Who will win Red Bull Rampage 2023?

First Runs:

8:55 PDT The event is set to start in the next five minutes.

9:04 PDT Adolf Silva looks to get caught out on a landing and ends his run early. Adolf will have to put everything into his second run later today. Thankfully he looks to be uninjured.

9:07 PDT Adolf Silva tries to test out the rest of his run but bails out while sending a double flip near the bottom. Once again, he looks to be okay and will be trying again later.

9:10 PDT Alex Volokhov is next to drop in for a first run with a steep start to his line.

9:11 PDT Alex Volokhov sets the first clean run, we await the judges' scores.

9:12 PDT Alex Volokhov scores a 72.00

9:14 PDT Talus Turk kicks off the third run of the day.

9:15 PDT Disappointment for Talus Turk as it looks like he has dropped his chain.

9:18 PDT Talus Turk will not get a score for his run but he does sit above Adolf Silva as he completed more of his run.

9:18 PDT Fan favourite Brendan Fairclough will be dropping in next.

9:20 PDT What a run from Brendan Fairclough!

9:23 PDT Brendan Fairclough scores 86.66 and takes the lead.

9:24 PDT Rampage legend Kyle Strait is the fifth rider to drop in.

9:25 PDT Kyle Strait's run is already over after some massive sends.

9:28 PDT Kyle Strait slots into 2nd with a judges score of 73.00

9:29 PDT Bienvenido Aguado Alba had a huge crash earlier in the week but he is here for finals.

9:31 PDT Bienvenido Aguado Alba puts down an incredible ride and starts celebrating before he even gets to the bottom.

9:34 PDT After his run Bienvenido Aguado Alba says in a broadcast interview "I can't be more happy than that."

9:35 PDT The judges score Bienvenido Aguado Alba a 78.83, he will move into 2nd.

9:37 PDT DJ Brandt is next up to tackle his run.

9:38 PDT DJ Brandt includes plenty of rotations and is another rider putting in a solid first run to start the day.

9:43 PDT DJ Brandt gets a score of 73.51 from the judges. DJ Brandt's score places him just ahead of Kyle Strait but a ways behind Bienvenido Aguado Alba and current leader Brendan Fairclough.

9:45 PDT Jaxson Riddle as always lays down a super stylish run although it did seem like there were a couple of mistakes.

9:46 PDT Jaxson Riddle has a few things to think about for run two as he scores a 68.00

9:47 PDT We are over halfway through the first runs as Kurt Sorge drops in.

9:49 PDT Three-time Rampage champ Kurt Sorge sets a first run score of 69.66 and heads into sixth place.

9:50 PDT The current top five are:

1st. Brendan Fairclough: 86.66
2nd. Bienvenido Aguado Alba: 78.83
3rd. DJ Brandt 73.51
4th. Kyle Strait: 73.00
5th. Alex Volokhov: 72.00

9:55 PDT Tom Van Steenbergen starts his run with a huge caveman straight out of the start down the same line Brandon Semenuk took last year.

9:57 PDT Tom Van Steenbergen is another rider with a wild run as he makes it to the bottom after waiting for a long time at the top after the wind picked up.

10:00 PDT Tom Van Steenbergen's first run gets a score of 89.00, he takes the top spot from Brendan Fairclough.

10:03 PDT Cam Zink cuts his run short as he loses his speed after casing a landing. Cam will have to collect his thoughts and go all-out for run two.

10:04 PDT Emil Johansson will be taking on his run next. Emil is an almost unstoppable force in slopestyle, what will he bring today?

10:12 PDT Emil Johansson has to wait for the wind but that doesn't stop him from sending some huge slopestyle tricks.

10:14 PDT Emil Johansson scores an 82.83, taking third place behind Brendan Fairclough.

10:15 PDT Clemens Kaudela will be dropping in next as we near the final riders for the first runs.

10:19 PDT Clemens Kaudela just comes up short near the top of his run. Luckily he is unhurt and will get ready for a second run later today.

10:22 PDT Carson Storch kicks off the final four riders who were pre-qualified for Rampage based on last year's results.

10:25 PDT A massive run from Carson Storch. It will be interesting to see how it stacks up against the current top run from Tom Van Steenbergen.

10:28 PDT Carson Storch takes 2nd place as he falls short of the 89.00 given to Tom Van Steenbergen.

10:29 PDT Rampage fifth-place regular Thomas Genon will be next up for a first run.

10:33 PDT Thomas Genon packs in a run full of tricks and scores a 76.83.

10:34 PDT Reed Boggs starts off the final two first runs.

10:38 PDT Reed Boggs is given a score of 76.23, good enough for seventh place.

10:39 PDT We could be in for something special now as Szymon Godziek closes out the first runs.

10:41 PDT Szymon Godziek takes a big impact after landing wide in the run-up to the canyon gap. We hope Szymon is doing okay after that crash.

Standings After Run 1:

1st. Tom Van Steenbergen: 89
2nd. Carson Storch: 87.00
3rd. Brendan Fairclough: 86.66
4th. Emil Johansson: 82.83

Second Runs:

10:58 PDT Adolf Silva starts off the second runs after he crashed earlier today.

10:59 PDT Adolf Silva crashes again as he is caught out by the wind and will not score highly today.

11:03 PDT Adolf Silva ends this year's event with a 51.33

11:05 PDT Talus Turk has a near-flawless run after crashing out in his first run. It will be interesting to see what this one scores.

11:09 PDT Talus Turk goes into fourth place at his first Rampage with a score of 84.00

11:12 PDT Cam Zink recreates his iconic flip as he keeps it clean to the bottom.

11:15 PDT Cam Zink scores a huge 95.00

11:18 PDT Clemens Kaudela has a huge crash, we hope he is okay after that big impact.

11:21 PDT It's great to see Clemens Kaudela up on his feet and walking away from that one.

11:28 PDT Jaxson Riddle got a 65.66 so his score of 68.00 from run one remains.

11:34 PDT Kyle Strait steps it up for his second run and scores an 83.58 to move into sixth place.

11:38 PDT Reed Boggs bumps his score by 0.5 to 76.73.

11:42 PDT Thomas Genon also doesn't move his position as his new score of 77.41 won't make a change to the standings.

11:42 PDT After an incredible first run Bienvenido Aguado Alba is back at the top to try and go higher than fifth place.

11:44 PDT Bienvenido Aguado Alba somehow manages to go bigger for run two. What will the judges give this run compared to his previous score of 78.83?

11:45 PDT Bienvenido Aguado Alba does not change position with a score of 79.44.

11:49 PDT Emil Johansson goes down right at the end of an impressive second run.

11:52 PDT Tom Van Steenbergen and Carson Storch are happy with their scores so Cam Zink wins the 2023 Red Bull Rampage.

 A senseless, brutal robbery. WTF
  • 42 1
I want Brenfest next year, Brendog and the darkfest boys. In the Utah dessert, just riding and building some gnarly shit. The real rampage. Fuck whatever this has become
  • 122 2
What a joke. Brendog made an impossible huge freeride jump (one of the most technical ever made) for himself an sent it. One of the most technical jumps in history. And he needed to find it on the hill and make it work. Nobody else came even near this. Everybody there can backflips on motorways.
He made it and sent it.
He also did the battleship, he had one of the most insane freeride rides/lines in history.
This is not freeride.
  • 13 0
If Bren throws another trick on one of those lower jumps he might just have this.

@hgardner: Utah dessert has the tastiest lines.

@delaneydh: brenog is not going to do a second run, why would he risk it another time, the run was perfect
  • 8 0
@mothi: Yeah wouldn't blame him if he doesn't. Big respect. Edit: after Zinks score, he definitely shouldn't go again.
  • 25 0
@dvakistojita: I agree. Not only was his riding and line top notch, but he showed an incredible level of professionalism, focus, and experience with his whole approach; from build, to practice, to throw down. He's my favorite for sure.

@othello: Nobody cares about the judges they’re pretty pointless at this point. The peoples votes what really matters and that’s the run that always gets remembered. No hate towards the judges at all they’ve certainly got their work cut out for them with some of the absolute insane runs everyone’s putting down.

People who focus on the points are clowns. Its about where riders place and the judges who are all legendary freeriders did it right! This was the best run and judged Rampage of all time. That was fucking amazing. Congrats to all the riders and I hope Godziek has a quick recovery.
  • 11 0
@sidekicksjn: Time for AI to start judging these events. The sheer robberies are getting out of hand
  • 13 0
@scott-townes: I agree that this was the best Rampage in ages, but disagree about the judging.
I think the strength of opinion shows that many agree that some riders were underscored, and that there should perhaps be a more visible scoring process for people to understand.
  • 15 8
It's okay to hold more than two thoughts in your mind at once. You're allowed to think "I think the direction that Fairclough is pushing the sport is the pinnacle of what the spirit of freeride is, and I wish he'd won, and to say "holy f*cking shit, Zinks run was insane"

Sometimes its tough to say who really deserved the win the most at RBR when there are so many incredible runs. This one had so many incredible runs, but Zinks was pretty clearly deserving. Speed management on jumps that size with that much steepness are INCREDIBLY technical with massive consequences, and getting it so right that he can throw tricks on it is amazing, in much the same way Faircloughs backflip across the canyon was amazing.

And it's okay to think both are cool. You don't have to decide which one you like more and then talk about how the other type is a joke.
  • 15 1
@t-swing: best rampage in years and it’s not like they’ve been bad. The battle ship section and Brendon’s canyon gap is what I’ll remember it for.

I watched to see Brendog, to check one of my idols is still alive after his f*cking crazy line choices.

I’m now back to never watching this or Crankworx horseshit again.

Unless Brendog comes back (but I hope he doesn’t for his own health and family).

  • 2 0
 Brendog got Norbs!
  • 18 4
Brendog should have won. No disrespect to Mr. Zink, but a run from 10-13years ago on pretty much the same features that are already there should not win today. Brendog and his crew created entirely new lines with huge, gnarly, tech features. He greased it first go. What the f*ck?

@bikesandfun: they are all friends with the judges.
  • 1 2
@snomaster: brendan had a complete run, bienve had a trick. The trick and 2 jumps before it were MENTAL, but did not deserve the win imo. His top section was probably the most boring on the mountain, and he didn’t do much to excite in the bottom section either.
  • 1 2
That’s some tinfoil hat type sh*t. I believe Bienve’s run was underrated but Brendog’s run was average. The only notable thing was the gap and the battleship and he didn’t trick.
  • 143 3
I like the bit where the judges vote for their mates.
  • 49 1
Yeah great to see everyone cheering like crazy in the judges booth and then quickly giving a massive top score, after spending a good while "meticulously analyzing" how to score some other runs. I mean yeah it was a great run, but after seeing the score I was thinking where exactly the 95 suddenly came from.
  • 9 0
@donimo: Yeah I would've loved to see some other judge reactions, particularly Bienve and some other off-the-radar guys.

Zink did not deserve the win. He also came off as an entitled a*shole in that interview. Great rampage, terrible judging, better luck next year Brendog and Bienve. Healing vibes to Szymon, that was shaping up to be a winner

 Great riding*

I don't disagree that we got the wrong winner, but how did Zink come off as an a**hole?
  • 14 3
@BagelMan: No idea what interview that guy was watching, he was quite the opposite.
  • 48 3
@BagelMan: “I should have won here 5 or 6 times, but the judges have obviously thought differently.” Zink is a great rider, he’s been underscored in the past a couple of times, but to say something like that after being handed a questionable win against some of the best runs rampage has ever seen is mega-entitled.
  • 26 0
If I'm Brendog or Bienve I'm not returning.
  • 6 1
@SillyTadpole: I understood it differently. I thought he was saying that he felt he could have won 7 or 8 times but that he kept making mistakes
  • 5 1
@BagelMan: that’s a very fair take on it, I don’t necessarily agree but I can see that side. Regardless it comes second to the riding, Zink deserved 3rd or 4th but it just wasn’t there for me
  • 4 3
@SillyTadpole: Zink is cocky, that's why.. He shouldn't have even been there. Neither should have Strait, or Sorge. Move the hell over and let in the flesh blood. Instead they keep offering free wins to their mates and screwing the outsiders

  • 45 2
and now a 95 for Zink. Do not understand anything with the judging. Killer run for Zink, but seems like a super high score after all the low scoring.
  • 43 1
The judging at this event has consistently been flawed. Maybe judging should be held off until all runs are complete so they can be reviewed, debated and accurately placed.
  • 36 0
Yup I say this every year. Let all riders do their first run, then announce the scores. This give the judges ability to adjust some after they've seen everyone. Then second run can be live scored.

 This.

No 2nd run from Brendog? I'm almost relieved, I didn't want to see dude die.

But yeah both Brendog and Bienve absolutely f*cking robbed. I love Zink but that wasn't a winning run.\

Just went back to watch the scoring on Kyle and Cam's runs from 2013... Kyle was 1st with a very similar run to today, his score was 87.5, McGazza was second with the canyon gap backflip, amongst other flips with a score of 86.75. Cam Zink pulled an apparently similar run to this year's huge backflip, and got 3rd with an 84.75 . This year the inflation rate is no joke .

Stopped watching after TVS scored more in his first run doing stuff that has been done before by others than BF. Just thought oh well its going to be the usual inexplicable judging. Not surprised at all when I've seen the final standings.
  • 6 0
That's why racing is and always will be superior as a competition. The clock is never biased. Freeride and slopestyle are fun, but competitions that are judged are fundamentally flawed, prone to corruption and favouritism and have been forever.

Last year Lacondeguy, this year Bienve, Brenndog.. it seems like the judges have their scores filled in before the run.. I can understand in Bienve's case that it was incredibily stupid not to finish the run, but yeah after pulling off those hits, try to keep your emotions in check, his stuff was insane.
  • 8 0
 Bienve got robbed! (and norbs).
  • 6 1
Redemption wins suck. Rampage sold it's soul to slopestyle. Opening up new big mountain lines with ridiculous features meant nothing to the judges. It's been a while since the event ran so smooth. Brendog is king.

  • 5 0
Come now Plaintiffs, People of Earth, and complain of Defendant, Red Bull, and pray the Court grant them judgment, and for cause of action would show the following, BRENDOG WAS ROBBED
  • 4 0
I've been watching Rampage since the start. I love the gnarly lines and huge, styled out tricks. I don't care us much about the scores and podium. If I could change one thing it would be that the first runs are scored against each other and the scores wouldn't be posted until after the last rider. Then give everyone who crashed out the option of a second run for the fans, followed by the top five scores from the first round do a second run for the podium. This would also speed up the second round and hopefully give the top five a second run on windy days.
  • 5 1
How come Semenuk lays down the same sort of lines/tricks as Emil and wins. 4 times and Emil doesn’t come close despite being the most technically perfect rider on the hill?

Bienve should have won hands down. Insane runs. First ever front flip, twice, and gets 8th? What the f*ck.

Oh wait- neither are American or America’s closest neighbour.

Boycott the f*cking event- it’s turned into predictable wank for the last 3 years.

I have complicated and admittedly uneducated thoughts about judging that relies on them all discussing scoring (has there even been a in depth explanation given?).
What is wrong with all the judges scoring in isolation and their scores being tallied up. I'm sure the judges are experienced and able do their work on their own without teacher standing over them. They have a Head Judge and his role seems unclear - hopefully it's to spot bias and not to influence. All modern 'extreme' comps seem to have this method. As it's not a completely transparent process my BS meter twitches slightly. All sports like this are subjective - but - if it's a "big-mountain freeride event" maybe let the riders know what style of lines will be rewarded. There were definitely riders that rode in the spirit of the event and those that could be riding off wooden structures. And all at an exponentially higher level of difficultly than I could imagine doing.
As I said - complicated thoughts/ramblings…

Probably an unpopular opinion, however, Rampage should be about the most gnarly exposed and risky line on the hill, it should be about the rider vs the terrain. I dont think tricks should tricks should factor greatly. They should only be the deciding factor where two equally epic runs differ.

  • 2 0
Why don't they just do a whole weekend event and split the riders into two groups and have more riders. One day can be the slopestyle/trick crowd and the other can be the technical/downhill crowd of riders. Judges can score accordingly and award two winners. All that work, hype, and build up for a quick few hours and controversial judging/scores. Maybe even add a women's category in there too, as they keep hinting at something happening with that soon anyway.

What I don't understand is that most of judges (josh, claw, kyle, greg, randy) know how it feels to get robbed. AND still they can't get the judging right. All the expirience over the years at Rampage, amazing technology we have these days to look at the runs. Still every year there are some big fu*k up's when it comes to juding the riders.

  • 2 1
 Other than the final scores.

They have a week? to coordinate cameracrews and positioning, they are 'presumably' in contact with riders and building crews to understand their lines and tricks.

How come the camerawork and the way things are displayed are always in the mehhhhh part of quality.

It's one of the biggest events in this category on behalf of Red Bull, but it looks every year like they do it for the first time.

Podium or not. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed following brendog, Ollie and deaks throughout the build and every year they give us a good show! Those guys are doing it right and thats why the people are a bit upset at the scores. But I’m more stoked on not only brendog doing a full run but how clean he hit that line. That was impressive!
  • 2 1
a 95 is a straight up joke, even when Emil scores that high on slopestyle guy is jam packing everything into a run, this instantly makes Rampage lose an insane amount of credibility (barely had any left) and honestly i feel bad for Zink because he actually is a legend but this was an embarassing retirement prize
  • 2 0
call me Hunter S Thompson, but I way prefer the build up to this party, than the actual party which was once again affected by mates voting for mates. Brendog got shafted, again..

A few things to say . . . The judging is very hard to follow or workout . . . Some riders were robbed . . . Warner Bros Rampage anyone? . . . And I bet Scott Townes is bright red and spits when They talk!
  • 1 0
They have to finally decide. What do they want from the athletes? gnarly and exposed lines or slopstyle madness?
If i say that Bienve was robbed i should also admit that Cam Zink should have won at least another 3-4 Rampages. If i accept that Brendan was deserving to win then i could say that Riddle was also deserved a first place.
Totally subjective desicions and scoring beyond reason.
But SOOOOO stoked for Zink. Deserved it to the last cent.
  • 1 0
Brendan and Bienvenido- something doesn’t seem right with scores. Can we just let the riders ride without 000.00% judgment? Especially when the judges scoring don’t have direct experience doing a lot of the modern Rampage lines. Do advertisers need a winner to sell stuff? Does Rampage need a #1 rider to distill all the action into a story when the event is 4+ hours?
I remember the inspirational riders most.
  • 1 0
That was really fun. For whatever reason the 3 most memorable runs were Brendog, Bienve, and Zink. I don't remember 2nd and 3rd all that much besides the drop in. I don't fault the language of the riders as they are pumped with adrenaline and relief, but as someone who watches races with my 4 year old I wish the broadcast had a slightly better handle on that.
  • 3 1
Explain to me how Brendog gets 86 and Zink get 95.... The 95 is so erroneous it makes no sense at all. Unless it was because it was towards the end of the event and they had been drinking... a lot.
  • 1 0
Why not do away with judges and enjoy it for what it is. Top level riders with unique skills in DH , free ride slopestyle taking on some of the hardest terrain in the world. We could still have awards riders awards voted for by the riders participating , people’s choices categories could be broke down 1st time lines vs established lines. Still a great watch and healing vibes to the guys who crashed.

  • 4 5
I agree that Cam was over-scored (slightly) but still think his overall run was the best. BrenDog got robbed but I think lack of variety of tricks really hurts him. I think he needs to add a 360 to have a chance to win. Nobody here talking about Emil but I think he was under-scored. The back-to-back whips were so gnarly (you could see on his second run just how gnarly when he didn't land the first one perfectly). One other thing to consider is that linked tricks score higher (Cam's backflip scored massive because he had to link it with the previous tricks and it was very high speed).

My top 3: (1) Zink, (2) BrenDog (3) Emil
  • 6 9
@ScandiumRider: Nah, Zink didn't deserve anything close.
  • 1 0
No way in hell does Emil come in above TVS and Bienve. No way. He used Semenuk's line and took out the gnarliest part of it. He's a trick guy and his tricks were not clean. His run was good, not great. He's an impressive rider and my feeling is that if he keeps at this he will get at least 1 rampage run. He clearly has the ability to ride big stuff and do big tricks. I think he was appropriate placed.
