Greg Minnaar Off Santa Cruz & Reportedly on Norco for 2024

Dec 2, 2023 at 12:56
by Brian Park
It would be a big day for Minnaar after shaky start to his season.
Despite 15th place in the 2023 overall, Greg did take 2nd at the rain-soaked Andorra round this year.

Greg Minnaar is widely regarded as the greatest DH racer of his generation. He's been on the Santa Cruz Syndicate team for many years, but over the past few months there have been persistent rumours about his future for 2024. Would he retire after a challenging 2023 season? Would he chase a short term, high dollar deal elsewhere? Would Santa Cruz offer him a long term deal to finish out his career? Is he targeting an Alonso-style resurgence?

It now appears that the Minnaar off Syndicate rumours are likely to be true. Multiple people with knowledge of the situation have told Pinkbike that Greg is not on Santa Cruz in 2024. Further, we are told that a deal with Norco has been agreed. It should be stressed that this hasn't been officially announced by any of the people involved, and should still be taken with a grain of salt.

Greg Minnaar out for revenge following the back injury here that side-lined him in 2022.
Minnaar showed flashes of brilliance in a difficult 2023 season.

Minnaar first joined the Santa Cruz Syndicate in 2008, alongside Steve Peat, Nathan Rennie, and Josh Bryceland. The 42-year-old South African DH racer is a four-time world champion, has earned three UCI world cup DH overall titles, and won a record 22 world cup victories in his career.

A hat tip to the Making Up the Numbers podcast. They were not the source of our reporting, but they were the first to address the rumour publicly yesterday. (listen below around the 10-minute mark) Norco's 2024 world cup race team lineup hasn't been confirmed, but in 2023 it was Gracey Hemstreet, Lucas Cruz, and Mark Wallace. We weren't able to independently verify this, but according to the podcast, Mark Wallace is off Norco for next year. Surprising if true, he seems a great fit for the brand. Again, a massive pinch of salt here.

Greg Minnaar is synonymous with the Syndicate and Santa Cruz in the eyes of many fans, and we are genuinely surprised to see him not finishing out his career there. And for Norco, this seems like a huge, costly gamble with a legend of the sport and new bike in development for ~2025. It should be noted that Norco's new bike is a high pivot and quite different from the V10 that Greg's spent the last 15 years on—and he's famously had some things to say about high pivot designs during the development of the latest V10. Similarly, Greg has been on Fox for the past 12 years, and the Norco team is currently on RockShox. Do we see changes there?

If this reporting is accurate, it could be a huge boost for Norco, and we wish the GOAT well wherever he ends up in 2024. We look forward to hearing more details as they emerge.

We reached out to everyone involved for comment. Norco and Santa Cruz declined to comment, but it sounds like an announcement is imminent. At time of publication Minnaar and Wallace are yet to respond.

Update: Santa Cruz has confirmed via Instagram that he's off the team.

bigquotesAfter 16 epic years of racing, puzzling, and making incredible memories together, Greg Minnaar is hanging up his Syndicate jersey. We wish Greg nothing but the best, and want to extend a huge thanks for everything he and the Santa Cruz Syndicate have accomplished together. From the dominant 00’s to his current status as the Greatest Of All Time. It’s been one hell of a ride.@santacruzbicycles

I mean, Norco picking him up is good optics for sure. Hopefully I'll get to see him race when he comes to shore for the North American part of the circuit next year. I hear he flies down the hill like a torrent.

IMO Minnar has always been the Bigfoot of the Santa Cruz team, and that the team has sort of always revolver'd around him. Seems like a Fluid situation over there for sure.

Norco did release Bryn and Jill.
  • 2 0
@dhrracer: True, but they weren't big payroll expenses.
  • 2 0
Honestly, I believe this would be a huge win for Norco. Greg has been a staple in not only the development of the current V10, but the 29" Wheel in the DH world would have probably never have been accepted the way it was without this man. Greg is literally the Chuck Norris of mountainbiking. This will not only be a huge marketing opportunity for Norco, but also their bikes.
  • 3 1
@jomacba: Truth. At first everyone embraced 29s because of Greg's speed and then, when it only worked for taller riders, mullets exploded. It is very possible that this new Greg move really comes down to bike design. SC realistically has to design and engineer for the much smaller Jackson instead of Greg's XXL sized rigs. Weren't there rumors that Loris felt he couldn't win on the V10 when he jumped to Trek? Everyone says it's always about the $$$ but we saw Gwin go without a brake sponsor for a season after he had a double failure on Saints in a World Champs run. An athlete knows they will only be paid $$$ if they perform at their peak and the equipment has to work for them. Norco will probably be happy to go toe-to-toe with Commencal to sell DH bikes to the 6+ft crowd.

I can't believe he's not getting a Peaty style retirement season on the Syndicate.
  • 65 3
There has more than likely been a fallout of some kind.
  • 30 0
@thewho07: Greg seemed pretty spent (at least in the few video clips we got) this past season. I dunno if it was changes in the team, or just having a rough time generally. He also didn't seem ready to hang up the boots, so maybe change is good!

@ridedigrepeat: I would assume PON wanted to put more owned brands on the SC team, and Greg has preferences or other ventures to transition into retirement work
  • 56 0
seems the Syndicate is managed a bit differently since Rob/Kathy have left? If Rob was still running it you for sure gotta think he'd do whatever it takes to keep Greg and have a solid send-off season, special frames, epic parties etc.
  • 23 0
Well... I'm sure he would have a stylish retirement if he had told them he was retiring, which thankfully he isn't. I'm sure whichever brand he retires with won't miss the marketing opportunity to bid the undisputed greatest of all-time DH World Cup racer a classy farewell.
  • 5 0
 @gramboh: Nail on head.
  • 7 0
@gramboh: peaty is managing the team now so no room for the goat if he wants to move into team management after he finishes racing. I suspect sc are more interested in Jackson and Nina who are getting the results they expect
  • 5 4
@gramboh: yup. Still shocking and lame from SC imho.
  • 23 5
@chrismac70: Peaty is a great manager and coach. Greg is famously not a good teammate. I don't think he'd make a good manager.
  • 22 1
PON are ruthless with their balance sheets. They reduce overheads by cutting sponsorships and the salaries that go with them. Look at how they’ve cut all the 50to01 crew - Loose, Rat, Craig Evans - which until about 3-4 years ago what almost entirely Santa Cruz. With Jackson their priority, maybe for half the price or less, it comes down to pure business. Legacy counts for nothing on a balance sheet.
  • 5 8
@jimfredo: Good point, but Jackson isnt going to sell bikes!
Why?
Because he is 1 rider and could ride a bath tub fast.

The Greg/Peaty thing was always going to be strange, great rivals from 2002 until 2010 when Greg pulled away from Steve by that fine margin in racing. Then your old rival is your boss and telling you what to do!!!
  • 23 0
@njparider: What is Greg known for that makes him a bad teammate? Genuinely curious.
  • 7 0
@JakeMartell: And that is me wondering too!
  • 1 0
@njparider: I have no idea as to the skills of either of them
  • 2 0
 @gramboh: where did Kathy go??
  • 12 3
@JakeMartell: I'm sure this guy is just taking some quotes from Luca Shaw out of context. Luca left the Syndicate because he wanted to be more of a focus for the team and he was in Minnaar's shadow at the Syndicate. Everything I ever saw was Greg being a class act and helping mentor these younger riders. He's a legend and far nicer and more professional than other legends of this sport.
  • 2 3
@JakeMartell: There were comments by Rat as well as Brendog eluding to it
  • 5 2
 @yourbuddyjc: proof?
Minnaar has always been a class act
  • 3 1
@gramboh: In this economic climate that won't happen. No one knows the contract numbers but look at Jackson's results vs his contract cost... big ROI. Greg's 2023 result's vs contract cost is a smaller ROI. After a year of a buyer's market for MTB's, something's got to give... and it's the high dollar contracts with smaller ROI's.
  • 6 0
@stormracing: There was a Ride Companion podcast where Brendog talked about Greg as a teammate laughingly, but it was not necessarily described as like the most welcoming teammate. Brendog made some kind of funny remark about Greg taking him purposely on slow lines when they'd practice tracks, Brendog knew what he was doing and said back then he may have been dumb but he wasn't stupid....haha. and then there was some other minor things.
And Rat in some vid or pod (can't remember exactly which) commented that he hated Greg when he first joined the team because he was super hard on him. To which Rat laughed and stated his Dad kinda said he'd never had a proper hazing or apprenticeship or something like that.
IDK I like Greg and got no opinion, just telling @JakeMartell where some of that info comes from. You can find it and make your own opinion.

  • 20 0
@ace9: he’s also not the #1 or perhaps even the #2 focus for the team any more.
  • 5 0
@snomaster: for sure not. I assume Norco is letting him do whatever program he wants and from wherever (if anything like moto). this could be his last season and may want to do it exactly how he wants without any input from a brand
  • 21 0
I seem to remember he also made comments about the team not being ready for rain in one race, called out the unprofessionalism in the post race interviews with WynTV I think.

The whole rear wheel/tyre issues going on and on must have been damn annoying. I wonder what was said behind the scenes.
  • 8 1
@Marc2211: yup, exactly what i remember too. Greg left SC, not the opposite
  • 21 2
@snomaster: I disagree with that. Maybe not the 1 or 2 rider on SC but to say he's not the 1 or 2 more valuable pro doesn't seem right. He sells more bikes than Laurie without question, regardless of place in the overall.
  • 9 0
@ace9: It was probably quite frustrating that the new bike was aimed more at his teammates and the mullet configuration. I mean, they were over-wrapping a rear-triangle with extra carbon in the middle of season
  • 8 0
@Marc2211: His mechanic was pushed out after that
  • 8 0
@IsaacWislon82: The best bike design situation for that team was back when it was Greg, Peaty and Ratboy. All really tall guys, who could all benefit from an XL frame designed specifically for them.

What may be a stiff rear triangle for Laurie may not be stiff at all for Greg because he can generate so much more leverage with his height. Perhaps one of the reasons for the mid-season mods.
  • 8 2
@CreekRider75: Of course he holds undisputed top value to the brand as the GOAT. I simply meant he wasn't the focus of his team's recent results. I'd bet his P2 by a hangnail in Andorra didn't get the credit he wanted either.
And @IsaacWislon82 called out another super important factor. That mullet V10 is much more suited to Laurie, Jackson, and Nina than Greg, regardless of what's on the rim.
As sad as the move is for fans of Greg and the Syndicate at large, this move unfortunately makes sense.
  • 6 0
@snomaster: very true. Jackson and Nina are the 2 producing the results
  • 4 5
Getting off VPP will likely help in that department.

@Muckal: yea watch any of the pit coverage from the world cups and you see custom modifications to many of the riders bikes. One off linkages, one off rear triangles, etc.

It’s because like you said, the needs of a pro racer are much different than the regular people who will actually be buying the bike.

If the 2 of them together can beat me the deal is I have to race a Cx race (or 1 of them said retire from racing haha)

I wouldnt swap jobs with them though, the self motivation is tough for them (although I probably train harder than them, I just lack ability)

marketing cuts most likely. While it was fun for readers, it cost a bunch of money from advertisers. Marketing budgets are always the first to be cut, especially with athlete sponsorships. Selling new bikes at half off really eats into the margins required for proper marketing and outreach.

@rrolly: you think these giveaways are free? There's always an advertising cost plus the inventory giveaway. Again, when you're selling bikes at cost to generate liquid capital, that doesn't leave money for promotions.

When you're seeing bikes for sale for 25-35% off, that's basically cost on most bikes plus a little on the top for operational expenses (shipping, storage, assembly, etc)

This might sound harsh but pro sports is a meritocracy. If you aren't at the top, your contracts reflect that, no matter what you won in the past. It's why Messi plays for Miami and not Barcelona anymore.
  • 4 3
@MT36: Yep. They can do a 'one race sponsorship' with the "OG" Syndicate crew and 'retire' his jersey. SC is a corp. company now, they look at future, the numbers , ROI, etc. Meritocracy almost ALWAYS in sports media.
  • 11 0
@bman33: lol at the downvotes. What if Greg wanted to leave…this is business not personal. People are being too emotional about it.
  • 2 0
@wolftwenty1: Yep. MTB is 'our passion' as amateurs or even part-time pros. If you will. Many of the big pros like Greg are passionate as well about racing/riding MTB also. However, when it comes to sponsorship and salaries are the sharp end of the WC world, business is business. Many just can separate the fans passion with the business aspect without getting all upset..
  • 5 0
@bman33: Greg might win again. Jackson will for sure. Easy decision for SC.
  • 3 0
@wolftwenty1: Bingo. As a late 40's rider/racer who has been in the sport since the mid 90's, Greg is one of my all time favorites. However, Jackson is the hot new young star (deservedly so). Is what it is at this point.
  • 1 1
@bman33: Jackson is much better than Minaar right now. Minaar wasn't producing results. That's how pro sports works. They get paid to win. If you don't win, it sucks. It's a tough way to make a living.
  • 2 0
@MT36: I am not debating that...(maybe I am misreading your comment). Jackson is the young upcoming star and I don't blame SC for putting their full weight behind him. Agree with you 100%. Yes, tough to see Greg let go (or walk away) from that team. We as fans have a good deal of emotion behind what is essentially a business to sell bikes and bike related gear. The business end can be cold as ice at times for sure.

@bman33: i thought it was sad to see cannondale drop Tinker. He is an XC legend. I have met Tinker multiple times over the past 6 or 7 years and he has always been pretty cool to us, but he can be kind of shy which I could see some people interpreting that as standoffish and getting a bad impression of him which is too bad. He is a pretty good dude.
  • 34 0
Don’t forget that Greg broke his neck at the end of the 2022 season. To come back and get 15th in the world in 2023 season is epic.
Some other notable things is he was the first to race 29er I believe? Huge impact on the development of the v10.
When Robs contract wasn’t renewed that was tragic, now Greg. I’ve always been a huge syndicate fanboy, still will be but it would have been nice to see Greg finish off like Peaty did.

There is zero loyalty in "Any" business in the modern era. No matter how good you do for them when they are done it is F-you, sayonara & don't let the door hit you in the ass when you leave.

Part of the reason no one gives a f*ck anymore about much of anything .

@Darknut: Minaar was visibly and audibly frustrated with various aspects of his team several times during interviews this season. It’s not outrageous to think he may have been fed up and left. Again, we always find out in the end, let’s not jump to conclusion because we love to bash the teams.
  • 1 0
@sfarnum: After the hearing Greg on the latest Santa Cruz podcast talk about being "Blind Sided" I think my assessment of the situation was spot on!

Never thought he would leave SC! This would be cool for Canada though! Hopefully they can find him a tire setup where he won't have so many punctures. Lost count how many flats he got this season.

Pon holdings is bleeding out serious cash after the buy out of Canondale from Dorel . Santa Cruz layoffs have been massive the last three months. Sales have collapsed and Pon is going to keep cutting to save off potential a sale or merger of some of it's brands .
  • 17 0
Just curious where/how you’ve heard about layoffs at SC?
  • 12 1
@Chondog94: industry has heard of it, I heard 85+ employees laid off, no reports so could be hear-say. But they are cutting back hard.

In my ideal world (that quite obviously doesn’t exist and will never exist) he would say „f the cash. I earned enough“ and gets on frameworks (or raaw), just because he can.

Whatever happens, I’m stoked to see the GOAT ripping again. No matter what bike.
  • 2 0
In that case I guess he would do his own design to get exactly what he wants
  • 2 0
@knightmarerider: why would he? The Athertons and Neko took years to refine their designs, he’d probably really feel great on a Frameworks. Yet again, people who have ridden the new Norco proto had only great things to say about it. Not sure how much of them were marketing, but it makes you wonder…
  • 1 1
I don't think it's a complete fantasy scenario since Greg makes most of his money outside of mountain biking.
  • 12 0
As much as this kinda sucks two positives are:
1 - Minnaar back at the world cups for at least another year. That’s huge.
2 - Also, it will be cool to see how he gets on riding another bike.
It was a some time ago but he was pretty fast on his Honda, Orange and painted up Intense.
  • 17 3

Norco have gone through 3 or 4 rounds of staff layoffs in the past year, probably where they found the cash.

  • 2 0
@pmhobson: Thank you Sir for this hint. But still, why could Pinkbike not just say he's taking a sabbatical?
  • 5 0
I can only think it's a PON/ SC thing.... Saying he hates the current V10 is odd as I'd assume he had a big old hand in developing it & said he didn't like the high pivot - smoother, but more tired? But as pointed out he's lot's of money & not SC no 1 rider I guess, so it may be better for the other riders.

Anyways good luck to the GOAT I'll enjoy watching him race no matter what the bike is.
  • 8 0
In a podcast this year with a Santa Cruz guy, he said that the racers dont have THAT much of an impact on their design. They have their local testers that can give more direct feedback. Greg is very finicky with his needs and setup. I am not sure such a person can relate to the general consumer that much. I too was seeing him with a permenant role at SC after his racing career. I know he owns a bike shop in South Africa. It could very well be a mutual descision.
  • 1 0
@Philrattlehead: damn! I wonder how the Norco pits are gonna deal with all.the puzzling!!
  • 1 0
@Philrattlehead: I get ya man. It's like a rally or F1 driver's, they can't relate to average punters as they have very different needs, but the trickle down effect must be the same.
  • 4 0
@Philrattlehead: Henry interviewed Brook MacDonald on the PB Podcast a few weeks ago and Brook said the similar thing from the riders side, that that the engineers design a bike that they think rides well, and is what the customers want, but none of them are riding at the top end of WC DH, and the needs of those handful of riders is so different that it can cause conflict.
  • 1 2
@Philrattlehead: not since peaty took over running the team

Greed, no longer being top dog & future downward trajectory results (ie Ego) are likely causes for a move here. Be really interested to see who they bring in to replace him. I note a very basic 2min29sec goodbye video, gotta be fallout. That's just rude!

  • 2 0
If he is going to Norco I wonder if they’ll make the new DH bike 29” rear wheel compatible ? I believe it’s a mullet as of now. His SC team mates ride the mullet versions of the V10. I know they are a lot shorter than Greg but it seems like he likes full 29er’s. I know he made comments regarding high pivots. Maybe he didn’t like the feel of the high pivot V10 proto. and not necessarily high pivots ?? Who knows. It’ll be interesting that’s for sure.

Probably got tired of all the flats on SC and not being top dog on team anymore and Jackson getting top dollar.
  • 2 0
Wild move. Got to wonder if PON had their bean counters try to reduce salaries or if he just wasn't working with the setup and wanted a change. At this point in his career there's still immense value in him as a racer and also future value as not only an ambassador but manager, product director, etc. but hey $ talks... I hope time tells all.
  • 2 0
Just a wild idea, Robb seemed full of praise for the UNNO brand and if Greg gets involved, could take the brand to the next Level. The prototype Angel Saurez was testing last year looked damn fine. Just a wild thought, but Greg has always been keen on developing product and is probably the most successful endorser of brands, look at what happened with the maxis assegaai and O'Neil as well as fox.... Fun times ahead.

Huge news. Greg was making some post race comments throughout the season about constant mechanical problems with the bike so maybe he had issues with the finished product or his mechanics not getting it right. It also seemed like he had a ton of control on the outcome of the new bike so who knows... Either way if I was him i'd be stoked to get on something totally new and the new rockshox stuff is great so maybe that will get him a few podiums. Big win for Norco, hell i'm going to look at their bikes now.

This is an interesting thought considering what the current line looks like... But Greg isn't the only effected rider. Golstone has been on Fox his entire life. I don't see SC messing with that considering the kid nearly won it all his first year out of the box... and the bike is designed around Fox. It's one of the only bikes left in the line that is. Nina's been on Fox a long time. Even on the team that she ran for herself. Same with Laurie. Mondraker was on Fox too. Same with Peaty. Was originally on RS but I think he's been on Fox almost as long as the 40's been out.

The problem with DH is that you need a really specific place to really ride DH. It is only accessible mainly at bike parks and very few local trails. You just can't practice and charge DH anywhere with the type of trails and/or all the people around.
