Della Downhill - Lillooet, BC Della Downhill - Lillooet, BC
The Della Creek descent is a shuttleable 1100m (3500 ft) downhill in Lillooet.

More importantly for the freeride/ downhill crowd, Della can be shuttled on a pretty good gravel road. Major hazards are wild horses and a rock slide that presents a bit of a navigation hurdle at the 1250m elevation mark.

Two lazy down-hillers take on Moab… Two lazy down-hillers take on Moab…
Source: Kat Popma

This past spring my husband and I made the impromptu decision to take a coveted week off of work and road trip to Utah. Neither of us had been there before, but we had heard enough stories to peak our interest about little place called Moab, a desert town a few hours south of Salt Lake City. What makes Moab such an amazing destination is its terrain. The distinctive red rock is recognizable in countless well-known mountain bike photos. Set in between two National Parks, the town is surrounded by bright red, iron-rich sandstone carved into smooth, intricate shapes by the sometimes ferocious winds. The rock, like a fine-grain sandpaper, provides unbelievable traction and gives tires, feet and finger-tips an uncanny ability to climb (and descend) otherwise treacherous rock faces. RockGardn's 'Pearl' FR/DH Helmet - Review RockGardn's 'Pearl' FR/DH Helmet - Review
I'd like to introduce you all to a small brand named 'RockGardn', operated by a husband and wife in Southern California. I first noticed the brand years ago when they originally sponsored a local NW DH Shop Team named 'Ride-This' and a few of the riders where sporting the protective gear, while proving it works with huge crashes. I personally experienced a really bad crash in Port Angeles 2 years ago and if it wasn't for all the RockGardn protection I had on, I'd be a vegetable in a wheelchair. Hard hits can do serious body damage and ruin seasons. These last few weeks I've heard about several riders getting hurt ranging from top pro's to weekend warriors. You can never have enough protection on in every crashing situation. The trick is to be prepared for the worse. It's part of racing and accepting the risks.

Third Annual Pure 32 Sale. Canada's only endurance bike sale lights up Calgary, Alberta.

Some of us out there like to use their endurance strictly for riding purposes. Whether this means a huge fire road grunt before the good stuff on Moose Mountain or entering a crazy downhill race with climbing in it on a French glacier, that's up to you. However here at Pure Cycle we have taken this one step further! We are now using our endurance to sell bikes to all our great customers. Back in 2008 we were tossing ideas around for a cool summer sale or some kind of festival event and we decided the only way to really test our might was to sell bikes and all the trimmings for 32 hours non-stop.

Cardio vs. Endurance Training Cardio vs. Endurance Training
Let me ask you a question - Do you want better cardio? Or do you want to be able to ride harder, faster and longer on the trail? Think these two goals are the same thing? Perhaps not…

The problem lies in the confusion caused by the terms "cardio training" and "endurance training" being used interchangeably. The truth is that they mean entirely different things. Understanding this difference is important in order to know what you really need to get to the next level.

Kicking Horse Bike Park - Trail Crew Update #2 - 2 Kicking Horse Bike Park - Trail Crew Update #2 - 2010
The straight goods on Kicking Horse Bike Park, straight from the trail crew's fingertips.

When it was announced that Kicking Horse Bike Park would offer up the first two days of the season for free to locals, we immediately checked the weather forecast and our hearts missed a beat or two. Rain. And plenty of it two days before we opened with all freshly groomed trails. Rain and tires are like fans and turds - the mix makes a nasty mess. With baited breath we put our faith into two things: the fallibility of weather forecasts, and all the drainage efforts we have put in during the past years. Was our faith rewarded? Details inside,

Two in row! It’s hard to believe we actually made it this far without racing in the rain. Maybe I’m just a pessimistic grump, but call me old fashioned, I like to race in the sun! Sure rain and mud call for mental sharpness, determination and advanced skills… but they are also synonymous of muddy bikes, cold weather, dampness, drenched shoes and bucket loads of mud in the washing machine (just ask the condo cleanup crew…yikes!). So I stand behind my statement: I like racing in the sun!

Gravity East Round 2 Report/Results Gravity East Round 2 Report/Results
*Updated with photos

A record field of entries came to aptly-named Champion Pennsylvania this weekend for the Seven Springs Downhill, round two of the 2010 Gravity East Series presented by Voncooper Productions. The fast, flowing course at Seven Springs Resort is characterized by a series of berms and banked corner, putting a premium on cornering ability. The course was in mint condition throughout Saturday practice, and a light rain overnight only added to the tackiness of the surface for Sunday’s race. But while the rain improved traction on most of the track, conditions in the infamous rock garden went the other way as slick rocks caused multiple falls.

Source: David Peacock

The introduction is an essential component of establishing any relationship. For you, the reader, this paragraph will decide whether or not you finish reading; last week my introduction to Rilor Wilderness was essentially unprecedented. Driving in, rain pouring, we assumed that there wouldn’t be much riding to be had, especially given our 8 PM ETA. Contrary to our expectations, the first ultimatum proposed upon arrival was, “Dinner, or ride?” It is a decision that riders everywhere face everyday. Naturally, we opted for the latter, eager to get our first taste of Riley McIntosh’s summer playground.

Lone Wolf Productions has been created to put riders back in charge of creating their own video segments, and to follow some of the world’s best riders as they do their thing. The idea behind the site was simple. Give professional riders a Go Pro camera set up, let them decide what to shoot, and finish it up with some high end editing. This concept is a welcome one with most riders because it takes the pressure off that is felt when working with a full film crew and allows riders to get back to where they started…shooting with their friends and having fun riding their bikes.

North Shore Bike Fest - guided rides with Endless North Shore Bike Fest - guided rides with Endless Biking
For the North Shore Bike Fest, Endless Biking provided guided rides (with the assistance of NSRide) through out the weekend. Endless Biking (or EB/Endless) is basically a full-service company for mountain-biking trail riding offering "Camps: Clinics, Rentals, Training: Tours". Many first time visitors to the Shore don't know their way around the trails, don't have the time to really explore, are unfamiliar with riding in hyper-technical terrain, want to improve their skills or perhaps, a combination of all of the above. EB fills the niche of catering to people who might have those needs. Endless' two owners (Darren & Kelli) are also very community minded and leapt at the chance of having a presence at the North Shore Bike Fest - volunteering to put in the pump track and to hold guided rides.

Here are some highlights from those guided rides last weekend,

It was great to see BMX inspired tricks on a mountain bike. For the past two years we have been Mike Montgomery fan boys. Always trying to find footage, pictures or results from the competitions he had competed in. Now we're very please to show you his Banshee bikes as Mike has joined the family

Bimbo - A Life On 2 Wheels Bimbo - A Life On 2 Wheels
My name is Beto and today I want to tell you the story of a really good friend of mine that passed away recently.

His name is William Canizalez, but was better known as Bimbo, and he was responsible for introducing downhill in El Salvador and other central American countries like Guatemala and Honduras. He also created a link between these countries in order for the sport to grow in this part of the world, he dedicated 13 years of his life to this sport, and this is his story.

North Shore Bike Fest - Lezyne Marathon XC North Shore Bike Fest - Lezyne Marathon XC
North Vancouver's cross-country isn't very road-bike friendly.

The Lezyne Marathon XC course is "only" 27km long, but it winds its way through the Mount Seymour area through pretty challenging terrain. Technical rails like Severed Dick, Applicator, Bottletop and Sticks & Stones combined with fast sections of rail-grade with passing sections (Fishermans and Hyannnis add variety and challenge. This is the kind of course that would make many shaved-legged quasi-roadies wail in frustration and toss their semi-slick tires into the woods in petulant fury.

Fort William World Cup | Day Three Fort William World Cup | Day Three
It’s Sunday afternoon in Fort William and that means there’s some racing. Read on for all that happened during day three of the Fort William World Cup.

A morning of practice didn’t see much action, even the keenest riders only completing two runs in attempt to protect both rider and bike. No shortage of practice on Friday and plenty more on offer during Saturday before qualifying in the afternoon means that riders have no excuse not to have got to grips with the 2007 World Championship course.

Fort William World Cup | Day Two Fort William World Cup | Day Two
Action and photos from day two of the 2010 Fort William World Cup.

Saturday morning and the sun is once again out at The Bill. Amazing when you consider how black some of the looming clouds were yesterday. So whilst the umbrella salesmen who had hoped to make a killing are going home in disappointment it's been a killer day for anyone selling sunglasses. The carpark has been a dust bowl and is so bright you’re at serious risk of suffering the equivalent of snow blindness. Not that that’s a common problem here. Another uncommon problem is the loose surfaces on both the 4x and the DH tracks which has been giving riders a headache all weekend. A little overnight rain would do it no harm at all.

Read on for all that happened during the downhill qualifying and 4x finals.

Welcome to the 2010 Fort William World Cup. You’ll have already seen the MTBCut videos and some photographs posted but Friday (well, it was Friday when we wrote this) the riding start and the spectators started arriving. Practice started before nine although in reality only the keen few made it up the hill that early and it wasn’t until the big guns came out to play nearer to ten that things got interesting. Experience is one thing that counts here, and that experience says don’t do too many runs as, at 2.8km long, it’s punishing and soon takes its toll on unsuspecting first time racers:

Vittorio Brumotti Guinness World Record Trials Hop Vittorio Brumotti Guinness World Record Trials Hopping
By Matteo Cappe

The idea for this shot came 2 years ago when Vittorio Brumotti and I visited this location for a Smith shoot. Vittorio is a crazy man, and warned me only the day before departure. When we were inspecting the location, I saw that huge rock and said: "Can't go up there now! That will take some organizing later". So, we ended up with a different shot and planned to come back with a larger crew.

It seems fitting that the latest addition to the Dobermann family is one of the original street riders that brought 20-inch style to Mountain bikes in the late 90’s. For 2010 Dobermann has teamed up with Chris Donahue as part of their R&D program.

The hardest part of our job right now is the mounting anticipation. Every day at work we are recreating gorgeously groomed trails that have only recently emerged from their winter deep freeze...and not riding them.
