Project Ride to Work - Bike Revamp Project Ride to Work - Bike Revamp
Last fall I introduced you to my ride to work bike, a 4 year old Chromag Gypsy. While this bike would love to be in the woods on a daily basis, I need to get to and from work and driving doesn't make sense all the time. Over the summer, I rode a few other bikes, while giving the Gypsy a heck of a make over. Inside you'll find a 16 speed bike and no derailleurs, ah yes a fully internal set up is what I wanted to put together and I have succeeded.

Enjoy the commuter re-vamp inside,

Touring trip through Northern Thailand and Laos.

The three of us left Chiang Rai heading for the Laos border with our bikes on top of a loaded bus heading for the border. Buses in Laos are not like buses back home, they do not have scheduled drop off or pick up points. Locals will stand on the side of the road and wave down the bus, pay the fare to the next town and get off. People will randomly get on and off the bus the entire route.

I think I can honestly speak for any rider when I say, "I wish I could have captured that on film". We have all been sitting chilling after a ride and thought "wow, that was unreal. Thailand Laos Trip: Post 2 Thailand Laos Trip: Post 2
Bike tour through Northern Thailand and Laos.

I often argue with a friend of mine about things being "free". He says that nothing in life is free and in the long run you end up paying for it. When I was younger I used to ride with a friend of mine that believes that you have to earn the ride down by pedaling up. Or that you have to pay for your downhill. I do not think a downhill is ever free, riders pay for a lift ticket, pay for a case of beer for their friend who shuttled them all day or like my friend pay for it with a long ride up.

Today I paid for a year of downhills in one day. Story inside,

Where Glasses are Made - Oakley Factory Tour Where Glasses are Made - Oakley Factory Tour
I think the first real pair of sunglasses I wanted when I was a kid was a pair of Oakley Frogskins.

It was sometime in the late 80’s and my old $10 knockoffs weren’t getting me any points with the ladies and I was at that awkward age when I needed all the help I could get. They were sitting behind the counter at the local sports shop taunting me and I begged and pleaded for my mom to buy me a pair. It was as if my whole future hinged on that purchase, I was so mad when she flat out refused. In her sensible wisdom she stated in a tone I had heard before ”if you really want them, buy them with your own money”. I knew it wasn’t up for discussion. My mom was always like that when we were growing up. She would get us the basics we needed to look presentable but anything that was deemed “fashionable” we had to step up and get on our own. It would make us appreciate things more was her reasoning and we would thank her later on. So I spent the next couple of months mowing lawns and chopping firewood and I finally saved enough for my new shades. Then hockey season came and I desperately needed new goalie skates.

Season's End - Here's to a Great Year! Season's End - Here's to a Great Year!
Source: Brett Hornfelt

It’s that time of year. The time of one season ending and another beginning, the time of year when riders are enjoying their off season training. Trying to be the best they can for the new season that is approaching. Or maybe it’s the time of year when one takes a break and sits back and looks at the season they just finished, reflecting on the good times they just had and trying to figure out how they are going to have more fun in the new season. Maybe for some it is a time to strap on the skis or board and go shred the mountains some more. Or maybe for others they thankfully are able to continue riding right through the winter.

Steve Smith - Bike Check x 2 Steve Smith - Bike Check x 2
When wandering up and down World Cup courses there is always a couple things that stand out to you about a rider. One, his kit. How does he look? Does he look fast? Does he look like he belongs in a ballet? The second big player for me is their style. Is he aggressive or passive? Is he attacking the track or defending his life? The third thing I usually look at is the rider's ability to control the bike. Every once in a while you catch a glimpse of a passenger who is strapped in tight aboard the SS Failship.

The first time I saw Steve Smith riding I was blown away with his aggressiveness, control, and attitude. He was pinned coming through a rock garden, in complete control, and exited out the bottom with a pedal stroke to success. Steve struck me as a super talented rider, so here's a quick bike check with him on his rigs of choice.

Firstly a massive thanks to all the entries and to those of you who were bogged under in snow but still went out and still submitting entries for the competition. It was a lot of fun watching all the entries from around the world and I really enjoyed the variety and quality of riding they showed.

Here are the results - after shed loads of entries over December, here are the 3 winners! Chosen by Aaron LaRocque and myself earlier this week.

First Look at the Banshee Spitfire First Look at the Banshee Spitfire
A first glimpse of the first ever production Banshee Spitfire.

The Banshee Spitfire is creating quite a stir amongst aggressive trail riders out there who want a lightweight, low and slack singletrack shredding machine. The Prototypes (one of which which was shown exclusively on Pinkbike last summer) have been used and abused and tested hard, and all feedback from that, plus feedback from many bike forums has been taken on board and used to refine the design. This is the result...

Specialized Command Post - Review Specialized Command Post - Review
Adjustable height posts are quickly gaining popularity, and for good reason. While expensive, they allow you to actually buy speed and control, which is something that can't be said of a lot of other so-called upgrades. Specialized entered the dropping seat post game last season with their well received Command Post. With its unique mechanical design it brings something different to the table, but how good does it work?

Xupetaworx 09 - A Brazilian story of Crankworx Xupetaworx 09 - A Brazilian story of Crankworx
Since 2007, DHBrasil.com.br - a DH/FR specialist website in Brazil - organizes a trip to the Crankworx. The trip was lovingly named Xupetaworx in that same year, and it is getting bigger each year since then. In 2009, between the middle of July and the end of the Crankworx in August, DHBrasil took 30 Brazilians to ride in Whistler.

This is a short story that summarizes our 18-day experience through Canadian lands.

Crankskins - Is your crank wrapped? Crankskins - Is your crank wrapped?
It may not be the next invention to make you faster, or keep you safer, but what's ever been wrong with looking nice?

Everyone knows that us mountain bikers have a habit of making things look terrible in short order. Whether it's from crashes, shuttle wear, or nice abrasive mud, the nice shiny parts we pay for end up looking like mangled pieces of metal in no time. Ever see Holzfellers after a season of use? Not a pretty picture. But now they can be!

Random Thoughts on Shooting the Shore Random Thoughts on Shooting the Shore
The feature film “Follow Me” from Anthill Films takes a look at the on trail experiences that the riders in the film have with each other. All of the riders in ‘Follow Me’ know one another and in many cases they have known one another for quite some time. “Follow Me” takes the relationships of the riders and formats the film around exploring the idea of sharing the ride. More specifically, stoking the ride.

Here's a few random thoughts from a recent shoot with Thomas Vanderham and Sam Hill on the the North Shore.

Hinton Bike Park Hinton Bike Park
The vision of the Hinton Bike Park was to build an exceptional mountain bike skills park that is fun, free of charge, and ride able by all ages and abilities. The park was designed and built by Jay Hoots, and by creating such a great park they have been able to promote mountain biking and the skill development required with the sport. Although the park caters to all levels of riders, the park has numerous stunts/features to challenge any rider. Along with a skills area they have dirt jumps, a drop zone, pump track, slope style course, shore style trail and a flow trail. Living in Edmonton, the Hinton Bike Park is a 2.5 hour drive away, I managed to ride the park 3 times this summer and highly recommend anyone in the area to check it out.

Ryan Condrashoff Welcomes the New Year Ryan Condrashoff Welcomes the New Year
Source: X-Fusion and Ryan Condrashoff

I am glad 2009 is wrapped up. After breaking my collarbone at the US Open and discovering my left wrist would require surgery, my racing season was concluded. It has been a long road of recovery that started on May 25th and once my collarbone healed, I went under the knife for my wrist on July 28th. My surgery was pretty critical and due to the fragile nature of the repair I was in a cast for 9 weeks. I was going insane from lack of exercise and the stench of my cast. The only thing that helped me maintain my grip on sanity was going on one handed XC rides with my girlfriend.

Race Face cool weather riding gear - Review Race Face cool weather riding gear - Review
Riding protection and a few wintery items from RaceFace to keep you comfy and stylish on the bike in the so-called 'off season'.

Race Face has always been a company devoted to creating purpose-driven gear that doesn't suck, so when I received a box of stuff this past spring I was anxious to see what they've been working on lately and how it can enhance my riding experience. Race Face started their apparel and protection line a long, long time ago and built it around the rigors of riding the infamous North Shore and it's variable riding conditions. This translates to clothing designed specifically for mountain biking, built of performance fabrics, with top-notch construction, and all this really shows through in the long run.

A few faves to sum up the year A few faves to sum up the year
This would be the second year that I've had a camera in hand as a 'serious' enthusiast. Having some pretty cool gear to mess around with has made this season even more fun. 'Photo-taking' has become my newly sparked passion. That plus biking has become quite the ultimate combination! Photography has become what biking once was to me; FRESH. It's always nice to have something fresh to think about and enjoy doing. Worrying so much about bike parts has become quite stale in my mind, (not that I don't love biking to death!). Photo gear has now replaced that obsession! I only hope that I've matured at least somewhat over time, so hopefully camera gear won't spoil this new hobby. I've purchased some somewhat fancy gear as of late, (don't worry, I won't go into details...). But the effects have definitely motivated my to try a little harder to get the shots I [think] I imagine. Well... this post is just to show what shots I found to be the coolest, most knarly, most perverted shots I've managed to capture this year. They may not all be the 'mega faves' of Pinkbike, but they're my personal 'mega faves'... sooooo... enjoy?!
