Must Watch: Gee Atherton Rides More Exposed Lines in 'Ridgeline IV: The Dolomites'

Sep 14, 2023
by Ed Spratt

bigquotesWatch the latest spectacular edit in the Ridgeline Series with Gee Atherton, the double World Champion Mountain Biker, world-renowned for his skill and daring on a bike.

"Since the first hour of the first build for the original Ridgeline film, it's been the dream to take this concept to the most amazing places around the world. The potential to find awesome, remote mountain ranges where we can test ourselves to the limit… to really explore what's possible on a bike and how to film the most stunning footage… it's been like a running commentary throughout the entire project." - Gee Atherton.

This film differs from its predecessors in that the team "didn't move a rock." It was about exploring with friends - an adventure into the mountains, where Gee would ride whatever they found, including some of the most unforgiving terrain of the series so far.

And there's pedalling, even if it's at racing speed and inches from a ravine.

Filming took place this August in the Italian Dolomites, where access to riding spots involved four-hour hikes, roped climbs, ladders and abseils. The team was burdened with camera equipment, drones, food supplies and Gee's bike, broken down to frame, bars and wheels to share the load. It was physically and mentally the most demanding week of the series so far, where a sense of adventure and genuine concern for their survival drove the team onwards in search of some of the most incredible scenes they have ever filmed.

Gee said that from the start, he knew that he'd film this edit on board the Atherton AM.170, the latest in the Atherton Bikes range that he designed and manufactured along with his siblings Dan and Rachel Atherton and their close-knit team in Machynlleth, Mid Wales.

Gee said, "It was a no-brainer - the AM.170 is tough enough to withstand being bounced off cliff walls as we hauled it up a cliff on a rope, lighter to hike up the mountain than my DH bike, pedals super well and is enough bike to tackle every inch of the steep and rocky terrain."

He was accompanied by photographer Dan Griffiths (Moonhead Media) and "right-hand man" Jamie Robertson, who had both been with the project from the beginning, but in such perilous terrain, they also involved Brodie Hood, a high altitude and adventure specialist. Brodie is one of the few filmers to fly drones to the top of Everest, an experienced climber and a member of the Lochaber Mountain rescue team.

As Gee put it, "Having Brodie with us kept us alive! But it also meant we could say yes to things we wouldn't have tackled alone… At the end of the film, there's a sequence where I ride down a ridge at sunset; Brodie devised a harness system that meant I could practise controlling my speed while he let out the tension until I got comfortable. The section of the film where I'm riding the slowest, picking my way down the ridge, was actually the most demanding of all.

Thanks guys, stoked you're into it. Agree some sections carried a bit of risk, but that's what myself and the crew are good at, weighing up every element of the danger and doing everything we can to minimise it. Admittedly, things can sometimes go a little wrong, but that's no reason to stop chasing what you love.
  • 138 2
@gee-atherton for halloween you have to dress as Randy Marsh and carry your gigantic balls around in a wheel barrow!
hats off to you sir.

Youre a legend, and a mad man, dont ever change. Big props to you and the crew. It was breathtaking to watch, incredible shots, and spectacular talent all round

I am humbled by you dedication to get radical. May you have many safe miles in your future, Gee!

Know who I'm cheering for at Rampage now!. Amazing film. The amount of sweat and effort that goes into a project like this. I can hardly imagine. Well done.

You are a legend. Insane riding. Such an inspiration as an human being.
  • 11 0
Thanks for continuing with the awesome edit! Your riding style and video are so unique!
  • 12 0
Great stuff Gee. Can't wait to see you back at Rampage.
  • 30 0
It’d be cool to see you guys do like a 15min video on the behind the scenes going through the prep, risk mitigation and planning for these kind of projects
  • 15 0
That's so insane, that its actually excruciating to watch. The payment plan for failure is life ending. I'm throwing skill out the window here as it's something that a rider of your level has and is the norm for you. What's so damn impressive is the mental focus of using that talent and being aware of every possible thing that could go wrong and making it look easy. An example of shutting the brain off and using skill to navigate something I would be nervous to walk. Wow.
  • 9 0
Gee! thank you for keeping the stoke alive. Your passion and hard work is meaningful to the MTB community. Stay safe and healthy out there, looking forward to the next edit!!

 Ssoooo...760mm bars then?

Fook me. Soundtrack really should have been “I’ve got big balls” AC/DC. Done a lot of those trails but on foot and the exposure is amazing. Chapeau.

Your drone operator is top class! No wiggling around, just immersing the viewer in the stunning landscapes. 10/10

P.s. the rider isn't bad either Wink

we get it dude, your bikes are rad, now stop trying to kill yourself

My palms haven’t sweated that much from watching a film since Honnold’s Free Solo.

These shots are more than great! Thank you and your team for creating these pictures. Stunning, breathtaking and addicting.
  • 1 0
Stunning. Was sh.. my pants hiking on the Civetta few weeks ago. What are the mountains involved in the video? Disclaimer: Don't try this at home.
  • 1 0
Absolutely beautiful filming. Stay safe. Love ya bruv!
  • 2 0
At home in the Alps the riding is graspable but not the self-control. Soo exposed a normal rider would have problems riding on flat asphalt! The only thing I missed were some FPV mountain surfing shots, those would have complimented landscape and riding equally (not to take anything away from the classic drone shots, those were gorgeous).
  • 1 0
that was amazing, i have to say i love you carrer perspective and now back to Rampage!!! Respect!!

I've got mixed feelings about this
  • 48 15
Same here. Clip a pedal and you're gone, full stop. I know Gee can ride and deal with risk but is it really worth your life?
  • 133 11
@ullsen: For him it is and he's a big boy who can make big boy decisions on his own.
  • 24 1
My mixed feelings are, should he wear a Red Bull wing suit or not?, when riding that.
  • 4 1
My first thought when I saw Gee's name on the front page.
  • 8 0
@ullsen: German Angst, what's not to love?I also thought about risk vs. reward...
  • 3 0
Same. Gee pushing the limits of self and bike control.
  • 4 0
 Redbull gives you wings...
  • 6 0
My feelings are not really mixed, mostly just the willies I also have to walk a couple sections of the portal due to the exposure
  • 11 0
@ullsen: Have you guys never seen big mountain ski/snowboard segments? So many of those shots are "don't fall or you die", plus the constant threat of triggering and dying in an avalanche
  • 5 2
@ullsen: Exactly what i think and feel. Amazing landscape and images but the risc is too high Gee is looking the holy grail of mtb like many others in other areas like K2 ,titanic dive etc Some can achieve those high lines but some pay with their lives. Live fast die young its not for me and lets hope that will not be the case for Gee and the ones who will folllow him .He already knows that gravity wins when we do a mistake, the fall that he suffered recently could have been the last.In dolomites theres no 2nd chace. But thans to him for his boldness.
  • 24 4
@scott-townes: Of course he's free to make his own "big boy decisions". That doesn't make the decision any wiser, though. But that's just like my opinion, man.
  • 12 8
I really don't think as a community we should be encouraging this kind riding where one slip and the rider will most likely die! Yes its cool to watch but do it enough times and the bill is going to come due!

@bigjp: Have you never heard of Portal trail in Moab? You should, its been around for 30+ years. Its so exposed a few riders have died on it and yet, its constantly promoted to the point of being one of the most legendary trails ever in MTBing.

You assume a vast majority of people don't have common sense or good risk management skills. Your mentality is the same as those who opposed the progression of this sport since the beginning. Freeriding, slopestyle, DH MTBing and bike parks would not exist today if everyone shared your way of thinking.

You have a higher chance of dying in a car accident or biking to work so leaving the house must terrify you. That sounds like a fun life.
  • 7 0
@scott-townes: I agree with you, but you sound all puffy writing this....you.
  • 1 1
@TranceAllez: I don't think California riders know what snow it.. and 200% they have never seen "frozen mind", a clip(short movie) which I wholeheartedly recommend, being the best thing I ever saw on za interwebz. Whatever you ride(bikes, cross, boards, skates, surfs, etc), if that clip doesn't immerses you in what freeriding really is, nothing will. It is not only good, it is spectacularly good!, just open a beer and enjoy it!
  • 1 0
@eugenux: the snow was 2 to 3 meters deep at my house in California last winter. Just saying. I do enjoy the Alps ruggedness, but the east side of the Sierra Nevada range in California has a lot to offer. Again, just saying. It’s a big state.
  • 1 0
@bikedrd: I know it os snowing in Cali as I follow a moto vlogger/reviewer and he lives up in the mountains and I could see it in his videos. I did presume that most of the mtb riding is in the western, oceanic side of the state... where the hills/mountains look on the mellower side. If you guys watch any Chamonix freeride videos you'll understand why I said it is something else. I will continue to suggest *frozen mind* to everyone remotely interested by any type of freeriding in general... and, in my opinion, it is the best type of film ever produced in its category. The last 10 minutes of it, will blow your mind and make your heart flutter at the thought of 10% of what those guys did in the Alps. I cannot reco strong enough! it is an 11 out of 10, with all the respect for Gee and the guys, it is really.. really, something else.
  • 87 2
Gee please can your next video be of you shredding a really nice loamer? Thanks!
  • 58 7
I stopped watching wingsuit videos years ago because I was tired of contributing to guys getting killed. This is the first MTB video that made me start to feel similarly
  • 20 1
Getting that same feeling watching Rampage over the past few years too
  • 6 0
Actually think cliff wingsuiting is actually safer.
  • 2 0
 What about free climbing?
  • 1 0
@yoobee: it's when you climb without artificial help. A fall is caught by a rope ;-)
  • 1 0
@elchomator: Ehm, no. You know what I mean. Free solo of course.

Gee is one of the toughest dudes out there. One smack of the handlebar against the wall and he's gone. Ballsy Incredble! Can't wait to see his line at Rampage - but he'll get robbed.
  • 22 1
Rampage has been more about the lines for years now. Regardless, I don't care how he places, I only care to see what line he creates and seeing him stomp it.

That edit was nuts, I wonder if Gee was inspired by Kilian Bron...

Gee doesn't have the trick most of the other riders have but I'm expecting a big gnarly line that he will ride ride fast.

I hope for his sake that the Ridgeline series comes to an end. I don't often get this disturbed watching death-defying videos but this one hit hard. Maybe because I know what he just recovered from.

Atherton Bikes are the top story of 2023. 2 X world cup wins, a world champs and now one of the biggest edits of the year, all with different riders They're bossing the biggest brands out there

the edit of the year ( or generation) is FUEGO - Kilian Bron
  • 20 0
 Gee just wrote history:
This was the first time on pinkbike, that comments with worries about safety have not been downvoted into oblivion.
A feat that might never be accomplished again.
  • 1 0
Now I'm a bit worried about the upcoming "hold my beer" comment.
  • 21 2

  • 1 1
 What trail is it?
  • 3 0
@toast2266: I'd say it's the via ferrata below the elferkofel...
  • 6 1
@toast2266: it doesn t matter which one it is. Just don t go there with your bike or mountain biking is gonna be banned over there pretty quick
  • 16 0
@Nicolai-ion-rider: yes, good eye,but not only:
I recognisez in order of appearance:
-Sassonger (very recognizable from the Couloir below, the Valscura)
-Marmolada (the slickrock ridge)
-Tofana di mezzo (the big hole in the rock it's a famous spot of the Via Ferrata Aglio)
-Cima Undici (Strada Degli Alpini via Ferrata)
-Croda Fiscalina (Rifugio Pian di Cengia)

indeed the video it's edited so that it looks like one single location, but it's a mash up of so many trails and different mountains that it probably took at least one week to shoot them all...
  • 1 1
Is it on Trailforks then? I don't think riding will be banned as long as people ride responsibly, respectfully, give each other enough room to pass and obviously don't scare each other. I can imagine the drone flying (with a camera) might be banned though because of privacy considerations. People don't like getting caught on camera whilst crapping their pants.
  • 15 0
something to be said for being able to suspend self-preservation for the time it took to film those scenes. Best case scenario, Gee's skills are so off the charts that he felt safe and secure going around those exposed corners. the juice appears to be not worth the squeeze.

Took a bit of inspiration from Kilian Bron and Tom Öhler, I recon ...
  • 6 0
Verry good , seems similar concept to some of the stuff that Tom Oehler, Harald Philipp and Kilian Bron have done . but a step up in intensity. Cool
  • 3 0
Tom, Harald and don't forget the infamous Vertriders from Innsbruck ... they have all ridden incredibly exposed and technical stuff. The big difference here is the speed that Gee is going. That narrows the margin of error down to pretty much nothing in contrast to the slow and deliberate manner I know from Vertrider videos. Huge respect but also mixed feelings.
  • 5 8
@martn: yeah, but those guys are going super slow, doing kinda trial moves and silly nosepresses, a lot of silly, boring nosepreses, at slow speed.

Gee is f*cking riding the bike. It's not even comparable.
Not slow.
Not silly.
  • 2 0
That is exactly what came to my mind, Harald and others have done it years ago and they have done such things on a daily basis. Sure the speed was not the same, but the risk was or still is similar, as they often did not have a supporting team with them. summitride.com/via-ferrata
  • 1 0
@x-rider: nope. Isn't not the same thing.
  • 8 0
Must watch, but hard to watch.
  • 4 0
I actually sat here for 24 hours contemplating if I should watch it. To come back from this monumental injury just to participate in DH WC again, go to Rampage and squeeze that Sequence in between makes me speechless. The need to produce some media output is one thing, the personal need to conquer your demons which he probably had after the accident is another. I understand the feeling that you still got stuff to do, to come back and push yourself to the absolute limit while risking your life just to show the meek like us what can be done if you want it enough. Breathtaking and stunning lines, scenery and quality but holy moses.
  • 3 0
Wow I was surprised to see so many people commenting about how risky this was. I thought this clip was brilliant. He clearly knows his riding abilities and how to mitigate risks better than any keyboard warrior. The fact that this was filmed in advance means he could have stopped at any time, scoped out lines, reridden features, etc., basically anything he needed to take risk out of the equation. If you have ridden anything that's exposed you know you're not actually thinking about the drop-off while you're riding, you're thinking and looking at the trail. If you look at the tree, you will hit the tree. I guess I'm also surprised to see so much risk aversion for this clip and not on Rampage posts, which I think is a way riskier event. It is shown live so you see the raw outtakes as they happen and there are awards on the line so riders are pushing themselves more than they typically would. These comments about risk come from a good place, you care about the guy, and that's respectable. I will also just look at it from the awe-inspiring perspective. This was incredible and hats off to you Gee.
  • 4 0
That last slick rock section is absolutely insane. Having experienced injury going down slabs 1/10th of that size, I go full pucker just watching. Interesting they save that scene till the end.

To be able to overcome the fear and doubt that must creep in after that nearly fatal crash he had not long ago is just insane. Not to mention bouncing back from all the physical trauma. Gee is not a kid anymore either. I separated my shoulder after a crash on a large road gap a few weeks ok. Granted I don't do this for a living but at 43 I'm debating whether or not i want to keep riding at this level or dial it back after a relatively minor injury. I just can't imagine.
  • 3 0
It's a mystery to me how Gee can get back on a bike after such a fatal crash and then do even more extreme things. It won't be big balls alone that make this possible... but that's all speculation. Anyway, a great film from one of the greats!!!
  • 1 1
 It wasn't fatal, luckily.
