Late spring storms have been rolling through Southwestern B.C. along with cooler than average temperatures amassing snow at lower elevates, especially the Whistler Valley, and that meant a delayed opening for the bike park. One week later than scheduled, the hard-working trail crew had cleared snow from the trails and buffed out what they could to fire up the chairlift for eagerly awaiting mountain bikers. Those single-digit temperatures and muddy trails limited the lineups to only the brave, but the weather did progress throughout the weekend and the trails quickly dried from their sticky peanut butter state - even lower A-Line opened late Friday evening.
Our professional data acquisition system, aka
Jacob Tooke (thanks mate!), greeted lap-hungry riders and recorded the stats of the first one hundred riders that he came across. The male to female ratio still hovers around four to one, which is not too far off of the 71-29% split of flat pedals to clipless. 27.5" bikes were still the most common, but are losing ground to the ever-popular 29" enduro weapons. Mixed-wheeled machines do seem to be here to stay, at least in the gravity-oriented segment, and have gained ground - up to 10%.
The usual popular brands made their appearances, however, there were also some outliers in the field. Norco took the top spot with their Aurum models, followed closely by the famous "looks like a Session" from Trek. Fox (Marzocchi) suspension dominated both front and rear components, followed closely by RockShox, although there were some smaller players, like Cane Creek, DVO, SR Suntour, EXT, and Ohlins that trickled in on either end of the bikes. SRAM owned the drivetrain and brake segments, and at no surprise, Maxxis owned the tire department with massive numbers; 75% front and 74% rear, where tubeless setups were still the most popular.

Be safe be well,
Incognito Robin
Hopefully PB can pick up some of the Beta staff if it goes as suggested.
I am always curious to see where the best value is, and it's never at these excessive builds. I will always get more excited at a prospect of a great bike for a reasonable amount of money than these flashy "what would happen if money was no object" builds.
I'm sure Pinkbike is also feeling the pressure now, but I hope they will remain focused on what they do best, rather than trying to chase after Beta's failed business model.
The most average rider would be a male wearing a Troy Lee Designs helmet, no neck brace, and Fox body armour/ knee pads
- Matt Dennison 2013
I've built up my old Session 10 a couple of weeks ago, now as a 27.5/26" mullet. It is heavy, but is super nimble compared to my 29er. Plows through everything as well.
Complete bike from Trek was around 46lbs iirc. My was 44lbs with a 2005 Dorado (also heavy af
Yeah, and it was easier to bottom them out during braking, than on 12ft hucks to flat. Oh the good ol' days...
I boiled my Sram codes / elixir brakes in Chatel, Champery, Morzine and Morgins. The elixirs were super dangerous and unreliable.
Still have my 2008 Shimano Saint still work amazingly well and super reliable.

Just needed Remy Morton to be there to throw off the data. 24/26 mullet babyyy!!
BETA being killed..am I the only worried about whats going to happen to PB?

But in this case the closures were specifically related to print magazines. Pinkbike isn’t in danger… they ARE the danger.
This feels like a paywall looming on Pinkbike
Not that I pay close attention, but the only person I know of getting paralyzed at the local bike park was injured in the back, the neck brace would have done no good.
So the argument in my mind is I could have a full roll cage and 5 point harness in my car, but, is it worth it?
I rarely wear any protection at all, other than a 3/4 helmet and sometimes gloves. Though I did buy some stuff with the intention of wearing it at certain places, we'll see if I follow through.
Please...
but i cant blame em when proper bikes are 2-3k and all sold out.
And 29'ers, holy cow thats a big jump, 12% - biggest ever jump for "in favour of 29" - i think if more people got to try a proper mullet bike, We'd see alot more than only 10% but that did have an increase of 8%
Also why did clipless jump 14%? Im guessing more Pro's there this year
And what about the people who don't wear pads or helmet? Always one of them every time I'm at the park
Can't afford a new 29" bike, don't like clipless on gravity oriented riding, but love the increased popularity of MTB amongst women though!
Rental fleet = Norco Aurums , DT Swiss rims + Sram brakes. If we excluded the rental fleet, we would get a better idea of the actual bikes people bring to the bike park....
I wonder about 2.0% Chainless. Does that mean no chain? or belt drive? or shaft drive?
Is there a brand called Chainless?
Thanks for the clarification.
Kinda like an adult strider... but with a place to put your feet
FOX 40 increased its market share by 100% p.a. for the past years... seems like in 2020 nobody liked them?
Commencal Supreme 4.21%
GT Fury Commencal Supreme 4.21%
Kona Process 4.21%
Otherwise it seems people are getting better stuff, which is good
Excellent article btw!
Come on Pinkbike, it's 2022, you know this isn't correct....
Where can I do so?
Yes. Anything 4-Piston Shimano( ie Saint, XT, XTR, Zee,etc), or Magura MT 7 & MT 5 .
They probably work OK for people who ride on terrain without much vert and without sustained steep gradients.
Codes probably work OK for people who ride on terrain without much vert and without sustained steep gradients.
Codes can't hold power (what little they had to begin with) for more than 25% of a DH run around these parts
Hey man just cause you suck, and ride pathetic terrain doesn't mean you need to take it out on those around you.
Codes are actually dangerous to use around these parts because we have steep terrain with long, sustained descents. They lack the upfront power and fade within a minute or two of descending.
I'm not sure what your bike park insecurity/complex is about, but I wish I rode more park! The closest one is 4 hours away and haven't ridden on for several years...
There’s fast lads and gnarly trails everywhere and you’ll be fine on ether brake.
Your reading comprehension is incredibly, incredibly low. There isn't much more for me to say. We've flogged this horse ad nauseum. We're just circling the drain given your fixation on bike parks, light switches, and world champions. I hate to say it, but I've met my shitty pinkbike troll match.
I think if you understood the reality of DH riders in big, steep, mountainous terrain, then maybe you'd be singing a different tune. But you don't, because you're from Lancaster puttering around on walking paths with crappy brakes
There are some great Canadian riders on the WC currently... Finn Iles, Jackson Goldstone, Gracie Hemstreet? All have wins and/or podiums this season already. All of whom grew up in a bike park btw... Also there was a guy named Steve from somewhere in BC... If recall, he may have won something called the World Cup Championship?
I'm sure you've got some greasy tech readily available to you and I'm sure that it can be very challenging. But one thing you don't have are 1000m+ sustained descents on 50%+ sustained gradients. If you did, you'd realize that your Codes will inevitably fade, blow up, then stop working completely... Come on out to BC, see for yourself, and I'm sure you'll be guzzling the shimano/magura kool-aid in no time whatsoever.
Where can I do so?
Eat a dlck. When your family is in the Fokking hospital after that shot, you're not a lemming little cokk licker like you and @Bikes-are-awesome .
Eat some peanuts
