all her sponsors are very excited for her.

Danice stopped by on Saturday to ride some trails and I shot some pics of her in action.
