Elite Final Results & Overall Standings from the Leogang DH World Cup 2024

Jun 9, 2024
by Ed Spratt
The results are in from the third stop of the 2024 DH World Cup as the lower woods once again provided a tough challenge for riders.

Vali Höll provides a masterclass in Leogang as she backs up her win here last year with another standout performance. Höll crosses the line at her home race with a massive winning margin of 7.1 seconds as she is unfazed by the tricky conditions. Anna Newkirk put together a great run securing second place ahead of Myriam Nicole's return to the podium in third place.

Loic Bruni carries on his incredible form in 2024 as he is yet to finish outside the top two in finals. In a battle against his teammate Finn Iles, Loic Bruni comes out on top in Leogang as he pulled back over 2.6 seconds through the final three sectors on his way to a second World Cup victory this season. Despite a thumb injury and only seven runs on the course this week, Finn Iles takes home second place ahead of a charging Lachlan Stevens-Mcnab.

Check out the results below.

dare i say it, coverage and commentary seems good
  • 21 2
Actually, as long as there's a long time pro in the booth, it's pretty good. Kind of inverse to red bull days when Rob was the draft horse and side kicks were so so.
  • 25 5
@xice: Ah but Rob is a long time pro!
  • 37 1
Watching excellent MTB downhill coverage from Juniors' to Elite categories for 3 hours now, with excellent commentary and great broadcasting....it took a while, but now it's really fun to watch. Happy customer here Smile
  • 88 6
Those interviews mid-race can just do one. Adds nothing, subtracts drama, pointless drek.
  • 30 3
Except that we see zero of the top 2 min of a less than 4 min course. Disappointed they aren't showing the tree stump section at all.
  • 7 4
Soon as the men started they’ve decided to stop showing the whole top section for some reason? Go figure
  • 19 3
@wilsonians: currently there are only 2 min gaps between the riders so its impossible to show the full run yet.

The top 10 have 4min gaps to show most of their run.
  • 5 3
@dhftw1231: 1st rider gets their full run shown as they are the only rider on course.
  • 18 5
@casey79: then the gaps should be changed. They were perfectly happy to stream semis and finals last year. They’e now stopped streaming semis but can’t add 20mins to a broadcast so we can see full runs? That we pay for? Come on
  • 62 3
Josh is much better than Ric but he needs to stop talking for long enough to let Aaron do his thing (we all want to hear what Aaron says).
Hopefully they will replace the finish interviewer with Ric where he is much better suited (the person they've got is embarassingly awful)
  • 21 24
Good old PB punters with the UCI World Cup of commentary, commentary.

Do any of you watch or even like the bike racing part?
  • 6 6
Josh also needs to work on anticipating the split times, and providing the info when it comes in. Now it was often Gwin announcing the times.
  • 6 2
@casey79: This is not difficult to understand, yet so many people just don't get it. You can disagree with what sections they decide to focus on, but bitching about the how much of the run is shown doesn't make sense.
  • 40 0

@dirtyburger: I think of it like going to a restaurant. The food might be fantastic, but your waiter/waitress can make the overall experience anything from okay to excellent, and hell yes, I'm going to praise or bitch about the service they provide.

 Carlson is the future. Frother!!!!
  • 12 5
Hate the mid-run interviews. Too few cameras or shots of important sectors. Can't stand the non-DH commenters. My 'free' Max/BR feed hung frequently on both audio and video and except for Rachel and Aaron would have been better with the sound off.
  • 18 4
generally good coverage. Love having pros in the booth. dont like thew mid run interview dont like the far away drone shots, just stop it. dont like the instant replay while the run is still happening. Christ, I wanna watch the race!
  • 12 1
They should alternate with Eddie and Gwinn one world cup and Jack and Aaron the next. Tahnee was awesome in the booth for hardline. Love Rachel but waaay to much chatter in the booth. Tracy Mosely would be ideal
  • 7 0
@Planetx888: agree. The replays during the run were driving me insane most of all but the drone shots from distance were wayyyy to far away.
  • 3 0
 @nateb: Savage !
  • 12 1
@RHSGuy: I’ve said it before and il say it again. It has been ‘jobs for the boys; for the last few years. Now we’ve got someone with real energy and commentary potential in the booth and it’s immediately an improvement! Come on Carlson! Loved it.
  • 4 1
@mi-bike: lol. I agree, but there have been so many comments trashing RM for announcing the splits times “that we can clearly see on the screen”
  • 3 0
@casey79: not quite. There’s someone a minute or two behind them, but the production crew needs time to collect the next rider’s footage and then edit it on-the-fly into a continuous “run”
  • 8 3
 @watchmen: 100%
I thought Josh was pretty solid for the most part, but he kept interrupting Aaron to the point that it was pretty distracting
  • 2 0
@watchmen: I completely agree that ric is a much better interviewer. It's where he's most appreciated
  • 1 0
@wilsonians: need to wait for top 20 to get longer start gaps, yep it’s annoying
  • 14 1
@steezysam: He just needs to stop trying to fill every second. In one of Warners interviews he talks about going to RedBull to be taught how to commentate and he said the hardest thing is just knowing when to be quiet.
A few times Josh was talking word soup to fill a gap or he'd just repeat what Aaron had literally just said.
I'm sure he'll see this and take on board all of our constructive criticism :o)
  • 9 1
I’m not trying to be a jerk or take anything from Rachel‘s incredible achievements in downhill mountain biking but I like Seagraves a lot better on the mic. Just my opinion. I felt like they were all talking at once sometimes.
  • 5 5
@watchmen: that’s hilarious seeing as Rob Warner never stops talking.
  • 10 1
To be fair i thought Josh was really good and i imagine he'll only get better. A likeable color commentator together with the wealth of knowledge and brevity that is AG.
  • 6 3
Aaron Gwin gives great insight. But sometimes his voice gets really monotone and he just drones on and on. Give the other dude a bit more opportunity to inject some hype.
  • 4 1
@watchmen: I felt like Aaron never stopped talking honestly. Interesting how different our perspectives can be!
  • 4 0
@rallyimprezive: The fact that many commentator critics have given Ric and Josh grief for interrupting him seems to indicated that he is not, in fact, brief either
  • 7 2
@PHX77: yep Tahnee knows to keep it short and sweet, Rachel talked for ages over all split times etc, was a bit painful to be honest
  • 115 0
 Great result for Anna Newkirk!
  • 9 9
Who is she? She doesn't get any attention from the "press". This is an awesome result for her.
  • 30 0
Yeah, awesome result for Anna, congratulations Anna, well deserved. Sscottt - Anna is the reigning US national DH champion, no idea why she gets so little coverage by the press. She rides a Contra downhill bike
  • 5 0
 So rad!
  • 24 0
Steel Contra bikes on a World cup podium !! Bravo Anna
  • 6 0
She’s been riding strong all season, stoked for her.
  • 13 0
@Sscottt: Anna and Mille Johnset juniors in 2018/19 with Vali Höll, so were a bit overshadowed then, though they both won races and beat Vali at the time. I think the three of them were on every junior podium in 2019.
Anna's been coming along slowly but strongly as a senior, as we see here. Great result.
  • 15 0
@The-Foiling-Optimist: I've been saying for a while Anna's career is a bit like Andreas Kolb's early days where he gradually moved up the results to be a top level racer.

Anna's great in real life too, she always helps out at our local build days
  • 4 0
 @Sscottt:
Anna has been there, in and around the top 10, for a few years.

But along with several US riders in DH and XC, she seems to have really stepped it up this year.
  • 7 0
If they make it harder for teams that aren’t rich to compete you won’t see this in the future. I hope people get this. What does it cost to have a team at a race vs what do you get as a win?
  • 90 5
No Ric McLaughlin... this is the best race of the year already!!!
  • 54 5
Loic continue to make his case as the second coming of the GOAT
  • 3 1
Sorry, accidentally hit the downvote button. I was starting to wonder myself when he will be in that conversation. He’s got a ton of WC and W Champs wins. Seemingly always in contention.
  • 10 2
The real GOATs, objectively and so far, are Nico Vouilloz and ACC, palmares wise.
But being a GOAT really means anyway?... Smile

@ridedigrepeat: nothing to do with my "frenchness". This is simply mathematical, little jealous rican Smile

To be fair , we should not forget the last run from Goldstone in MSA. Loic is definitely the most consistent, but it seems that this year , all his serious opponents are either injured or coming back from long injuries (Pierron)

  • 3 0
@PHX77: he’s not bad, but he’s not good. It’s telling that Gwin, Rachel, Greg, every rider they get in there is more compelling than him and they’re doing it as a sort of side gig when it’s his career.

This is the first dh race I’ve watched live an about a year. It’s an improvement but those mid race run interviews are driving me mad. And can someone please tell Josh Carlson to stop interrupting Gwin and chatting a load or irrelevant gibberish
  • 1 0
On Max (and at least on the Eurosport website and previously GCN, I assume also on the Discovery+ app) there are two different streams, one with the "hosting" (Kate Mason + guests) and the mid race interviews, the other without, with some rider interviews played pre race. I much prefer the latter, but unfortunately now watching my first race through Max after it's launch here, for some reason I couldn't get the English commentary to work on it when Casting it onto my non-smart TV. I really hope it was just some weird glitch, I really haven't missed the additional chats much.
  • 14 12
Carlson was almost as annoying today as Rob Warner always is. Warner drove me crazy during Hardline talking gibberish over half the stuff Tahnee had to say.
  • 14 2
@FuzzyL: I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I agree. I’m not taking anything away from his contribution to the sport, but hearing him talk over people constantly gets old.
  • 24 1
Best race coverage since the switch from Redbull. Gwin is made to be a pundit and commentator! And Josh is an actually likable, funny guy! I hope this can be a permanent thing. Rick McLaughlin just sucks the life out of the broadcast.
  • 11 0
What a relief to not have to listen to Rick today
  • 2 0
Josh brought the energy the broadcast needed.
He needs to work on his technique as others have pointed out (e.g. watch for the splits, don't repeat what AG is saying), but he's definitely got way more potential than Ric.

LSM - this kid has the goods. Incredible to make the podium against that array of talent. 1-2-3 in junior women as well and super to see EVL take the top step - something in the wai (water) here in NZ (mental note drink more wai)

To all the people here saying the live coverage was great, did we watch the same thing?

Half a minute of each run was shot from the ISS, we didn't get to watch the bikeparky turns and the split line transfer. Not even once.

Up there the track even twisted on itself, giving the perfect oportunity to mount a crane and see the riders twice as long from the same spot.

The instant replays when riders where holding on for dear life? Come on, just wait till they cross the line and skip the reactions from team managers and the hot seat going "Oooh!"

Josh did a great job IMO, he can do the rest of the year, or Ric can come back, as long as they let Rachel or Gwinn their space. Tahnee is the future also as I see it
  • 6 0
To be fair, it was better than it’s been — though your points still stand and I totally agree with you.

Main gripe right now: if you’re going to have semis, show some ducking highlights before the finals. So we can catch up on form, injuries, etc. If you’re feeling particularly generous, UCI, go the whole hog and do the same for quali. Coming into finals without a clue how anyone is performing is rubbish.

“Generous UCI”, lol

  • 9 1
Electronic suspension is the future for DH, weather we like it or not. Especially when there is "motorways". No it won't win a race, but in the hands of one of the best riders in the world it's leathal.
  • 13 5
You ask me, I’d say let’s simply have less motorways…
  • 16 0
Or simply say you can't have electronic suspension? For me that's the easy answer, remove it from the equation to level the playing field
  • 9 4
@marshallthewolf: But why? It’s a technical sport, always has been, let the teams innovate.

It’s not like Bruni is winning because he has electronic suspension, he’s winning because he is the best rider.

However, from what I understand it’s not much more a glorified lockout at this stage. Just remove any parts from a downhill track where a “lockout” could be useful, in my humble opinion those shouldn’t be there in the first place.
  • 3 1
@FuzzyL: because as the tech progresses the riders will be able to make use of them everywhere on track. if a track has a fast and rough top and a muddy slow bottom section, it would be an advantage to adjust the suspension settings on-the-fly.
  • 7 2
@ghci7: while I understand the point you’re making, if you take away Loic’s buttons, he’s still going to ride like Loic. Valli having flight attendant isn’t the reason she won by 7 seconds.
  • 8 1
Unless this also means getting rid of the e-edr. If that’s the case, sign me up.
  • 3 0
@grnmachine02: I agree, similar to motogp with adaptive geometry. I just don't think it will make the actual racing more interesting, it will just make it harder for privateers to compete.
  • 2 0
@FuzzyL: keep the motorway, you also need skill to ride it fast. I disagree with DH being just rough shute. The best riders should have rounded skills, that means also pumping, keeping speed, jumps, cornering etc.
  • 8 0

Jackson's face when Kate Mason said that Vali shouldn't take any partying tips from Nina was priceless. Somehow I imagine he was thinking "oh, you have no idea"
  • 3 0
sooo, Vali would've been top 30 in the men...that is insane. awesome race, awesome track, good commentating. still, the hype Rob brought or brings to a racerun is something I miss. Gwin is super but sounds monotone at some points.
  • 5 0
Yeah I agree, listening to him on Hardline a couple of weekends ago was fantastic
  • 3 0
@korev: he 's untouched or maybe even untouchable in bringing excitement to the people in front of the screen.
  • 10 6
If they're going to use all the red bull athletes throughout the broadcast, they should just use another guest commentator.....Rob
  • 7 1
By far the best coverage this year!
  • 3 1
I like hearing Gwin commentate. He's on point and his insight is really cool. I get that Josh is supposed to talk, but yeah, it'd be nice for us to get to listen to Aaron's full sentence without having him get cut off pretty much evert time.

FFs why did Blewitt have to go down!

Go down...Blewitt. Why was a dun roan? Tiz- or 'tisn't. 'Something in the water'

Finn realy set the bar high
  • 70 0
 No that's Dak.
  • 2 0
Yes FINN!!! He DNF'd the semi, so I thought he was gonna miss the final, but he was protected. So how exactly does protection work? Was he protected because of his current standing? or his standing from last year?
  • 5 0
Current standing. Top 3 from last year are protected all year. 4 through 10 change based on current overall.
  • 7 2
Omg get Rachel out of there!!
  • 4 1
@ridedigrepeat: she's sooooo unbearable to hear.
  • 2 0
I'm still freaking out about the current pace of the juniors. Hopefully I'll warm to Josh in commentary, on the fence at the moment. Gwin is awesome but I guess has other commitments.
  • 5 0
 Yeah Muuuush! And Finn!
  • 3 1
Eurosport app and website is still terrible to find easy access to the race.
  • 3 1
 It's easy.
  • 1 0
I used Eurosport for a while this spring before Max launched here. Yeah the website isn't the best, however, still better than the Max website if you want to find anything not using the search field (which luckily does work). Then again HBO has always had the worst display options of the streaming services, with minimal categories and menus to narrow the selection down with.. I really hoped they would've fixed that too now with the Discovery+ merge/ Max launch, but no.
  • 1 0
Eurosport 2 had the race covered live in TV for the second time. I really hope they will continue with this. Watching on TV with possibility of replay is great.
  • 2 2
Massive well done to the Specialized boys. Great work. I wonder if people are going to question those buttons on the bars on this track. Being you needed a firm bike at the top and a soft bike at the bottom.
  • 6 0
I really wonder why other teams are doing it It's not like they don't have the money or know-how
  • 1 0
 *not doing it
  • 9 0
i say time to go back to all analog.
  • 11 1
@Cifer: i think the onboard computers suck. data acquisition, okay fine......... for practice. i say no onboard nothin for qualies, semis, and finals.
  • 10 4
@stacykohut: fully agree. I'm here to watch peeps race bikes! Not tron gravity scooters. It's time to ban electronics in DH
  • 3 1
Anyone knows why Valentina from Colombia did not run?
  • 7 0
 She didn’t qualify through semis
  • 8 6
It's a shame that a team (and a rider) pay travel costs to be able to participate in the World Cup only to get one step away from the final and not be able to participate in it. No one will have seen your sponsor and next year that team will suffer an economic loss.
  • 14 5
@blacktea: Would you prefer participation medals for all?
  • 1 0
She didn’t make it. Same as last week
  • 2 0
@JonnyNorthmore: i would like to see her run
  • 7 1
@blacktea: Well then she needs to ride faster
  • 2 0
This run and his Fort Williams run were just immaculate
  • 2 1
Why does my fantasy team have no points for the week :/ My choices were primo
  • 2 1
Is the RebBull stream only in German? Can't find the language selection
  • 4 0
 RedBull stream?
  • 2 0
@JonnyNorthmore: yeah, RedBull is broadcasting it as well, but apparently only in German. So sound from tiz and video from RB is my solution
  • 1 0
@sorris: where is RedBull broadcasting it?
  • 1 0
@topspeedjunior: I think it's only available in Austria, I saw this mentioned somewhere on social media earlier this week. They have some special deal going on locally, I think it was the same for Leogang last year too.
  • 1 0
 @donimo: ah okay, thanks man!
  • 1 0
I'm from Germany and had to use an Austrian VPN to watch it. (Overlaid it with English commentary tho)
  • 4 3
Oh - whenever I pick someone for my fantasy team, sorry, Jess!

Who's number plate 2 in mens??
  • 2 0
 Goldstone
  • 1 0
@CantClimb: How come he still has it?
  • 3 0
@mtbflow24: top 10 plates are from last year final standings. Think it's just the 10. They are protected riders also.
  • 2 0
@mtbflow24: too 10 last year have permanent numbers for this year

The one thing that separated bruni from being the goat was his ability to ride in the wet and today he just shut that sh*t down
  • 8 2
As the last rider in drying conditions, he did have the best conditions of all the riders though.
  • 13 2
 That wasn’t really ‘the wet’.
  • 2 1
Carlson a big improvement, much more enjoyable watch!

 What happend to Thanee

 Bruni dominance could bore fans
  • 7 3
get rid of those onboard computers.
  • 4 2
Damn no one understands this joke haha
  • 1 0
@pierceklinke: it's a reference to about 10 years ago isn't it? When Gwin kept coming down and taking the win, stopping Bruni from taking his first win multiple times.
  • 1 0
 @matjtom90: urban legend
  • 2 1
@matjtom90: F1 goes through periods of dominance by certain drivers or teams and this is a joke that commonly gets tossed around regarding that
  • 1 0
@pierceklinke: makes sense, they said they same thing when Gwin was dominant .
  • 1 2
I could of sworn i put my fantasy team in on time they used my last weeks one instead wtf !!
  • 5 0
Don't worry we are having a few small issues and the current points are not correct. We should have the correct points for people's round three teams added soon.
  • 2 0
@edspratt: Oh ok cool ! Thanks for the quick update you guys rock !!
  • 5 0
Yah me too! @edspratt can I pm you what my team should've been? Haha.
  • 2 0
@edspratt: thank you. I was wondering why my points weren't added but some peoples have been.
  • 2 3
Insane. Love the coverage. It was great last year and better this year. Awesome Lachie

Think I cursed Ronan by adding him to my fantasy team.

 #banlockout
  • 11 3
 ban onboard computers.
  • 14 6
This needs to get traction. I feel bicycle racing should be a mechanical, mental and physical exercise. Electronic Lockouts effectively remove the compromise everyone needs to make between traction and efficiency in bine setup. Thats wack
  • 6 1
@waldo-jpg: same, electronics should be for data only
  • 2 0
@waldo-jpg: agree but if they win on it and they then want to sell it aint gonna get banned!
  • 2 0
 @gulogulointhearctic: SRAM flight attendant ?
  • 6 1
It would be too hard to ban line spotters. But maybe at least ban ‘in practice timing sections’. I don’t understand how specialised are allowed to put up those timing sticks. If I was another rider and saw them to study a line, I’d kick them over.
  • 3 0
The innovation in suspension design is honestly so sick. There is no single damping tune that will ever work for everything. Look to enduro and you see guys like Richie (also fastest in the world) constantly changing compression settings between stages.

Might not be for everyone, but man am I stoked for this to trickle down more - lower cost, higher performance.

Having this adjustment on the fly, and not having to think about it would be so awesome. You'd be crazy to not want the most performance out of your bike when pushing the sport at the highest level, heck even at my washed-up level I'd take itSmile
