RockShox Flight Attendant Upgrade Kits Now Available

RockShox have made their electronic suspension system, Flight Attendant, available aftermarket for the first time.

In case you didn't know, Flight Attendant automatically controls the fork and shock settings wirelessly, with the help of a pedal sensor, to maximise the pedalling efficiency of the bike while reacting seamlessly to bumps. You can read Mike Kazimer's review here.

Flight Attendant has been out for over a year now but has so far only been available on complete bikes. Now they're making upgrade kits available to fit a select number of compatible bikes.

The kit isn't just a box of electronics. It includes the fork, shock, shock hardware, pedal sensor, 2 batteries and a charger. For the pedal sensor to work, you'll need a SRAM DUB crank, apart from the Canyon Spectral:ON, for which there's a Shimano EP8 Pedal Sensor. There are three versions of the kit: Trail, All mountain and Enduro, which come with a Pike, Lyrik or Zeb, respectively. The prices are as follows:

All Mountain: $ 2,849 / € 3,080* / £ 2,750*

Enduro: $ 2,899 / € 3,130* / £ 2,800*

Yep, that's the price of a perfectly good bike.

Each kit is unique to the specific bike model (mostly due to the shock tune & hardware requirements), so for example there is an All Mountain kit for the YT Jeffsy and a different one for the Canyon Spectral.

 Would make way more sense if it was only for the rear shock... then I could get behind paying a little extra for an electronic rear shock that offers wireless lockout.

Who needs a fork lockout on an Enduro bike?? Hopefully this is what Fox is aiming for on their EWS RAD stuff.

 @dresendsit: Yep. These manufacturers have really missed the entire point and how this needs to function.
A rear shock that can be programed to firm up a LOT, at certain tilt angles, is all that is needed.
Bump sensing etc. is a waste of resources.
A stiff shock is very helpful for climbing, even on very chunky terrain. The crank clearance and improved angles make all of the difference in the world.
We should have had remote cable lockouts for rear shocks 10 years ago, BT lockout buttons 5 years ago, and fully automated versions by now.

 @hardtailparty: understood but my point is more than half the cost is towards a fork with a sensor on it which is frankly unnecessary. Would much rather pay quite a bit less to have a rear shock-only option.

New Lyric ~ 800-1000$
New Super Deluxe ~ 500-600$

So you're paying about 1200$ for the actuators, sensors and batteries, that doesn't sounds absurd to me. Especially for a first run, you imagine it would come down.

 @arek-hs: I think that branding it as an 'upgrade kit' is the issue here. Not sure everyone is understanding that you get a whole new fork and shock... not just electric bits to plug into your existing gear. Still expensive, but no more out there then half the new stuff being released this year.

 Knowing Rockshox, in half a year you'll be able to buy it for around 2k€ (in EU, Lyrik MSRP 1100€, but most of shop sell it for 800€)

 The shock and the fork alone are around $1800, so the flight control system itself is around $1099 which really is that bad considering what an AXS dropper, and the original AXS drivetrain used to be.

 @dresendsit: This! I would be happy enough with just a wireless lockout button. Nothing automated, no sensors, etc. Just a sram blip on my handlebar that I can press to lockout my shock. I would use it all the time on my trail bike. I don't like how cable actuated lockouts take up soooo much room in the cockpit. You need a full lever, plus there's an extra cable to manage. If I could press a little button and smash quick climb, I would be so happy.

 @Austin014: that sounds like a great idea, I'd like the wireless lockout button to have a "time" setting so I don't need to remember to unlock my shock after the climb. Again, just a better, cleaner, small wireless fork/shock remote is something I'd get behind, especially if it's fork/shock brand agnostic.

I agree with your points, but its even closer than the numbers you posted. These costs are retail. The new Zeb Ultimate retails for $1,159 USD. A Super Deluxe Ultimate shock retails for $599. So the analog versions of the same stuff would retail for $1,758. Just like the figures you posted for actual costs right now, those will go down as the stuff gets less 'brand new'.

Thus, the markup for the fancy tech plus extra parts (sensor, batteries, charger, etc) is about $1000.

It's expensive, but as you mentioned I don't know what everyone here expected? All those sensors and wirelessness cost money.

Based on the comments, it seems like many of the posts here are just people who didn't bother to read the article and just really wanted to regurgitate the dentist BS.

 These are destined to sit on an S-Works enduro in an investment banker’s garage, never to be ridden except for a yearly spin to the grocery store — upon which the system will preform admirably by unlocking the suspension when he rides over a curb.

 @Austin014: Except the other wireless controllers, are huge and barely fit around the brakes as it is.

I guess you could set programming up to firm up the shock, in conjunction with when your electronic dropper is extended.

I just want a shock that locks automatically when the bike is horizontal or climbing. Don't need anything else.

 @SunsPSD: check out the wireless blips. I'm sure they could make something small enough to be functional. Weren't some of the world cup XC racers running a wired blip inside their grips recently? I remember someone having part of their grip cut out so the button could be pressed.

 My sister and her husband just spent $15g updating their kitchen with nice counters, appliances etc. He is a construction worker, she a stay at home mom. I can’t imagine ever spending money to upgrade a kitchen, mostly because I don’t think I’ll ever own a house. But I will, and have, spend $15g on bikes, gear, fuel, lift passes, hotels etc every year after year after year because I love bikes. I am a lowly truck driver.

If these prices are outrageous to you, then spend your money elsewhere. Some people choose to buy expensive bike stuff because it’s the stuff we choose to spend our money on. Simple. No phd required.

 @bsavery: I have to say 1000$ for this tech is ridiculously expensive. I mean every cheap android watch has way more sensors and more porcessing power and you could buy five of them for that money. For reference the accelerometers in phones cost around 1USD and I doubt they use anything more fancy

 My neurologist doesn't bike anywhere near enough to need this kind of suspension (at all), but I'm sure he would recommend the equivalent level tech to suspend my brain from my habits.

 Not sure if it's mistake and just missing from the article, but Santa Cruz are offering the Megatower XX1 AXS Flight Attendant RSV Carbon C build @ 18 249$CAD so the upgrade kit must be compatible in some way with select SC bikes.

 @EnduroManiac: owning a Spectral from 2020, and now i'm wondering which one should i choose over my fox36 (came with the bike)... Lyrik is 35mm, zeb is 38. Downgrade (in stiffness) for 3k? Or add more (unnecessary) weight with a zeb kit?

 While it's way out of my budget, I'm extremely impressed with the performance. A lot of people misunderstand what this does. It's not just a simple lockout for climbing. It's constantly calculating the terrain and rider behavior and making suspension adjustments as you ride. The fork talks to the rear shock. I thought it'd be gimmicky, or just feel like a locked out suspension, but I was seriously impressed. (Obviously this was on a full sis, not a hardtail... Mr. Hardtail Party also rides FS bikes from time to time.

 I'm wondering if this stuff will suffer the same fate as Fox LiveValve. Price is a little out of reach for the performance difference, and it seems like such a specific audience.

 Price is a little expensive, but at least you don't get a heart attack just from looking at the cable management on a Fox Live Valve setup.

 Yup, we have officially hit the cliff of diminishing returns with suspension. The stock dampers and springs are so good that the only innovation space left is to add high cost and complexity electronic, wireless servos in place of a simple, reliable lever. I'll stay a few steps back from that cliff thx.

 Nope, because this works. Fox live never really worked. Performed ok uphill, but seemed to make things worse downhill. Rs flight attendant appears to make it better both ways.

 @endorium: The design principles are very different I know. I've worked with the LiveValve system more than the Flight Attendant, and I can tell you I'd much rather have RS than Fox in this case. I just think the majority of folks will prefer "standard" suspension. Cheers for marginal gains!

 @CamNeelyCantWheelie: Yup, or with linkages, at least on the front end; I know previous efforts haven’t always met with stellar sales successes, but honestly at least something like a Structure Cycleworks, or even a Trust / Motion Ride bring / brought something new with a range of benefits (and some downsides) to the party. I’m itching to try out a Structure, certainly sounds unique.

 @Corinthian: I'd love to see the funds from The Big Boys seriously develop some linkage options. It seems like the only larger leap left in front end performance. I have zero experience with linkage forks on MTB side of things, but the Telelever BMW stuff is really good. I wish I knew why it works in that situation and not for bikes. Again, maybe it's just down to the Almighty Dollar.

 You know what? I am waiting for the moment when someone will go to an EWS race with a frequency jammer and will stand on the shittiest place of the track and jam all the AXS and Flight Attendant devices. Want to raise your seat post - nope. Want to shift a gear - good luck! Fork and shock doesn't lock when they should? All that is on you for choosing a product that in less than 10 years will be e-waste.

 @dkidd: With the stick you get one shot only, before you get the stick. With a jammer it will take a lot of time for someone to figure out what was the problem. You can have multiple victims.

 Someone help me understand why it is only available for certain bikes? A fork is a fork, right? I might be able to understand the rear shock and leverage curves, mounting, etc... but why so specific? Licensing deal?


Also, I spent $3200 on my bike. This is over 3/4 the cost. This is crazy.

 I believe the frame has to have the clearance for the battery/controller. Especially at the fork

 @mechatronicjf: I also wonder if the programming for slope, pedaling, etc. comes fully from the BB sensor or if the system needs to understand positioning of the shock / frame to work properly. This would change frame by frame.

 SRAM's ultimate plan is to charge monthly subscriptions for AXS and Flight Attendant. It's already happening in the car world, where car makers like BMW are charging data and firmware subscriptions and rake in monthly recurring revenue. As informed consumers, it's your responsibility to reject products that accelerate obsolescence and make bikes harder to repair for home mechanics.

 @Chridel: I look at it the other way. Pay 3 grand for a fender and you get a little electronic doodad for you suspension. The question is do you get a hat included for this price.

 @Chridel: rockshox blew it with their fender design thought. Two of the tiniest screws that will pull out the threads with even the slightest upward pressure. Ripped the fender right off my zeb gently putting my bike on the lift at the bike park. Cheesy

 I wonder if SRAM will bring out an Orange Bikes specific flight attendant system called "secretary".........not only does it know which drawer the trail maps are in but it'll also answer your angry partners phone calls when your out riding with your buddies and auto block them......

 I have a friend who upgraded to a flight attendant. Cost a lot, in the end didn't make him any happier than the original setup.

 Went for a ride with my kids the other day and my battery died on my AXS. My fault but also annoying. Just another OCD thing to add to the list of daily OCD things to check. Love the wireless dropper post. I like the wireless shifting 90% of the time. Not sold on this tech just yet. But stoked to see where the tech goes in 10 years.

 Well, it really takes some effort to let the battery die. When it starts flashing red you can easily get two or more rides from it still, so the problem is probably between the seat and handlebars. Wink

 Did you know that every time you shift the LED lights up and tells you the charge level? Green for ok charge, orange for low, and red for very low.

 I think it’s important that we remove all choices from bike buying and we all ride the same base model bike that is priced as low as what the poorest rider in each region can afford. It’s shameful that someone would have a bike that costs more than someone else, it takes all the fun out of riding if I know someone at the trail head might have more features on their suspension than I do.

 Choose life....buy some suspension and tune it.....buy a shockwizz for £200....find out the settings from the factory are pretty much optimal....sell the shockwizz ( for the same price you bought it).. stick with the standard settings.

I really dont see what this offers that a decent manual set up and a compression lock out lever does for far less.

Its just snake oil man..

 It's more than a lockout. The fork input talks to the rear shock and they work together. I'm not saying it's a must have or a bargain, but it's doing much more than just locking out the suspension.

 @tprojosh: I've ridden it (not on a hardtail) and it seriously impressed me. I've been mountain biking for 27 years, a lot on hardtails and a lot on FS. There are lots of people knocking this system who haven't tried it. I didn't love the idea of it on paper, but once I rode it I was seriously impressed. I think this opens some doors and solves some problems for frame designers. It's not necessary and it's not for everyone. I enjoy a simple bike, hence my love for hardtails, but this tech was more noticeable than I expected. My suspension didn't just lock out on climbs, it still tracked the ground, but it was more efficient than being fully open.

 Hyper inconsistent suspension isn’t the answer for bikes. Riders dynamic weight shifts on the bike are a completely different dynamic to cars. Give us a 2 mode wireless ‘lockout’ blip that increases/decreases LSC to an adjustable level. Pedal on the road mode, open mode. Wireless, adjustable, reliable.

 Fork and shock come with this kit, so you are not spending "on top of".

 I can't afford it, but hopefully it trickles down. Having my shock and fork firm up for climbs automatically, then open up for descending sounds pretty sweet. I could run less compression damping and make descents feel more supple, then climb up the trail without my suspension bobbing - without levers and cables everywhere.

I like how its default is open/descending mode, unlike live-valve, which has to react to bumps first to open up.

 It’s tuned and mapped to each bike. It’s the same with Live Valve, had to buy for your exact bike. It’s both software and valving.

 A ultimate fork and shock can sum up to $1800, so for another 1k you can now get this. That seems much less than the upmarking on the complete bikes … not a fan of all these electric tricks, though.

 If you already have one of those bikes with a Super Deluxe and a Zeb. Is there no "cheaper" kit available? . Or shouldnt you be able to send the parts for the upgrade to flight attendant? That would have had much more sense!
