Pinkbike Poll: Winter Ways

Oct 23, 2015 at 3:28
by Paul Aston
Inspired by Mike Kazimer's Spinning Circles blog last week about Seasons Change, I started thinking about the forthcoming winter. The nights draw in and a huge chunk of the Northern Hemisphere gets cold and wet, and tends to stay like that for much longer than I would like. Late evenings at the dirt jumps are out, as well as procrastinating all day in the knowledge that you can still pound the pedals for a few hours after dinner before the night falls.

There seem to be a few different camps when it comes to winter ways:

Some people revel in the darkness as they don the winter warmers and lights, just getting on with the grind as normal after work and at the weekends, maybe even switching to a fat bike in colder climates.

Others take the time to get off the bike and indulge in some different activities like indoor climbing, hitting the gym, yoga or a blast on the moto's at the weekend to change things up. Also popular with the two-wheeled crowd is changing the contact points to sharp edge instead of blunt rubber and heading out into the snow on ski's or snowboards.

Some eccentrics do weird things like actually spending time with loved ones, going to the cinema, repainting the lounge and hitting Ikea when the crowds die down for the fabled 8-10pm empty aisle sessions.
Some random photos from the bouldering hall in Sundsvall that I training in during the winter Photographer Rickard Croy Media

But as we plunge into winter, half of the globe is heading into summer. Maybe you're thinking about migrating, or already live there?

What will you do this winter?

Only thing that will stop me cycling is heavy rain. Other than that its bring on the mud, snow and sub zero temps, and the lights are fully charged!!

"COME BACK SUMMER....PLEASE"
  • 67 3
Haha!! "Bring on the snow and sub zero temps" says the guy not living in Canada.

I'll still be commuting daily until it starts snowing. As for mtb, there might be a couple good days left in eastern Canada but i think its pretty much done for the season.
  • 36 0
rain isn't the problem, its the wind that puts me off...
  • 16 1
Agreed, wind sucks, unless it comes from your bum, then it's awesome!

Will be playing squash and a bit of running too. But getting a new bike to make winter better.

On the Canada note, snow here is a luxury and is so much fun (until you have two foot of it) which is where a lift pass and fat bike wokld be cool as!!! :-)

Ride on peeps, wherever, however you need to, just keep pedalling!!!
  • 7 1
No change beteween summer and winter really here in england, so ill just keep riding until the annual pilgramage to canada to snowboard!!
  • 11 0
@cunning-linguist Snow here doesn't get fun UNTIL you have two feet of it!

:-D

 Summer suck
  • 8 4
In Southern California there is no winter... Making this poll useless
  • 1 0
I agree.. Only bad weather is wind! www.pinkbike.com/photo/9372230
  • 6 0
Santa Cruz is always perfect in the winter, the dry trails get packed down by rain and all the trees prevent any wind
  • 7 0
 Winter is build season
  • 1 0
No idea where you live Dmrbikes85211 but "No change beteween summer and winter really here in England" ...? Really? - Thats crazy talk... ;-)

This past summer we've barely had any wet rides, its been dry, and even dusty at times. But its already getting wet and dark now so the lights are charged, the mud guard is on and the jacket is packed. Its demo more hassle, but can still be awesome fun. Night rides are great too.

I hate these polls where you want more than one choice. I'll be biking, just biking a little less and doing some skiing. Beautiful British Columbia!!!!
  • 2 0
The low organic material content in our soils means that the dirt turns into an ungodly sticky mud that makes riding unbearable in shoulder seasons. So, in winters in northern Utah, we pray for snow.
  • 48 2
Am I the only one who actually likes a break from my bike. Over the winter my bike gets some much needed tlc, and get some skiing in. I do occasionally get out there ,but I feel if I have a winter off my stoke level is through the roof when spring rolls around.
  • 17 3
 I think you are Smile
  • 6 1
Sure aren't my friend, can't wait to get out on snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 5 0
I'm just like you. I get on the bike each month or so to keep some muscle memory alive but otherwise my free time goes to skiing. The year is cyclical in this way and it's a healthy thing for me, stoke and focus wise.
  • 10 0
Thats the beauty of the seasons. Winter sports don't have to compete with biking, you can have both! Skiing down a huge bowl with fresh tracks in Utah powder is every bit as satisfying as smooth, fast, tacky beautiful singletrack in the summer.
  • 2 0
I love Ikea... it's my happy place... shame the missus doesn't share my enthusiasm...
  • 2 0
No, you're not the only one. I generally take a break come Dec. 1 and won't hit the trails until March or April. In the meantime, it's ski season.
  • 3 0
@brandaneisma nah you are not alone! I've been skiing far longer than I've been riding bike! I have to admit that I sometimes miss riding during the winter.

If I was riding all year long, it might not be the same though. but yeah my stoke level is also through the roof when I get to ride again XD
  • 2 0
@Coolwinner05 Right!! there is nothing like that first ride on your bike in the spring, or your first bike park day in the spring.
  • 2 0
 ok i stand corrected Smile
  • 2 0
Same. Ill ride until the mountain opens, then ill ride my snowboard till spring when I take the bike out again.
  • 1 0
And look at KC Deane, skiing/ snowboarding and MTB don't have to compete with each other, you can even be pro in both.
  • 1 0
 Agreed.
  • 41 0
I carry on riding, just slower and more sideways.... and generally into things
  • 6 0
Me. Ride a little less. Pinkbike a little more.
  • 33 1
 Socal winters are terrific
  • 12 0
best time of the year for riding. Perfectly moderate temperatures, and a decent amount of rain!
  • 6 1
Can't wait for the rain. Trails are so gravely or dusty. We need some tack.
  • 7 0
Winter in Socal is the best. The weather is cool and the dirt is awesome. The waves are firing and the clearing winds are blowing making it killer for surf / kitesurfing. Of course it's also Moto season, snowboard season and snow kite season. Even the lakes are clear of wallys and great for wakeboarding. My major issue is deciding on what sport to do in the winter.
  • 7 0
I'd love it even more if we had a year round lift access bike park.
  • 8 1
if big bear didn't fake their snow and just let us shred...
  • 1 0
Is big bears new park pretty good? My brother in law sure seems to like it
  • 5 0
It sucks that there's no what's this winter thing you're talking about option for us who live in socal.
  • 1 0
Big bear is a good alternative to hiking for an hour. Nothing compared to mammoth. And mammoth is nothing compared to whistler from what I've heard
  • 3 0
Kinda sick of the dust here in Norcal too.
  • 1 0
 tack is for pussies.
  • 2 0
I know, that why we live in San diego and can still ride hard, but you have to admit it's fun as shit to finally be able to have serious traction
  • 1 0
Pittsburgh winter = ice, freezing rain, road salt, dreary skies, terrible "snow" at the bush-league ski resort, and a bunch of mountain bikers going hypothermic on their fatbikes, trying to convince themselves how tough and awesome they are for riding in this crap. So Cal winter = what should I do today? Surf, ride, or go snowboarding in a tee shirt at Bear? Cookout? Why not? If that's not worth paying $400 more per month in rent, I don't know what is.
  • 3 0
@martis You forgot the women in yoga pants.
  • 3 0
And the ladies tend to look a lot better in those yoga pants in CA...
  • 1 0
 Amen to that.
  • 22 0
I live in the North-west of Scotland, I ride in Winter all year round...
  • 16 1
Ah, NW scotland.. where the only way you can tell it's winter is when the rain gets colder
  • 15 1
Skitouring with my fat powderguns! Nothing better!
  • 2 0
Ya! im building myself up a ski touring setup too!
  • 2 0
That's what I'm screaming. Skitouring = winter mountain biking.
  • 2 0
This is actually why I started mountain biking!
  • 10 1
I have to ride at night during weekdays, that's my only problem with winter. Not a deal breaker now that I have lights. I also find cold easier to deal with than heat.
  • 3 0
Same here. Riding with 33, 36º sucks!!
  • 2 1
Maybe because the weather is similar in our countries... However, you have good waves year round, so if I lived there I probably wouldn't even own a bike.
  • 7 0
 That's what you think. :-D
I was born 20 km away from the beach, spend the summer at the beach, see cars and vans all year round loaded with surf boards from all over europe and still I don't care much about it. But I bet that if I was born in Austria or Switzerland I would dream all day about the sea and surf. You always end up wanting what you don't have. : -)
I spend my time dreaming about that week in the Alps.
  • 1 0
@migkab you should come over for that week in the Alps you won't regret it! But I do warn you that you may not want to return , that is what happened to me!
  • 1 0
I have been there already (4 times actually). That's why I dream about it all year :-D. In 2016 I will go again.
Where are you living, maybe we can meet next year at Morzine?
  • 1 0
@migkab I live and work in Chatel (I'm one of the bikepark shapers). If you come over next year let me know and I'll show you around. Have you ridden the Chatel bikepark? How about Morgins? And if you are really good I'll show you some secret trails hehe Wink
  • 1 0
I have been at PDS in 2013 but in the beggining of the season so only Les Gets and Morzine were open. Next year I am planning to go to PDS again.
I will remember what you said :-D !!
  • 1 0
@migkab Chatel opens everyday from the end of June and before than it is open for two weekends in June depending on the snow conditions. So you haven't been to best part of the PDS yet! Jumps and flow lines in Chatel and beautiful DH trails in Morgins. And then there is Champery with the legendary World Cup track...
  • 10 0
Option 6: Just got surgery and won't be able to ride, regardless of what the weather looks like outside...

It's a good reason to visit Brazil!
It's rideable all year aroun and 1USD = 4 REAIS (Brazilian currency).
Tons of enduro riding

I live in Portugal, the weather is mild and we ride all year. In fact I ride less in the summer, too hot sometimes :-D

El invierno es temporada alta para los peninsulares Smile
  • 4 1
Must be nice not to have 6-8 months of winter every year.
Studded tires and long as they grip!
Till it hit -20 C.
Out in the snow till it hits more than 5 foot.
This is the way of Northern Central Canada. from October till May/June.
  • 2 2
Look me up for DIY studded tubeless recipe, it will open your eyes!!!
  • 2 0
Made a set of tubed/studded last winter. They work great.
  • 4 1
 XC skiing (skate).

IMO, it is the closest sport to riding a mtb trailbike. It's a super cardio workout, you can easily get to road bike speeds in the descent (60-70km/h), and it can get really sketchy in the corners when you go fast.

Lots of fun. Can't wait for the season to start! Smile
  • 4 1
 or big mountain skiing
  • 1 0
Yes! I guess it depends whether you have big mountains or not in your area! Wink

There are lots of options to play outside in the winter. I tried cycling on a trainer for a while and I sold that thing last year. Smile
  • 2 0
dude you have MSA and le massif and the gaspie pensula....chix chocs....you have big mountains.....
  • 3 0
You are right for MSA and le Massif regarding the distance, but the rest really far away from me (like 8 hours drive in winter, no thanks!)... There is also the Parc de la Jacques-Cartier now where you have backcountry skiing now I believe.

I did ski to MSA and Massif a lot for 10-15 years...actually skiing is probably the sport for which I have the most talent and I truly love it., but a few ski tripsto Utah and the Alps, where I did back country expeditions was a real eye opener. That was big mountain skiing with snow conditions like you can pretty much never get here, especially when you have a day job. Having experienced real powder and big mountain skiing, I cannot justify paying 70-100$ per day to ski in crap conditions anymore. I will get back to it with my kid in the next years and I'll have a blast, but for now I prefer XC Skate, for which you actually WANT to have groomed conditions. Also, MSA is arguably the nicest XC-skiing resort in Canada, so why not take advantage of it?

I'm taking my prerunner down to Nevada, California and Mexico for a few weeks and I'll see the Baja 1000 while I'm down there. It's still preseason in the mountains so I won't be missing much, then I'll spend the winter sledding.
  • 3 0
what will you do this winter : riding my bike. trying to get my sweat iced. and selling it for somekind of sport ice tea. so i have more money for buying bikes.
  • 4 0
Dark cold nights, ideal for Night rides, takes a little more motivation but f**kit, riding's riding.
  • 1 0
Oregon does not see lots of snow, but it does get wet in winter. Around the middle of fall, I have to put most of my fun aside and start getting the property ready for winter rains and wind. Which takes up much of my non-working time. Though once the house is secure, I look for activities, and MTB is just weather dependent unless one were to spend for mud tires and don't mind cleaning the bike after every ride(which I enjoy).

Mt. Hood has not been receiving much snow the last few years which has made snowboarding on Hood lame. Lots of shallow rocks and ice.

I'll probably just reserve my free time to video games while the weather is shit!
  • 1 0
Hoping for a big winter this year, cause it's been awhile. Would love to get as many Whistler pow days or split board days as possible. But if it's a low tide winter again, I'll just keep biking in Squamish or Pemby. It's really a win-win situation.
  • 2 0
Ride all year round. . Winter is great. I can ride in the middle of the day and not overheat. Summer limits you to early mornings or late evenings.. which works with work I guess.
  • 1 0
I've been biking in the winter for a few years now with an enduro hardtail and a dh bike. For this winter I added a fatbike to the mix. Also a dirt jump bike for indoor skatepark or pumptrack if the conditions are right. With 5 bikes it's never off season for me Smile

As I age, I realize I need more stretching. So I will be in the gym continuing strength conditioning as well as MORE stretching. And then more stretching at home...
  • 3 1
I got a fat bike last year and loved it, now I have to decide whether the conditions are better for skiing or fatbiking. Fresh snow = skis, packed = fatbike

If we keep polluting our planet, temps will rise a bit and we will be able to bike all year round! One of the very few advantages to global warming.
  • 1 0
I'll usually go to our local ice hockey court and slide and drift around, and drift down snowy slopes if it's not too much snow. Certainly improves your balance and technique in drifty condititions.

I live in FL as well, and while it is not characterized by long climbs and lengthy descents, there is certainly mountain biking here. Plenty of trail and XC style riding. I can say that I've had just as strenuous rides when I was in NJ(DH) and VA(trail riding) this summer, it is just different. Faster ups and downs.
  • 1 0
Maybe rack up a few snowy decents in the bike, maybe a little snowbosrding, but mostly get back on my sled and spend time in the trees.
