Greg Minnaar is widely regarded as the greatest DH racer of his generation. He's been on the Santa Cruz Syndicate team for many years, but over the past few months there have been persistent rumours about his future for 2024. Would he retire after a challenging 2023 season? Would he chase a short term, high dollar deal elsewhere? Would Santa Cruz offer him a long term deal to finish out his career? Is he targeting an Alonso-style resurgence?
It now appears that the Minnaar off Syndicate rumours are likely to be true. Multiple people with knowledge of the situation have told Pinkbike that Greg is not on Santa Cruz in 2024. Further, we are told that a deal with Norco has been agreed. It should be stressed that this hasn't been officially announced by any of the people involved, and should still be taken with a grain of salt.
Minnaar first joined the Santa Cruz Syndicate in 2008, alongside Steve Peat, Nathan Rennie, and Josh Bryceland. The 42-year-old South African DH racer is a four-time world champion, has earned three UCI world cup DH overall titles, and won a record 22 world cup victories in his career.
A hat tip to the
Making Up the Numbers podcast. They were not the source of our reporting, but they were the first to address the rumour publicly yesterday. (listen below around the 10-minute mark) Norco's 2024 world cup race team lineup hasn't been confirmed, but in 2023 it was Gracey Hemstreet, Lucas Cruz, and Mark Wallace. We weren't able to independently verify this, but according to the podcast, Mark Wallace is off Norco for next year. Surprising if true, he seems a great fit for the brand. Again, a massive pinch of salt here.
Greg Minnaar is synonymous with the Syndicate and Santa Cruz in the eyes of many fans, and we are genuinely surprised to see him not finishing out his career there. And for Norco, this seems like a huge, costly gamble with a legend of the sport and
new bike in development for ~2025. It should be noted that Norco's new bike is a high pivot and quite different from the V10 that Greg's spent the last 15 years on—and he's famously had some
things to say about high pivot designs during the development of the latest V10. Similarly, Greg has been on Fox for the past 12 years, and the Norco team is currently on RockShox. Do we see changes there?
If this reporting is accurate, it could be a huge boost for Norco, and we wish the GOAT well wherever he ends up in 2024. We look forward to hearing more details as they emerge.
We reached out to everyone involved for comment. Norco and Santa Cruz declined to comment, but it sounds like an announcement is imminent. At time of publication Minnaar and Wallace are yet to respond.

Update: Santa Cruz has confirmed via
Instagram that he's off the team.
| After 16 epic years of racing, puzzling, and making incredible memories together, Greg Minnaar is hanging up his Syndicate jersey. We wish Greg nothing but the best, and want to extend a huge thanks for everything he and the Santa Cruz Syndicate have accomplished together. From the dominant 00’s to his current status as the Greatest Of All Time. It’s been one hell of a ride.—@santacruzbicycles |
First Guy: Not fixie Inc, what will the hipsters do now
Second guys reply: backpedal
A tidier Norco pun would be simply:
That's comment Aurum.
IMO Minnar has always been the Bigfoot of the Santa Cruz team, and that the team has sort of always revolver'd around him. Seems like a Fluid situation over there for sure.
Why?
Because he is 1 rider and could ride a bath tub fast.
The Greg/Peaty thing was always going to be strange, great rivals from 2002 until 2010 when Greg pulled away from Steve by that fine margin in racing. Then your old rival is your boss and telling you what to do!!!
Minnaar has always been a class act
And Rat in some vid or pod (can't remember exactly which) commented that he hated Greg when he first joined the team because he was super hard on him. To which Rat laughed and stated his Dad kinda said he'd never had a proper hazing or apprenticeship or something like that.
IDK I like Greg and got no opinion, just telling @JakeMartell where some of that info comes from. You can find it and make your own opinion.
The whole rear wheel/tyre issues going on and on must have been damn annoying. I wonder what was said behind the scenes.
What may be a stiff rear triangle for Laurie may not be stiff at all for Greg because he can generate so much more leverage with his height. Perhaps one of the reasons for the mid-season mods.
And @IsaacWislon82 called out another super important factor. That mullet V10 is much more suited to Laurie, Jackson, and Nina than Greg, regardless of what's on the rim.
As sad as the move is for fans of Greg and the Syndicate at large, this move unfortunately makes sense.
It’s because like you said, the needs of a pro racer are much different than the regular people who will actually be buying the bike.
If the 2 of them together can beat me the deal is I have to race a Cx race (or 1 of them said retire from racing haha)
I wouldnt swap jobs with them though, the self motivation is tough for them (although I probably train harder than them, I just lack ability)
When you're seeing bikes for sale for 25-35% off, that's basically cost on most bikes plus a little on the top for operational expenses (shipping, storage, assembly, etc)
And I love me some late career comeback stories.
Like honestly though….How rad would it be to see Greg JUST. COMPLETELY. DOMINATE. on that new high pivot Norco?
Don't know for sure, but they were together longer than lots of marriages, so we can gave both parties the benefit of the doubt.
Some other notable things is he was the first to race 29er I believe? Huge impact on the development of the v10.
When Robs contract wasn’t renewed that was tragic, now Greg. I’ve always been a huge syndicate fanboy, still will be but it would have been nice to see Greg finish off like Peaty did.
But everyone still calls him Rockshoxs Jordy.
Part of the reason no one gives a f*ck anymore about much of anything .
No more Saint. Welcome to the Pon Zee scheme.
Whatever happens, I’m stoked to see the GOAT ripping again. No matter what bike.
1 - Minnaar back at the world cups for at least another year. That’s huge.
2 - Also, it will be cool to see how he gets on riding another bike.
It was a some time ago but he was pretty fast on his Honda, Orange and painted up Intense.
How can Norco afford him though? Didn't they kick Blenki because racing was too expensive for them?
EDIT: JK he's taking a leave.
Anyways good luck to the GOAT I'll enjoy watching him race no matter what the bike is.
But that’s just crazy idea, guy is only somewhere in the middle of his career
The two wheels that are part of the bike, plus the four that drive the bike to the trailhead or start of the ride.
Hopefully another female on the team?
Perhaps Cap23 is getting him back with a big sponsor on a frame in the works?
@hotchillee.cc
In any case Hoping Minaar feels go about whatever happenned, he was admitely such a big part of the brand it's tough to see him go but Minaar will do well wherever he goes. Thanks GOAT.
Not that this is anything like a murder but if there is a murder, does the press hold off on the story until they figure out who did it, or why they did it? Of course not. The murder itself is a newsworthy event that needs to be told.
