Ah yes, yes, mmhmm same front tire as me... I always knew I had winning potential.

Maaaaan I‘m getting so annoyed from these comments. How came do you have the right to judge Semenuks bike?! The dude is the f*cking goat of bike riding and if he chooses to run a single crown fork it definitely doesn’t mean, he’s going for a slope run.
Pretty sure if you ask Brage who’s the boss on two wheels, he will say it’s Brandon.
All these keyboard warriors need to chill!

@felix1999: I don't think anyone making these comments, including myself, is trying to knock Brandon. I agree he is a master. The only point here is keeping rampage a raw freeride event. Each year it is getting closer to a sculpted slopestyle line. It's all entertaining, but nice to keep a strong distinction between them.
  • 2 0
@felix1999: Fair point! The cable routing of the front brake does seem to indicate barspins though.
  • 12 0
@crsimmons: Actually it was a natural terrain event then turned to ramps and wood features and now back to complete natural terrain again. It has never been so at its roots as the OG days. Your comment is dumb. It’s always been built lines.
  • 6 1
@felix1999: this is true. i am so stoked to see a single crown at modern rampage. its still freeride.

@lepigpen: you guys are such a bunch of gate keeping insecure weirdos. Like dirt biking is right over there if you wanna pretend there are rules to this shit. It’s goddamn mountain biking, do whatever you want
  • 2 1
@anchoricex: @anchoricex: Was making a simple joke and people seemed to have read it differently. I dunno how it comes across online. The joke was that mixing freeride and slopestyle (what the event is) gives you FreeStyle. Which is exactly... What the event is and excels at. Free to ride how you want, build how you want, etc.

I guess I gotta put /s when I post on pb... Though I'm not sure people know /s here or not.

  • 18 0
Single crowns at Rampage aren't anything new. Fun fact: I remember Steve Romaniuk rocking a Totem back in the day. He even had an insane crash with it on a huge drop. He came up short, jumped off the bike mid air and landed on the handlebar, butt first. The Totem literally saved his ass lol. There was a sequence of that crash in German Freeride magazine. Good times.
  • 3 3
When has the single crown fork ever worked out for any of the riders trying it ?
I'm not gonna be the guy claiming to know more than brandon semenuk .... however it seems curious to me.
The only reason I see is that he knows they are back at the 2017 venue where a lot of stuff is pre built meaning he'll focus more on tricks

Ya, but u almost have to keep a dual crown on your bike at rampage, just because its freestyle DH. so maybe semnuk should trie throwing some flip wips on a Dh. For all I know he probably has . Than he would still keep the style of bikes as most of the other riders
  • 14 0
@asapyohanes: @asapyohanes: Maybe- but this is also a new generation of forks. Hard to compare a current 190mm ZEB to anything that was available in previous years in the single crown realm. Given how BS approaches things I would assume he would be fairly certain the fork would work for him prior to diving into the red dust with it. Really excited to see him back in the ring and what he can throw down.
  • 1 0
 @snl1200: same. Times change
  • 3 0
@cwatt: the rock shox totem was a huge let down. creaky crowns with a 1.5 steerer, air forks that blew through the travel, coil forks that were way to linear and never ramped up. junk
  • 3 0
@RedBurn: suicide no hander. Prove me wrong
  • 1 1
@asapyohanes: The dampening systems are better in just the last couple years so we don't need as much travel for the same feel.
  • 1 0
@DDoc: I'm sure you're right, I have neither ridden the old Totem nor the new Zeb. When I think of people riding single crowns at rampage the only thing that comes to mind is compromise. But I'm sure Brandon wouldn't be doing this if he didn't believe in the product. His line from 2019 is burly but lots of opportunities for tricks sprinkled in so good for us I guess
  • 1 0
@BoneDog: Where did you ride to kill your Totem? I loved mine and never had any issues with it. I'm 6'2'', 200lbs, a hack, and rode my Totem hard for 3 seasons all over BC, including over 100 days at Silver Star and Whistler...
  • 1 0
@Irishrogue: Ontario Cup DH, I was maybe 140 lbs at the time. I had a totem air 1.5, got it warrantied after creaking crown and Bushing issue within the first season, then got a totem Coil, once again warrantied creaking crown. Finally sold the fork and jumped on a Fox 36 Float RC2 1.5, and the rest is history. They looked cool as hell and surprisingly light for how burly the fork appeared, but aside from, this, hard pass.

  • 3 0
@CircusMaximus: I did that back in the day. 2002 Norco VPS Launch with Shore Linkage and a Vanilla RC. The fork was a Super T (I was trying to keep it light lol), and SUN Doublewides 24" rear 26" front with those meaty yet sketchy Nokian tires. I can't believe I used to jump stair sets with that rig.
  • 3 0
@oldmanbucksaw: back in the day that would have been the hottest rig around. I often lusted after just that setup but could never bring myself to buy one. The 3” gazzalodi tyres were the wildest looking things. I stuck with the 2.5” IRC missiles, the “perfect” mix of wild and usable.
  • 2 0
@oldmanbucksaw: hahaha exactly! I had a green Launch and set it up the same way. Also ran 25/24 on my P3 that I waaay over forked.
  • 1 0
@Afterschoolsports: I swapped them out for High Rollers after a while. The Gazz's were cool, but way to unpredictable.
  • 1 0
@CircusMaximus: I had a 2001 Torrent with a late 90s Junior T on it before the Launch. The dual crown Junior T really slackened out the head angle, but only had 4ish inches of travel. The arch on that fork was removable, so I swapped in a Blackspire Shock Tower arch for a little more tire clearance. Things are so much simpler and better these days.

  • 2 0
@Mcbellamy: Yeah, it was probably his Session or Slash though. The Ticket S is "very different" looking to a Session (as far as Treks go), plus it would missing a front brake and drivetrain. He rides undersized frames because they are more nimble.
  • 5 0
It was a (custom built?) session. Had a triple clamp fork in it.

Not calling out Brandon. He clearly rides small bikes for a reason. Not here to judge anybody’s bike choice.

Crank damper? Is that so the pedals kinda stay where you left them when your feet leave the bike to do tricky stuff in the air and then come back trying to find them again before landing?
  • 9 1
oldschool bmx crank damper meant to cut off the flange of your ODI Longneck grips and push them between the BB and chainring, i expect it's something with a similar effect
  • 7 0
Yes, never knew about this until Cam McCaul did a video on it a few months back in his vlog, apparently all the slope guys do this. Drill a hole and screw a bolt through, you get to control the amount of friction that way. Link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=M72Gl2s0jHY

I have a dream of building my own bike brand that makes 26/27" bikes that are designed to do everything except pedal and race. Sell them factory set up for barspins. It's crazy how much modding is needed to turn a bike into something like this. Everything is just sold as race missiles or pedalling bikes.

My guess is some trucks off drops - lots of 3s happening already and maybe some whips and bars on the smaller features at the end. I think the Zeb will be adequate if he can avoid overshooting any big drops and it will still take some good size hits if he leaves some rough sections in. Only time will tell though!
  • 3 1
It's cool that the electronic shifting finally solves the issue for wanting gears but still being able to tailwhip and barspin. Long shifter cables do work, but after you spin a few times the cable stretch skews the shifting accuracy a bit. Interesting as well is the steer tube routed front brake cable with running 190 mm fork. It would be cool to see a slow-mo of a bottom out as to how the cable comes into contact/clears? the fork Arch.

Thought he would go with the hydraulic gyro for this approach.
  • 2 0
Maybe he ordered one at the moment sram paid him for the video
  • 4 0
Probably too dodgy to trust during Rampage with that system being more prone to leaks than a standard set up. The heavier weight of bigger front wheel/tire combined with the drag of those trixstuffs would make it a real chore to barspin too.
  • 4 0
Thought SRAM would drop the AXS Codes
  • 2 0
Hydraulic gyros are kinda iffy and can be unreliable at times. For a slopestyle course its fine because you don't brake as much but for rampage u don't want to make it halfway down and see brake fluid leaking out of the gyro.
  • 1 0
@WestC0astWanderer: Indeed , was curious if someone would risk rear brake integrity. Always want safe runs but you have to wonder what a backflip dub whip scores at Rampages.
  • 1 0
@WestC0astWanderer: actually the latest trick stuff gyros finally solved the unreliability of the hydro gyros, they ended up custom machining a pretty gnarly part in a really small form that’s typically used on larger applications.

Semenuk does have a couple of these on his ticket s builds but right now trickstuff has some issues with the supplier they’re sourcing some of the parts from due to covid and because of that can’t guarantee the parts are within spec and aren’t selling any right now. Got to take a peek at one of the new hydro gyros last summer and I very much want one.

Can you configure how many cogs an AXS shifter can manage? I thought when I looked that up a year or so ago, it was "no, only 12 speed cassettes will work", and that DH cassette is certainly less than 12.
  • 3 2
It’s the spacing between the cogs that maters. Take a 12 speed cassette and remove 6 sprockets and add in spacers. Now you have a six speed bike.

Tailwips and barspins in Rampage all the way! Electric shifting for the win! No more cable twisting! Unfortunately that front brake routing wares out the cable extra fast! Im sure it doesn't get a second thought from sponsored riders who get replacements for free. But it is a costly draw back for the rest of us. I believe there is a much better way to route the front brake cable so it doesn't bend as aggressively, go in the tire, or kink when the suspension bobs.
  • 1 0
Wireless brakes are surely on the way. Matt Stephens has been saying this for a while
  • 1 0
@plumberso: and ABS too im sure. Ill believe it when I see it . I think electric braking would create more modulation issues than anything else.
Hydraulic shifting on the other hand could solve cable stretch and twisting issues
  • 1 0

The Park Tool guys must laugh knowing all the bike mechanics in the world could be using a simple tubing cutter for aluminum steering tubes and handlebars.
  • 1 0
The problem with pipe cutters is they flair the ends. I tried it once and it worked but I had to rework the end quite a bit with a file to make the headset washers fit. Now I use it to mark the line but use a hacksaw to make the cut. I would buy a cutting guide if I wasn't a tight wad
