Pinkbike Poll - Rate Your Riding Ability

Feb 10, 2014 at 19:12
by Richard Cunningham
In a famous poll, the most widely read aviation magazine asked its pilots to weigh in on their skills. Reportedly, 96 percent stated that they possessed above average piloting skills. While it could be possible that only expert pilots bothered to take the poll, the most likely explanation is that average pilots think they can fly much better than they actually do.

Paul B--damn it s good to see him riding again.

Reading the comment sections on PB shows that there is a significant rivalry among nations over where the best bike handlers come from and who they may be. The legendary riding in the Pacific Northwest has certainly spawned a lot of talent, but British Columbia's mythical loam is not so mythical and the Northwest claims no patent on slippery logs and roots. In fact, UK riders seem to be the proudest muck riders in the world - at least the most vocal. And, there are the Alpine riders, who probably laugh at the ten-meter sections of greasy roots and rock that are the keystone footage of so many North American videos, when places like Morzine, France, feature precipitous headwalls of exposed roots that extend over a kilometer.

photo

And what about big mountain riders? Rampage competitors certainly can claim the seeds to rate at the top - no question there. Skidding down scree slopes, however is a narrow skillset, I'd put the top Alpine descenders above the entire crop of scree-slope specialists who are claiming video footage these days. After all, an Alpine descent requires riding all aspects of the terrain, vert, rock, trails and free-form - and riding styles from trials moves to full-on DH action.

Jerome Clementz destroying the flat corners in the woods.

Tricks are good. I imagine that if Greg Minnaar can do back-flips and Superman seat grabs on his V-10, no rider who has less than three tricks available can be counted among the top ten percent. All tricks, however, will not buy you a seat at the top. If you've never approached the national speed limit on a dirt trail, If you've never learned what a front brake is for, and if the largest knob you've ever needed on a tire is smaller than the pimples on your parts, tuck your butt cheeks back into your spandex jeans and don't bother us with your double flip-whips.

Boost

Fitness cannot be understated either. Top gravity pros are cross-country-race fit. Add the weight room to their road miles, and the baseline for strength and cardio conditioning becomes a determining factor with which to ferret out the best from the rest. All good riders need to be fit. A chair lift or a buddy with a Ford F150 can make up for a lot of hamburgers and missed training days. Skills alone do not a great rider make.

Natural or flow trails? Much weight is given to riders who can go huge on manufactured flow-trail stunts. I'd give equal points to flow trail senders as I would to masters of natural terrain who may never get their wheels higher than their heads. Trails as wide as equestrian paths, bristling with carefully sculpted hips and lips are by nature, predictable creations. Natural trails, however, demand greater judgement and assessment abilities, knowledge of equipment and a much wider range of riding skills.

So, rate your skills on the first not-so scientific poll. Next, add up your points from the first poll and then then click the box in the second poll that corresponds with your overall score to see how you rate as a world class rider.

Rate Your Riding Skill

Take the first poll and then add one point for each yes answer and click your score in the second poll.

Are You Among the Top Ten Percent of All Riders?

Compile your points from the first poll and let's see how you rate among the world's best riders.

You want to really know how good I am?
-I come down with a smile every time!
-I'm always the fastest when I ride alone.
-I'm never the first up hill but I am never the last coming down.
-My jumps always look smaller on vid, sad.
-I'm 42 and only been riding for 5 years but I feel like I'm 25 on my bike (only fatter, slower and not as crazy).
-I never go to fast as not to say hi, sup, or give a chin wave to any animals that I happen to pass by.
-My super awesome wife encourages my to ride because she see how much it makes me happy and when you're that happy, you come back and make your wife quite happy, quite happy!
-I find myself riding, even though I'm not on a bkie, that's how good I am!

Amen. "Riding even when you aren't on a bike", so true! Cheers.
  • 20 1
if you ride a bike and u are at the place in your mind set aaaa, your world class human.
  • 3 1
first of all there is no top ten, history produces way to many people and there are always people that dont find their talent,
the best riders would be the ones that have found their talent, very early living on an area that feeds their talent ridin the proper stuff and having the right master... riding a lot and working hard, you have so many diffrent possibilities in riding that telling whos the best is very hard, but as a freerider i probably choose for a freerider because of the nationalism of the freeride]] lol

but for me its just having good times and wanting to fly high and fly far without being out for 3 monthe because that suckes just having fun on a bike and seeing my mates flow on the trail ive just ridden adn life is more for me then just riding my bike because life is more then just riding a bike even when you ride a bike

 Perfect!! I'm 40 and I concur!!

I'll add this: My 3 year old loves to ride her bike, my 1 year old loves riding on my bike, my wife and I got married and rode away on bikes, and that makes me an expert and loving bicycles.......in my mind, which is where it counts to me!

Dally: that's hands down the best comment I've seen on here, ever. You're the kind of guy I want to ride with, anytime! If you're ever near Downieville give a shout!
  • 5 1

  • 3 0
Dally, this says it all my friend! Thanks for putting the whole notion of rating yourself as a rider into perspective!

Adding to your last bullet point - I see "features" off the side of the road when I am driving my car and have to remind myself "you're driving a car!"

  • 11 0
Best comment I've read in a long time. I'm 40, have a 4 year old, and a full time job. My rides are never more than a couple hours long and usually less, but I'm always thinking about trails: I'm going to rebuild that one jump, or fix that berm that got blown out, or God I love that steep section after that drop... And if it rains, I'm back out on the trail with a shovel instead of a bike. I'll never turn pro, never race a World Cup, probably never do a back flip, but damn I sure do love bikes.
  • 4 0
Has anyone ever got more + on a comment? I got a 3 and was actually proud of it.
  • 3 0
Bragging pretty much means you're not as good a rider as you say you are...
  • 1 0
find it a slightly ridiculous poll when some of the questions are so vague, e.g. "steep" hill. in my opinion it would have been a lot better if there was a category concerning, say, race results to determine a good rider, or even fmb events to give more of a suggestion towards a world class rider.
  • 1 0
 No, not really.
  • 3 0
Dally, we're nearly identical - apart from the wife part. Lucky you, cherish that woman.

"My jumps always look smaller on vid".

Well, my jumps don't even get air on vid.
  • 118 0
this is probably going to be the most lied-about thing on PB for a while.
  • 12 0
Yep, definitely. Right now "leader of the pack" is way out front. I'm betting it should be average to pretty good for most people who aren't deluding themselves...
  • 13 0
This relates to psychology, self serving bias. Average rider should be the highest because it's average. But this poll is actually executed well
  • 4 1
i put "can do a backflip and two other fs tricks" and for the second one put average rider, seeing as how most people on pb are doing these tricks on the reg...
  • 9 0
Just got one point, and I do consider myself an average rider, but it seems the PB community has a lot of unknown and unnoticed world class riders? ...
  • 6 0
Well, surely the question is: Are we comparing ourselves to other Pinkbikers, all other "hardcore" mountain bikers, all other mountain bikers, all other cyclists, everyone in the world... etc.????
  • 4 0
I have to agree with n4st that the poll is pretty good, but with one slight mistake: the use of the word "average". As n4st stated, the majority determines what is "average". However, I don't think the bias towards the next two options is caused by PB members being dishonest with themselves. I'm actually pretty certain that most of us have answered the first poll about our skills accurately accurately. After all this is a community of devoted riders, so the skill level can be quite high. The real issue is that the lowest option should not have been called "average" (as in the pejorative use of the word), but something like "beginner bike handler". Only after closing the poll it could be determined that an "average" (in the literal, scientific meaning of the word) PB member is a "pretty good bike handler" (notice that this is the most common option so far, which is rather probable in this community).
  • 1 0
I am in a mountain bike club since I am 8 years old. I practice mountain biking 3 or more times a week and I had 8 points at this poll. In the eyes of an average pinkbike user I am a World class rider, but I am only 1 point off being a pretty good bike handler. I think this is the way, people should do this poll.
  • 12 0
And tomorrow on Pinkbike, all the names of the people who consider themselves world class riders and local heroes (with links to their profile pages).
  • 1 0
I got "pretty good bike handler", sounds good to me!

Fewer lies than the "What car do you drive?" poll.
Last I saw there were more Lamborghinis than Mercedes and BMW combined.
  • 3 0
I ride in a 'pack' of two... not exactly hard to lead...
  • 6 0
Yeah, when half the respondents claim to be able to ride any trail in a world class bike park… well, if you've been to one, you know that ain't true. "Surviving getting down" a trail isn akin to "riding" it.

I'm average on a good day… and I'm Ok with that because i don't give two sh!ts about where I compare to others, unless I roll off the trail last and there's no beer left in the cooler.
  • 1 0
Yeah do you really think about 40% of the people taking the survey could ride the manager? I bet less than 20% would be willing to try it. Other than that the results seem pretty honest, although they don't exactly define what "steep" is in the climbing question. 10% grade or 15%?
  • 1 0
Even if someone scores 13-15, it does not make them a world class rider. You have to be able to compete with world class athletes (uci/fmb) to be a world class rider.

  • 10 1
how to you measure the skill of a pilot? Most disciplines of riding have a form of competition with a definitive ranking of skill?

Anyway its pretty obvious that Pink Bike attracts only the best riders out there anyway, thats gonna skew the results. As I told a ride buddy the other day, you can't take yourself seriously as a mt biker until you've posted your bike online.

"Until a man is twenty-five, he still thinks, every so often, that under the right circumstances he could be the baddest motherf*cker in the world. If I moved to a martial-arts monastery in China and studied real hard for ten years. If my family was wiped out by Colombian drug dealers and I swore myself to revenge. If I got a fatal disease, had one year to live, and devoted it to wiping out street crime. If I just dropped out and devoted my life to being bad."

  • 3 1
 1. Who cares? Leave it for the racers, races and strava cult to sort out pecking orders amongst those who do care.
2. I scored a seven and am not a "leader of the pack." I would rate myself as average. Some of the questions about geography, and experience with different terrain may speak to skill but are definitely not directly correlated. Also, people are answering this from their own frame of reference. What does a dry trail mean to someone who lives in the pacific Northwest vs. someone from Vegas? What is a slippery root section to someone from Florida vs. someone from the Shore. There will be challenges to every survey, but this one may have some serious validity and reliability issues to contend with. My favourite is when people are asked what type of trails they ride: "technical."
  • 2 0
I'm graded out as a "pretty good bike handler." Perhaps I would have rated higher if they had a "6'2" and over, 240 lbs and over, 54 years old and over" category. My courage has receded with age (particularly since I broke my leg last year), but not the joy I get from mountain biking. Ride on!
  • 1 0
"I live and ride in a geographical area that produces world class riders." I don't see how this puts you in the top percentage of riders. The Athertons are from the south west of England. And started out racing crappy southwest downhill series races that lasted 50 seconds on flat at ashcombe.
  • 1 0
I dont care where my skill level is! In my mind I ride like CG. My friends obviously know the truth....I ride for the love of the sport, the beer at the end of the day, the laughs wit my crew, the ridiculous photo sessions, the new scars, & most importantly because it makes me feel great!
  • 3 1
Until now, I didn't know I was a local hero, trail guide! That's cool, I don't really care so much for the title, I just like to ride. I'm more of a freerider, always looking for new lines, jumps, gaps, and drops.
  • 4 3
The questions are terrible so the answers are even worse !

If what I see on the average trails is the same every where then about 50 percent of people are below average , about 30 percent are average , 18 percent are ' good ' and 2 percent are ' world class/national level ' .
  • 4 0
What has happened there is you haven't understood averages.

I would go out on a limb and say that PB has an above average collection of its frequent users that are above average bike handlers. I base this on the type of riding enthusiasts the site caters too. I site full of DH riders, DJ’s, FR’s and All Mountain junkies that are so addicted to riding that they answer poles is going to have a pretty solid collection of bike handlers.

Yay PB Community
  • 1 0
Or people aren't honest with their skill level, more so with an anonymous venue such as a bike website.
  • 1 0
If I ride a line that nobody else will ride because it's way to gnarly does that mean I'm an above average rider? Now what if I rode it and made it look awful? Now what if some other kid backflips the whole thing? Does that mean I suck?
  • 1 0
I'd say pretty scattered skill wise. Definitely one of those guys who is not naturally talented and has to push really hard to overcome obstacles that most confident riders would send without hesitation. I broke myself pretty badly in the grom days which makes me much more hesitant and cautious anytime I'm airborne, but when it comes to steep and natural terrain, I'm decently confident.
  • 1 0
I'd say I was competent on most stuff, at the end of the day I enjoy riding, I may not be the fastest or get the biggest air, but I'm usually the one with the biggest grin st the end of the trail.

  • 1 0
I got one point, because I ride street, so I pretty much can't answer to the trail related questions. (Well I have been in bike park for like five times but that's it.)
  • 2 1
@drivereight your are right. Enduro is exactly what you describe. But the jump aren't very big normally.
Some rules says less than a meter.
Where I leave dh tracks are just more aerial than enduro track. But as technical.

You see enduro as a race format but in Europe it's a what it's more a perfect mix between AM and dh.
  • 1 0
Enduro is not a race format it's a vision of the mountain bike.
In france, we all dh track when there is big jump, all moutain when there is small technical difficulty. And between them there is enduro : small jump, mostly natural track,....

Yes it is mountain biking but we all have a different way of seeing the moutain. Some prefer jumping other climbing,........

What links us is the moutain in it self.

ps :Maybe we are all speaking in the same way but I didn't the every thing in the english language because it's not my mother tongue.
  • 1 0
If i understand you well :
We are all mountain biking but some are downhillers, XCriders, dirters,.........
Because we create sub genre to define our style to other riders ?

If yes, we are just speaking about the same thing. Just our words aren't the same.
If no, i'm sorry i don't understand what you want to tell me.
  • 1 0
I feel that if you can ride at a natural terrain trail of various conditions without knowing what to expect, you can consider yourself a good rider. And you still have to fit.
  • 2 0
I'm actually terrible at mountain biking. If you did a poll on rollerblading, however... I'd probably score equally.
  • 3 0
 what is "considerable experience"
  • 2 0
Exactly. That's way to vague to honestly interpret how good of a rider I am. I don't want to oversell myself.
  • 7 0
It is experience that is considerable.
  • 2 0
Well lets put it this way: if the place you live is anything like England, you're not going to be ticking "I have considerable experience riding dry, loose trails."
  • 2 1
Really? I have to be able to do a backflip and know 2 other tricks? I'm sure a shit ton of xc/enduro and even dh racers can't do that.
  • 5 0
...which makes them less versatile riders. You can be world class at downhill and crap at slopestyle, so less well rounded. And no one said you have to be able to do anything. It's just a poll.
  • 5 1
realistically, I think very few world cup DH riders can't do a flip. It doesn't take long to learn and they don't lack the testicles... but you miss the point of the poll, its about how good you are overall, and as you say, most xc riders are just road riders with a peak on their helmets.
