 Californian + Mud = Magic.

Danny and Greg are awesome but Aaron is next level!! Always super stoked when he wins. Only mechanicals hold him back!ยก

I'd like to say something good here, but I'm still speechless at what just happened, so I'll just say, "yeah..."

@fartymarty: I still don't understand how can Gwin be so good on mud ? where does he train for these conditions ?
  • 163 1
 @zede: he trains in confidenceland,
  • 18 8
@zede: Southern California always has a very hardpack base with a light loose dirt on top of it, so it is usually a pretty slippery combo. I am pretty sure it is a similar feel.
  • 42 6
@Vudu74: really???? Similar to flowing streams of mud where you can't even seen out of your goggles?
  • 15 7
@dglobulator: Notice I said "similar feel." Nothing about vision.

Sam Hill has still got this whit his run at champery

Agreed, the man possesses two of the most incredible victory's ever! Also, Claudio, you've got to stop spilling the beans on the colors you can see!

Did you see the grin on Gwin after the win? Happiness earned!
  • 7 1
@newenglandrocks: it almost looked like he was crying. I know I would have been!
  • 9 2
How does Gwin do it? Another stunning performance.

Where did/can someone watch this? I went to redbull and it was nowhere to be found.
  • 5 1
@Crankmiester: go to redbull tv and under the bike section click on the UCI world cup, then simply search for the date of the race and you actually should be able to watch replays from the entire season.

But has no one noticed Finn Iles beat him by .3 of a second???
  • 7 0
Didn't Gwin win USA Nationals in similar conditions on a rocky course?
  • 19 9
@Crankmiester: I missed this because pinkbike didn't actually print the schedule. I read a rant by an idiot who couldn't find Loctite at Home Depot instead of looking at Auto Parts or industrial supply place where the rest of the world looks but I couldn't find anywhere where pinkbike said it's on Saturday at such-and-such a time.

this race got me thinking. so many riders were struggling with just seeing the track, despite the fact that many of them were running tear offs - there just seemed to be no time in the run to use the damn things! I suggest that someone design a wireless system that connects a handlebar mounted button to a tear off system that way no racer ever has to deal with the struggles of taking part of a world cup race run one-handed. just an idea but oakley or some other such brand would surely have enough money to throw at the idea - even if it never hits the public it would be a great idea for wc racers and would stop making companies' tear off systems look so bad in front of such a large audience.
  • 16 1
@morcombemedia: it was an impressive run for finn but the conditions were drastically better for the juniors
  • 22 1
 @zede:
He was up at Snow Summit riding last weekend(waiting in the lift lines like the rest of us), and apart from spending a lot of time on a run basically made up of noting but turns('Turtle'), there was no mud present.
He was there I wanna say the weekend before too-or could've been two weeks before), same conditions.
He's had a LOT of practice in the mud this year during the race weekends however, but so has everybody else.
He's a STUD. Now question about it.
And the dude is a REALLY nice guy.
I have no doubt that anyone who meets him automatically becomes a fan

a win is a freakin win.
  • 22 0
That's because Finn raced on dry ground and Gwin raced at the end in the mud and rain. Gwins qualify time was way faster then Finns race run. @morcombemedia:
  • 10 0
Look at Gwins qualify time which is way faster. Rain and mud slows you down which Finn didn't have to do@stacykohut:

@ryanandrewrogers I remember someone else bringing this up a while ago, and it was determined that its against the UCI rules or something. Anyone out there know for sure?

 @nozes: insane in the brain!!!
  • 11 0
@Vudu74: As someone who has lived both in the Northeast and in Southern California, the riding is absolutely nothing alike in the two places. Terrain, grip, gear, riding style... everything is totally different. I've heard of guys practicing riding over greased PVC pipes to simulate slippery roots in the Northeast.

So, Gwin doesn't ride anything similar to what he rode today when he comes home.

He's just a freak of nature, works harder than everyone else, and is. really good at riding a bike

 @ryanandrewrogers: My 2 thoughts...

1 don't wear goggles if it's raining (you gotta blink lots but it kinda works).

2 (less stupid idea) automated / roller screen that rolls from one side to the other that is constantly running (or remotely operated)
  • 1 1
@therealtylerdurden: and he has a proper sized bike.
  • 3 1
I never cheer on Gwin, until yesterday. Yesterday the whole world wanted him to win. Unbelievable run.
  • 2 0
@fartymarty: I had two big bails because sht got into me eyes. One in the middle of a rockgarden and another when a big splash of mud got into my eyes just before the berm. That was fun. Or maybe not Wink It may work to ride without anything if you ride slow. As far as racing goes, I am not at a world cup race between the tape for verious reasons, like I am unwilling to take risks these guys are taking, that means I would never take off my goggles to keep chasing seconds, and I guess most of people who afgord 5k+ bikes wouldn't Wink

Also, Val Di Sole in dry is slippery as fk too. That loam there is deadly when bone dry
  • 1 0

@therealtylerdurden: I meant the move from Spec to YT. It would be interesting to see Bruni on a different bike - Vergier seems to be a lot faster this year after moving off the Spec. I supppsed Bronsan is still a similar speed altho I think he looks less on the edge.

Altho I do think bigger bikes have allowed some taller guys to go faster - Minnaar is one example.
  • 1 0
@fartymarty: ohhhhhhh that makes a lot more sense. Lol. Cheers!
  • 1 0
@fartymarty: first one was I forgot to take my contacts out all night when I was f*cked up drunk. The next morning one of them was stuck to my eye and ripped the cornea off. First time I had ever worn contacts. Second one was, my daughter was holding a bag of Doritos as I picked her up to cross a road. Somehow in the act of picking her up, the edge of the crisp bag severed my cornea. I could actually see the epithelium concertina'd up under my eyelid. Both very painful after a couple of hours. Had to close my eyes for a couple of weeks in both cases and there was pain every morning for several years. Now if anything gets near my eyes I'm like a gorilla protecting its offspring.

He went faster than Gwin did! I didn't get to catch the race, did conditions deteriorate?

Because that is what you are basically saying by disagreeing with me.
  • 2 0
@rrsport: @rrsport: That comment is almost as dumb as the gesticulating Beiber fans fapping on here about his run being faster than Gwins.

I cant believe what I just saw. Gwin, Hart, Bruni and Bronsan are just on another level. No disrespect to Greg. But just wow
  • 32 0
And Jack Moir. He rode fantastic as well.
  • 20 0
Greg wasn't really losing any time after his crash(?), He definitely had the speed too.
  • 1 0
@src248: not what I saw, he was outside top 5 for sure
  • 1 0
@jimmythehat: assuming he rode as fast after the crash as he would have had he stayed on he would've gone around as fast as Moir (8th), so yes outside the top 5 but still a great run.
  • 20 2
What I don't get is why not televise it live right after the women's podium? It's not like Redbull packed up and left and is coming back in an hours time. Everyone is there in place and still getting paid whether or not it's televised. Just flip the switch damn it! The men are running and you're killing us!

I think they need that hour to make sure their wonky bs media streaming apps will actually work. They sure as hell don't need to censor anything, even though I wish they would. I'm tired of the "moon" crew at every race. We get it, your pants fall down a lot, moving on...
  • 17 2
@LoganKM1982: You do realise the gap is because it's actually live now?

We used to see men immediately after women because they delayed the streaming of the women so it ended halfway through the mens.

Now we see the womens race live and we experience the break between the womens and mens race as it happens in real time.

@LoganKM1982: I bet you're one of those snowflakes that thinks hecklers rock was a disgrace (even tho u weren't there)?
  • 15 3
@Theeeeo: why did they get rid of hecklers rock? I think it's a huge bummer they got rid of it. I think ass slap alleys are fun too. I'm just sick of seeing dudes asses.

Way to play tough though and call someone a snowflake online. I have a feeling in person you'd be whistling a different tune.
  • 5 4
@raging-hippo: that makes sense. I use the hour break to go for a short ride anyways. I have black diamond just out my front door, so... Just venting about wonky software
  • 2 0
@LoganKM1982: No problem. It's something they started this year and the news takes time to reach everyone.

First time they did it there was 200 comments in the race results thread slandering Red Bull for "downtime" because the new system was never communicated.
  • 3 1
English stream not working for me right now, just got some weird slightly triply red bull brain infiltration. But the German stream is working....hoping I can switch to English before the racing starts cus I don't sprechen ze Deutsch real good
  • 3 4
 @LoganKM1982: ngl
I can't whistle m8
  • 2 1
@Theeeeo: I'm just gonna nip this in the bud, I shouldn't of thrown any shade at red bull, streaming media globally is hard. I don't like putting any negativity or hostility out there and that's what I did.

So, at least we can agree than heckler's rock will be sorely missed.

I actually can't whistle either, so there's that too.
  • 3 0
@raging-hippo: we're all too needy and impatient these days aren't we? Louis CK has a great bit about how ridiculous it is to be upset at technology, because for how long it's been around it's basically magic.

That and Thank you Red bull for broadcasting without charging. I've got top ramen to save up for

Tahnee may have won this race, but Rachel is Queen of the Rodeo...how the hell did she ride that out???
  • 17 0
Anyone notice how clean Dean Lucas jersey was on the podium compared to Gwin and Hart shows how incredible the last few runs were.
  • 15 0
I almost went into a coma until Jack Moir hit the course. By the time Gwin was 3/4 of the way down, I was yelling at my PC monitor. That was mental!! I'm also sure Dean Lucas is glad Gwin pulled it off...as much as he wants to win, he wants to earn it proper.
  • 2 0
I couldn't agree more. I kept seeing another Lourdes by the time it was over and an embarrassed Dean Lucas on the top step.
  • 3 0
Yeah, he was noticeably uneasy about where he was and the circumstances around it. He's still young and on the rise, so hopefully he gets a proper win in due time!
  • 15 0
Awesome race so far. Gutted for Hannah, who knows how she would have done without the flat. Still pinned it with the rear puncture! Good on Seagrave pulling it out too.
  • 1 0
Agreed - Those twelve seconds could very well have been made up by a rolling tire and not having to fight it.
  • 2 0
Saw Hannah 3 times on track flat every time.
  • 2 0
She was riding really ballsy to say she had a flat. Testament to her ability mainly and also a little bit the tyre system she's using. Anyone happen to know what she runs in there out of interest. Awesome riding though and you're right it's a real shame about the flat.
  • 2 1
These new Kendas sind seem to really suck, at least one flat per race for the Hannahs or Fayolle.
  • 13 0
slow build up to this amazing climax of a race, Jack Moir really put the race into perspective. Gwin is utterly mesmerising to watch, as well as Danny hart of course. hands were slapping the coffee table during his run!! watching Greg Minnar this season is a pleasure, his experience and consistence is a joy to watch. i just wished he'd take it on the chin a little more when it comes to post race interviews. i can understand how frustrating it would be not to be on the top step after all the training and years of passion for the sport put in for one run. but please, don't be so pissed off during your post race interviews. save it for after. compare gwins's post race interviews and compare..
  • 3 0
With this race, Jack has proven beyond a shadow of doubt that he's a top rider.
  • 17 1
Gwin is an absolute MACHINEEEEEEE!!! How is his speed humanly possible?!
  • 12 0
What an interview of a true competitor. GENUINELY loves the battles and inter competition between his peers and equals. People sometimes give him grief for this and that, but listen to him. He is such a gentlemen... Thanked the FANS for coming and supporting, his fellow competitors - not in a fake pre planned "I'd like to thank all the other competitors..."
Amazing Mr. Gwin. I was always a fan, more so now. At the start hut he has two choices "a) damn this just my luck this year, boo whooooo, b) well, now let's really see how good I am".
Congratulations, you earned everything I'm reading from DH FANS.

How many points are available for qualifying position?

I think they said that Gwin is now 41 points back of Minnaar and the gap between 1st and 2nd is 40 points. I take it that means that if Gwin qualifies above Minnaar and wins, he'll overtake Minnaar no matter his result?

Regarding Gwinn's performance in the wet--I'd guess that any kind of traction-limited conditions, wet or dry, would be pretty decent practice for any other traction-limited conditions. Being able to feel how much grip you've got, and react to that, dance on that fine edge...that's gotta be useful everywhere. Having said that, he does seem to have the most "pure speed" of anyone racing in 2017 (GORN, Greatest Of Right Now), so maybe his dusty SoCal experience is worthless and he's just so good it doesn't matter.
  • 1 0
Amazing race and gratulations to GWin

But what seems ridiculous is that the bike industry develops tons of shit every week month year... new tyres, new standards, paintshops brake boosters and whatever

But when itยดs raining the have no Helmet / Goggle combination who can provide the rider a clear view for 5 min
as I know there are atomatic roll-off googles availble... Use remote on handlebar to trigger of something

  • 1 0
@bigburd: A friend of my father was a so called "weathermaker". He flew through the clouds with a plane and deployed something to condense the water inside them to make it rain. This was like 30 years ago or so. And as @panzer103 mentioned it's used on various ocasions. But this is just punctually and it has an effectt on the local weather. Although this sometimes is confounded with the chemtrail-conspiracy, which is nonsense.

tl;dr:

Wow.. gwin just wow...

  • 8 0
Yah Finn is good. And he'll do great when he moves up to the big leagues. But Gwin put up a 4:02 in qualifying (16 seconds faster than Finn). If Gwin had dry conditions, he most likely would've gone even faster.
