North Vancouver BC - Part two - Secrets and Sins North Vancouver BC - Part two - Secrets and Sins
"Those who deserve to know, know." This was the response by a prominent North Shore figure when asked about the secret trails on the Shore. To someone who grew up riding The Shore, riding the usual suspects is like going out with Pamela Anderson, only you've been with Pamela for fifteen years, and though she still blows your mind, you've secretly started seeing another girl, Megan Fox. Who's new and exciting and not necessarily better than Pamela, just different in a really cool way.

Lots of pics and a few words that won't help you find the old trails inside,

The tracks definitely transformed a few times over the weekend.

Make your bike stand out. Make your bike stand out.
I chose my first bike because of its low-maintenance and strength. When I got my 224 I was not happy with the way it looked. As an industrial designer I wanted to do something about it. First I changed parts to match the color scheme of the bike, I changed my stem, bars, grips, seat and seat post. But even after that I felt like the bike was missing something. The 224 looks like it is bombproof, but the frame design concept seems to be from the early 2000's or even from the 90's, so I thought I could do something about it. Obviously I could not change the frame design, so I started to consider a paint job and stickers.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to make your bike stand out. Here are a few design tips and a tutorial on how you can design awesome graphics and paint jobs on your bike.

Summer Gravity Camps 2010 Summer Gravity Camps 2010
The snow is quickly melting, lots of people are already out riding and the buzz is in the air to ride harder this year than years past. Natural progression is one thing, but how do you accelerate that learning curve? Some of us get ballsy and just start to follow our better riding friends off things and down trails faster, but with no idea of what we are doing or how to take those balls and turn them into real skills. For the more inclined riders, we look into camps and seek proper instructions on how to improve our riding and gain skills and confidence. Camps like Summer Gravity Camps in Whistler, B.C. have been at the forefront of MTB instruction for years and I recently caught up to Andrew Shandro to talk about the 2010 season.

Pump Track Madness - New Mexico Style! Pump Track Madness - New Mexico Style!
Source: Long Nguyen

Spring is here but the remains of winter are still lingering around in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It’s that time of season where people put away their skis and snowboards and dust off their bikes.

If you haven’t lived in New Mexico before, we have some of the best weather. It will be 60 degrees and sunshine one day and the next day it'll be 30 degrees with a few inches of snow on the ground. Sometimes we'll get every type of weather in one day. New Mexico weather is bizarre and random and you never know what to expect. Thank god the weather held up this past Sunday for the (unofficial) Pump Track World Champs in Albuquerque at Gerhardt Ackerman's back yard. Weeks and weeks of hard digging paid off with one of the sickest back yards, with endless lines and transfers. Pics and story inside,

Q&A with Kris Wehage, Research and Development Q&A with Kris Wehage, Research and Development Team Leader in the U.S. Office for FSA
By Adrienne Schofhauser

In the bike world, freestyle riders and racers get the limelight, but evolution in bike components wouldn’t happen without the dialed skills of the industry’s designers and engineers. For more than five years, Kristopher Wehage’s creative mind has conjured up innovative designs for brands like e.thirteen and Full Speed Ahead (FSA). Wehage recently took over as Research and Development Team Leader for FSA’s U.S. office.

Behind the scenes, he’s your typical quiet engineer with an image often overshadowed by the pros his company sponsors. But the guy speaks several languages, has lived in Austria, Germany, and now Seattle, and can ride circles around most. Here’s some insight into the designer who just might be behind the light weight components you'll be riding next summer.

I had been looking forward to putting some time on Rocky Mountain's new 2010 Flatline since my first introduction at Crankworx '09 in Whistler. With less weight and a revised LC2R suspension system, the new and improved Flatline looks to remedy those issues while still holding onto its title as king of the gnarly terrain.

Freeride Mountain Biking takes it to the next level and announces the launch of a new organization: The Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour.

Freeride Mountain biking, which includes Big Mountain, Slopestyle and Dirt Jump contests, has become an essential part of the sport during the last decade. The number of riders participating in these sports is rapidly increasing every year. But unlike other comparable action sports, freeride mountain biking has never had its own world series like snowboarding (TTR World Snowboard Tour) or surfing (ASP World Tour). During the last six months, an alliance of core scene members consisting of professional athletes, event organizers and opinion leaders have been putting their heads together to make a change and initiated the establishment of the Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour - starting in 2010. New Camp of Champions Coach Line up Announced Including Watts, Taylor, Hopkins, Wittmann and McGarry

It’s been a busy winter filled with hard work at The Camp of Champions. Not content to rest on the laurels of one of our most successful summers ever, we stripped camp down like a bike that we had been riding hard in the park. We looked at every piece of camp, rebuilt it, changed out some parts, added some parts and in doing so, have stepped up The Camp of Champions' experience about 20 notches for the summer of 2010. If you have ever wanted to learn how to go fast, jump or just straight up ride better, this is the summer to come to camp and learn to "Send It". Details inside,

Ergon GA1 grips. An ergonomically shaped all mountain grip designed in Germany with ergonomics put at the forefront of the design.

Five points of contact. When you ride your bike, your body has five points of contact with your bike (two grips, two pedals and your saddle). Your grips then make up 40% of the contact and input that your body has with your bike and arguably it is the most important point of contact you have with your bike.

There were so many good entries we’ve decided to expand to the finalists from 10 to 15. The top 14 are the photos with the most faves as voted by you, the Pinkbike nation. The final entry didn’t receive many faves but with the crew being proud Canadians, we couldn’t resists including a shot that got us some sweet exposure at an NHL game (even if it was the Oilers).

Epic Ride Up McNutt Epic Ride Up McNutt
An epic ride up McNutt in the late winter meant a LONG haul through snow but the views were so worth the effort.

On March 1st, 2010 I looked up at the local mountains and saw a clear view of the peaks and a thin layer of high cloud... to me this means no rain and epic views. I raced home, grabbed my bike and the appropriate gear (food, water, GPS, clothing etc.) for an epic ride and headed up to the Woodlot. Be warned, YOU WILL GET LOST if you don't have a good map and or a GPS and know how to use it. There is a labyrinth of skidder and quad trails all over place up in these hills.

The crew drove out to ride a cool spot called Carlmont for a little change in scenery. There were tons of awesome features, in particular some dialed s-berms and a cool drop that we had a big session on!

Max, Kevin, Iggy, and I made our way out to a cool spot called Carlmont for a little change in scenery. Upon arrival, we were instantly greeted and shown around by the locals, which was nice. It was almost overwhelming as we checked out a series of flowy doubles, steep techy trails, flowy trails, booters, hips, and drops. Everything was super fun and we got some sweet trains going through some of the lines. Our buddy Josh took us to a new spot that they’re working on, with some cool step-downs, a 7-8 foot drop, and sweet s-berms. Everyone kind of got settled here, and had a big sesh on all of the features. The berms were awesome, as we hit them countless times, each time trying them a little faster. Iggy was pinning them, throwing up some roost!

Urban downhill events are on the rise during the traditional World Cup race season. From Lisbon to Rio, racers are taking to the streets of major cities and bringing downhill racing to the people. This winter, racing has moved to the asphalt and cobblestones of major cities in a serious way, with 4 races taking place in Colombia, Brazil and Chile in as many months.

The longest standing of these events is the Valparaiso Cerro Abajo (VCA) race in Valparaiso, Chile. In it's 8th year, this event draws over 10 000 spectators, shuts down the largest port city in South America and has been visited by some of the top names in the business. Moto Training for the 2010 MTB Season Moto Training for the 2010 MTB Season
There is more to off season training than just going to the gym, ever tried mixing up your training schedule?

Last winter I had lost a lot of my motivation to ride downhill. I was without a downhill bike and I guess you could say that I was a little worn out from the season prior. I've been racing bikes all my life. I raced BMX from age 10 to 18 and I've raced downhill ever since I was about 15 years old. Oh ya and during middle school I even raced cross country for 3 years!

Check out one of the ways that I stay motivated inside,

Fogelsode #17: Rain Rain Rain Fogelsode #17: Rain Rain Rain
With a week filled with rain, we got what appeared to be a small break in the storm. Desperate to ride, I grabbed my bike and started off towards the woods as the storm started back up again. I kept going anyway, and ended up having a great time ripping some rad trails in the rain!

Rays Angel's Women's Weekend Rays Angel's Women's Weekend
Source: Stephanie Nychka

Last weekend was the women's weekend at Rays and the largest riding event for women I've ever attended. Thanks to Nina Buitrago and Tamara Peloquin, Ray shut down his facility on Friday and 16 coaches took 148 riders from ages 3 to 64 to the floor to work on everything from jumps to skinnies to the pump track. Women came from all corners of the U.S. (Florida, California, Vermont) as well as Canada and even the UK to ride with some of the best mountain bikers in North America. In attendance coaching were Corey Coffey (Intense), Kathy Pruitt (Jamis), Lisa Myklak (Black Market), Leigh Donovon (Intense), Darcy Turenne (Norco) and plenty more. More details inside,

It's official, the North American Pro Gravity Tour begins in Port Angeles Washington's 'Now Famous' Dry Hill DH Track but it's not the first race to be held. For the last 2 years racing has exploded this Pacific Northwest town into the racing limelight and March 26th to the 28th will begin a new season. Previously the NW gained exposure with the 2008-09 Fluidride Cup Series, Pro's from all over the USA, Canada and beyond gathered to test themselves on the mile long track. Nobody beat the 'American Dream' Curtis Keene (Specialized/SRAM) until Bryn Atkinson (Transition) came along to swipe up the fastest man title at the Dry Hill. The likes of Luke Strobel (Maxxis), JD Swanguen (Intense), Lars Sternberg (Transition/Dakine/Fox), Ryan Condrashoff (Intense/Xfusion), 2008 Overall Pro Mens Title Owner Bart McDaniels (NS Racing), Kyle Thomas (Evil), and many more talented racers gather here yearly to add their names to the coveted list of Champions.
