LAST CHANCE: Take Part in Our New Public Survey for State of the Sport 2024

Pinkbike's State of the Sport Survey is back for its third iteration with a new public survey launching today.

Alongside surveying some of the best riders in the world, we thought it would be great to hear your thoughts and ideas on mountain biking as we go into the 2024 season.

We thought given some of the changes and struggles happening to the sport right now, it would be worthwhile to get a perspective from top riders and collect thoughts from anyone who follows the sport in a new separate public survey.

As we have done in the past, anonymous surveys are on the way to a group of the world's best riders' inboxes for their thoughts about the state of mountain biking in 2024. We will continue to cover all of their answers as we have done before with a week of insights into the data.

The new public survey will feature questions on race coverage, rider pay and other important questions about the sport's health and how you interact with racing in 2024. While many of the questions will be unique to this survey, we have created areas where we can compare answers from the professional rider survey.

The results of our public survey will be featured in a standalone article once we begin releasing the data for this year's State of the Sport in April. We hope that those who wish to provide us with answers to our questions will answer truthfully and to ensure people do not send in multiple surveys, we have asked for you to input an email address. Your inputted email addresses will only be used to ensure people do not submit more than one survey.

Over the next two weeks, our public State of the Sport survey will be open to responses, with us shutting the survey at 9 am PST on March 22.

We will then trawl through the mountain of data before we release the results of the surveys with deep dives into the most interesting findings in the first half of April.

Your voice matters so get loud and remind those at the races that are filming you and making money off it that your own bloody family, countrymen and young kids who look up to you cant even watch.... And PinkBike you too as a Canadian based company should be raising far more of a shit storm about this....and being a louder voice in fighting for coverage... Id stand behind you deciding to not post any highlights or coverage for 2024 as a protest for the bullshit that we have to look forward too for 2024.

 @TheBearDen: I have been trying to get some confirmation from WBD about coverage for people outside of Europe, the UK and the US. The last I heard from WBD in February I was told details about coverage in other countries was coming soon.

With the XC World Cup season starting in a few weeks, we should hopefully have some news soon. I'm going to be creating an updated 'how to watch' article ahead of the first XC World Cup which will hopefully have some answers.

I hate being the Debby downer but I'm afraid 2024 is more than likely going to have us left in the dark. And possibly a solution for 2025...

I already subscribe to flobikes for all the cyclocross and road racing... And part of me wanted to believe they were gonna send me an email saying that for 50 bucks more I could get UCI world cup... But I'm not holding my breath.

But I still stand by PB boycotting the world cup and not posting updates, results or any of that shit as a way to protest what's going on. This affects many countries... Many of which have users on this website...

 @dgwww: my Québécois amis said that they are excluded from almost all draws and give aways because the QC alcohol and gambling regulator requires all companies offering prizes to register and place a security deposit with them for the value of the prize until it is claimed. So if PB wants to give away a frame or fork or wheelset or whatever they would need to register and give the regulator a deposit which would be returned once the prize is actually given away.

 @wolftwenty1: if you don’t conduct and analyze a survey like the data science phds do then the conclusions anyone can draw from the results are severely limited. The most basic ethical consideration you can give to your pool of respondents includes letting them know what the point of the survey is. If you can’t draw any conclusions with any confidence it raises the question wtf was the point of asking for a piece of every respondent’s time.
It’s a common misconception that scientists use extraordinary methods to gather some extraordinary upper tier quality of information, and lesser methods are fine for some lesser purpose. It’s closer to the truth to say scientists use the bare minimum methodology still capable of producing data that isn’t trash. Finding that line is one of the many job skills of a scientist. Aim any lower, cut any corners, and you likely end up with trash.

They should also mix it up between massive two day long races with 10 stages, and short one day races with more practice time. A true enduro champion should be a Jack (Moir) of all trades.

 @Ireland2017: They used to dig brand new tracks for the EWS in certain places. Maybe doing it for a whole race isn't feasible, but one track a race would be rad. It would also give back to the local community by having a new trail.

 Unpopular opinion - mountain biking and mountain bike racing is a grassroots participation sport and it should stay that way. There should be enough races within a 1000 mile drive of anywhere on the planet that you could race most weekends of the year. Some of these races will have huge participation and draw the best riders around the country and others will be small and only draw one or two pros each year. The existence of elite World Cup events is not a problem but not a thing anyone should aspire to for this sport. Ultimately the best racers should be dominating the race scene but if they want stiff competition they should go to the biggest events, not make their own event that no one else gets to ride. There should not be a hard rule that the best racers are paid best. The best ambassadors will always be the top tier racers but a lady who consistently rides top 10 at big events might be a better ambassador for a variety of reasons than the best rider in the country and that is OK. Ultimately this is a grassroots participation sport that reaches people the most when they get to participate, interact, and do it with the best in the world (loosely with, my short course shared some trail with xyz great athlete and I definitely saw them at the same start line 20min before I started). Let's all go ride together with aid stations!

 @MillerReid Our State of the Sport project has always been about the more competitive side of the sport. We have run a Community Survey on broader topics before so maybe we can try and bring that back if people are interested.

 Man one thing this has proved is how much people on this website like to complain. You even gave them a whole new way to complain, arranged by topic and in as detail as they want.... and they still complained about that! I've completed the survey, I look forward to finding out what insight this offers. Enduro MTB do an interesting and in depth survey of their readership each year, although that always feels like it's biased towards feeding their advertisers data about their market, it is perhaps a broader look at a 'State of MTB' as a hobby, rather than just the competitive sport at an elite level. Perhaps PB could combine all of their user polls into this, as they often drill into some very specific issue, could be interesting to gather all that data up and look at the big picture of MTB as a whole once a year and see how various trends change over the years.

 When it comes to wages, i think it's hard to generalise. If I would take a good living wage here in Switzerland as base line, it would be much higher than even in Germany, France or Italy. So it totally depends what a good wage is on you're circumstances. I guess that the baseline for a good wage for e.g. Camille Balanche and Monika Hrastnik are quite different due to the average cost of living in Switzerland and Slovenia. If you compare cost of living with numbeo (online tool) for Maribor (Slovenia) and Biel (Switzerland) the difference for the same standard of living is a staggering 3'600 Euros / month (2'900 Euro vs. 6'500 Euro). Would it be fair to put wages of riders on the same team based on the cost of living in their home country? No! I guess the appropriate thing would be to take a look at the average costs of living in the home country of all the staff and set the baseline accordingly.
Whe it comes ot individual sponsors it's a bit different.
In general, I think that riders should earn a marketing wage appropriate to the amount of work they expect from the brand sponsored riders, e.g. if they estimate that they will spend overall 20% of a work week (1 Day per week) doing things for e.g. their bike sponsor, they should earn a 20% marketing wage from their bike sponsor (which could be for example 12 x 7'000 CHF x 0.2 = 16'800 CHF / year by the bike sponsor, added together with parts and clothing sponsors they'll get a good wage).

Regarding racing and coverage: all i watched is the womens races that got shown on Swiss TV (Lenzerheide and Worlds) and skipped through the mens race because all in all it's just too long to watch all the other stuff that might interest me and the full races.

 I thought the same. Even more so, in general income levels/ cost of living is wildly different between for example Europe and the US. There are of course big differences within Europe as well as within Northern America, but with a global sport it's rather impossible to give a number I'd think would be reasonable pay for some average racer. My answers reflect Finnish pay levels in general (and what idea I have of other athletes here) and they would probably be seen as ridiculously low for making a living anywhere in the US. It would actually be interesting to see the results on this grouped by location, since it was asked on the form.

Our rider survey will always be the main focus of this project, but with big changes happening to the sport I thought it may be interesting to get feedback from the public to compare/contrast with the data from racers.

If you want to give your thoughts on the state of the (competitive/pro level) sport and its coverage fill out the survey. If you do the survey you’ll find there’s not much in there that Outside could wet their beak on. I don’t think outside magazine cares that I think pro dh racers are underpaid and that I think there should be more judges at Rampage lol.

It's a matter of ideals. Some folks care, others don't. Nothing wrong with either viewpoint. The underlying frustration and point you are missing with how easily these companies get their data while actively trying to monetize all aspects of life while certainly not giving any of us anything for free isn't really reflective of your condescending comment. And yes, there is, in fact, toms of data associated with these emails we use and companies should pay for it. Or at the very least, folks should not be so willing to give it away for free.

 There is no such thing as online privacy. We lost that many years ago. We are quickly losing outdoor privacy as well.I don't really care except when I'm trying to catch a spot.

 Pinkbike still thinking racing is the only aspect of mtb. Racing is fucking dead. Hardline is the closest thing to racing I can watch. More freeride and people doing things different rather than 200 people riding the same course exactly the same way. The state of the sport is going the opposite way of all the industry enduro nerds claims from the past 5 years and it's dope.
