Five Ten has unveiled a new version of its Hellcat and Hellcat Pro shoes at the World Championships in Leogang with riders running a special all-white version of the new shoe.

The new 2021 Hellcat range of shoes marks the third generation of the design that was originally developed in partnership with Greg Minnaar in 2016. Five years later and still with the help of Minnaar there will be a new iteration of both the Hellcat and Hellcat Pro with several improvements.

For the 3rd generation of the Hellcat, the new design features a TPU toe cap, Poron impact resistant toe foam and the Stealth Marathon rubber outsole. The changes for the 2021 shoe will also result in a 14% weight saving which is around 72 grams for a US size 11 shoe.

bigquotesFive Ten has a long history in racing and working with the best athletes in the world. The update to the Hellcat and Hellcat Pro shows our continued commitment to the demanding performance aspects of the sport, working in partnership with elite racers. In a sport where fractions of second decide the podium, every little update counts. Luke Hontz – Senior Product Manager

Five Ten treated some of their Elite riders to custom, all white, limited-edition versions of their shoes featuring their name and country-specific laces

Not much is know yet about the new Hellcat range of shoes but we are pretty sure they won't be staying white for too long in Leogang. The new Hellcat and Hellcat Pro are expected to launch around summer 2021.

Those are gonna look great matched to a pair of khakis. Gonna turn a lot of heads down at the club house.
  • 18 6
@MMOF: really? I think in black these would look great.
  • 7 8
@privateer-wheels: In black MAYBE. But these are white.

Looks like the outer sole will peel off. Need to be rugged and strong. I love my five-tens but with this evolution, I will look elsewhere as there shoes are on the expensive side now.
  • 1 0
@MMOF: right..but it's not clear by your comment that you are opposed to the profile/design, or color, or all the above.

I like the shoe. Not keen on white, but the profile/design is great.
  • 4 0
@privateer-wheels: You're correct. I should've been more clear. This is a one-off run in white. I did a race and psychologically a white shoes is meant to look faster ???? Not a smart choice but hey...treats for their athletes. Let's see if they wear them as they haven't broken them in yet.

The profile is awesome but I still worry about the peeling of the outer portion,
  • 2 1
@MMOF: maybe they did us a favor! Should be easy to see how many people actually wear them, and for how long, given how easy they are to spot Smile

 Idk i like them

These look great. I like the direction the design team is headed. Obviously white wont be practical for general use

@cogsci: "large heel to toe drop" lol please explain where they'd hide a large heel to toe drop on that shoe. I need some comedy today. Would bet you $100 the drop is between 4-8mm probably 6mm.

@MMOF: Don't worry they weren't designed for boomers Wink
  • 7 4
@NorCalNomad: Oh you poor fellow! You need to know what age group a "boomer" is in before commenting on "boomers". Stop watching FOX news. It is not helping you on your "informed" commentary.
  • 8 1
@MMOF: boomer isnt a fox news related term by any stretch. that's boomer logic.
  • 1 3
@me2menow: Well....explain when the calculation is for boomer. anyone knows that it is referring to a baby boomer and I certainly do not fall into that category. You people need to know your facts and FOX is not the place for facts.
  • 4 0
@MMOF: How did fox get brought into this in the first place

@privateer-wheels: all blk or all white shoes look weird. Gray with some blk works best. anything else is blaaa!

@MMOF: Fine I'll put it in an even harsher but true way since I JUST missed the boomer age category by 1 year. They weren't designed with old people like you in mind, and Adidas don't care what an older demographic cares about them. You're not a trend setter and your aesthetic opinions matter less and less as you get past 25 to any youth focused brand like 5.10. Knowing and accepting this is literally part of my job, designing for old people is how you kill anything or brand you want to be cool.
  • 2 4
@NorCalNomad: You sad little flower. you know nothing.

@NorCalNomad: dude quit triggering the boomers. any time old mountain bikers weigh in on fashion it's all bad.

While I definitely laughed at your comment, they would actually make sense in dry/hot SoCal. White reflects heat the best. I’d wear ‘em here.

Yep. Blew a perfect opportunity to learn from 5-10's quality and design. 5-10's used to be head and shoulders above everybody else in the market with fit, durability, GRIP, and design.

Adidas has had Five Ten inventory issues for at least 2 years now, since well before the pandemic, and you're featuring an article that's telling me they might be selling these in 9 months. I've moved on. This article is just salt in my wounds.

Just check ebay. I got 2 new pairs for $100. You can find good deals on older models. IMO five ten makes the best mtb shoes. Nice and wide

Probably not the greatest choice of color for a shoe that will be spending all of its time in the dirt.
  • 48 7
Pinkbike comments are always an exercise in patience. The article clearly says that this is a special edition colorway exclusively for their athletes to wear at World Champs weekend. They are white so that people will notice them and so that the mud will look pretty cool contrasted on the shoes. 5:10 is unlikely to sell them to the average consumer in this colorway going forward, so the judgement of "those will be terrible and not last" just doesn't apply here. The shoes actually look like an improvement from previous models if you just look at the features.

@thepwnstar39: So they will be brown by end of first practice run? That makes much more sense.

@thepwnstar39: Yeah, 5.10 can have its rationale behind it. I still think it's an odd choice. If it works out for them, great. Not sure why my opinion is an exercise in patience. Maybe some chamomile tea is in order if it works you up that much?
  • 2 0
@mfoga: based on the mud in the xc races, they'll be brown by the first corner!

Ok I’m glad the pocket is longer. Took 3 years but finally a company pulled the trigger. So I’m guessing I’ll have to wait 3 more year for the slot to be longer and moved like a centimeter further down.

Look I’m a flat pedal rider and I prefer the pedal more center on the foot. Or ball in front of the spindle. And to those people “Ryan Leech, saying you are doing it wrong, it’s more optimized to have your ball of the foot at the spindle.” I don’t give a F**k about that. When I ride a bike, my foot will be centered, so GTFO. And guess what, many people are the same.
  • 3 0
I use a dremmel to make the slot down to the center. Works like a dream!
  • 4 0
Not many experienced riders ride like that.
  • 8 0
@radrider: I remember watching a video from Pinkbike (I think), where they did a riders "shoe" check and almost every rider had their cleats maxed out towards the back of the shoe. So making the slots further back on "freeride/downhill" clipless shoes seems to be the way to go, but nobody does it.
  • 4 0
I finally dropped my clips and went back to flats. My knees and hips really appreciate the freedom from clips. As much as I thought I had everything adjusted right, I noticed immediately my foot position was different on flats, and after a few weeks of riding some of my pains went away.
  • 3 0
 @kinlodesigns: works like a dream-el?

I'l show myself out
  • 2 0
 @radrider:
Depends on what you mean by “experienced”.
I’ve “experienced” enough achilles twangs related to forward cleat position, to know that my pedal mid foot makes for more comfortable riding.
  • 1 0
I don't recall Ryan Leech is claiming you need to have your ball of the foot over the axle. In fact he does ride Catalyst pedals so he's definitely got a midfoot position.
  • 1 0
@oldmanjoe: I had a similar experience. Rode clips for over a decade with the ball on axle set up. Swapped to flats and started pushing foot forward on the pedal more, but also moving my feet around a bit while I ride. Now I can't get the clips to feel right on my feet and am constantly fiddling, so I only use them for racing and road.

It is really sad adidas has essentially killed this once great brand. I just went to the website and they have 6 different pair of men's "MTB shoes". Of those shoe, 3 are legitimate MTB shoes. Sorry, slip on shoes aren't real MTB shoes and changing the Adidas Samba slightly and calling it the Sleuth is just lazy! Bring back the freerider, freerider pro, and the dirtbag! Until then, ride concepts and others will be getting my business.
  • 5 0
Bring back the Danny MacAskill, too!
  • 7 0
Dude.... The sleuth dlx is awesome.
I really like it. I wear it at the office and on the way to the office on my bike (commuting time is a maximum five minutes)

They actually do work well on stamp 7 pedals, too. Not so much protection but great for some pumptrack action. Wouldn't really wear them for all-mountain, trail or enduro riding.

  • 2 0
What do you mean bring back the freerider? It didn't go anywhere (although I wish it still had it's old shape from a few years ago).
  • 4 1
The 5.10 inventory is sold out. They didn’t discontinue the Freerider Pro, it’s just out of stock. REI bought up all of their inventory and now they’re trying to catch up with demand like the rest of the industry during the pandemic.

Adidas has owned 5.10 since 2011. The quality has improved with Adidas. 5.10 has access to greater resources and manufacturing capabilities.

This comment section is toxic. WTF is going on with everyone?!?
  • 3 1
@sriracha: They lost their way with their product offerings. They made their name with super-grippy flat pedal shoes. That's what a lot of us still want.
  • 2 0
@sriracha: Because I have an opinion that differs from yours, my comment is toxic? Grow up!

Plain and simply, 5.10 is not what it was before Adidas purchased the brand. Maybe inventory struggles are a problem and is why I can't find the shoes I like but the quality has slipped as well, and not only with their mtb shoes. Go to any climbing forum discussing the quality of their climbing shoes and you will see the same response I gave above. Shoe size differ, quality is less, rubber is different.
  • 1 0
@friendlyfoe: I haven't seen the freerider available for months on the 5.10 website. I hope supply/demand is the issue and it is available again soon!
  • 4 0
I actually like these, while others seem to think the other way.

Excuse my ignorance towards MTB shoes, but I'm curious, do they make a flat pedal version of this shoe? Like the exact same upper with a flat sole? I'm not talking Freerider pro, since it doesn't have the strap on top.
  • 13 0
People have been asking for a flat pedal shoe from 5.10 with the velcro strap for years... still nothing as far as I know.
  • 10 0
@srjacobs: I'm pretty sure five ten dont have a flat pedal shoe that doesn't have just laces. Even a flap over the lacee would be nice to keep dirt out

For 20 years all of my $400+ motocross boots were white and so were everyone else's. They get dirty but rinse off and look no worse than rinsed off, beat on, black boots. Maybe not a fair comparison but thought about all the white Alpinestars I loved.
  • 2 0
The best mtb shoe I've worn was the '13ish Freerider Pro in white/blue, where that year's Danny Macaskill shoe was essentially the same but in black/blue. The white got a dusty gray-red dirty white look from riding. They were still the best mtb shoe I've ever worn. I don't get all the hand-wringing over white shoes. I do get all the disappointment in Adidas for discontinuing excellent products.
  • 4 0
Great their shoes keep going narrower in the toe box and they have been adding heel to toe drop consistent with running shoes.
  • 2 0
The problem I have always had with FiveTen's(and pretty much any cycling shoe) is that it is incredibly narrow around the ball of the foot area and in the toebox. With FiveTen's though it was quite vice like in the forefoot, with significant discomfort within a minute of having them on, but at the same time my heel was just floating freely around the shoe.

Are there any shoes for flats options out there that have a better footshape for someone that has kinda narrow heels and mid foot, but more width in the fore foot and toe box. I seem to be recomended wide shoes pretty often when I ask this, but that is not what fits, as I nearly lace regular width shoes together and on most regular width clipin shoes that I wear I perhaps have 1 or 2 clicks left on the ratchet before it is bottomed out. One of the reasons that I have never rode MTB's with flats is because almost every shoe that I have tried just fit so terrible. I remember trying on some Teva's right before they left the bike scene, and I recall them fitting pretty well.
  • 1 0
Sadly 5.10s are the best I have found. I suffer the same problem. I just deal with the pain for a a half doze or so rides til they stretch out. My wife has a shoe stretcher but I don’t use it because that puts extra wear on the material.
  • 1 0
@iantmcg: The Teva's that I tried on, long ago when they made MTB shoes were pretty good. I don't think I could make it long enough to stretch out a pair of 5.10s as they were painfull enough to make walking nearly impossible within a minute or 2.

The other problem was though that they were so loose in the mid-foot and heel cup, I don't know how you are supposed to correct that.
  • 2 0
@insertfunusername: yeah sounds like your problem is more exaggerated than mine. My heel is a little loose too but the laces and Velcro strap keep it locked in decently enough, the inside of the heel defenitely has wear from rubbing though. Anyway these are the best I have found. I do think a good boot stretcher would be a worthwhile investment for you. It will wear the material a little prematurely but worth the trade off for you I think. I never got to try the Tevas but have friends that swear by them... legendary
  • 2 0
@insertfunusername: oh and if you find something that works please let me know
  • 1 0
Do you get ion on free US? Look at their shoes, they are pretty wide. I don't fit into the likes of most Nike skateboarding shoes but the rascal clip less shoe fits me well
  • 1 0
@danimaniac: No ION shoes here in the US. They do look like a good size in the toebox, but if they are wide through the rest of the shoe that would be terrible for the likes of me.
  • 1 0
@insertfunusername: You can wear them riding and golfing!
  • 2 0
Why does it still have Velcro strap that passes through a loop? Aghhhh! I hate that feature on my hellcat pros. Just give it boas already or a ratchet strap. My Velcro strap is disintegrating from needing to be threaded through the stupid plastic loop every single time I put the shoes on. Everything else about the design is awesome though. Maybe the shoe shown here is just the Hellcat and the Hellcat Pro will have a better closure system to protect the laces.
  • 2 1
I WOULD buy these 5.10, but they aren't wide enough, like every other modern shoe out there except maybe some Keens and Birkenstocks... I wanna be you new design person. Make shoes that aren't pointy. Or I suppose I could go for surgery...

Velcro and white... look great, won’t last a single run before turning brown with dirt, and Velcro simply doesn’t last.

What's wrong with velcro? The velcro strap on my Giro Chamber II''s works like it did the day I bought them 2 years ago.

White on the other hand... but I get it... it's just a limited run for the release, no one in their right mind will actually buy a bright white shoe like this for heavy duty riding.

@islandforlife: Velcro and mud just don't get along well. Velcro loses its stick after too much exposure to the stuck and cleaning it is a pain. Plus having to thread the Velcro strap through the plastic loop takes a real toll on the strap. Either the loop needs to go, or the strap needs to be replaced with a ratchet strap or a boa system. A quick lace system (different from boa) may also work adequately.

@SuperHighBeam: I don't have to deal with much mud... but I do ride on the west coast of BC and in a lot of wet conditions. Again, I can only go from my experience with my Giro Chamber II's that I've been riding and enduro racing hard for two years (well no racing this year) and I've had zero issue with the velcro and zero issues getting back and forth through the loop (maybe good design?) and love how the strap holds my foot in and secures the laces.. works great. Will probably get another pair once these are done.

Am I only going to wear these like on the town?

No, you won't wear a set of these white shoes period. They're just for 5:10 signed athletes to wear this weekend.
