$80,000 Worth of Bikes Including Two CeramicSpeed Chainless Prototypes Stolen

Thieves have made off with over $80,000 worth of bikes after two one-off prototypes and an eMTB were stolen from a CeramicSpeed office in Boulder, Colorado.

The CeramicSpeed office was broken into on Wednesday evening with the thieves taking an all black Cervelo P5 Triathlon bike and a Canyon Lux both with chainless drivetrains and a dark blue Specialized Turbo Levo that featured a standard drivetrain. Currently, the location of the two one-off and very valuable prototypes is unknown but the Levo has been returned with Boulder Police having a suspect in custody.

We first saw the Canyon Lux equipped with the chainless drivetrain when we were at Eurobike in 2019 and more recently the brand saw huge success after its crowdfunding campaign raised over $1 million after only two days to further develop the technology.

Jason Smith, CEO of Driven said in a CyclingTips article on the robbery: "First of all, we’re all shocked and in disbelief. We’ve all read about the increase in bike shop thefts, but Driven is a small company and really didn’t think it could happen to us. I strongly feel we were targeted as a bike company. The thieves only took the high-end bikes. They didn’t touch the laptops, expensive tools, or lab equipment; they just went straight for the bikes.

“The good news is the thieves didn’t take any of our newer development and test bikes. I bet they focused in on the concept show bikes and grabbed those first. I have to say that Boulder PD did an outstanding job. They arrived on scene quickly and got photos of the bikes out to the community and bike shops immediately.

“The true hero of the story is Russ Chandler, owner of [local bike shop] Full Cycle. I believe he received the notification from BPD to be on the lookout for the bikes, and sure enough, he saw a guy on the Levo, and called BPD. This is a great example of spreading the word quickly and awareness of the issue. The cycling community can be stronger than the bike theft rings.”

If you have any information about the incident or have spotted one of the bikes then you can contact the Boulder Police Department here.

$80,000 from ceramic speed? So they took three pulleys and a derailleur cage?
  • 210 11
Kinda. The main difference is that while the pulleys and derailleur parts can work, the items stolen were conceptual art pieces intended to show how bikes might look in a reality with different physics and material properties from the one we live in.

Hopefully, that’s not the case; but that was my first thought. That drivetrain is snake oil, and that kickstarter was a grift.

Accidental negative props given, was my thinking too. Sorry dude.

And why not have gps tracker(tile) on these one off bikes just sitting around?

I was going to say the same thing. Especially in Colorado, seems like bike companies in that state have been getting hit over the last year.

The CO front range has been dealing with a huge criminal group the last few years that are behind most of the thefts. They’re driving vans through walls and sending bikes to Mexico. Don’t think they care about gps and airplay tags…

@mountainyj: Great article TY. Its an arms race, its sad but cycling companies need to do like Base Camp Cyclery and harden.

Land air sea 54 perhaps. There are many options out there. I'd work on securing the building too.

@rarerider: yall just gonna ignore the fact an air tag would solve this entirely?
  • 4 1
@NebulousNate: Not sure about that. There are anti-stalking features built into air tags so that they can't be used to track someone without them knowing. If someone else's airtag is with me (like if I just stole their bike), my iphone would pick up the signal and alert me to it. At which point I could remove the airtag or the bike could just be ditched. It may be useful for a short time right after the theft, but I don't think it really solves the problem like you think it would.
  • 22 0
On the bright side, the GPS on your bike just got you all the Strava KOMs in Guadalajara.
  • 5 0
@m-t-g: Okay I’ll try. Steel roll down doors behind your storefront. Steel bollard posts full of concrete in front of any walls, doors, or windows that can be penetrated by backing a truck through them. Reinforce where your roof top units penetrate the roof so they can’t pull them off and climb in. I own a commercial glass shop. I’ve seen a lot of this. It’s sad, but you just have to be more secure than your neighbor. Make yourself a hard target. Kind of like being faster than your buddy when that grizzly shows up. If someone wants in, they’re getting in. Don’t be any easy target, alarms don’t work, and cameras only help with employee theft. Plan ahead or roll the dice and have good insurance.
  • 1 0
@NebulousNate: Everyone will ignore that AirTag idea because it wouldn't work.

AirTag uses other people's iPhones to show you its location, but at the same time those 'other people' are notified of that.

There are some neat gps devices out there and they work great with motorcycles but the smallest one is still the size of small mobile phone. It coud work if you're a Specialized owner but 95% of the bikes out there just don't have a place to stash such a big device.
  • 2 0
@txcx166: Does it make sense to spend $400k to prevent $80k of theft?
  • 1 0
@rarerider: YOU don't have to be within 170 meters. When you mark your tag as lost it will use anyone who has the tile app running to find it. Does it work out in the middle of nowhere? No. If they take it to a big city or put it in a bike shop where people are coming in and out all day you're going to have a much better chance finding your bike than without one. ~$30 for a Tile and a chance at finding a stolen bike is well worth it if most people here are spending $1000+ on a bike. Good luck finding a GPS tracker small enough to hide and a low subscription fee for the service. The other benefit of the tile, which is moot now since Strava offers this service free, is with the $10/month or whatever premium service you could use it as a last known location beacon if you get lost or hurt on the trail and your phone dies/gets broken.

Take photos serial number/bike, hide a tile or other BT tracker, and report bike stolen. Going to be your best shot at getting the bike back IMO
  • 2 1
@m-t-g: If that’s the case then your building is too big for your needs. A large shop might spend 100k to do what I suggest. They likely have a million dollars+ in inventory. Obviously you’d have to do the math. I’m not writing a business plan for these guys. I’m giving my free advice on realistic solutions to reduce the odds of a break in based on my years of experience in being a business owner and working in a similar trade.

@txcx166: still, insurance is a lot cheaper than pouring these kind of money into building a fortress.
  • 1 0
@Kainerm: Not all insurance companies are fair. Depends on the country.

When my bike was stolen, my insurance company covered the amount from the invoice in full. No questions asked. In just a couple of days. For a 4, 5 years old bike. The scumbag made me a favor, actually

However, in my home country, Croatia, the insurance company wouldn't covered more than 50% of the invoice value (and I'm being extremely optimistic here) and you would have to wait it for months..

@BlindMan77: Dumb take. In reality it pokes holes at Mexico's border security letting them through with stolen items. You're making an assumption that these aren't American citizens transporting to Mexico and then breezing back in with an American passport.

Especially given how easy it would be to make a proof of concept of the biggest question mark - the power transfer system. Slap together a singlespeed version, go find a sprinter and take a video. Then put it on a trainer and spin it with a motor for 10,000 km. If it holds up most of go from hardcore doubters to potential backers.

Instead they seem intent on just showing it can shift. I get that shifting is the biggest technical challenge, but if those thin metal plates, tiny rollers/bearings and microscopic contact area can’t stand up to the torque none of it matters. And I could not find a single video of a human being riding this drivetrain, or even someone actually turning the cranks faster than 30 RPM.

What a time to be alive. Three bikes worth 80k.
  • 19 0
A little deceiving really. Those bikes actually have no real ‘value’ as they are concept bikes for which there is no actual market. I’m assuming the $80k is just based on what the company spent on them, which is really irrelevant to actual value. Im sure they have value, but what that amount is would be unknown.

Funny how everyone wants to vote for "progressive" representatives/policy, then complain when thieves/criminals aren't held accountable and get off with a slap on the wrist, which just emboldens criminals. You get what you vote for.

 @mtnbikermaniac: Blah blah blah politix
  • 11 1
@suspended-flesh: hey man, I'm not one to argue politics on pinkbike, but seeing as how bike theft is a very real problem in todays world, especially the USA, he has merit to what he is saying and I agree. I personally know many people who have had their bike stolen, can you imagine? your pride and joy that you spend so much time on maintaining and caring for and creating memories and going on adventures with your friends, all gone in an instant. It doesn't make it better that majority of bikes nowadays are well above 4k+ for even the average person. When you put a lot of work and dedication to make that cash to afford your machine and then someone just takes it away from you and doesn't get any repercussions? Why do you think that there is so many bike thefts in general, its because criminals know they most likely won't get in trouble for it, that's if the police even decides its worth their effort to use resources to help with your bike. I understand you blah blah blah nobody wants to talk about politics but I think this is an issue that is very apart of being a mountain biker as a whole. Nobody wants their bike stolen. The bike industry lately has been a real target for thefts because thieves are starting to realize how expensive and big of a industry it is and they can most likely get away with it, do you not remember a month or two back the post on here about that truck driver that was sedated just so some thieves could steal a whole truck's worth of Shimano parts? That is some serious heist stuff there, no way around it.
  • 7 0
@mtnbikermaniac: Yeah... Im pretty sure "thievery" has been legalized in Colorado.
  • 8 0
@G-Minion: For me at least, the point of contention is when it was blamed on a political party (progressives in this case). I get tired of people just immediately blaming the "other" party. For me, that finger pointing is starting to hit my "blah blah blah" filter.
Im sure people from both sides could come out and argue why it's the other sides fault. And when everyone gets tired of the debate we still won't have done anything to improve the situation.
  • 5 6
@rallyimprezive: Agreed. Why are there only "2 sides" and 'the Other Party"? Because they want us to pick a side and be a dick about it. Distractions. The 'Republicans' like to throw around the term, but there are no real 'Progressives' in power, they are (rather right-wing) 'Democrats' in most cases. I'm a member of the lovably dysfunctional Green Party but only to voice my distaste for the 2 cheeks of the same ass known as the US 2 party system.

so i do penetration testing (physical and cyber) as a job and hobby. The amount i've pointed stuff out to bike companies is astounding. 99% of the time the reply was " oh ok" and nothing was changed after. I literally tried to help quite a few diff companies and the truth is, they dont give a shit. it never bothers someone until it happens to them.

Secure your websites. Secure the physical product as well. The last few years have put some people in dumb cornered positions, expect stuff to happen.

You might as well say "were you hibernating when the Captiol building was stormed" or any other time when there was some kind of civil unrest. I fail to see what that has to do with bicycle company burglaries. I mean cops don't generally prevent burglaries, security systems etc. do. Cops just investigate them when they happen.

Policy is made by governors/mayors/DA. Ez there name caller. Who told u? I have many friends and family in local leo as well as fed.
  • 2 0
@jrocksdh: Wrong. Police policy is officially departmental and a-political, whether or not in reality those individuals influence it.
He can't answer your question if you don't tell him what you're asking.
If you're asking who makes policy, you can read any police dept's policy document and it'll tell you. But that's just you introducing a straw man, the topic here is burglarly, and that fact that police do not prevent them, they investigate them afterwards. If you think the police do prevent burglaries, you should say exactly how you think they do so.
