The track in Val Di Sole is legendary. Sam Hill would have CRUSHED the field here 2 years ago while leading by 8 secs within 100m of the finish line, when he miscalculated his grip in a corner and went down. This year the track is faster, dryer and looking to be one of the fastest tracks in World Cup history. If it stays dry, it will separate the men from the boys...if you can man-up and stay off the brakes, you'll do well.

Mike Montgomery at The Camp of Champions Mike Montgomery at The Camp of Champions
Where The Tricks Have No Names-

There's a reason Mike Montgomery is so good. It was the last day of The Camp of Champions for 2010 - the burgers, chickens, fish, hot dogs, bratwursts, smokies, bacon, veggies and anything else we could get on a grill were getting BBQ'd by Sergi, Eva, Gord and I. Everyone was gorging on all you can eat free food and drinks from Monster. When the line slacked off I went to see what was going down around "The Compound", instead of just what I could see through the smoke of the cooking meat. You could tell everyone knew there was only hours left to live life to the fullest and live the dream of riding, skating, eating, drinking, having fun with, chilling and hanging with and shooting photos with the pros. The mini ramp as getting sessioned into the ground, the street course was crowded with people skating hard Sting Pong was on, and the tunes were bumping. I wondered why so many people were chilling down by the mulch pit. There was nothing going on. Big mistake on my part... The Mike Montgomery Show was just starting up. Mike Montgomery was creating/unveiling/showing off/delivering/whatever you want to call it... something new. Welcome to the last night of The Camp of Champions... Where the tricks have no names.

Closer Look - Where your bike comes from! Closer Look - Where your bike comes from!
A closer look at what goes into the frames and parts we ride with.

After the Taipei Bike Show and Sea Otter I decided that it was time to build up a new bike for the summer. I had a chance to get a close look at a lot of products in Taipei and I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to use on my bike. Also being in Taiwan and working out of the factory where Banshee Bikes are made I had a unique opportunity to take pictures of my bike during production. I had also lined up a couple of factory visits that fell through at the last minute. Lots of companies do not want pictures taken of their facilities or manufacturing processes. Thankfully I was lucky enough to be invited to the factory where Funn Brakes are made in Taichung, Taiwan. And I made the trip to Vancouver Island to hang out with Greg at the Straitline factory.

Check out my bike being built up from Taiwan to British Columbia,

First day of practice here in Champery has come to an end, and boy, was it wild days. The medevac heli seemed to be constantly in the air over what is fast becoming a legendary world cup track. It's steep, it's gnarly and now that it is bedded in, it is scary fast. Jumps, roots, and loose over hardpack...Champery has it all.

As of this afternoon, it also has rain. It is predicted to rain on and off all night which could make things interesting tomorrow morning when practice kicks off. Qualis are at 1:30pm, by then it should be cleared up and sun is predicted for the rest of the week. Action shots inside,

The Claymore Challenge is always one of my favorite stops throughout the year. Not only is the course super fun, but Highland in general is a blast. It's like that show "Cheers", you know, "where everyone knows your name". You walk in and instantly slap Mark (the owner) a high five, order a smoothie and burrito from Jess in the cafe, then grab a shovel and do some shaping with Slim, Rob and Tom from trail crew. These guys never settle for anything other than 100% so I knew the course was going to be sick.

Sedona - Mecca in the Midst of Time Sedona - Mecca in the Midst of Time
There are many beautiful places in the world, many great places to visit and ride. We've ridden in many beautiful places in Canada and the American North and South West. We've heard about Sedona. Many of the friends we've shared amazing rides with have ridden there and told us we had to go. But it's just that little bit too far. But once you've been, its allure will shorten that distance and draw you in like an addiction.

Sometimes, while filming super shreds going off, you lose sight of exactly what or in this case "Watts" going down. You are so concerned about getting the focus and exposure right you don't notice the ridiculousness of what's going on. Until Gareth Dyer, our Head Coach, who happened to be standing beside me in between runs, said, "It's pretty insane that he can do all those tricks underhanded." Till then I hadn't even noticed, I was too busy concentrating on filming. I get so stoked at the level of riding this summer at "The Compound", that it scares me to think of how hard judging Crankworx is going to be with subtle tricks like this going down.

Spangler Jumps a Top Fuel Drag Car! Spangler Jumps a Top Fuel Drag Car!
While filming for "Here We Go Again," Don Hampton asked Randy Spangler if he had any cool ideas for a section in his upcoming movie. First thing that came to mind was friend Terry Cox and family who own a drag car. Randy thought it would be cool to jump a top fuel drag car while it's doing a fat burnout. Don was totally game. The dangers of jumping a top fuel drag car are deadly. If something goes wrong on the start and the car gets out of control, the heads blow right when Randy is jumping, etc, the result could be fatal. With all this in mind, they were all game to pull off this awesome stunt for the final scene in "Here We Go Again"!

44 Racing Nps 4x Round 3 Race Report

After being rained on at the first two rounds it was a nice surprise for the 44 Racing Team to arrive at a very sunny Redhill Extreme for round 3 of the NPS 4X series. After setting up the now double sized Rockstar Energy pits (we are now doubling up with fellow Rockstar rider Cameron Howard), the riders were left to spend the rest of the day learning the track. Unlike the first two rounds which the riders hadn’t seen before, Redhill was quite a familiar track which has been used for the past couple of years, so we didn’t require too much practice. To save as much energy for the following day's racing the majority of riders chose to chill out in the pits with a can of Rockstar. Race report inside,

Mike Montgomery Creates The California Roll at The Mike Montgomery Creates The California Roll at The Camp of Champions
Mike Montgomery rolled up to The Camp of Champions to learn new tricks, ride with campers in the Whistler Bike Park and "The Compound" at The Camp of Champions - home to the private COC dirt jumps, 365 Sports Big Air Bag and mulch pit. Mike was also stoked to pass on some knowledge to campers. The knowledge to pass on just got a little crazier today. If you wanted to learn new tricks and stay current, it's time to come to camp.

The California Roll is here.

Kicking Horse Bike Park - Trail Crew Update #3 - 2 Kicking Horse Bike Park - Trail Crew Update #3 - 2010
The straight goods on Kicking Horse Bike Park, straight from the trail crew's fingertips.

Monsoon June is machine season at Kicking Horse Bike Park. The last weeks have been bonkers as we have been going gang-busters with trail tuning on the macro, chewing-dirt-with-hydraulic-teeth level. Limited only by our imaginations and management's budgets, we are constantly seeking ways to improve the flow for all levels of riders, which often means rerouting nasty or out-of-character sections. Now we of flesh and blood are following up with rakes and toothbrushes on the micro level.

First Ride of the 2011 Orange Five First Ride of the 2011 Orange Five
It’s that time of year again, change around time. The magazines are bombarded with press releases as the big guys churn out their latest bikes. Whether the changes are important is sometimes difficult to say, but we’ve seen so many clever acronyms, buzz words and so much sales jargon it’s easy to gloss over genuine improvements and reject the hype. So when MBR and Orange wanted to take a different approach I was completely up for seeing how things could be done. MBR’s plan was simple, get the scoop on one of the UK’s most popular trail bikes, and Orange got some video to throw at the internet massif. Yes, they’ll be doing the whole press release deal come today’s official ‘launch’, but if pictures say a thousand words, video…well, video rocks...
