Thieves have made off with over $80,000 worth of bikes after two one-off prototypes and an eMTB were stolen from a CeramicSpeed office in Boulder, Colorado.
The CeramicSpeed office was broken into on Wednesday evening with the thieves taking an all black Cervelo P5 Triathlon bike and a Canyon Lux both with chainless drivetrains and a dark blue Specialized Turbo Levo that featured a standard drivetrain. Currently, the location of the two one-off and very valuable prototypes is unknown but the Levo has been returned with Boulder Police having a suspect in custody.
We first saw the Canyon Lux equipped with the chainless drivetrain when we were
at Eurobike in 2019 and more recently the brand saw huge success after its crowdfunding campaign raised over
$1 million after only two days to further develop the technology.
Jason Smith, CEO of Driven said in a CyclingTips article on the robbery: "First of all, we’re all shocked and in disbelief. We’ve all read about the increase in bike shop thefts, but Driven is a small company and really didn’t think it could happen to us. I strongly feel we were targeted as a bike company. The thieves only took the high-end bikes. They didn’t touch the laptops, expensive tools, or lab equipment; they just went straight for the bikes.
“The good news is the thieves didn’t take any of our newer development and test bikes. I bet they focused in on the concept show bikes and grabbed those first. I have to say that Boulder PD did an outstanding job. They arrived on scene quickly and got photos of the bikes out to the community and bike shops immediately.
“The true hero of the story is Russ Chandler, owner of [local bike shop] Full Cycle. I believe he received the notification from BPD to be on the lookout for the bikes, and sure enough, he saw a guy on the Levo, and called BPD. This is a great example of spreading the word quickly and awareness of the issue. The cycling community can be stronger than the bike theft rings.”
If you have any information about the incident or have spotted one of the bikes then you can contact the Boulder Police Department

The CO front range has been dealing with a huge criminal group the last few years that are behind most of the thefts. They’re driving vans through walls and sending bikes to Mexico. Don’t think they care about gps and airplay tags…
AirTag uses other people's iPhones to show you its location, but at the same time those 'other people' are notified of that.
There are some neat gps devices out there and they work great with motorcycles but the smallest one is still the size of small mobile phone. It coud work if you're a Specialized owner but 95% of the bikes out there just don't have a place to stash such a big device.
Take photos serial number/bike, hide a tile or other BT tracker, and report bike stolen. Going to be your best shot at getting the bike back IMO
When my bike was stolen, my insurance company covered the amount from the invoice in full. No questions asked. In just a couple of days. For a 4, 5 years old bike. The scumbag made me a favor, actually
However, in my home country, Croatia, the insurance company wouldn't covered more than 50% of the invoice value (and I'm being extremely optimistic here) and you would have to wait it for months..
Keep living in the 80's man. I'm sure it was much easier justifying your cloaked racism back in the "good ol' days". You don't just get to shoot or lynch people you don't like Rittenhouse
Instead they seem intent on just showing it can shift. I get that shifting is the biggest technical challenge, but if those thin metal plates, tiny rollers/bearings and microscopic contact area can’t stand up to the torque none of it matters. And I could not find a single video of a human being riding this drivetrain, or even someone actually turning the cranks faster than 30 RPM.
You were on to something with that “single speed” talk but you lost me at “motor” and then that talk of “shifting” just made it worse!
@hamncheez
I was excited to see the “single speed” video you linked but there was no dirt anywhere!
My disappointment is complete.
But, the main thing is to see what happens to the thief now.
Back on the streets or gna do time?
Most likely was given a court date and released from jail right away. The harshest sentence they will likely recieve is court probation, if the DA even files charges at all.
Funny how everyone wants to vote for "progressive" representatives/policy, then complain when thieves/criminals aren't held accountable and get off with a slap on the wrist, which just emboldens criminals. You get what you vote for.
Im sure people from both sides could come out and argue why it's the other sides fault. And when everyone gets tired of the debate we still won't have done anything to improve the situation.
Secure your websites. Secure the physical product as well. The last few years have put some people in dumb cornered positions, expect stuff to happen.
At least one person was angered by that.
Thanks for answering my lingering question!
How many persons, shops, and bike companies have had major thefts in the last few years?!
Are there no cops in Colorado?
Were you hibernating during the blm/defund police chaos?
No, I remember them well, and I'm not sure what your point is. You might need to elaborate.
Policy is made by governors/mayors/DA. Ez there name caller. Who told u? I have many friends and family in local leo as well as fed.
He can't answer your question if you don't tell him what you're asking.
If you're asking who makes policy, you can read any police dept's policy document and it'll tell you. But that's just you introducing a straw man, the topic here is burglarly, and that fact that police do not prevent them, they investigate them afterwards. If you think the police do prevent burglaries, you should say exactly how you think they do so.
Every CA Leo and fed leo I know consistently share to our group of friends how handcuffed they are by .Gov at state and fed levels.
Usually by executive decrees.
Just in my immediate circle I've got costa mesa swat; San Diego sergeant; navy seal; blm ranger of 30 years; and A few lawyers. So when many of them tell me they cannot enforce certain laws or hold certain criminals very long because of new policy and/or political pressures I believe them.
San diego sarge told me "street justice's is going down bc our hand are tied. And we look the other way when it happens ". That's all I got. Take care
When we had our work (aerospace and robotics engineering company) vehicles covered in marketing, they were constantly broken into, once a week at least. Now they’re all incognito and not one of the 60 or so has been broken into in the three years since.
An acquaintance had a really nice van covered in stickers. He went on holiday, people broke in. They used his van to steal three MTB’s, two dirt bikes, a Ducati, and all the equipment. The van was found a few days later burnt out and missing the (again, expensive) wheels. The stupidest part was that he had no type of insurance on any of it that covered theft.
Thanks for the heads up!
