Kicking Horse Bike Park - Trail Crew Update #7 - 2 Kicking Horse Bike Park - Trail Crew Update #7 - 2010
The straight goods on Kicking Horse Bike Park, straight from the trail crew's fingertips.

As I'm writing this it is pouring rain and I couldn't be happier. Sure, it will make the riding challenging - particularly for the guys trying to pin it at the Western Open this weekend - but from a trail crew perspective it's wonderful stuff. Now that labour-intensive LYM has opened and the dirt is moist, we can begin to patch up the bomb holes peppering the rest of the mountain. What that means is another incredible September at Kicking Horse. More details inside,

Xprezo Furax DH Race Bike Review Xprezo Furax DH Race Bike Review
by Mark Wood

It’s been six years now that the Canadian bike brand Xprezo Cycles have been hand welding race performance bikes out of their Bromont, Quebec factory. Producing less than 1000 frames per year, their focus is on craftsmanship. Described as "high performance, low maintenance" by Antoine Larose, Brand Manager of Xprezo and coach of the QC Provincial DH Team, they presently produce 12 different bikes ranging from featherlite chromoly road bikes and hardtails to full suspension models, ranging from XC, to AM, FR and now DH. What makes the new DH offering special, besides its slack angles and low slung chassis, is its use of Chromo on the rear triangle and seat mast, giving the bike a unique look and some dynamic ride characteristics.

After three months of heavy use, the bike did a number of things well, most aptly, going fast...

I recently had the good fortune to go on a honeymoon with seven of my best friends. No, it wasn't a bizarro New Age octagonal marriage. Chuck and Joc were celebrating their vow exchange with a month-long honeymoon that included canoeing the Stikine, lounging on some Gulf Islands, and pedaling through the southern Chilcotin Mountains. For the latter they invited friends to join them and six of us, all from Golden, BC, signed up. It was extraordinary.

Of course it doesn't remain exactly the same for all these years, but the major changes were made for rider's safety.

2011 Norco Range 1: A week on the trails 2011 Norco Range 1: A week on the trails
For the 2010 model year, Norco axed the popular Six from its lineup of mountain bikes, and that decision made perfect sense when one considered the bikes that Norco had in its catalog at the time. The Six overlapped with the 2010 Fluid LT, which was meant to be used as a rider's all-day and all-mountain ride, and with the 2010 Shore, which was intended to cover a rider's park / shuttle / freeride needs.

For 2011, BC-based Norco didn't simply reintroduce the Six; instead its designers developed the 2011 Range, which is a bike that retains the climbing capabilities of the Fluid LT (which it replaces) while stepping it up a notch (or three) when the bike is pointed downhill. I recently picked up a demo 2011 Norco Range 1 to ride for a week, and I immediately made plans to ride a bunch of local favourites while traveling later in the week to sample some of the fantastic alpine singletrack that British Columbia has to offer.

Magura Thor 2010 long-term review Magura Thor 2010 long-term review
The 2010 Magura Thor suspension fork is an impressive performer and among the best in its 140mm travel class. The old Thor's were a bit under damped - very plush, but prone to blow through the initial travel quickly - so much so that I would have to run a fair amount of compression damping even in downhill mode. Now, the fork feels magnitudes of improvements better - ie butter smooth at the top stroke, but without being over damped and harsh; and progressive on the latter of the stroke, but without harsh bottom out. Adjustments are also quite refined; the rebound knobs for example have logical tunable changes. The Magura Thor is also pretty stiff for a light fork - part of that is due to the double arch, but I'd hazard a guess that some of the stiffness is attributable to the 20mm axle - which is a very nice touch for a 140 fork.

The Dirt Series Women’s Traveling Mountain Bike The Dirt Series Women’s Traveling Mountain Bike Camp Turns 10.
The brand manager of a major bike component company recently told me, “What every mountain biker guy wants is a girl who rides.” Which is probably true. Pursuing the trails you love with the one you love really is a dream materialized into reality and pedaling right there along beside you.

But—that’s not why we were here.

“We” were 65 gals donned in armor and full face helmets or Spandex and XC lids ready to get our schralp on. And “here” was Whistler Mountain Bike Park (and the valley) - the perfect training grounds for freeride, downhill and cross country progression. We were attending a session of The Dirt Series — the renowned traveling women’s mountain bike skills camp, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Whole story inside,

Kirt Voreis Interview Kirt Voreis Interview
Source: David Peacock

If you mountain bike in any capacity, chances are you’ve heard of Kirt Voreis. If you haven’t, one might begin to question the placement of your cranium relative to your undoubtedly oversized posterior. I apologize for the graphic description, but it must be aptly stated that Kirt Voreis is, to use a technical term, the man. The man, in fact, who will 360 any contraption on which a bicycle may be ridden; the man who runs his own bike demo tour and youth team; the man who rides trails faster than anyone. As you learned folk know, the list goes on. I managed to get a hold of the busiest bloke in biking for long enough to procure an interview of some verbosity.
