Pinkbike Poll: What's The Least Awful Word That Means 'Not An E-Bike'?

Dec 8, 2023
by Seb Stott
Pole Bicycles
A selection of e-bikes and, erm, bikes that aren't e-bikes.

I know what you're thinking - a mountain bike without a motor is just a mountain bike. Sure, that's perfectly clear if we're just discussing those simpler machines. But many e-bikers refer to their steed as a "bike", so when it comes to comparing an e-bike to its non-motorised equivalent, it's pretty confusing to just call it a "bike" as well.

photo
Some e-bikes are starting to look a lot like the regular version.

So there are a surprising number of occasions when we want to refer to a mountain bike, but make clear that we're not talking about an electric one. For example: "When the battery goes into limp mode, it almost feels like I'm riding a [...]"

Some common terms include "non-e-bike" (which is a bit clunky), or "acoustic" and "analog" - which don't make sense because neither word is technically the opposite of "electric". The opposite of analog is digital, and if your e-MTB was truly digital you'd do a wheelie every time you touched the pedal. According to the internet (which you should never believe), the word closest to the opposite of acoustic is "nonauditory". I don't think that's quite right either. The term "pure" or "purist" often comes up in this context, which in my opinion has definite gatekeeping vibes.

Of course, this is meant to be tongue-in-cheek - and there are definitely bigger problems in the world - but if you had to differentiate between an e-bike and its regular counterpart, which term(s) do you hate the least?

What's the least awful way to refer to a mountain bike while making clear you're not referring to an e-bike?

Complete the sentence: I don't ride e-bikes, I ride a [. . .] bike.

The voice of reason! We should change "e-bike" to "moped" and be done with it.

 "Bike" = Bike
"E-Bike" = Motorcycle

It's the fact that the bicycle has a motor in it that makes it so.

try posting this header in a Harley forum. Nothing worse than being told to "ride a real bike" because everything else is imaginary

Agreed, though when making the distinction, it is 100% fair to say ebike and real bike.

You can't argue that, it's not up for debate. And your opinion doesn't negate straight up facts. Now let's do this poll for ebikes. I've already got some good ones:

Bitchcycle
Motorcycle
Pussymobile

Jk fatties, relax.

@mior: I call them RBRM’s (Real Bike for Real men) when talking to E-mobility riders.
  • 102 1
Yes its the powered version that needs the rebrand not the OG
  • 41 1
 Agreed with Brian.

"Bike" is what normal pedal powered bikes should be called.

Sometimes I jokingly call my bike (I don't own an ebike), a "me-bike", which amuses me a bit.

Gonna get downvoted... but pinkbike editors and commentators, you really need to embrace eBikes. I listened to Levy's final podcast and it talks about how PB took over from printed media. Like it or not, eBikes will take over, so you should embrace this step rather than go the same way as magazines... Get some editors who actually like riding eBikes and do some great tests with them. Start a sister website if you need to leave the meatheads on this site.

  • 103 7
@rojo-1: No, we really don’t have to embrace eBikes anymore than cyclists at the turn of the century had to embrace motorcycles (which were essentially just modified bicycles at the time much as eBikes are now). Bicycles will always remain their own thing, and eBikes will continue to morph into their own separate thing. If you want to embrace both, great, but if you don’t then that’s fine too as at the end of the day they are not the same thing.

I don't see how this could even be a debate. French fries exist, curly fries come out, "Oh no, what will call french fries now?" Books exist, e-readers are introduced, "Oh no, what should we call books now, regular books?" No they are just books vs e-books or whatever. You don't rename the old thing because something new came out.

@rojo-1: I actually fully agree. I have nothing against eBikes, but there seems to be a large disconnect with lots of people interested in one and not the other because they are definitely different. Trying to cover them the same way on the same site just seems kinda odd. When four wheelers came out they got covered in stand alone publications from dirt bikes for the same reasons.

Give eBikes their own publication and dedicated staff. Pretty sure that is what most people wanted from the get-go, but we ended up getting this hybrid where you can “filter” out eBikes instead. It just leaves both groups wanting and having weird conversations about what we should call things.

Bike = Bike
E-Bike/ Pedelec = motor to assist pedal power, no separate throttle
Moped = pedals and throttle controlled motor (operate independently) common aftermarket hackjobs ridden by fast food delivery riders
E-Moto = throttle controlled electric motor, no pedals. AKA twat-mobile, aka getaway vehicles for theiving shits and balaclava clad drug dealers.

@rojo-1: skateboarders didn’t embrace skateboards with motors, nobody likes scooters with motors. Someone put a motor in a surfboard years ago and no one was into that. I’m not saying e-bikes will die like those did they are clearly popular. But the arguments that e-bike users make are always nonsense. It isn’t just as much of a workout, it isn’t going to change the racing side of cycling (because this isn’t a Motorsport) and like all new things you’re going to catch shit from the old guard. E-bike folks need to stop acting like they are getting bullied any time conversation like this come up. If you like them like them and enjoy. But don’t try to change actual bicycles because e-bikes exist now. We don’t call gas powered cars anything other than cars. And electric cars are exactly that, electric cars. Honestly I think e-bike is being generous. They should be called electric bikes. It’s what they are.

I voted for Regular, but loved the choices! Acoustic does NOT fit by any stretch of the imagination... what sound does it make? Are we comparing it to a guitar? Most would not know it, but many of the electrical components on an e-bike are analog, including the sine wave phase input to the motor. E-bikes are hybrid, combining muscle power enhanced with electrical, so that rules out Muscle-powered and Breakfast-based. Pure? Nope. All the contraptions like suspensions, dropper posts, derailleurs, cranks, and pedals did exist on original bikes... they're just other ways of cheating!

A group of riders out for a Sunday blast on a Firebkade, Gixer and R6 just call these bikes. Off road stuff becomes dirt bikes or if they’re into it Enduro and crosser (uk) woods/dirt bike and moto elsewhere.

If you are actively doing work to keep moving, you are on a bike. If you can hold a position and you get movemennt anyways, it's passive.

That's why the throttle is so important to this equation. Old mopeds had throttle and could be used without pedaling.

Now here me out...
Honestly I kinda like e-mtbs for the powered ones, because they are a different beast than the e-hybrids and e-commuters, and (WTF!) e road bikes. That said "Moped's" historically have a throttle. My bro-in-laws fat tired commuter with a throttle= MOPED. I think all of RADbikes fleet are MOPEDS! (yeah I'm yelling it). I think THIS would also help alleviate the gen publics confusion between the legal classifications of 1,2,3 (look it up just plain poorly done)
So pedal powered by a meat engine = Bike, and the subsets there of.
If it has an electric motor providing at least a portion of the go I propose.....
. NO throttle, MUST be pedaled to go primarily with e-motor assist = e-bike (or "e- [various subset])
Actually pedals, with assist and option of a throttle=MOPED
Not designed with pedalling as primary input for movement.= e-SCOOTER or e-MOTORBIKE

Model aircraft were legal for 100 years in America, flying them was protected by law. Then "drones" came along, and every model aircraft became a drone. Then someone flew a drone over the White House. Then drones were banned, and model aircraft with them. The line between drones and model aircraft was important, it wasn't defended, and a community of millions paid the price. Model airplane flying is mostly illegal in the United States, a generation of kids who won't grow up knowing how airplanes work.

"Removal of the Special Rule for Model Aircraft"
www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/12/11/2020-26726/removal-of-the-special-rule-for-model-aircraft

When the electrified bicycle fires that have caused 300 deaths and legislative action in NYC finally come to a national forest near you, the Sierra Club will be ready with legislation that says "bikes cause fires, bikes must be limited to bike parks". This is what happened to model aircraft. That law is already written, sitting at thinktanks, ready for the national emergency necessary to get it signed. One LiPo fire on a hot summer day is all it will take.

If we don't defend the line between bikes and not-bikes, we're going to lose access to our trails the same way model airplanes lost access to the sky: all at once, with the stroke of a pen.

If it has a motor and pedals, it's a motor-pedal. You could call it moped for short.

Bikes are bikes.

Defend the line.

This can not get enough up-votes.
E-bikes will f*ck up cycling as we know it. It's already happening. Everything that makes bicycles so awesome, is being tossed away just for some assistance.

Simple, affordable, elegant, lightweight, lasting for decades, easy, cheap and occasional maintaintenance, safe has now become complicated, expensive, ugly, heavy, obsolete in 10 years (if not earlier), needing professional, expensive and frequent maintenance, and dangerous. But hey, you have assistance!

People saying 'just don't buy one' are missing the point. Once 'bike' becomes synonymous with 'e-bike', everyone on a bike (a 'normal' bike, that is!) will suffer the consequences of everything e-bikes are f*cking up.
Soon landlords will just say 'no bikes allowed in my appartments', because well, 'bikes cause fire'. School kids here will no longer except a bike, because 'all my class mates ride e-bikes'. And the list goes on. It's horrible.

To be fair almost any model aircraft could be used as a 'drone' for nefarious purposes. You could attach cameras, fill one with explosives, whatever. The difference between bikes and e-bikes is that one has a big battery on the downtube, the other a water bottle. I don't think it takes a genius to figure that out.
  • 2 2
@mtmw I think you make an excellent point for why we can't continue with "bikes", especially in the US where access is a great concern.

The problem with "bikes" and "ebikes" is that the layperson would consider bikes the umbrella term, like how model aircraft became drones. The only way to defend the line is to make a distinction that "meat bikes" and "ebikes" are entirely separate entities.
  • 8 6
I believe that e-biking is actually a different activity than biking. It happens to be done (at the moment) in the same areas by a lot of the same people, but really, it's a different sport.

@L0rdTom: okay, believe it or not, this is productive. How do you define biking? What about adaptive biking? Same sport? I'm inclined to say no, and the dictionary isn't really any help here so that's an honest question. At the very least it's a different discipline, but I think the equipment is different enough that it's a different sport. It will certainly make the likely, future land use disputes a lot clearer if we draw boxes around the two activities and treat them separately. I'm not saying either one is inherently bad, but they might be different enough to warrant being subject to different laws and regulations.

The naming of things is really a giant mess.

Motorcycle implies a certain level of power (more than a class 1 ebike IMO).

Moped implies low power and also has pedals IMO, and is probably a more accurate description.

But most people think of something like a Vespa when they think of a moped (I'd call those more of a scooter... which also gets confused with the little stand on kids scooters and now e-scooters), which I think gets e-bike enthusiasts feathers rustled.

The dadped was a gamechanger for this RAD-dad! Sure I could still pedal the little around on a regular bike, but in a hilly city the assist makes it a breeze for both of us. In warm weather we are out and about every day on the playground circuit.
I continue to have mixed (though generally positive) feelings about e-bikes on trails, but e-bikes in the city are amazing. Lower bar for entry to get on a bike = more people riding bikes in the city, which makes it safer to ride bikes in the city, which means there are fewer cars.
  • 3 0
My comments regard only "eBikes" used for off-road trails.

So-called "eBikes" all have motors and all have throttles. Your crankset is a throttle. Just like a thumb-lever like you see on a couch, or a twist-grip like you see on what most of us would recognize as a "dirt bike" - the harder you push (or twist), the more power is provided by the motor, and the faster you go with relatively little physical effort. These "eBikes" are OHVs (Off Highway Vehicles) - or ORVs, or OXVs, or whatever your State or the Feds like to call them.

Those with power magnitude switches? Part of the throttle.

These so called "eBikes", are motor cycles - not far removed from "dirt bikes". They are motorized vehicles just like "dirt bikes" and need to be regulated as any other motorized vehicle, e.g.; licensing, and prohibited use in places set aside for non-motorized use.

There are only two fair ways to resolve this argument - and it is NOT to make an exception as we've been doing. BTW - whenever you open your hole to make an argument that your eBike is a "bicycle", understand that - oh yea..., it has a motor. Throttle be damned. It still has a motor. Duh.

One resolution is to prohibit use of all motorized vehicles on trails not so designated (with the exception of aBikes being used by those who can legally present a handicap tag in/on their automobile because they have a medically verifiable handicap).

The 2nd resolution - which may be closer to the wishes/choices of others who elect to ride eBikes for whatever reason not including a verified handicap (stupidity & weenieness are not handicaps), is to just open up all trails that currently allow the use of the eBike class of motorcycles, to ALL classes of motorcycles regardless of the type of motor they use for propulsion, or the type of throttle they may use.

I'd be cool with the 2nd option. All those trails that 13 yr olds of all ages are fond of coasting down - are ready made hillclimbs. Now THERE'S a trail you can use your throttle on!! Most of those REALLY GOOD ONES are couch-wide - you can ride your dirt bikes two-abreast & race your buddy to the TOP!!

Initially we had velocipede and differentiated "safety bike" and "penny farthing"

Then race bike (which would now be a gravel bike) and bike (which meant commuter)

Later road bike, track bike, cross bike, mountain bike, trials bike, jump bike (now dj)

Mountain bike then became xc mountain bike, trail bike, downhill bike.

And we added time trial bike and gravel bike.

Do you really want to now relabel everything "analog xc mountain bike", "unassisted road bike", "legacy time trial bike" ?

Velocipede is "fast foot". Lets go back there.

I will also keep referring as a “bike”, there is already a way to refer the other version “e-bike”,
  • 5 2
I love my ebike. I love my normal bike. Much like a father loves his kids, I have a favorite, but I would never tell anyone which one it is.
  • 2 0
In my crew where many of us have both bikes and e-bikes, that's exactly what we say - like: "Hey, on the ride today are you riding your bike or e-bike". Simple and to the point.
  • 3 0
lmao Acoustic pertains to sound, sonic waves. Analog pertains to signals, which can be electric. marketing jargon is at it again.
  • 2 5
@atrokz: mate ya need to get out more, on our local trails most of the bikes are way noisier than the ebikes, rattly wheels and rusty chains louder than anything else.
  • 4 0
@p0rtal00: you live on an island, mate.
  • 7 6
 I ride a mountain bike… you ride a e-bike.

All these old 40 year olds calling it analog or acoustic really gets my gears grinding. It’s a mountain bike you weekend warrior, Covid riding, 2 burgers away from a heart attack, meat head.
  • 4 1
E-bikes should be called electric pedal assist bikes, or Epabs. And then legally treated the same as all other motorised vehicles.
  • 3 1
Before e-bikes even came along, in the uk, we had the term push bike to differentiate between motorbikes and push bikes.

I don’t get how it’s not already been mentioned…
  • 2 0
As said, its a bike, anything else gets the defined label to ID it.
Obviously the discipline type comes in if relevent such as, DH bike, XC bike etc
but refering to things like " human powered DH bike" get ta f u k ! : )
  • 4 0
Why find another name for something called bike long before ebikes were invented?
  • 1 0
I was going to post a comment stating the same as 70% of the other comments that people haven't read before commenting, so I didn't.

Amishbike? This must be from the country where the only brand of copying machines was called Xerox, and it's now a verb as well.
  • 5 1
Hate the term 'acoustic' bike so so much - it's not a bloody instrument! It's a ... bike.
  • 4 3
 NEWS FLASH:

Skinny, broke, middle-aged mountain biker discovers joy of trolling ebikers online to help fill the expanding void created by the fact that being the fastest climber in his dwindling ride group no longer matters to anyone.

“Being the fastest up the hill used to kind of balance out the fact that I was, umm, not that into jumps. Now newbies on e-bikes are already passing me downhill and clearing that gap I always ride around which is bull$hit because they cheated.”
  • 4 1
a bike. or a mountain bike. i think ebike riders should be required to call them motor bicycles or motorbike for short b/c that's what it is.
  • 3 0
A being true to myself bike. I would feel fake AF on a E-bike. And nobody really what's to feel that when you lay your head on the pillow every nite
  • 4 0
Stupidest poll/article of the year award goes to this one, and its author...
  • 1 0
 "Mountainbike"

Cause that's what they were called before e-bikes came around. And that's why e-bikes are called e-bikes. Because they needed a different name. Because it's them which appeared later. Damn. (BTW - I own and like and ride both)

'nuff said.

A very quick scan of Google scholar suggests that those that don't just use bicycle/e-bike to differentiate the two seem to use 'conventional' to denote non-assisted bikes.
  • 3 0
i was going to go with "Normal", but of the choices, 'regular' works ok too.
  • 2 0
You can call your e-bike whatever you want. I'll call my bike a bike. I'll call e-bikes e-bikes. No sh*ts given about who's riding what.
  • 2 2
Full Power / Mid Power / SL ===> reference to ebike

FHPB = Fully Human Powered Bike - just a regular bike. Or perhaps just bike as in XC bike, down country bike, trail bike, enduro bike, DH bike.

Why does it matter so much. Just ride whatever you ride.

Back in the day roadies used to be the enemy, now it's e bikes. How times change.

Mountain Bike and E-Mountain Bike ... easy!?
  • 2 2
Let's just call 'em what they are. A bicycle. "Bike" for short when you've established context. Can't believe I need to establish context to call my bike, "my bike". As to context for electric-motor powered 2-wheel bicycle-looking contrivances - how about calling them what they are! A MOTORCYCLE!! Regardless of what is used for a throttle - whether it be thumb-operated lever, wrist-operated grip, or leg operated crank - there's just no getting past the evident fact that if there's a motor being used for propulsion, it's a motorcycle. Maybe a class or motorcycle. The "ebike" class, maybe. But still a motorcycle.
  • 2 1
This is a mirror image of the conversation happening about genders right now. I say if you’re riding an e-bike go for it. But all of us riding mountain bikes don’t need to clarify that to make you feel included.
  • 1 1
When we stagger and grovel about the other doodes steed, maybe it’s time to realize that Maybe? Just Maybe? our own steed choices suck ass indeed? We need all loam troopers to chill and ride whatever Floats their boat and stop trying to sink others ships.
  • 2 0
This is just like when Bicycling Magazine tried to change the term Mountain Bike to ATB ~ All terrain bike.

Media is not culture. It is just a medium.
  • 2 0
How about calling it what it is "mountain bike" (or road bike, gravel bike, etc.)? why is a new name for a bike warranted when a new bike segment comes around?
  • 4 1
It's a bike, same as it always has been. The e-bike is that one that needs clarification.
  • 1 0
Anything without a motor is a BIKE. Like it’s always been. “I ride a bike”. If it’s got a motor then it’s not a bike. It’s an eBike. Period. Mic drop. End of debate. Lock up the thread. Good bye.
  • 2 0
So is it ok for me to take my ebike out and film me riding it and post it? Just kidding... this article seems lie it was just to fill space..
  • 1 0
As a Dutch person I find mountainbike to narrow. We don't have mountains, however we do ride mountainbikes a lot, so they seem to fit the non-mountain scenario pretty well. I propose off road bicycle.

In the early days, "All-Terrain Bike" or "ATB" was a popular term.

  • 4 5
Well, everyone at my factory refers to the tricycles we have around here for work as "bikes". So, just because you call something a bike, doesn't mean it is. And eBikes are mopeds, not bikes.

And also why I refer to my motorcycles as "motorcycles" and not bikes, even if they are two wheeled vehicles.
