Alutech Releases €16,000 eMTB with CNC'd Aluminum Frame

CNC machining has some serious potential to shake up the way mountain bikes are manufactured. Frames could now be manufactured at plants locally, rather than being shipped around the world after production in East Asia. Plus, there's potential for frames made custom to riders with sizing and geometry to precisely suit their needs. There's just one problem at this point, it comes with a cost.

photo

Currently, only a few brands are trying producing frames this way, most notably Atherton Bikes and Moorhuhn using the lugs and tubes method and Pole and ActoFive creating fully CNC'd frames. The latest brand to try the latter method is Alutech. The German brand has produced a CNC version of its eFanes eMTB, and if you thought the other brands listed were expensive then hold on to your hat, because this one is on sale at €16,000 ($19,000 USD).
Details

Frame Material: aluminum
Construction: CNC
Travel: 170mm front and rear
Wheelsize: 29" front / 27.5" rear
Head Angle: 64°
Motor: Shimano with 504Wh internal battery
Weight: 21.15 kg / 46lbs (claimed)
Price: €15,999.90
More info: alutech-cycles.com

So what do you get for the price of a down payment on a house?

The main advantage, Alutech says, is lightness. Shedding weight is still the holy grail for eMTBs and by machining special structures within the aluminum of the frame, the German brand can reduce the amount of material needed vs a conventional aluminum construction. The weight of the full bike is listed at 21.15 kg (46lbs), which isn't exactly what we'd call featherweight, but it is significantly lighter than, for example, the similarly specced Focus Sam2 we recently reviewed. That bike weighs 25.89 kg (57 lbs) but does have a larger capacity battery, which will account for some of that weight.

photo

Alutech claim this bike is made using "aerospace technology" and this gives the bike a smooth finish that you might not normally see on bikes milled fully from aluminum. Apparently these machines have much smaller tolerances than the machines used by other brands and this allows for a smoother finish. The other difference in construction is that Alutech aren't using bonding or titanium bolts to hold their frame halves together, but welding. Alutech uses a shielding gas that allows them to weld at a lower temperature and therefore not distort the material around the join. The weld has been left visible on the top of the downtube, but Alutech has mirror-polished to the top tube to keep the smoothness of the machining and hide the seam.

The 170mm frame is specced as a mullet bike with a 29" wheel in the front and a 27.5" rear wheel. The motor comes from Shimano and it's powered by a 504 Wh battery with the option to upgrade to a 630Wh battery for an extra €250 ($296 USD). Only one spec level is available and it comes with full Fox Factory suspension, a Shimano XTR drivetrain and DT Swiss HXC wheels. Finishing kit comes from Bike Yoke and SQ Lab and there are Maxxis Minion tires fitted front and rear.

The bike is available in medium and large for €15,999.90. More info, here.

 Damn carbon is finally cheaper!!!!!

Not what we meant when we said we wanted carbon bikes to cost the same as aluminum bikes. Damn monkey paw!!

“For that price it should come with a motor” ????
  • 20 1
@scary1: for.that price it should come.with someone to ride it to the top of whatever you want so you can ride it down. You can get a shitload of heli-drops for that price. Just sayin.

Less environmental impact, and more precision, but price is 16,000 Euros. [DaFreerider44 has left the chat]

@DaFreerider44: Yeah at the environmental impact needs to be substantiated.

Yeah, price jokes are fun and all but...
just some weeks ago everybody (and everybody include me!) went bananas for Paul Aston's hyper-costum Nicolai G1, that doesn't even come with a motor! :-D
What do you guys think would be MRSP for that bike?
On Vital's article it was listed at "> 10000".
Let's guess maybe around 12/13K?

16K for this e-bike still sound absurd?
  • 35 2
@Becciu: 16k for any kind of bike is absurd.
  • 6 4
 @danielstutt: I concur.
My point is that mtb crowd craves everyday for 9/10k bikes straight outta Vietnam, and even Aston's Nicolai received nothing but praises despite a MRSP well above 10k (and a weight probably in the same ballpark with some e-bikes :-P).
I just find a little uneven (albeit funny) price jokes on this e-bike as I see it more an exercise in style than a mass market product
  • 7 0
@Becciu: Anything over 6-7k for a bike is absurd. Its a bike that's going to get muddy, scratched, dented, and used up, as all bikes should be.
  • 4 0
@DaFreerider44: the environmental impact is in the trees cut/gold mined to make the stacks of money this thing costs Wink

New e bike or used Ducati... I’ll stick to wheelies and burnouts for that price

C'mon they probably produced only 2 frames wich is chaper than paying for an add on all the mtb Portals

It’s smoother because you’ve set your step-over smaller and you’ve upped the tolerance. You can do this with any professional CNC program / CNC mill - it just takes longer.
  • 21 0
Was going to say that, this lot and Pole haven’t half talked some shite about CNC milling techniques.
  • 7 0
Exactly, for sure accounts for part of the higher cost here. Could easily double or triple machining time chasing those smooth curves.

or just spend more time bench grinding/polishing. Call out whatever surface finish you want. This is standard stuff.
  • 1 0
@Spiral23: Yes and No. 3D printing would be introduced in the rough form stage thereby reducing amount of material to be removed in roughing, semi and finish machining. It would reduce the cycle time for machining but would add another step prior to machining. 3D printing (sintering) is still extremely slow so it would inflate the end customer price of the bike. Yes, titanium powder is available for printing & sintering. The company I work for likely for used the material for that car.

"So what do you get for the price of a down payment on a house?"

Well obviously not the correct length shock bolt
  • 9 5
What a steal! It's 25% of a down payment on a house in Santa Cruz, CA, USA. . .
  • 17 1
@whilgenb: Really? If so, please send links, I will buy a few.
  • 9 0
@kusa: I misread his comment too. He meant 25% of a down payment, so a down payment for a house in Santa Cruz would be 100k.
  • 5 0
Shorter bolts = weight savings. lol
  • 2 0
Extra 4k for the shock bolt, 20k is a nicer figure anyway
  • 14 0
@Ryan2949: If 100k represents 20% down, you might be able to find a small plot in SC to pitch a tent if you’re lucky.
  • 4 0
@whilgenb: to be fair, an FHA loan can get you into a house for only 3.5% so that would be the down payment for approximately a $450k house. Where I'm from that puts you in a 4000’ mansion by on the lake with a hummer in the driveway and private boat dock.

... And perhaps one of these bikes in the garage.
  • 4 0

 @whilgenb: more like 8%. lol. 20% down on a 1.4M house is 280K, not 80K

I went to school for machining and think this is awesome... but even I think it's a waste. Keep the machining for cool brakes and stems.
  • 20 0
 @z-man is 100% right.

This line "It could significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the industry with frames being manufactured at plants locally, rather than being shipped around the world after production in East Asia" is wrong on so many levels and lacks understanding of globalized manufacturing and shipping infrastructures. And that's before we even talk about how hydroforming alum creates a stronger structure than the same thing done with CNC.
  • 6 0
the audacity to associate themselfes with actual innovative additive processes like Atherton Bikes are using is absolutely beyond me. There´s nothing new, efficient or eco-friendly about this, it's just dumb

@mikekazimer: is that a Mike Levy side hustle? Obviously, the snacks he carries are donuts.
  • 39 1
@mikekazimer: Hmmm... you're onto something here. This thing costs $25k CDN. Instead I could buy a regular bike at $5k and have $20k available for my "waterboy". Looking at my stats... I get about 50 rides in a year, average of 2 hours each, so that's 100 hours. I probably only need to pay my waterboy, what, like $20 an hour?? So that's only $2000... still leaves me with $18,000. Hmm what else could waterboy do for me... put my pads on, take them off, wash my bike, personal mechanic, change my flats. I guess he (or she) could also be like my mtb assistant.. kind of like a golf caddy. Ya know, check out lines and drops... recomemd the best course of action. Then I could blame them when I crash or don't clean something. Maybe I'd pay that "waterboy", what... $33 an hour? With the extra work, probably more like 150 hours? That's $5000 a year... for 4 years = $20k... perfect!

Ok, who's up for the job?? (BYOB - Bring your own bike)

Good old "Aerospace" aluminum being transformed on "Aerospace" machines. Why do companies continue to use this dumb marketing speak?

I love badass machined components as much as anyone but this is an exercise in futility and selecting the wrong manufacturing method for the project at hand.

The bike is expensive because of the likely full week of machining time that when into make the components and then additional time to fixture and weld them together.

Cool bike but not sure where the author or the company things this is more environmental friendly or efficient than carbon.

Hydroformed Aluminum is the way to go for lightweight/thin-walled functional organic shapes of any complexity with near minimal material waste.

For 16k I'll be passing this by on my fully modded Beta 500RR-S or KTM 500 EXC.

b-b-b-b-but its teh german engineering. aren't they not the the smartest most cleverest of all?
  • 2 0
@JoshieK: Yes, they still are. This was and is also the reason why certain "developed" countries have stolen a loooooooooooooooooot of patents, documents etc. after the end of the second world war. They have also "taken along" German scientists (Operation Paperclip for example) and are currently still engaged in intensive industrial espionage.

Surely you know the stealth bombers and fighter planes that look like a monoplane, right? Guess who invented this design long before other nations even had a clue how to design or build something like that. There are still plenty of examples that one could list.

Did you know that German was THE language of science until the first world war?

And there is no need to talk about German cars here ;-).
Even though all cars, the newer they are, get more and more shitty. Everything adapts to the low globalisum standard.

However, I have to admit that I am a bit sceptical about this bike, although it is certainly a very interesting concept, apart from the price :-).
  • 1 0
@OswaldWeissbescheid: lol. "look i made a thing using an inefficient manufacturing method and I am selling it for 1 bajillion franks" Sounds like great engineering there. Same with another german bike featured here recently that used 3d printing. Not only was it stupidly overpriced it was a lead brick.

Apparently while germany was designing the Horton 229 the rest of the world was picking their noses? And yet despite all the "plenty of examples that one could list" you chose to reference a plane which never got past the prototype stage from 80 years ago...

I’m about as deep in the CNC machining industry as you can possibly get, career wise. This is just a novelty for people who make more money than they know what to do with. It’s interesting and kind of neat but it’s a bike and over engineered for what’s required our of it. I’d give a hard pass on both purchasing and investing.
  • 4 2
I wouldn't call this engineering. Engineering includes efficient design and construction.
  • 7 4
Hi pinkbike, I’m Juergen, owner of Alutech cycles. Thanks for all the comments…
We love aluminium and forge, hydroform and weld bike frames since 20 years. We believe that we really understand the material and know exactly how to work with it - at least our customers seem to be happy ???? This project is about what is possible, having in mind to reduce the dependency on asia as the bike industries workshop, especially as a small bike brand, too. Local value creation? Short development cycles? New production processes? Quality control? Life cycle/circular economy? That kind of questions are the backdrop for this bike. Like a Porsche 918 Spyder, of course the CNC eFanes is not for everyone, that´s why we offer other (hydroforming) bikes. And, just for you guys: one element of the magic of the frame is that there is a proper bottle mount ????
  • 3 0
I'm all about progression in the bike industry and applaud companies who are trying to change things for the better. I have no doubt the bike will perform well.

I realize the average consumer will not be buying this bike. But hopefully over time the technology will trickle down so the average Joe can afford one.

Thats $25,000 CDN. I'm sure my wife would think up many ways to kill me if I bought one.
  • 4 4
But unlike a porsche 9-1-whatever this bike offers no performance advantage over far cheaper bicycles. I don't know whats in the water in Germany but you seem to have all gone bat shit crazy...
  • 2 3
@Hauck: What technology is trickling down? NC machine has been around since the 1940s. Its not a new technology and is already in use in the bicycle industry and has been for a long time. Just no one before recently was dumb enough to decide to make the whole bike using it.
  • 1 0
What kind of aluminium is it? Pole are using 7075 aluminium and chose to CNC because they couldn't weld it, so I'm interested to know what kind of aluminium you're using and why you're using CNC for it instead of a more traditional manufacturing technique.
  • 3 0
They have a great 3 year lease deal at only $399/month. I did see in small print that you have to put $5k down and only 500 miles a year. Anything over that is $100/mile but if you ride without the motor you might be able to get away with more miles! I'd be all over that if I had good credit...oh well.
  • 3 0
"So what do you get for the price of a down payment on a house?"

Nothing worth 20k. Trying to make their standard mfg processes "special" is weak. Guy"s expression says how many of you are stupid enough to believe this bullshit?

I'm finding it hard to see how CNC is more a more efficient way to build bikes. If it were everyone would do it. Fact is its not.

So true this kind of egregious shit is everything wrong with the world today.

on the other hand of that my mum bought an e-hybrid over summer having not touched her normal bike in well over a year and now rides its 3-4 times a week and has lost weight. the thing with e bikes is its also in the personality and goals of the people who ride them. weight gain can only ever be attributed to consuming more calories than you burn not which style of bike you ride. eat less do more, that's what your friend needs to do.

Good looking ride but i'd never pay that price for an emtb with a rear derailleur. When it has an internal gearbox get back to me........
  • 2 0
Down payment on a house. Bahaha. Not in California, but thanks for rubbing it in.
  • 2 0
16 thousand and they can’t even add a water bottle location. Give me a break! I’ll take my money elsewhere lol
  • 1 1
Can please somebody watch properly?! You can mount a water bottle under the top tube, just have to ride your rear shock "upside down".
  • 2 1
Absolutely ridiculous, you can buy a new Ducati Panigale v2 for this money. Too many idiots with too much money willing to pay these inflated prices.

The normal E-Fanes was at EUR 6800 with RS Ultimate etc.

Strange though, that it has been removed from the website today. (was still available yesterday)
  • 2 0
This is also to make people visit their website.which is not a bad thing cause their normal bikes are really not bad...

What about crawling back to your tiny little hole of sexism and shut the f**k up?!?
  • 3 2
@truckdriver1: allowing women opportunities for employment is sexism? Some women find modeling empowering, and millions of them are essentially doing it for free on social media platforms. It's the proverbial win-win for consumers to have appealing advertising and for models to make money. You seem overly sensitive to the issue.
